Oh golly - where to begin:

Houston Ed - just when you think they may be grown and you can let up on the 24/7 worrying....

She's my hero.  I don't fly well, hate heights, would have to turn over and grab that poor man in a death hug but would never let myself be in that place to begin with!

Tree/Joe - Join the club.  We don't have an over abundance of any restaurants here in Lincoln and about 75% of them I won't go near.  2 thoughts - anyone can wait tables.  Everyone tells you that if you need a job.  Go wait tables or do fast food.  That's fine if you are over-organized, have a great memory, and in a sit-down place: courteous w/o being condescending, think fast on your feet, write so you can read it - even if you put it in a puter, can move at a high rate of speed and not either drop it on the customer or all over the floor - the list goes on and on.  I have seen people quit after the first few hours - just didn't have the abilities needed and sometimes the pace is extremely fast!  Trust me - "everyone" does not have what it takes!

But it is summer - early summer.  School is just out and it will take all summer to get these people trained to be even mediocre and then they will quit and either go to another job or back to school and it cycles around.  As winter drags on - the help sometimes gets very good.  Sometimes - they never get it and if you don't have a strong manager somewhere in house- well....

We got free lattes just yesterday - overuse of mouth and no ears!

But if you go in with awareness at the door - you will fare better.  I always ask right up front if there is a manager on duty.  I don't need to see them, just make a mental note that there is someone to talk to if necessary.  They seat me under cold air vent - I ask to be moved immediately - not after food arrived hot and is now cold.

They carry plates of almost hot food thru a large dining area and when you get it - it is room temp.  Send it back immediately.  It comes back hot & dry - it was microwaved and will taste like it.  Call for manager and have them remake order.  Managers need to know these things and will usually always work very hard to make your visit enjoyable.  (Most can cook and wait tables with the best of them)

If management treats you like a cranky old person or is drippingly condescending but food was acceptable, leave and never go back but be sure to tell everyone you know how horrible this place is.  Word of mouth is either wonderful or slow death.

And if your server was either A+ or brand new, trying very hard and scared to death - tip.  Tip accordingly.  Newbies that show promise - deserve a break.  Newbies that are train wreck bad - either need to be re-trained or gone. Tell the manager!!!!

And on the local irritation front - AC is shaky.  Little cool air and fan never shuts off.  Landlord on it, but will take probably all day and maybe 2 to get it fixed.  Maybe longer if they have to replace the unit.  Sigh

SJ, Pat took me to Ruby Tuesday yesterday (we can't begin to thank you enough for introducing us to them!).  Service was a little spotty, but the food was great.  (We'd wait too long for refills on drinks; that was probably the worst offense).  Usually, we try to share a good mood with our server...if they're any good, it helps; if they don't respond in kind, we probably won't get the best service.

Ed, she's already worried about getting old?  All of us (you, me, SJ) know that we really don't have to grow up!  She'll do this again another 50 or so years from now (and probably often in between).  I'm jealous of SJ because she's actually gotten to meet her.

Ed:  I'll stay on the ground, if you ever hear of me falling to my death, it means the bridge I was crossing dropped out from under me........

Got a gate built for our deck, hope the daycare inspector is happy with the way I had to do it, no room to install a post on what would be the latch side, so figured out how to latch it on the hinge side.  Gate opens inward, so kids pushing against it from the inside can't get out.......

Back to the road tomorrow, first job is to go get the newer truck.........

Our favorite restaurant in beautiful industrial Gary, Indiana, has a sign on the wall (one of many) which reads,

"Nine out of ten men who try Camels prefer Women."

Quick, now, was the man leading the camel on a pack of camels about fifty years ago wearing a fez?

BOC - have you noticed that cleaning to get rid of "stuff" is like removing hangers in a closet.  It all comes back and brings more.

I can tell you of some other things that multiply. In going through Ricki's things on and about her desk, I found lots of Post-Its, staples, and little pads of notepaper (some of those were collected from various hotels).

I have a kink in my thinking - if anything comes into this house - say a tube of toothpaste.  It doesn't get placed in the bathroom closet until the box is gone.  Everything gets downsized as much as possible before it stays.

So why am I on my 4th go round cleaning closets?  All I have new in mine is some clothes - and they go on those hangers that I have from donating old ones.  Yet I still have "junk" in there that needs to be pulled out and moved to a new home.  Think that is the kink?  I needed it then, but not now?  Hmm

Good Evening..

Well, the mess in the garage is...still...a mess. Every time I go in there it seems that a different form of mess showed up...sigh

Tomorrow will be the same thing as today...try to combat mess in the garage...maybe I should get more than one 50 cubic yard bin for all the 'stuff' in there...Whistling

I'm in the process of weeding/downsizing/whatever-you-want-to-call-it - and it can be a real challenge.  I'm slowly getting past the "but I might have a use for it" angle on a lot of items, but that's been tough.  You know - you throw something away, and two weeks later have to buy the same item...

But that's the main reason I got the larger container from the trash company - in hopes that I'd fill it up on a regular basis.  I haven't been as diligent as I'd like, but I am getting some stuff thrown out...

Finally some nice weather here.  A bit cool on the overnights (it's down to +52F right now), but the days are getting better.  Then there's that 30% chance of showers over the weekend.  Hopefully that won't be a problem.

We have a new Goodwill store in our town.  I suspect that they'll be getting some business from us.  Our regular trash containers have been full to lids-ajar every week since our construction project started.

As for the garage, the car has not been able to go in there since March, as that's the place where the sewing room and kitchen have been stored...as well as some tools, construction materials, and so forth.  As of today, we're just lacking baseboards in the kitchen and the new great-room, and counter-tops in the kitchen, before we can move stuff back in and decide what we no longer need.

(Unfortunately, that won't be the end of it for us.  Then we'll have to move everything out of our living room and dining room so they can refinish the floors in there.  That will require leaving the house, as we won't be able to access the bedrooms and bathroom while that's being done.  Then there is major work to be done in the dungeon basement, where my library will probably be expanded into the crawl space.  Said crawl space is now insulated and lighted, so we just need easier access--maybe a step stool.  The crawl space will enable a lot of archives to be stored, giving the active library more space for organization and expansion.)

As stated here before - I am downsizing.  I will probably downsize for another 3-5 years.  Then continue to live here as health permits. (stairs)

However, my tale of woe - I have two - that's 2 - full-size cedar chests.  One in living room and one upstairs in bedroom.  Both are from the 1940's and were given to me by family members.  They make great storage and even chairs.  And they are super heavy.

I now have nothing to store in them.

However - a word of caution.  When a cedar chest comes into your home - it never leaves.  You can't drag it out to the garbage, to the street so someone will steal it, to your worst enemies house or to the house next door and stick their eternally barking dog in it.  And my daughter and grandchildren are wise to not accepting any large objects from me.

Enter the 2 Men & a Truck.  If I go thru my Xmas list and no one claims one or both, the 2 Men - (probably more like 4 Men) will be taking both to an unsuspecting Goodwill and dropping them in their parking lot!

If someone on here expresses an interest, send me more than a lot of postage and I will mail one or both to you!  No charge on chests - free to a good home or two.....
