Still cold (low twenties to mid-forties) and dry here. I do not recall the numbers for our area, but the precipitation for the current water year is below normal; I trust I will be able to get clean next summer (at the expense of the grass if necessary).

I am sure most of you have seen, in the national news, the horror story that took place in Washington state Sunday. Somehow, I have missed any TV national news of the event in which a man killed himself and his two young sons. He had sent a email to someone saying that he could not live without them, and when a social worker brought them to him for a supervised visit he pulled them into the house, kept the worker out, and set fire to the house.

He, his wife, and two sons had lived in this area until his wife vanished, without trace, a little over two years ago. It was thought this past summer that there were two leads as to where her body could be, but nothing was found. It was learned that both his father and he had unhealthy appetites concerning sexual matters, and the boys were living with their maternal grandparents.

Someone who knew the family has commented that he thought of the boys not so much as sons but as personal possessions, which can give some understanding (but no excuse)--"if I can't have my boys, no one else can."

Our local police chief has said that the matter of the missing wife is not closed.

It is a sad story.

Quentin: If RGS's work goose #6 and other geese couldn't move it, then they either borrowed some "heft" from D&RGW (at Silverton or Ouray)or called it quits for 4 months. (Usually the latter, January to May)....

(What? The old Buick 6 or the later 216CID/234CID motors couldn't get the Roadmaster's Work Goose to tackle moderate amounts of snow? usually powder...That rascal has an inordinant amount of steel in the bed as additional ballast.)

M C.....I was wondering how much weight that old rig might have had tagged on to it....That's why I wondered about the traction.

And.....A Buick 6....Wow.  That goes back a ways.  And the 216 cid  /  235 cid engines sound like Chevy engines....Right c i.

Well - don't get on the computer all day, and see what I missed?  A belated Happy Anniversary to the happy couple!

Picked up "Sim City Societies" the other day for the computer.  We had the orginal "Sim City" some time back, and it can be addicting.  This version was, too, until the computer locked up.  Apparently the game and something running on the computer don't get along, as the video card was giving me some problems even if the program wasn't running.  So it's getting uninstalled as we speak.

Possible snow near the weekend - which figures, as we're planning a work detail at the RR shop this Saturday.  If anybody wants to help strip the paint of an RS81u, let me know...

Good Wednesday morning everyone.  Temp is 32, 33 degrees, and had snow earlier, but it has gone now.  Streets are just wet, The only slick spots are bridges and overpasses, of course.  But they're not too bad. according to the reports I've heard this morning.

Coffee, juices and all the other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go.  Breakfast is on the warmer bar.

Everyone have a good day, enjoy it, take care and see you all this afternoon.

Sunshine in my east window of our home office here.  But overnight, a dusting of snow....I'm going to call it one half inch, but probably not quite.  Anyway, it is a bit above freezing, and with the sunshine out....doubt, if we'll see any more now.

Friday, may produce a bit more, but that doesn't seem like much coming this way either.

I will add one half inch here to my unofficial snowfall recording for the season.  That would put it, for a total now;  11"   Way down compared to the last few years.

And the heating degree days...Awesome.  Much lower than "normal", and even last year....Haven't figured it, but I'd say 20% {at least}, below....Meaning warmer amb.

.....Sure appears to be a former depot....and now a possible library.

Sure don't like to see depot's without tracks.  But better to at least have the building and see it still there in decent shape, and being used.

Well, since it is a cold, dreary day, how does this sound, for our meal, for the rest of the afternoon and tonight?

1.  Vegetable beef soup w/baked cornbread

2.  Chili (mild and medium hot) w/your choice of saltines or oyster crackers

3.  Walt's grandmother's Italian spaghetti casserole w/garden salad and your choice of garlic Texas toast or Italian breadsticks

Managed to renew my library books online, so all I have to do later is take a quick trip up to the grocery/pharmacy and pick up my meds for the rest of the month.

Everyone have a good afternoon, keep warm and toasty, and see you all later.

We have a WINNER!!!!!!! Geeked

Yes, that is the old Denver, Utah and Pacific (DUP) Depot in Lyons, CO and now the local Library.  It's made of the same sandstone that the railroad was hauling out.

Vegetable beef soup will hit the spot today.. Aledo JR high girls had an away game in Knoxville last night. The bus driver decided to go though downtown Galesburg on the way. A train blocked the grade crossing for a long time. One of the girls had a GPS and told the driver how to get to an underpass. Sad, but the girls didn't get a chance to warm up before the game, then lost.

Pasta - yessss......soup tomorrow after it has rested a day in fridge!  Dinner

Johnny - that story shocked even the Driver - and he doesn't shock easily.  How sad.

Joe - hang onto them until late next week- too darn cold to go watch.  I heard the motors pulling going south - probably to warmer weather?

Tree - your neighborhood south of you looks mighty blue.  When it is hot in the summer, why doesn't it turn pink or red?

I think I pulled a muscle in mah brain on that one - must go rest......

Mookie, since the family lived here, there is something in the paper or on the local news everyday. With things I had to do, I knew nothing of it until I began reading the morning paper Monday, and the news was, of course, the main item on the front page. I was horrified to read of the destruction of life by a man who, apparently, thought only of himself.

The man was the only "person of interest" in the matter of the disappearance of his wife. He claimed to know nothing of how or why she had disappeared, but found her gone after taking the boys camping on a cold December night. I do not know how the police here can now pursue the matter of her disappearance.

Good Thursday morning everyone.  Temps about the same range as yesterday morning, in the low 30s, supposed to get up in the low 40s this afternoon.

Mookie, think I have to agree with you:  Mom probably went camping with them, and while the boys were sleeping, he killed her, and disposed of her body somewhere.  Wonder if that's why he killed himself and his sons:  to keep them from talking about what they knew.

Coffee, juices and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go.  Breakfast is on the warmer bar.

Everyone have a good morning, take care, and see you all later.

Occasionally, it does, but we'd really prefer that it not stay that way for an extended period.  Especially not the pink/purple stuff...

Good Morning Railfans!

It's a bit warmer today (24F) but cold air is heading back in this weekend with another chance of some white stuff.  The ice ruts on the side streets can be allot of fun even with a 4x4 and it looks like they might still be with us for awhile.  Still working on uploading my model RR inventory roster shots to my new modeling blog.

Right now it's all about "I Love NY" DHNY Boxcars like this real one...

Paula, this is possible, but I do not recall ever seeing this thought posited by anyone here.  It is certainly seem odd that the boys did not say anything such as, "Mom went with us, but did not come back home with us." Now, I do recall seeing, or hearing in the last few days, something to the effect that the boys may have known something that they had not spoken of.

Today is Ricki's 83rd birthday, and daughter Ginny plans some kind of celebration for her at the nursing facilty. Three years ago, Ginny and daughter Katie arranged a quite successful surprise luncheon for her at our church (I did not breath a word of it to Ricki, but Katie did give her an invitation to lunch after church for that day).

Johnny, please tell Ricki "Happy Birthday" for me!!  Hope she's having a very good day.  How is she doing?  Better each day, hopefully.

Our meal for the rest of the afternoon/evening:

1.  Leftover vegetable beef soup w/baked cornbread

2.  Chilli (mild and medium hot) w/choice of saltines or oyster crackers

3.  Leftover Italian spaghetti casserole

4.  Oyster Stew

Going to do my best to make it in early tomorrow morning:  have to be ready to head out the door by 8:31, to go to the hospital for the abdominal aortic ultrasound.  Everyone enjoy your evening, take care and see you all later.

WOW, lots of good stuff happening in the Cafe and on the site overall.

I would like to wish a belated Happy anniversary to Paula and Walt.

I have really liked the two Depot pictures posted yesterday. First, the one of the Lyons, CO depot posted in the Cafe. It kind of makes me think of what a Grand Trunk Pacific (CN predecessor) depot would look like if they had built single story variants. Is that structure with the larger windows in the back left of the photo part of the depot? If so, was it a dwelling for an Agent?

Second, the Photo of the Day of the Niles, MI depot. That is just beautiful. And both buildings have three window bays for the Operators. As I have mentioned before, I like to look for the Operators office, no matter how large the Station. And only the newest examples don't seem to have one.

A bit cooler here today, 27° with a windchill of 21°. They are calling for snow flurries early tomorrow.

Good Friday morning everyone.  Cloudy, temp around 33 degrees, and cold here in Louisville.  Think our temps will hover in the low to mid 30s most of the day today.  Snow showers/flurries will be in mid day to early afternoon (according to weatherman).  But no 'heavier' snow showers until 6 p.m or later tonight.  Not supposed to see more than 1/2 in to 1 in. accumulation, though.

Coffee, juices and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go.  On the warmer bar this morning:

1.  Doughnuts (including the chocolate covered, cream filled long johns, which happens to be my all time favorite)

2.  Danish

3.  Muffins (assorted flavors)

4.  Reg. breakfast of bacon, eggs, toast, oatmeal, or bacon/sausage, biscuits & gravy

Gang, count yourselves lucky, that you can have something to eat and drink this morning:  I can't have anything at all this morning, and I'm really, really wanting something to drink!!Think I'll put a Diet Dr. Pepper in my bag to take with me, so when they get through with me, I cant quench my thirst.  The worst phrase anyone can hear is "Nothing to eat or drink after midnight!"

Everyone take care, have a good morning, and see you all sometime this afternoon.

Good Morning Railfans!

It's 19F and Sunny here at 5280+ and they still say we will see some snow on Saturday.  Things at least melted enough yesterday that when I got home I was able to break away part of the road ruts in front of the house.

.....Now that's a neat mini train.  Body is really realistic looking.  Can't tell the gauge...maybe 18" or 2'.

Here in Muncie now....Very light snow.  Possible 1 to 2" today.  We seem to be on the southern edge of the weather system bringing in some of the white stuff and moving east.  Temp right no: 32.7

If it really doesn't do more than that, no problem.  Much colder for the weekend, but some sunshine.

I'm baaaack.  Guess everything went o.k. this morning.  I was back home right around noon.  Put a pot of coffee on, and fixed me something to eat.  Then took a 2 hour nap.  Don't really expect to hear anything, until I go back to the cardivascular dr. on 3/2/12.  At least,  I hope I don't hear anything before then.

Our Friday Fish Fry, with all the different kinds of fish, and all the side dishes are ready and waiting on the warmer bar.  Dessert menu is the usual cakes, pies and cobblers.

Staying inside, where it is nice and toasty warm.  The wind seems to practically cut you into (at least that's how I felt) this morning, and early afternoon.

Everyone take care,  enjoy your evening and see you all later.

...Slightly above freezing, and we're getting that possibly up to 2" or so of snow.  Weather people say it will be, for the most part, by us around 9 pm...Flurries overnight.

Colder tomorrow...and maybe some sunshine.

Must run, ball game coming on...Pacer's {our team}, vs Memphis.

And did not get to see the video from Darren yet, but certainly will a bit later.
