Recent 'Fallen Flag' Sightings while Trainwatching

Saw an GN boxcar about a month ago on the UP line between Proviso and Rochelle. I did a double take. Have no idea where it even came from.

Today and yesterday CSX shoved a cut of cars up our main to interchange, and saw a B&O two bay covered hopper. Still had the capitol and B&O reporting marks. Both of them were going to a cement plant and both had 1968 build dates. Too bad I don't have some sort of small high quality camera I could put in my pocket, cause I see some rare cars from time to time.

I live in the Twin Cities and see quite a variety of "fallen flags", not surprisingly mostly from railroads that used to roam here. Lots of CNW, BN, ATSF, and Soo (plenty of engines still with Soo); less frequent MILW (a few old switchers still roaming CP yards) and MOPAC, SP/SSW; and occassionally NW, Sou, GN, NP, DRGW, Frisco, RI, and Chessie.

I've mentioned this before on another topic (can't remember which offhand) but saw Soo Line SD50s (or 60s). Are they fallen flags? The amazing this was these were all white with the red fronts, there were two of them, and they were leading a southward vehicle train over BNSF tracks with no BNSF engines. Now, here in Kansas that's a raratiy! I looked on a map and the closest that railroad ever got was Kansas City, maybe? But not Wichita.

Also along the old Katy RR line (now UP) I'll see the occasional Missouri Pacific logo and sometimes, but not as often as the MP, I'll still see an M-K-T logo and even more rare now the Katy logo. Usually these come on hopper cars, sometimes boxcars.

And now and then I'll see an ex-Conrail around here on the BNSF, usually all the lettering painted over, but I actually saw one with all lettering and logos in tact! I noticed when the BN was still the BN they used quite a bit of Conrail colored engines.

We got some overheads and later some ground level side view shots. Fun!

just this past summer in at the wye in Bay City, Michigan's Wenonah Park i saw 6 former GM&O woodchip hoppers being used for sugar beet hauling. they are owned by the saginaw valley railway and looked heavily rusted as if they had not been used in over 20 years. even so the initial GM&O could still be seen

I began to realize how many fallen flag cars are disappearing each year now, so I started carrying a notebook to record sightings. Since Jan 2003 I have seen at least one of the following, with slogans where extant.
Southern {Gives a green light to service}, Family lines, Chicago Northwestern, Missouri Pacific {Route of the Eagles}, Maine Central {the Pine Tree Route}, NYC, C&O, Wiscinsin Central, Delaware & Hudson, Grand Trunk {the Good Track Road}, Chessie, Santa Fe, BN, Florida East Coast, and B&O.
If you think there is nothing noteworthy about such sightings now, just wait a few years.

I began to realize how many fallen flag cars are disappearing each year now, so I started carrying a notebook to record sightings. Since Jan 2003 I have seen at least one of the following, with slogans where extant.
Southern {Gives a green light to service}, Family lines, Chicago Northwestern, Missouri Pacific {Route of the Eagles}, Maine Central {the Pine Tree Route}, NYC, C&O, Wiscinsin Central, Delaware & Hudson, Grand Trunk {the Good Track Road}, Chessie, Santa Fe, BN, Florida East Coast, and B&O.
If you think there is nothing noteworthy about such sightings now, just wait a few years.

Saw two Soo engines in use on one of the locals around Watertown, NY over the summer. Wish I'd gotten a picture. Part of what tipped me off from a distance was the unfamiliar horns, and the strobes on the roofs. They were in the white/red cab/billboard scheme.

I did get a picture of two UP locos on a local delivering flats to Fort Drum about two weeks ago. Talk about a long way from home!

Florida East Coast is not a fallen flag, it still runs between Jacksonville and Miami Florida. I used to live a half mile from it.
