I tried to learn what time #6 left Lincoln and Omaha today, and what time it is expected in Chicago--and the answer to the inquiries was "Status is currently unavailable due to a service disruption. "

 

 

 

I heard #6 on the radio when they started across Council Bluffs.  I didn't check the time, but would say sometime between 8 and 9am.  I was hoping to meet them, but was already going through Missouri Valley when I heard them.

Memorial Day, EB Cal Zephyr detouring around BNSF derailment in Iowa, Amtrak track map shows it near Missouri Valley (Jeff H's territory, as I recall) so it will probably head east on UP tracks which may put it through Rochelle later today.  Might get better screen grabs this time than those from November 10, 2015, when it came through at 4:45 pm., with UP power on the point, five minutes after sunset.

 

Westbound on the line up, too.  One coworker saw pictures of the BNSF derailment and thinks it might be a couple days of detours.

found a web cam of Taihachapi loop, I believe it's the upper end of the loop, having spent quite a bit of time there about 30 years ago. Watching a BNSF crawl Eastbound, and lots of traffic on the highway. And there is a dispatcher keyed in on it.

A WB windmill blade train on BNSF just cleared the diamonds at 1500 CDT behind a CN and a BCOL unit. One blade over two cars with the smaller ends meeting on a three car set. I didn't get a count of the actual number of blades. I guess the towers travel separately. Some assembly required.

The Virtual Railfan sites that stream on YouTube seem to be much more stable than what is coming from Rochelle these days.

I can see why you might think there is an audio problem. I have had the cam on since 1440 CDT and there wasn't a single train until two in the last half hour or so. Not even any people around to check for voices, just barely perceptable wind noise.

The stuttering is bad though. I noticed while watching the trains that in the lower left corner of the screen you can see where pages are being loaded, all the time. A flurry of these pages preceeded bouts of bad stuttering. Once you are on a page there should be some way of stopping more loading.

Windows 7 with Firefox 59.

Who pays what on railroad crossings at grade is specified in the contract between the parties when the crossing is created.  In general, the 2nd carrier to the location pays for the maintenance of the crossing to the standards specified by the 1st carrier.  The idea is for the 1st carrier to be 'held harmless' because of the arrival of the 2nd carrier.

Agreed.  And, normally, the 1st carrier will actually perform the maintenance and bill the 2nd for time and materials.  Amazingly, I never heard of the 2nd challenging any charges.  This might have been because, in the east at least, my road might have been 1st at one location and yours at another location not far away.

Did anyone else notice the camera shaking at 1339 CDT when that machine was just to the right of the pavillion. I can't figure out what it does, but it sure must have some power behind it.

UP must figure it's a slow weekend- looks like MOW left their tie-replacing equipment on #1 just past the west signals.  Latest WB on #2 didn't even make warning toots...

EDIT: Westbound autorack going through now, he's using short toots on the horn all the way.

Back during my time as Asst. Trainmaster at Locust Point Yard in Baltimore.  Both Coca-Cola and American Sugar had their plants about a mile apart.  There were regular switches of GACX air-slide covered hoppers that moved between AmStar and Coke - back and forth with the same crew performing service to both customers.

Thanks Carl, that is the car I noticed. The size of the logo is what got me thinking it was serving some purpose specific to GATX, as opposed to serving a shipper.

EEC reminded me of a car I saw up here a number of years ago. Something had damaged the paint job, and it was replaced by a very shaky hand brushed replacement. It was the most suspiscious looking "legitimate" reporting mark paint job I have ever seen.

Bruce, I'm pretty sure I saw the same car in Elmhurst yesterday (the timing would have been about right for a car coming east through Rochelle).

Not a demonstrator in any way, shape, or form...it was an ordinary 50-foot box car in fresh paint.  Having said that, General American is the present owner of the large fleets of box cars once owned by SSI Rail, Itel Corporation, BRAE Corporation, General Electric Rail Services Corporation, and other similar predecessors.  

(Have you noticed how quickly the EEC box cars have vanished?  That's because the East Erie Commercial Railroad was a GE-owned subsidiary, and the box cars no longer are!)

A lot of the repainted box cars from this assortment carry the GATX logo on the sides...this one seemed to be spread out a bit wider than normal, if we're talking about the same car.  But you'll find box cars with the GATX trademark lettered WRWK (Providence & Worcester), BKTY (UP--used on most of the ex-EEC box cars that had been leased to UP), and LRS (Laurinburg & Southern...a shortline that serves pretty much the same function to General American as the Hartford & Slocomb used to serve for GE and its predecessors--just a place to reletter cars to collect per diem).

Now, to the car we saw:  LRS 167.  It was formerly HS 6381, previously HS 70123.  It was built in September 1978.  Its origin was in EACH (East Camden & Highland) series 2001-2200.

Just saw a GATX boxcar . . . in a shade of red any fire department would be proud to have on their truck.

I posted that hoping someone would have more info on the car. I was wondering if it was part of one those trains you see pictures of in the magazine, that go around training first responders. Or, I was wondering if it was some sort of deomonstrator car GATX was building to sell to new shippers.

It just seemed to stand out too much to be part of the workaday carload business.

When using firefox, there is a audio control on the right side of the tab next to the delete tab X

I can't use firefox, because of a huge green bar on the screen, I've tried updating the flash, installed a third party flash, no change.

A note to those experiencing audio issues: I just noticed there's a sound mute button in the bar underneath the video panel and it is muted by default on my Mac. This may not be so for everyone, but if you're not getting any audio, it's something worth checking!

Just saw a GATX boxcar on a EB UP manifest train in a shade of red any fire department would be proud to have on their truck. It seemed to be brand new and graffitti free.

Safari is still just giving me still images--no video.

Firefox (also on my Mac) is working, video with sound, but is jerky--ever few seconds.

What's wrong with this cam?  The YouTube cams work all right in Safari.

Works OK with W10 & Firefox on same computer.

Working better for me this morning... lots less jumpy (but still 'some' stuttering), full screen okay.  Sound is low, but present.  The Pause, Sound and Full Screen icons are partially off the bottom of the screen (not bad, but low).
