Well, my offices today were an SW1 and an 0-4-0.

I started off the day in the cab of SW1 705, pulling the steamer and a couple of cars out of town so the steamer could pull everything back.   Occasionally the involved some pusher duty - that little 0-4-0 bogged down a bit on the hills.  (Of course, so did the SW1).

My "office" for the afternoon was Viscose #6, as pilot for the crew.  Didn't touch the controls, or the coal scoop, but got a better appreciation of what it takes to run one of those teakettles...

Friday night, after the steamer was fired up and ready to go, we wandered off to Big Moose for dinner.  With the steamer and a caboose.  I'm not sure, but I think that was one of the longest excursions #6 has taken recently.

Didn't get many pictures, what being I was operating crew most of the time.

Hello Saturday

Got chores done this morning.Summerrail is going on in Marion right now. However we were invited to a wedding. It is in Lima.So we can do a quick look at how plugged up CSX on the Toldeo sub.We will be meeting with our California pen pal in Deshler tomorrow. We will be looking somewhere else on Monday. He has already found 4 matched W&LE units on a train going east at Carey Ohio.

Norm yes school fees and such is expensive. We took advantage of our states tax free holiday to get Matt's clothes for school.I can't imagine what it's like now for people with multiple kids in school. Also throw in extra if they participate in sports or play in the band.Going to go get cleaned up.

stay safe

Joe

To the Cleveland area for a family wedding.  Got off of I70 between Frederick and Hagerstown account accident had traffic backed up for miles....Decided to take the PA Turnpike and its $18.25 toll to go 130 miles (Breezewood to the Western End),  Got stuck in a 6 mile meltdown account of a FedEx Truck and another getting together  and burning off the spilled fuel.

Found out I would be able to take I68 to I79 and get on the PA turnpike past its last WB toll booth.  EB there is a toll booth at the State Line so the strategy only works one way.

Joe, Don't know how old Matt is but I suspect he is nearing his senior year in high school. I read on line (so it must be true) that is an expensive year for parents. I hope you and the missus survive that. Not being a parent I should disqualify myself from commenting.

But judge that kid standing over there told me that the passenger train would already have passed on its scheduled time. (92)

Something like the bit in "My Cousin Vinny" about the train coming by the hotel:

Vinny: Does that freight train come through here at 5:00 A.M. every morning?
Clerk: No, sir, it's very unusual.
Next morning after the train comes through again at the same time.
Vinny: Yesterday you told me that freight train hardly ever comes through here at 5:00 A.M. in the morning.

Clerk: I know. She's supposed to come through at ten after 4:00.

Well, two years of hard work and organization, 300 member attendees, and who knows how many at the muster, and the antique fire truck event is finally over (except for the critiques, etc).  By all reports everyone was impressed - one of the smoothest such events in most people's memories.

I slept in this morning...

We took over 100 of the attendees on a field trip on the railroad on Friday - they thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

Well, something going on around LNK - only 3 trains (coal, grain, AMTK) in 2 hours

Amtrak #6 went thru at 9:24 - heading for CHI.  Normal time is 3+am, so not sure if today's train or yesterdays (fly over & thru country, you know).  But - unusual beside the late time was a UP engine on point with 2 Amtrak engines - couldn't tell if they were working or not - AND a lot of coaches - full!  Usually we see, if at all, about 7 coaches max.  This had to be closer to 15.  Will never know why, but just reporting an observation.  I just told my driver my plausible story.  Sounded good to both of us.

good evening

Deshler was interesting today.People from the forum and some from my old hometown were there.Csx had an autorack train make the wrong turn in Toledo.X-276 is suppossed to go from Toledo to Willard via Fostoria. They went south across the diamond in the middle of the Deshler parade. Then they tried to back up using the switch at south Deshler. That caused the autoracks to upcouple. So the had to use the another switch further north. They backed around the SW wye then got to go east to Willard. The conductor had quite a ride on the back.Need to get to bed.Mission festival at church in the morning.

This week, I started getting my fat butt out on my bike.  Just riding the local rail-trail, but we've had some beautiful mornings.

I'm lucky that I have a choice of nice trails really close to me.  Plus, I've been getting a little soft in the mid-sections itting in that seat these past few months.

I'm barely above training wheel stage, but some would argue I'm the same with my engineer abilities.

In my area - most of the trails still have active rails!  I have had too many acquaintences killed and/or seriously injured to desire to ride a bike.  I'll walk.

It's been fun.  But it isn't much fun anymore.   Signing off for now.

We had a cool day in which it barely made it out of the 50s, with a strong breeze.  I was able to make the first pass on the front yard, and a trip with the yard broom, between sprinkles.  Now, this evening, the sky has cleared, and we're getting our warmest temperatures of the day.

Perhaps I should finish the front lawn.

'Pop Up' Thunderstorms around the area yesterday evening.  None of them where I was, however, where they did hit they were dangerous.  Falling tree crushed a passing car and killed a 14 year old passenger in the car.

We're getting some nasty weather in the area right now.  I hope it gets it out of its system by tomorrow - the big fire apparatus muster starts at 9AM.

Took over 100 convention-goers for a ride on the railroad today.  They all seemed to enjoy it.  After the ride, they got to see the local fire department (including a early 1900's Cadillac fire truck) and eat at the local restaurants.

Was going to set up some stuff tonight at the muster site, but there are severe warnings out...

August is our hottest month.  52 @ 7:30a - so much for hot.  WA, OR and N CA seem to have all our heat.  Someone must have bumped the weather table and knocked it all to the left.

It's 76 here right now. on the backside of the Rockies. MC, how is it on the front side
