Quentin, sorry to hear of more difficulties for Jean.

One of my Dad's relatives did a genealogy study of the our family, and it seems there might be a bit of a genetic predisposition to railroading.

My great-grandfather worked in what the genealogist, a non-railroader, described as "railroad shops" in Liverpool, Eng. in the 1870's and 1880's. I don't know what RR that would be, but considering Liverpool was the #1 port in England, I suspect the RR infrastructure there must have been extensive. He then came out to Canada and worked in more "railroad shops" in London, ON for a short time. Again I don't know which RR that would be, but maybe when Barry feels better, he could post, and provide an idea. Great-grandfather moved out to Saskatchewan to begin farming in 1892.

Somewhere around 1905-10 two of my Dad's uncles hired themselves and several teams of their horses out to grade the Grand Trunk Pacific, now CN, line coming and through Melville, SK. This is now the CN Winnipeg-Saskatoon-Edmonton mainline.

And finally, when Dad was 18, and working for the Post Office, he started carrying sacks of mail down to the CPR station at Meyronne, SK, and he knew what he wanted to do when he grew up.

61° and partly cloudy again today, but it does seem nicer than that.

As to genealogy, I have never been interested to the point of doing research myself, but one of my brothers and his wife did quite a bit--and shared the results with the rest of us. One of the shared bits is a chart of the Degge line (that was the name until early in the 1800's) going back to the tme of Henry IV of England. Another one is a book by the wife of a descendant of my great-grandfather, which lists all of her husband's ancestors who lived on the Northern Neck (between the Potomac and Rappahanock rivers) of Virginia. Some of the people are quite interesting, such as the lady's husband's grandfather--he married a cousin of my father; after she died, he married her older sister (who raised her sister's children)--and after she died, he married my aunt!

From the chart and the book, I learned that my great-great-great grandfather, John Degge, married his uncle's granddaughter (thus making her second cousin to her children). Now you know what is wrong with meSmile. They gave their first son the same name as that of one of her brothers--causing confusion to many people doing research and somehow missing John Degge's record (such people have thought that my great-great grandfather was his uncle's son (by an unknown marriage), especially since he was known as "John Tunstall Degge the Younger," even though he was just a few years younger than his uncle.

It can be interesting to learn of our forebears, yet no matter how famous or not they were, we are who we are, and we are not our ancestors or our cousins from way back. I mention cousins, since through my paternal grandfather, my paternal grandmother, a certain man's father and his mother I am both first and second cousin (a few times removed, of course) to this particular Virginian who was born on the Northern Neck and was well-known in his day. He did his thing; I have tried to do my thing.

Dan!!  Welcome back to the fold:  was beginning to think you had abandoned us.  Those are a couple of great pictures of Aedan and Misty.  And you're right:  it sure doesn't seem like he about to turn 3 years old!  My, how time does fly!!

Darren, thanks for the picture you posted, as well.  It is good to hear that no other lives have been lost, and no more home destroyed by the wildfires.

Haven't been feeling too well today:  queasy stomach, just not feeling up to par.  Didn't even go for my walk this morning.

I have made some salads for supper tonight, and there are also cold cuts on the serving station, with plenty of add-ons for sandwiches.  Think that here at home, I may just boil some potatoes, mash them and maybe fix a little bit of milk gravy to put over the mashed taters.  Have hardly been out of the house today, and only on the front porch, where is is shady.  Hopefully, I'll feel more like myself tomorrow.

Everyone enjoy your evening, take care and keep cool, and keep everything on the rails.

Good Morning Railfans!

It's 56F and Cloudy; YES!  A cool front is pushing in and we are getting a break from the abnormally high temperatures we have been deal with.  So, as long as this front does not bring too much Wind / Lightning it could make for a nice day today.

Looks like 3-Green lights for me...

FIRE NEWS:

The main fire (High Park - Neat Ft. Collins) broke containment yesterday near some homes but the Fire Fighters were able to respond quickly so no additional homes were lost.  It is still growing (mainly to the West) and we are now at 59,845 acres burned and the Fire Fighters are at 55% containment.

The other major fire (Springer - Near Colorado Springs) is at 1,145 acres burned.  150 homes there have been evacuated but so far so good for them.  They are reporting 23% containment

Larry, sounds like you are hitting pay dirt on your family's history.  WTG!  I have tried several times to trace my family's history, but so far, haven't gotten too far.  One of these days, I'll try again.

My father decided to start tracing his and my mother's families roots a couple years ago.  What started as a page or two of notes has transpired into two 3" three ring binders of labelled pictures, birth & death records, census records and other data as he finds it.  Fascinating process.  I'm glad he did it (and is still working on it) as he was the last one who knew who many of the faces in photographs were.

H/H/H today so I'm hiding in the shade and/or A/C when I can.  I do have to be outside but that'll be early and late today.  I have to get our garage ready for Aedan's birthday party in a couple weeks.  I can't believe he's gonna be 3 already.

Good Wednesday morning everyone.  Clear skies this a.m., with temps around 74 degrees here in Louisville.  Going to get up to 94 degrees this afternoon.  According to Ms. Weather, the only chance for any rain today, will be in Eastern Ky.  That's too far away for us to see any relief from this heat.  When I take my walk later this morning, will definitely be carrying a bottle of cold water with me (have it in the fridge, getting colder and colder, as its been in there for 2 days, getting nice and cold!).

Larry, sounds like you are hitting pay dirt on your family's history.  WTG!  I have tried several times to trace my family's history, but so far, haven't gotten too far.  One of these days, I'll try again.

Coffee, juice, Gatorade, lemonade, iced tea ( sweet & non sweet), fruit punch, Kool Aid, are all fresh and ready to go.  On the breakfast bar this morning:  omelettes, bacon, sausage, toast, biscuits & gravy and hash browns.

Everyone have a good morning, take care, keep as cool as possible and see you all later.

BC - Hope all goes as desired.

Got into the ol' genealogy tonight.  After doing a little digging in the on-line program, I decided to see if I could figure out where the family business was in Detroit back in the day.  They ran a coal yard - two actually.

Lo and behold, I located an on-line copy of a 1928 Detroit business directory (courtesy of UofM) which not only had listings for the coal yards, but for the family residence as well.  Jackpot!

My uncle had confused me a bit - he said they lived on "Buick."  Or so I thought.  Turns out they lived on "Bewick."  Apparently both are pronounced the same way.

According to Acme Mapper, the site of the house is now an empty lot.  The closer of the two coal yards to the house must have been repurposed years ago.

Pretty cool stuff!

Thought I would stop in for a coffee. It is still a bit early to think about supper.

61° and partly cloudy today. It has been like this for a while now, and it is forecast to be like this for a while longer. Not too hot, not too cold, not too wet, and not too dry. You could call it Goldilocks weather, and I don't like it. Give me 15 more degrees, with sunny skies, and I would be happy.

Not too much else to report at the moment.

Hope everyone is well.

Did I hear Mookie and chocolate?  ^~^

I am really glistening today!

We have a 70% chance of rain tomorrow and cooler temps.  Wonder who will get our rain?  82 isn't exactly sweater weather, but after 97 right now - it will do.  Problem will be - 82 temps and 92 humidity.

But it is summer, don't have to shovel it and don't have to try and drive in a mess!

It is wonderful!!!!!Cool

Well, Produce went pretty good this morning:  no pushing, no breaking in line when I called the names out, no arguing, etc.  The produce delivery this morning:  romaine lettuce, orange juice (1/2 pint containers), onions and zuchinni squash.  We were definitely surprised that they had no potatoes today.  And when the Bread/Pastry truck came, we actually gone some sweets today, mostly bags of powdered doughnuts, and the assortment packs of doughnuts (yes, Mookie, the assortment does contain chocolate doughnuts).

Barry, hope everything goes well for you tomorrow, when you go back to dr/hospital.  Just take care of yourself, okay?

Our Tuesday Mexican Fiesta , Round 1 is now on the warmer bar:

Tacos (hard and soft shell)

Burritos (beef, beef & bean, and beef enchilada style)

Chimichangas

Fajitas

Mesquite grilled rib eye steaks and bone-in pork chops

Spanish rice

Shredded lettuce w/diced tomatoes (onion on the side for anyone wanting onion)

And our usual tortilla chips w/your choice of salsa, con queso or picante sauce (all available in mild, medium and hot)

I haven't heard what our current temp is, but believe me, it is very, very, very warm (as in h-0-t, including what little breeze is blowing around.

Everyone enjoy your afternoon, keep as cool as possible, keep hydrated and take care.

Good Morning Railfans!

Well we broke the record high yesterday as we reach 100F which is way above normal for June.  Forecast has us continuing to be HOT and have RED FLAG Warnings up for most of the state.

FIRE NEWS:

The beast to my north is at 58,770 acres and sadly another 8 homes were destroyed yesterday.  Containment has reach 50%.  1,700 Fire Fighters on the ground

The other major fire to my south is near 1,000 acres burned.  There are now 250 Fire Fighters on the ground there and more coming.

Good Tuesday morning all.  77 very muggy degrees here in Louisville this morning, with no rain in sight, until probably Thursday night.  The lady weather reporter said definitely no rain in sight for today, not even the little popups.

Coffee, juices, iced tea, hot tea, cold Gatorade, lemonade, limeade, iced water, etc. are fresh and ready to go.  Cold milk is in the cooler & fridge and boxes of cereal are on the counter.  Bacon, sausage, eggs and toast are on the warmer bar.

Everyone have a good morning, and I'll see you all sometime this afternoon, after I get thru with Tuesday Produce and the Bread/Pastry trucks.  Hopefully, we'll move everything into the gym this morning, where it'll be cooler for us all.

And on the fire fighting tankers:  That would be some scene....watching a 747 equipped with tanks for fire fighting.....That must be quite a show when it drops it's load...!

...From a distance.  You don't want to be under it...

That the aircraft are called "tankers" has caused some dissention in the fire service.  Here in the east (and pretty much all the way across the country to the Rockies), we call a water supply truck a tanker.  Over on the left coast they call the same truck a "tender," and they expect us to do the same.

As all of us here know, a tender goes behind a steam locomotive...

Don't have to go out and water the posies this morning.  Ma Nature let me know she was doing it by letting go with a couple rumbles of thunder first thing.

Hi Cannonball:

Yes, we're moving forward with the recovery for Jean after the heart surgery.  We believe that has gone very well.

Just some other things that we've had to attend to, but we're working on them.

And on the fire fighting tankers:  That would be some scene....watching a 747 equipped with tanks for fire fighting.....That must be quite a show when it drops it's load...!

Here in central Indiana....we're into "hot"....and very dry.  Believe it will stay that way for a while too...

Back in about 1969....as we were approaching and at Las Vegas via air....I noted a 747 doing very different kinds of take off modes from McCarren field.  That was some show...!  The 747 was just coming on then.

Forecast here is for really hot right through the beginning of summer (7:09PM EDT Wednesday), then cooling off a bit by the weekend.

Finished planting the bedding plants in the front of the house.  Was going to water them tonight (there's rain forecast, but the best way to make it rain is to plan on it not doing so), but got toned out for an EMS call.  I'll catch them in the AM.

I put in two flats of petunias and a full flat of pansies.  Should be pretty if they take hold.

Almost time for bed.
