Hello all! Justin here.

Just wanted to poke my head in here and check in. Have been railfanning quite heavily lately, and haven't had time to stop in! I can post a link to my flickr account if you want so you can view my photos.

Have a safe day all!

Cannonball....

I believe I recently did see that DC 10 {or one of them}, and my quick look at it, it seemed a bit different.  The horizonal parts of the tail structure seemed to be constructed in a "V" shape...

I wonder If I actually did see what I thought was a DC 10, and if so, whether it might have been modified for fire fighting duty......?

I don't remember the passenger version having a tail structure like that, but then, it's been a while since I've seen one of those in passenger service.

Embarrassed    Darren,  well the powers that be have sent the big DC-10 fire bomber to Mesa Az. instead . There is a 1000acre fire going in Young Az. However  NO railroads or  trains  have been damaged here yet.    The fire in Crown King is history. The firemen have saved the  long closed railroad ROW  in the fire line. ~~~ now the big threat is  from floods  if it ever rains here in this high desert.  One calimity after another. Has any one got some good news???

Good Friday morning all.  Beautiful morning, sun's shining, humidity is still low, and won't feel too bad when we reach 90 degrees this afternoon.

Darren, will continue to keep all the firefighters in my thoughts and prayers, as they continue the good fight.  They may only have 15 to 20% containment now, but, hey, that's better than 0 containment.

Coffee, juices and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go:  everyone from hot tea (or iced tea) to Gatorade.  On the serving station this morning:  bacon, eggs, toast, doughnuts, danish, muffins, bagels and bear claws.

Still working on my VBS pictures.  Got them downloaded, but taking me some time to run them through Picasa (I've never used Picasa before), before printing them out.

Everyone have a beautiful, blessed morning, take care and see you all this afternoon.

Evening Railfans...

FIRE NEWS:  The monster is now over 52,000 acres and at least 118 structures lost.  The crews were able to get a 15-20% containment but the fire crowned over the top of HWY 14 and the Poudre River so tonight the evacuation of 80 more homes had to be order  as the fire tonight is racing up a gulch towards the Glacier View Meadows neighborhood..  This is on the northern front.  There are now 1,300 Fire Fights on the lines.

Happy Birthday to everyone.

It is a better day here than the guessers were calling for, fingers crossed. 61° and partly cloudy now. Yesterday's weather didn't seem to cause any newsworthy disruptions to local RR operations.

I happened to get down by the Bow River yesterday. It is high and really full of silt and debris, but the person I was with said it was actually down a bit. We will just have to hope our luck holds out.

Darren, an amazing video!  Kind of  makes me want to go through our videos, and find the movie, Always, with Holly Hunter, John Goodman, and  Richard Dreyfus, on the forest firefighters.

Not sure what our current temp is, but I did manage to get my walk in this morning.  Kind of cheated on the way back home, though:  found a bus ticket, so waited a couple of minutes for the wb Oak St. bus, and hopped on it.  Made it home by 12:20.

Happy Birthday wishes going out to:  Mat Kohnen and to Sarah Warner!!  Hope both of you have a fantastic day, and may all your wishes come true, both of you! Happy B-Day Happy B-Day Happy B-Day Happy B-Day Happy B-Day Happy B-DayCakeCakeAnd,

For our lunch/dinner and dinner/supper today, here is our menu:

1.  Cold cut sandwiches with garden salad and your choice of fries or potato chips

2.  And, one of Sarah's favorite dishes:  chicken & dumplings

Desserts:

1.  Chocolate birthday cake w/chocolate icing

2.  Yellow birthday cake w/white icing

Plenty of ice cream to go with the birthday cakes, too!!

Everyone have a great afternoon, take care, keep cool and see you all later.

Good Morning Railfans!

It's 59F heading up into the high 80's today with the potential for thunderstorms heading back into the area in the next couple of days.  Rain YES, Lightning / Winds NO!

FIRE NEWS:  As of yesterday there are now 1,000 Fire Fighters on the lines with most making their heroic stand on the eastern edge to save as many homes as they can and keep this beast from getting into the city itself.  They have gotten a 10% containment in the NE corner where this fire has burned up into an old fire so they caught a break where they can start and hold a line along the eastern edge.  The North, West, and South edges are burning out of control.

Here is another video that has taken by folks that live in the area...

Good Thursday morning everyone.   It's a little bit cool and breezy outside this morning, with a temp of 61 degrees.  Sun is shining, and we're to get up to about 86 degrees for a high this afternoon.  Less humid, though, so we should have a pretty good day for outdoor activities.

Coffee, juices and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go.  And breakfast of bacon, eggs, toast, chunks of pineapple, cantaloupe, watermelon, and other melons, kiwi and papaya are on the serving station.

Everyone take care, have a good day, & see you all later.

Evening folks. CW, the Grilled Chicken sounds good, followed by the Death by Chocolate Ice Cream.

Kind of a poor day here weather wise. Off and on heavy rain and thundershowers. The thundershowers created a problem at the airport which was a new one to me. There were continuous waves of thunderheads rolling through and while not all were creating showers, there was extensive lightning. They closed the airport for much of the day because they didn't want the ground crews outside working on the planes during the lightning strikes. I hadn't heard of that problem before. They called it a Red Flag closure, I think.

This problem wasn't going to be cleared up until tomorrow so many passengers tried to book hotel rooms overnight, which was proving to be impossible as The Calgary International Petroleum Show is here for the week. Which reminded me of a funny story from back in the '70's.

Passes are handed out to anyone with a pulse who is employed in the oil business, so they get the chance to go down there and be bombarded by salesmen of every description. Me, and another fellow in the department I happened to be talking to at the moment, were each handed a pass on the first day of the event. So we said what the heck, we will meet up there after supper. This show is in a huge indoor venue with many booths from many companies and outside the building is a huge area with multi-millions of dollars of petroleum extraction equipment.

We got down there and said to heck with the indoor displays, let's just look at all the machinery. An excellent time was had by all, as they say, and we told one of the bosses about it the next day. She (a rarity at that time, in that industry) said, "Wait a minute, for you guys, looking at that machinery is like anybody else going down to see a car show! That doesn't count as work, that was entertainment!"

I don't know who said what to who, but later in the week another boss brought me another pass and said I should go back down that afternoon and look at the indoor displays, in particular, sellers of office equipment. So, with my suit on, I went back down and checked things out. In the end, one of those vendors did get his money's worth for paying for that pass, as the company did end up coming back to see us, and make a sale.

I don't think I will ever see a mention of that show without thinking of that boss's quote.

Fortunately, this new rain didn't create any local RR news.

Good Wednesday morning all.  Beautiful day, with plenty of sunshine, and hardly any chance of any rain for the rest of the week.  May have a slight chance of a stray pop up, but that's about it.  Current temp is in the low 60s, with a slight, cool breeze.  Supposed to get up to about 80, 81 degrees later this afternoon.

Randy, even though I've not been in the 'able to hire people' position, I feel for you.  When I worked at KMart, we were always told, that if someone asked about  filling out an application, we could get them an app to fill out, but also tell them that we weren't hiring at that time.  Most of the people would go ahead and fill one out and turn it back in, just on the off chance of a position opening up.  The rest would make a snide comment or few, curse us out, then walk out the door in a huff.

Coffee, juices and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go.  Breakfast is on the serving station.

Everyone have a good morning, take care and if anyone has anything they'd like to see on the menu today, just let me know.

One of these days I'll figure out how my mother decided I liked strawberry rhubarb pie.  I must have been being polite.

Pinapple upside down cake, on the other hand, I'll take.

Bumps and rumbles here.  Came out of a meeting to discover oncoming black clouds, so drove over to the shores of the St Lawrence to watch it come in.  Measured a 36.1 MPH gust before the heavy rain arrived.  Home now, with some continuing bumps and rumbles, but it looks like it'll subside soon.

Headed to Turning Stone casino tomorrow for the first day of the NYS Fire Chiefs expo.  All seminars tomorrow.  The displays and vendors open up on Thursday.  I'll have to watch my pocketbook.  It's just all too tempting...

Here is our Tuesday Mexican Fiesta menu for tonight:

1.  Tacos (build your own:  we have the newer flat bottom taco shells, where you can put your taco seasoned meat in, and add whatever other ingredients you wish to have):  lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, onion, etc.

2.  Burritos:  beef, beef & bean and beef enchilada style

3.  Spanish rice

4.  Chimichangas

5.  Fajitatas

6.  Mesquite grilled steaks and pork chops

Plus, we have the usual tortilla chips w/your choice of salsa, picante sauce or con queso dips.

For Dessert:

1.  rhubarb pie

2.  strawberry/rhubarb cobbler

3.  pineapple upside down cake

And we also have plenty of ice cream (whatever flavor you want) to go on of to the side of any of the above listed desserts.

I and the other people I worked with last week at our VBS are so glad we had ours last week, and have it over with.  This week, the Baptist Church across the street from our house, has theirs going on, from 6 until 8:30.  I've been procrastinating downloading all the pictures I took last week.  Need to get my fanny in gear, and get them downloaded, and then print them out, so the Church Warden can have them to put into the Church's scrapbook/photo album.

Everyone have a good evening, take care, and Joe, hopefully, you all will get some much needed gentle rainfall up in Northwest Ohio soon.  I also think they could use some gentle rainfall out in Denver and New Mexico, to help put out the wildfires.  No thunder and lightning, to exasperate their current situations.

Pineapple upsidedown cake! Yumm!Thumbs UpThumbs Up The mention reminds me of one night my freshman year at college. A little background: six or seven of us regularly sat at one of the two tables waited by a particular student, who made sure we had enough to eat; after I had finished my small dish of dessert, she would often bring me a soup bowl full of it. One night, when pineapple upsidedown cake was the dessert, for some reason, I was full by the time the bowl arrived; I was not going to let it go to waste, so I did something that no one was supposed to do (unless it was taking a meal to a student who was unable to get to the dining hall)--I took the bowlful to my room, and finished it later (and sneaked the empty bowl back into the dining hall). One night after supper, this waitress asked me if my father had been a millionaire. I confess I did eat a lot, but I did not gain weight; working on the Building & Ground Crew 12 hours a week (@ $.60 an hour) did wonders in rearranging my weight.

Still chilly nights and warm days here--and no rain for two weeks.

Whistling Darren,  here in the mtns.  ( Yavipai co.)  we just got our fire almost out finally in Crown King. Mop up crews  are working now.  So now fire crews are moving on to another fire. maybe in your area?  I saw where a DC 10 fire bomber has been called out. That bomber can drop retardant a path  100 yrds wide for a mile.  If it comes there it will be at  Denver Intntl.   A fire that big  would  need a lot of resources , plus  planes from Canada  ( 2).   Hoping you folks won't be in harms way.

                                                       Respectfully, Cannonball

You are very welcome, Mookie!!  Almost wish I had taken a few slices of pineapple upside down cake over to Produce with me this morning:  I'd have crammed them into several mouths, whose 'owners' decided to take over and run things this morning (before the lady in charge arrived, I might add).  One idiot told me to start calling names, and we didn't have enough bags made up, for me to even  think about starting to call people up.  I was being kept busy, just signing people in:  by the time we finished, we had served 75 or 76 people this morning.  Haven't had that kind of number in a long while.

Have set out some cold cuts and other sandwich fixings on the 'cooler' bar for lunch.  Will be back in later, to start our Mexican Fiesta.  Take care, everyone, and enjoy your afternoon.

Good Morning Railfans!

It's 58F and clear heading up to the low 80's.

FIRE NEWS:  Sadly this thing is still growing; now over 41,000 acres and sadly 1 death is now reported - Linda Steadman, 62, died in the blaze / She lived at 9123 Old Flowers Road.  I have not seen the updated map get posted yet but I have heard from folks at CSU say they can see the flames now from within Ft. Collins itself now so it's closing in on the western edge of the city.  I believe this is now officially the the 3rd largest fire in Colorado history...

Here is a different map from yesterday that shows how close it is getting to Ft. Collins now

Good Tuesday morning all.  70 degrees here in Louisville this morning, with patchy fog.  Supposed to get to about 85 degrees today, with a cold front moving in.  High tomorrow is to only be 81 degrees.  But 90 for highs on Saturday and Sunday.

Johnny, you're very welcome.  Whenever you all tell me there is something you'd like to have in here, I try to get it right away for you all.  Glad you all enjoyed the pie.

Tom, sorry to hear that you and wife are under the weather.  Hope you both are feeling better very soon.

Bruce, my Mama and Daddy grew rhubarb on our farm, along with my preferred fruits.  I never could acquire a taste for it, though.  But I'll fix it in here for all of you to enjoy.

Mookie, baking some pineapple upside down cakes right now.  They'll be ready and cooling by the time I head over for Tuesday Produce at 8 a.m.

Coffee, juices and other morning beverages are fresh  and ready to go.  Breakfast is on the warmer bar.

Everyone have a good morning, take care and see you all this afternoon.

Peace be with you. Well, our Thunderchickens did it again and advanced to the College World Series for the third year in a row. The last two years, they went and won the thing!! Lessee what happens this time.

We had an all day rain event and allegedly got 1.37 inches.  The next two days are supposedly repeats of today, so the rain deficit should be closing.

The wife and I are still under the weather. She spent most of the day in bed, and has done so for the past two or three weeks Seems we only get out to see the doctor or chiropractor.

A new goal on the wireless: I am trying to talk to and confirm contacts in each county in the U S. So far, I have app 620 of the app 3700 so far! That looks like a long term project!!

Everyone take care and stay safe.

Thanks for the rhubarb pie, Paula. It is a refreshing dessert, indeed.

We are gradually moving into warm days, but the nights are still in the fifties. Maybe real lae spring will be here by the first day of summer.

Evening everyone. I am back for some Rhubarb Pie.

This talk of rhubarb reminded me of a strange book about gardening and railway stations in western Canada called "Forgotten Gardens, Abandoned Landscapes & Remarkable Restorations", by Shirley Harris. I was hooked when I read a back cover quote that said in part  "a few evergreens, a disheveled hedge of caraganas and lilacs and a mystery as to why they exist in these peculiar spots". I immediately added rhubarb plants, and I knew exactly what the author was talking about.

Drive along any rural road in the prairie provinces that parallels an existing or abandoned RR ROW, and you will see these spots which were former station sites or Section Men's house yards. You needed to be sure where you wanted to plant caraganas, lilacs and rhubarb, because about the only way to kill them off when you are done with them is by using some sort of thermo-nuclear device!

I spoke with one woman who lives in a bedroom community east of Calgary who told me that the locals are catching on to where long abandoned farmhouses once stood, and they are now going out and getting fresh rhubarb there. I like looking at places like that as you can really let your imagination go.

The book is definitely more of a gardening book than a railway history book, but I still liked it. Ladies and gentlemen, enjoy your pie.

.....Spokyone:

We have a similar situation here in Muncie.  It's a Caddy with the big fins, sticking out of a business place wall facing a 4 lane business street here.  Just from the rear window back.  Believe it's about a 1959.  Maybe a '60.
