Hey, was just looking at your profile- tell me, have you ever heard of the Hanel Lumber Company? Used to be out in Hood River, Oregon. Not sure if they were distant relatives, but I'd sure like to get ahold of a piece of that lumber with their stamp on it.

It's amazing that you can learn so much about so many things associated with railroading from so many people, almost all of whom you will likely never meet in person...and yet they are as friendly and helpful as your family members and best friends.

I learned that there are Norwegians in South Dakota. And I'd like to meet one if I was 2,000 miles closer.[:)]
I learned that Canadians, Aussies and Brits are well behaved on American forums.
I learned about Terraserver, and now I'm addicted.
I learned that there are lots of PRR fans, and almost no NYC fans.[:(]

...that you can bid on your very own slightly (but not gently) used AMTRAK locomotive on E-bay....

...that Mark Hemphill has been taken away by hostile aliens to plan the use of shackle cars in a foreign country. (Come home, Mark. CSX needs you, man! Really... just read the last issue of TRAINS.)

...that being a professional railroader is a lot harder than it seems.. but that most of them make it look sooooo easy.

....that it's OK to bellow "Look at the choo choo!" to one's grandchildren... even though the train is headed up by diesels.

In addition to what I said earlier, I have come to appeciate the professionals (Ed, MWH, the Mudchicken, among others) on this forum who really know and enjoy their work and are more than happy to share what they know with the rest of us who enjoy watching their work.

Here's to the professionals on this forum, thanks for putting up with us and expanding our knowledge.

The P.E. is the Pacific Electric Railway. It was an interurban in the Los Ageles area for years and years. Back in the early 1900s the P.E. had a horrendous accident (for that time period) and could not pay off all of the claims associated with the incident, so the S.P. stepped in and took care of the claims for the company and basicly took it over. The seniority of the train and engine emplyees was merged on March 31,1965 and the date was set back to March 31,1964 much to the dismay of 81 people that had hired out between those dates on the P.E. as prior right men and were now SP and not entitled to the agreements that covered the P.E. folks. So, in short, "save your ticket.... the P.E. will rise again " was a joking slogan amongst the men that were involved at the time, hoping that our beloved RR would somehow resurrect. There is still areas of the L.A. basin today that are referred to as the merged territory. The P.E. also had one heck of a freight operation. If you do a search on google I believe you may find quite a bit of info on the Pacific Electric.

Virlon: Were you one of the P.E. employees involved? Or just a fan of theP.E?

BNSF railfan: Does the Boone subdivision extend to Blaire? Or does it turn south into Omaha?

nanimo73: I've been addicted to Terraserver for years! My brother was an aerial photoghrapher and knew I had an interest in maps and geography . One day he E-mailed and said he had found a website I might enjoy. He was correct!! A lot of the images come through EROS data center, near where I live.

blhanel: The Hanel lumber company is not familiar to me, but I'll check around. I doubt you'll find an actual board with the name on it though. Most mill marks are a jumble of codes and numbers now. It's almost as if they want to hide their names. Ironically, most plaster their names all over the wrapper on the unit of lumber.

Really? Have you used Google's map/ariel photography service as well? I noticed that SOME of their ariels are more up to date than terraservers. (for example the Wabash bridge over the mississippi)

Italics mine, but the real railroaders do deserve a hearty vote of thanks for patiently helping us see the error of our idealistic ways when appropriate. And, as someone else pointed out, for telling us how hard it really is while making it look so easy...

I hired out just after the consolidation date and worked the P.E. for 10 1/2 years before transferring to San Luis Obispo CA. where I retired after 40 years......P.E. had the best jobs around in those days and amongst the highest paid also. When I hired out we made $22.08 for 8 hours (100 miles). On the SP they were making around $19.00 or so for the 8 hours.

Some things I have learned on this forum:

1. There are some very, very good people on here.
2. Have even met a couple of them in person, and correspond with several
of them by phone or email.
3. No matter how old or young you are, you can always learn something
new here.
4. Like Mookie, I didn't before, and still don't know squat about railroading.
But people here, and my husband at home, are very patient with me.

farmer03: I agree wholeheartedly. Threads and posts are much easier to read and understand if only the wording is spelled correctly. Grammer and punctuation also helps.

Murphy Siding: Your explanation of behavior was well written. Hopefully there will be a change of attitude and types of questions or statements made.

Oh, if you were to come and visit my "museum" I would have probably let you in for free, but since you told the whole world about my project I'll have to charge you double. j/k [:D]

I learned that the GP28 is not an updated form of the GP18.
-that there's still a lot to learn about railroads past and present

-and I've learned more about the passenger trains of old (pre-Amtrak)

-visiting trains.com helps to make the slow time in the office go by faster [;)]

I have learned that I still have a lot more to learn, and no where near enough time to learn it in.

I learned that a few of you are much more wise than you let on...like the Mookie.

And that just because someone is "smart" doesn’t mean they are knowledgeable, or wise!

I have seen that some of you care more about the people here than the trains, and some of you care about trains more than you should!

I have learned that, because we don’t see each other face to face, we tend to leave our prejudices out of our conversation, which means we tend to listen to what each of the others say, instead of what they look like.

Speaking of looks; I now know that Dan looks like a pilot, and the Mudchicken is neither, muddy or chicken, that is.

Oh, and I learned that Wabash still has the mirror!

What I thought I *knew* about railroad history via the conventional railroad press isn't always an accurate account of what actually occurred. Thank the Good Lord for the folks who dare defy the oligarchs and history revisionists!

I learned that there is so much truth on the internet that I no longer have to watch Fox News or listen to Rush Limbaugh.
