Thanks for the info on the trailer question. Is there any advantage to putting the trailers on the sets of wheels like that, instead of on an actual train car? Or is it just a "different" way to do it?

Hi Nora, everyone ok now? Hope so.

Yes, everyone is well now, the boys are back to running around & destroying things. Thanks for asking. As for me, I got to go to an entire baseball game tonight by myself, for the first time since probably 1996, so I am great.

Hi Wabash,
Yup, it was a older unit, a SD40, with the long hood as the front, bell was above the "front" headlight.
Nora, its easier to move the trailers, you can hook them up to a jitny, or yard truck, sorta like a switch engine for tractor trailers, and drive them away from the tracks, no need to unload them from a flat car.
Wabash will have more and better info on that aspect, we dont get roadrailers down here in Houston.
And you got to go someplace alone? Without kids? Really truly?
How does it feel?
Its been so long, I forgot!
Stay Frosty,
Ed

I looked today and found the bell on the side(i think it was right side). The sound was coming from a cylinder thing between the front truck and the fuel tank. I said this earlier- i heard some recorded fake bells on ARR GP38-2 units. Sounds like someone is sitting inside the fuel tank and rubbing two frying pans together.

the advantage of running the trailers with out a railcar is that the extra wieght the rail car is added into tonnage the trailer is lighter and can haul more with less power. the other thing is that when hauling road railer trailers is they can pull up any where and uncouple these trailers at a crossing have a truck waiting there and take off with it. running with a rail car would mean it gets to terminal off loaded then checked then hauled away. road railers dont need a special place to be unloaded just a little pavement to drive off with it. the intial cost is more because of the way they pipe the air for rail use but the rest is the same like any other trailer for road use.

many communities saw the way this was comming down with cutting jobs due to not making it to terminal so they banned the railroad from making stops to get rid of trailers. but it is still faster and cheaper than putting these trailers on flat cars and hauling them.

Jim that would be like the 2 corssings we have up the road.. the roads cross so close together... and the bells on the corssing lights were both put on bakc in the 40's but in the 70's one was crashed by a drunk driver, so, i a new one was put in.. so the pattern sounds like this when theyre stuck on all night

Crossing one: ding...ding...ding...ding...ding...ding...ding...ding...ding...

Crossing two: dingdingdingdingdingdingdingdingdingdingding

very annoying..
so i imagine 2 bells on locomotives would be Equaly annoying, but it would be pretty darn cool!

ps.. Jim.. i added you to my AOL.. so when you see an idiot under the name "Emunkey1"... hey that's not an idiot! that's me!

Gee Ed, your cousin must be related to my ex-wife. She had no problem with scrapin' a knuckle on my head. I would be standing there chattin' crap and WHACK! Right hook on the side of my skull. Damn that broad was meen! Good lookin', but a hellcat. Her bellringer wasn't pneumatic like on the locos either.

Kevin great holler at me anytime. I work second shift so I am a night owl. We have been working overtime to meet schedules. So I don't go to bed until 4 or 5 or 6 am. Then the dog gets me up at 8 or 9 so I have been really screwed up in sleeping. [^]
