Good Morning.
I thought I would write and let you know how things are going around here. It is quiet right now, but there was a lot of unusual activity yesterday evening. I didn't see them, but you could hear a lot of unusual diesel powered vehicles moving about. I thought at the time they were redeploying Tonka Toys that would normally be moved on lowboy trailers. But I see on one news website that the City looks like they are using big trucks that are normally used in the oil patch, to suction up water. These trucks don't normally get used on paved roads, so they look like they are all axles and dual wheels from behind the cab to the back of the truck.
The Mayor of Medicine Hat was just on TV saying that CP is diligently working on restoring service through the area. There are some odd reports on activity on the Crowsnest line, but what I think people are seeing is supplies being moved in to repair the damages in the area. Being a publicly traded company, you would think CP should be required to post the bad news along with the good, to aid shareholders on making investment decisions. But I suppose they would tell you everyone is to busy to post updates on their website.
I might try and get a look at the river later on today.

Greetings from deepinaholein Texas, otherwise known as the Dallas Flying J......
Got all settled into my new(er) truck, am enjoying many of the "extras" that were spec'ed with this order, like the stereo with the 10-inch subwoofer under the bed in the sleeper. I don't know if I now sound like those kids with the big stereos in their cars, they probably couldn't hear it over that big Cummins of mine anyways......
The truck also has a factory installed 1800 watt inverter, have the laptop plugged into it at the moment. When I get some extra money, I'll go out and buy a microwave and a small flat screen TV to fit in the cubby and the flat screen mount, respectively......
About 95 here today, supposed to be about the same here all week, hopefully after tomorrow I can start getting some good mileage, these little checks are not going to cut it much longer......
See everyone later....

The release notes that CP had outages at over forty locations. No wonder I couldn't keep up with it all. Glad to read no loss of life was incurred during the restoration process.

Sticky here in the wilds of northern New York, too. Yesterday you could break out into a sweat just standing there. Not quite so bad today. Still a threat of thunderbumpers.
Ran an EMS call last night for childbirth. Except that mom had already delivered when the 9-1-1 call was placed, so we just made sure everything was on the up and up and sent mom and son to hospital for a checkup.
Cute little bugger - had a pout that would do any pouter proud.
Running on a VIP special tomorrow. I'm in the engine, so I won't be doing much, if any, schmoozing.

Things have started to settle back to normal around my place. We received a notice from the landlord that when the power went off abruptly Friday morning it damaged one of our two hot water heaters, so the laundry room is closed until further notice. Yesterday afternoon I got a knock on my door from a policeman who was going around doing a count on everyone and making sure everything was alright.
The one ongoing problem that is beginning to annoy me is that the City, while saying the water system is safe, has has had to put much more chemicals into the water to deal with the increase in debris brought on by the rising water. They say taste is affected by smell and that smell is really making it difficult to enjoy a drink of water as well as any juice or coffee made with it. During the high usage time, around suppertime last night, I flushed my toilet and within about two minutes you could smell those chemicals all through the apartment despite having windows open. I have never been a big bottled water user but I am going to break down later today and buy a couple of gallons to use for making juice, coffee, and ice cubes, as well as drinking it to take my prescriptions.
The cleanup activity near my building has subsided somewhat and moved on to other parts of the city.
Have a good day.
New babies always make the world seem like a better place - for a few minutes, at least.
Bruce - I am with you on bottled water. We have some of the best tasting water in our state and yet our duplex neighbor carts in cases of bottled water. Maybe he hates carrying all the extra $$$ around.
Not sure where it came from since I haven't been paying close attention, but a storm went thru Sun nite and really tore up parts of Omaha - 50 miles NE of us. Still some power out and trees all over the place. Didn't hear a thing! I think it went just west and north of us -
Had to hold off fishing a little this morning. Up @ dark 30 but squall line going thru - more noise and lights than wet. So finally got to fish @7:30. Breezy/cool - good sit in the car and read the paper! Driver caught only one - but it makes him smile all day. That's what counts.
CA company all day tomorrow. Gone Thurs noon. Think it is what they call a drive-by?

Bruce:
The city, in an over-abundance of caution, has "charged" the water line pipes to disinfect the system. You will see this in places where there are line breaks, repairs or heavy fire hydrant use. Pretty standard stuff.
It doesn't matter how small the break or opening - a small impurity can thrive in a water system. If floodwater (tainted with sewage) gets into the well field - look out! The hypersensitive hypochondriacs will crowd the hospital ER. (Mooks knows all about Mud, K-Mart & the weed spray truck "incident")
(and it is amusing how "not really clean" some of that bottled water can become. - Like El Gato Mooks, bottled water is much over-rated in my book. What's mineral water to some is just hard water to others. DiningCar managed to survive water so hard you had to chew it where he grew up....He is getting a little rusty and crusty around the edges now)
Mud (= Water + Dirt)
mudchickenMooks knows all about Mud, K-Mart & the weed spray truck "incident"
Now that sounds like quite a story!
I just returned from buying a 10L container of water, along with some other groceries. If I remember correctly from my school days, that should be 2.75 US gal. for our American readers.
I got my first, on foot, close up look at the river and you can see it has dropped from obviously the highest point it has ever been. I am glad I wasn't close enough to see that, when it was happening. I wasn't out of the house three minutes when I saw a really big John Deere excavator rumbling down the road. In normal times you would never see a machine that size not being moved on a lowboy trailer. I guess compared to using the business end of the machine, moving down a paved road must put almost no strain on the engine. It didn't make any more noise going down the road than any car.
Next month I predict that one of the headlines in the business section of the newspaper is going to be "Canadian Suppliers of Yellow Police Tape Experience Record Second Quarter Revenues"! That stuff is now lying on the ground all over the place.
That's it for now.
Wasn't Mud's fault, the railroad's or the weed-spray contractor's fault. But sure got the blame for it and visits from several county officials and a deputy or two.
"Hello? Topeka? What's the ten digit item number for bail money?" (for at least the second time in my career)
My well is drilled into limestone. To call my water "hard"" would be an understatement.
But it does taste good. I've been using what was my daughter's filter pitcher more because it reminds me to refill it when I use it than because I need to filter my water.
My water heater, on the other hand, has to be mucked out from time to time to get rid of all the stuff that settles into the bottom.
I tried using tap water in my ultrasonic humidifier, which resulted in a fine white dust throughout the house.
All the weather happened east of us again today. More forecast for the rest of the week, with Thursday supposed to be particularly wet.
Truck cleaned out, now to get my clothes ready for tomorrow. I'm one of the engineers, but I like to keep my conductor's uniform ready to go "just in case."
got the chores done early in town after work.guessers say more thunderstorms later.Matt saw 2 cp units taking 501 eastbound in defiance.he will turn right and go south for lima and cincinnati at deshler.Heard a nordco truck get permission to follow a roadmaster on track 2.Dispatcher said you know you'll be blocking the tie crew in for a bit.But off they went.Off to bed for me.

Thought I'd pop in here for a change of pace. It's been a while!
Nothing overly exciting to report...but then that's nice too. My hand's all healed up from winter's escapade and the house is still standing despite my best efforts to replace siding/roofing material. Aedan turns 4 on Sunday...and I have 11 days of vacation I'm cashing in starting tomorrow...so that will be nice. May even make a concerted effort to get trackside somewhere.
Off to "Pick things up and put them down"...
Dan
Hello everyone. Dan, good to see you were able to come in for a spell; also good to hear that your hand has completely healed. Enjoy your vacation, and it is really hard to believe that Aedan is going to be 4 years old!!
Not a whole lot going on with me, just trying to survive our heat & humidity (even in the trailer, it is getting warm, and not enough extra money to get central a/c recharged.)
Woke up at 4:50 this morning to pouring rain. We kept hearing rumbles of thunder yesterday evening, but no rain. Finally was able to go back to sleep about 9 a.m., just for about an hour.
Everyone take care, keep safe and have a good day. And stay hydrated!
Good afternoon.
Things have settled back to normal in the apartment and in my building. You can still hear a number of unusual sounds of big vehicles moving around outside though. With less overall traffic there is not a lot more noise, it just sounds different. You may have seen over on the Newswire where it is going to be weeks yet before our LRT south line is back in service. There are two neighbourhoods just west of one of the LRT tunnels (Cemetery Hill) that won't have all of their power turned on for days yet.
73° and sunny now. It took a while to get this warm however. Unlike down where BOC lives in Ontario and many of our US readers, Calgary isn't normally bothered by the HHH phenomena. In fact, all of the standing water around here, coupled with our more northerly latitude, means it is taking a lot longer each day to really warm up. This is actually causing the standing water problem to last longer. I sure would love to see a week of +80° days starting at about noon each day. Then we could go from this spring like feeling to actual summer weather.
That's about it for now.
Bruce - sounds like you're sending your weather to us. We're under advisory for flooding Thursday and Friday.
Should make an interesting weekend on the railroad. I got wet enough today working our VIP special...
Bruce,
Trade ya our summer for your summer….hit 100, add the humidity felt like 105.

Good Evening...oh...good morning...I guessBusy day here..had a pile of meetings and interviews to attend to...we are currently hiring more people here and, of course, little ol' moi get stuck doing these...yike!!! This also meant that my lair of doom project got waylaid and will have to continue over the holiday weekend...yay
muggy here in nw ohio.Thought it was going to be amtrak after work but 2 ns heritage units(mongehela & lackawana) were pulling an oil train westward.Tonight is friday.Chores and errands after a nap.Breakfast is all set.
Good MorningReal muggy out and warm...76F going to go up to 80 feeling like 100F....oh..and those ol' t'underin'boomers as well.Got to attend to some more interviews and such....have a good one!!
Looks like the worst weather will again track south of us. We could use a bit of rain, but not the deluge the atmospheric prognosticators are telling us to watch out for.
Otherwise I'm going to have to water my petunias...
foggy and humid this morning.Ns had an autorack train waiting to go west.Glad it's Friday. Breakfast is all set.
No problem on the petunias. Three tenths of an inch rain overnight, and it looks like the circulation is right over the top of us, so it'll keep raining for a while.
CSX derailed between Albany and Utica on the "Chicago Line." There appears to be significant ripple effects due to this Montgomery County incident.
Ah, petunias! They even make an onion patch look good!
Been a, how shall we say - "Long" 2 days. Company back home and normal seems to be coming back! Generational difference - fast, live by phone and eat funny food vs slow, don't turn on phone and listen to "you eat veggies?"
Have a thorn in paw: Tue nite 10:30 p - fatal car accident exactly one block from our front door. Lady, 47, coming home from work - 2 blocks from her house WB was t-boned on driver's side by 9-16 passenger (we haven't heard for sure) van EB driven by 35 yr old deranged male doing about 75-90 down our street. Police were called 3 times by drivers just before he hit her. This was between 10:08p and 10:30p
Pertinent info: He is an inmate at our correctional facility. He was convicted of 3 DUI's previously. He was in prison now for Meth. He was on work release detail where he would be given a van to go pick up work release people and bring them back to prison or take them to work - after city bus hours. He had just delivered an inmate back to prison and left again....no explanation yet. He wasn't seriously hurt. I saw no skid marks.
According to two witnesses, he was swerving in both lanes and was in her lane when she saw him. She tried to turn into a driveway to get off the street. She leaves behind a husband, 3 grown children, grandchildren and a job she loved in nursing.
I am not upset. I am burnt to a crisp right around the edges.

Not that it will do the deceased any good, but I sure hope that her survivors successfully sue the crap out of the Correction facility for allowing causing this situation to develop.
Inmates around here are chauffered to their appointments, by armed guards. That program sounds like it's going to dissappear soon. Giving a vehicle to an inmate is one thing. Giving a vehicle to an inmate who probably wouldn't be able to get a driver's license is entirely another...
Plenty of problems in the Mohawk Valley - one of our county FD's just sent a team down there to help out due to the flooding. I'm not sure we have anyone who can devote three days to it right now, or we might be sending a team, too.
Off to the railroad for the weekend.
tree68Giving a vehicle to an inmate who probably wouldn't be able to get a driver's license is entirely another...
Man, that is bizarre.
77° and sunny today. Right in my area you would not know we have had so much trouble in the past week. Things seem and sound like a normal day. Yet only a few blocks from me people are cleaning out totally flood ravaged homes.
The unevenness of the recovery is producing a lot of unwanted effects. Traffic reporters say road rage incidents are going way up. The bridge incident mentioned over on the other thread caused major blockades in some areas, and produced some driving maneuvers that will no doubt turn up on Youtube in a couple of days. Fortunately no one has been killed in a traffic accident because of the flood and its' aftermath yet.
The drinking water situation has improved at my place. It no longer has that bad taste or smell, either that, or I have gotten used to it. I prefer to think it is the former. With luck, that 10L container of water I purchased will be my only major bottled water purchase this year.
Hope everyone has a good weekend.
evening
mookie sad news for sure. Saw 2 very faded warbonnet sante fe engines pulling an oil train eastbound today on CSX.We also tried a new restaurant at an old place. They changed to a mexican menu.It wasn't too bad.New employees need to work on a few things but overall it was good.Had some thunderboomers come through.Off to see how Matt is doing with the new trains magazine.
