A good Sunday to all.  Sorry I haven't been in lately, but have been doing other things.  Hard to believe we are in June, especially when we are having early May temps.  Yesterday was a semi rainy day.  My brother & sis in law were going to take all the grandkids fishing yesterday.  Once a year, the Jim Beam Distillery opens the gates to let parents/grandparents bring the kiddos in to fish in their lake (something they don't even let employees do).  But w/the threat of t-storms possible, they decided not to chance it.  By afternoon, the sun was shining a little bit, and man, was it humid outside.

Today's a little better, with plenty of sunshine, but cool temps (70 F right now), supposed to make it up to 79, maybe 80 degrees this afternoon.

BOC, am glad to hear that your tests came out for the good!!  Everyone have a good afternoon, take care and see you all later.

Ed - It is sometimes discussed in the case of line of duty deaths (LODD) whether the firefighters had any business being where they were.  Sounds like in this case, they did.

Odds are the structure was made heavily of "engineered" components - trusses, etc.  They're great for construction but not so much if they catch fire.

People are always amazed at how fast fire can spread.

Decent weekend on the railraod.  Not a lot of riders, but ops went well.  Had a heck of a thunderstorm overnight Saturday, but it didn't bring anything down on the tracks.

Plenty to keep me busy around the house.  Looks like Mom will be here in a couple of weeks to attend her reunion.  Still don't have her travel plans, though.

Better get off the computer and to work.

Larry,

Mid 60s construction back in the day when “to code” meant what you could pay the inspector to ignore, heavy plaster ceiling or support wall collapsed, these four separated from the others in the “fast attack” group searching for civilians.

One of them was a mid 20 year old female “new hire” probationary fire fighter; it’s hard on the department to lose one that young, much less her and the other three all at once.

BOC - I had to smile @ the straight pipes.  Our landlord (mid 70's) drives a fairly new truck and it has some non-factory pipes on it.  They are a little loud, but are so mellow - don't think he would ever get stopped for them.  With house shut up, I can still tell when "Harold is here"!

'68 fastback what?  (I should probably know, but refresh my memory)

Southwest Motel, Houston.   Started out bad and got worse.

Exhausts - Back in the 60's, a volunteer fire department here in the county had a pumper with straight pipes.  Always a hit with the motorheads at a parade, but I'm not sure I'd want to run it at a fire...

Before I was in my department, a small tanker they had had stacks - and I don't think it had mufflers.  They were all gas engines then.  I understand they had "flappers" on it, and when leaving town up the hill those flappers would be straight up...

Time for bed.  To beat to work on that project tonight, so it's up first thing in the morning to get ink on the printing press...

Field crew opened a manhole to a culvert this morning, only to find a growling bear.

Manhole cover replaced post haste. [Nikes don't fail me now!]

Gonna be one of those weeks,.....Confused

My Reader's D version of a blob for today:  Spring house cleaning....Will be going to hospital for a rest here shortly.  5 closets - 4 are completely cleaned now.  1 to go.  (3rd time thru the last one!)

For all you single men and domestic gods - I have 2 feather pillows to sleep on - one goes in queen pillowcase really snazzy - 2nd one - well try stuffing what seems like about 50 pounds of feathers into a regular size pillowcase.  SoapBox

Going to tackle the kitchen cupboards after the rest in the hospital!  Smile, Wink & Grin  Guess you really don't get rest in a hospital, do you.....  maybe I will just go curl up in a chair and practice my engineer napping!

Downsizing, don'tchaknow....

Hi 8NSand - long time no see here.  Come back and visit again!

Having some light work done at KW, so drug out the laptop......

Exhausts - With all the new emissions articles under the trucks nowadays, I can roll past a sign saying "no Jake brake" with my Jakes on full, and nobody would notice.......

I have also made the mistake one night of parking next to a guy that had eight inch straight pipes, and he ran the truck all night long.  Hard to get sleep that night.....

Dad had a -pre 68 John Deere 4020 Diesel with a rain cap on the muffler, the bushing was worn just enough that the rain cap would rattle at low idle.  Always liked the sound of that 414 cubic inch straight six under a heavy load in the field.......

Don't see many rain caps on semis anymore, they still make them for straight cut and mitered stacks, on the right truck and balanced right, they look great.....

Mud - I bet even the slow guys ran really fast, go for the restart.....

Thing is, you don't have to be fast - just faster than the next slowest guy...

Well, the breakfast bar is up in time for Brunch, anyhow...

Nice and sunny today, but another cool start, just like BC.

The forecast for the weekend was predictable.  Despite early prognostications of half decent weather, it appears that our antique fire truck muster this coming Saturday (a decidedly outside event) will again be plagued by cool temps and rain.  For the third year running...

But I still have to get stuff ready for it.  Off to the tasks at hand.

BOC - do you have anything blooming close by?  Something bigger than flowers?  Or mold?

Our neighbors have a Tree of Heaven (it stinks) and it really bothers my eyes and nose when it leafs out and again when it blooms.

Otherwise, you probably do hab a bad code...
