drailed - most people think I am a rare breed anyway. I like trains cuz I grew up living the life. I also like football, baseball, understand enough about golf, hockey, car races, boat races and simple car engines that I can at least hold my own in a conversation. I don't like to cook, clean house or do laundry - would rather help tune up the car. But I do them because they need doing and my husband, bless him, helps with all those chores too. He is into karate and while I have never taken any lessons, I ask a ton of questions and know a little about karate.

But not a lot about anything in particular. Makes life interesting!

I sell, check the site I mentioned to Terry.
And I have heard of Harding, but only the big lathes, or a finish or second production tool room lathe, didnt know if they made a small lathe. What I need it a small, hobby style lathe, capable of cutting mild steel or brass, to make sizing bushings to use as a end guage for the pens I make. I looked at a sherline, but way too much plastic for my taste. The unimat seems to be all steel, and it small, about 24 inches between centers. It has most of the features a small tool room lathe has, and is capable of cutting threads. I has a self feeding tool post, but uses round rails instead of a bed with ways, so I am a little leary of how long it would hold up under constant use.
Had a old Atlas machine/engine lathe, but time and a ex wife did away with it. Cant find a good used one, so I bought a new Delta. Not as sturdy or well built as they used to be, but does what I need it to, just dost have metal turning speeds, its a wood turning lathe.
Heres the site address if you want to look
http://pages.sbcglobal.net/renaissance-man
Collets would work, now that I think about it, but a chuck would be more user friendly for what I do. Then again, you can never have too many things for your lathe.
Stay Frosty,
Ed

Will put it up as soon as I finish it, wife say we need to overhaul the site anyway.
And yes, ebony is a very dense wood, and cuts so smooth it almost needs no sanding. Beautiful stuff.

Yes it IS for cowards!

As one of Shakespears charactors aptly opined, "What is in a Name"... If Johnny called himeself George in this forum, would he be any less anonymous!

So who cares!

I won't even use my regular forum moniker here, and now I'm even more anonymous - right.

Silly me.

You can call me XxX, or you can call me YyY. You can call me DuM, You can even call me XyZ, or AbC, or even HaPpY. But please, ya doesn't got to call me FaT!

Just don't call me late for dinner! hehehahahoho!

Very interesting hobby. Do you sell your creations? or is it just something that interest you? How did you get started in this?
I have never heard of the Unimat name. Harding has a small turrel lathe that may surve your purpouse. They are quite nice. When you go to purchase a machine check to make shure all if the ways are tight. Spindle bearings last forever if the machine is taken care of. Do not buy a machine if you suspect bad spindle bearings as they are very expensive. I prefer collets to a chuck for small work. If you use several different sises of stock a chuck may suit you better as collets run $20. and up each. I have four lathes in my shop 1-30hp, 2-20hp & 1-15hp

Any more questions E-mail me @ foamer4000@yahoo.com

Terry,
Scan your other pens, and send the picture to the address at the bottom of the page, (it dosnt obligate you to buy anything) and I will try to identify what wood they are made of. I just got some african ebony, really dark black. Let me take a look and see.

You ought to feel it, it really feels like stone, and heavy also.
Makes great pen, and other turnings.
Glad you liked them.

Hi Terry,
Dont know if it ok with the guys who run this site, but heres the address to look at some of them.
http://pages.sbcglobal.net/renaissance-man
If that dosnt work, try
renaissance-man@sbcglobal.net.
Pretty much any wood you would like, and lots of acrylic, really cool stuff.
You gotta put the dash between renaissance and man.
If that still dosnt work, get me your e-mail address, and I will reply with a message that has a like to the site.
Thanks,
and Stay Frosty,
Ed

Ed,

I would like to know how I can get one of your pens. What kinds of wood do you use? I've got one made of teak(spelling?), and two others I don't know what wood they are.

Tim: Currently it's available at the Rochelle RR Park store and Rail Hobby Trains on E. State in Rockford. Otherwise Amazon.com, Barnes and Noble.com, and Xlibris.com stock it.

Thanks, John B.

Ed: Gotta do some promoting here - I have two of Ed's handmade pens and they are wonderful. I do a lot of writing in my job and the pens are so well-balanced and don't cramp my hand. I have given them as gifts and will continue to do so!

Oh Missouri and just when I thought you were becoming an intelligent human being.

My name is Jenny but not James. That was my brother Jessie. Ed is my husband's name and he would take great exception to your not liking his name. And Jennie was my great-grandmother. She lived in the late 1800's and that's a pretty old name. Plus, my relatives are from Kansas and Missouri. So best not be knocking a possible relative! I hear we had some pretty rough characters in our family back then!
