Recent 'Fallen Flag' Sightings while Trainwatching

I just got back from a four day trip to Philadelphia, whre I went by the Reading Market, formerly the Center City station of the Reading Railroad, I also was staying at a hotel right near the old headquaarters building of the Philadelphia & Reading Railroad. Also drove by the old Pennsyvania Suburban Station as well as Amtrak's 30th. Street Staion formerly owned by the Pennsy. Saw lots of overpasses that had markings of the Reading and Pennsy roads. Lots of railroad history there in Philly.

I live by a former IC (CN) branch that serves ADM, Tate & Lyle, Catepillar, etc. There is a lot of old 'Fallen Flags' riding the rails. Not to long ago, a train full of Rock Island hoppers rolled through. Also a 75-unit grain train with nearly all CNW marked hoppers went through as well. With all the industry, the railroads are bringing all sorts of colors and names through. See something new everyday.

The CNO&TP sub-lettering on the NS GP38AC is a carryover from SR. SR power used to be numbered in blocks according to subsidiary (CNO&TP, AGS, NO&NE, etc) but a renumbering was done around 1969 or 1970. The sub-lettering remained on the cab sides and may be related to financial arrangements since it has little or nothing to do with where a locomotive is assigned.

I saw a Erie boxcar and a reading coal car last week. I also saw a passenger car on a commuter line with reading numbers still on it.

While in Wisconsin last week I saw a WC SD-45 leading some very old MILW gons loaded with ballast in Slinger, WI and then, wow, here comes a Wisconsin Southern train iwth many MILW box cars on the old MILW branch that goes through Slinger, Hartford and west from there to Horicon.

I saw a Maine Central boxcar in the yellow and green scheme with Pine tree logo, what is funny is I bought a model of one of these two days before, thinking the real ones are probably all gone. I also saw a Boston and Maine boxcar in the blue scheme of the late 70's. These cars were both spotted on a CP Rail train going through Wilkes-Barre, PA.

While in Algiers, LA I spotted a decrepit open-platform observation or business car with "PC" stenciled on the left rear and "New York Central" across the letterboards at the top.

I don't know why I forgot about this before. On CN here it is rather common to see L.E.F.&C. boxcars and open hopper cars. These cars now have CN reporting marks, but otherwise have all of their original paint. Also you sometimes see T.H.&B. hopper cars on CP and I can recall once seeing a gondola car as well. On CP you see a lot of Soo Line cars, but they're so common that you don't think much about them.

In regards to the Maine Central boxcar seen on a CP frieght. A while back on the news there was a derailment that happened in Quebec (I don't even remember them saying what railroad it was on). When it showed the derailment you could see one yellow boxcar with the pine tree logo on it.

I recently saw a C & O coil car parked on a siding in elk Horn city Kentucky. Also there is a Clinchfield bunk car parked on a siding in the Dante yard. Have seen a NYC coal hopper in the Carbo Virginia yard.

Today I saw a old SCL covered hopper going through Carbondale, Il where I go to college. Also I have seen a lot of the L. E. F.& C. cars that are in coal duty. In Decatur, where I live, I have seen many NW and Southern Cars, old IC cars pre 1972 and Erie Lackawana hoppers at the CSX yard.
