Well over here in Australia after Hurricane Katrina petrol or gas as you call it is AUD $1.40 a litre on average in all our capital cities which works out to about $3.20 a gallon i think (my maths aint that good on converting from litres to gallons).

"mild hybrid" has a limited ability to run on electric motor. Gas engine runs all the time. Electric motor is just there to recover braking energy and assist with acceleration. Honda Accord hybrid is an example.

"full hybrid" has more capable electric system. Can run straight electric at low speeds with gas engine not running. Toyota Prius and Ford Escape are examples.

You only give the tree huggers more reason to gloat, do we need to hear more about
precious fossil fuels, global warming, blah, blah, blah?

Theres no shortage of oil in Alaska or off the West Coast, as soon as we subdue
the environmental wackos, we can start pumping and be rid of the blackmail
exerted by the OPEC nations.

As for now I'm going to gas up the old Tahoe and railfan myself silly.

Oltmannd - then the Civic hybrid is a "mild hybrid" - it has the same system as the Honda Accord. I hit an average of 42 mpg today - should get to 50 mpg by the time I hit 600 miles.
I get the $2K tax credit, too.

One station dropped its price here today to $2.479...
most of the others are at $2.499.

today it was a mere $1.169 for normal ulp and 1.237 for Premium down .20c from last week. 2 months ago it was around .98c and start of this year was around 90c a litre and last year hovered around .75-90c a litre and if you payed more than that it was outragous amazing how quick we adjust isnt it?
already what the prices are is cheap and anywere from what it is now to about $1.30 is reasonable

And it never comes down to level it was before the major increase.

BTW in Tulsa Tuesday afternoon the price was $2.37 and by Wednesday evening it was $2.60. Here we go again.

Talked to a relative who's a used car dealer yesterday- he said that hybrids are nice, but you pay an extra $4000 for it versus a standard gasoline-engine car. That extra $4000 still buys alot of gas. Even at today's prices, I don't think you'd break even for several years. That tax credit helps, though. Forgot about that.

It's not the "breaking even", it's four other factors -- as a businessman who travels to the Middle East, I like not using as much of their oil as I used to. Second, the tax credit helps with the mathematics. Third, I sure like driving past stations where others, unfortunately here in Florida, are lined up for fuel or, worse yet, hoping fuel shows up.
Finally, yesterday I did stop for fuel and I started pumping at the same time a woman in a Chevy Tahoe did at the next pump. I topped it out at $13.48 and when I drove off, she was passing the $50 mark. Hybrids aren't perfect, but they sure help decrease our dependence on foreign oil.

Oh, I heard that most diesel locomotives are, by definition, hybrid technology. Now THAT really makes me feel good. And Ford today announced a 10x increase in hybrid production by 2010.

...There is no question our oil facilities in the Gulf are at risk again....with a concentration of fields along the east Texas coast so once again we're at risk with some of our domestic production....Hurricanes are really messing with the orderly production of oil for our economy....But at the same time many of us believe we're being taken advantage of with such horrible price increases along the "pipeline of supply".

I am not stressed and not ir-RITA-ted about your comment.
We are in the peak oil-moment,with no doubt- but what does this mean ?

Are our fuel sources empty ? NO ,who think this is not well educated/informated.
The only problem is the adhoc-delivery,and this decides the price.
We do not use crude oil for our engines but refined/destilled/cracked fuels,so not
the worldwide crude oil market is important,but the worldwide raffinery capacity.

Shock therapy ? I do not know what you mean,are you physically active/passive involved with these sector/-s ?
A. You think about body treatment (conform with Convention of Geneve ?)
B. You mean that this price increase could shock my life-style:
the U:S:A. has got the E:P:A:,a similar "THINKTANK" is in Germany the
"Umweltbundesamt" and their price-"PROPHECY"in the 90`:
5 DM per LITER ,this are today +/- 11,25$ per gallon.
