Yes, Historirc Aerials is quite useful, but it is not my primary research tool.  No good reason come to mind now, but I tend to stick with what I started with (Google Earth).  Originally, I was only listing those that were visible on G.E. but after I published my list the snowball started rolling and I have used several other sources as well.

Others have used Historic Aerials to suggest additions to my lists and I have a few in my list that are marked as visible on it... those primarily are the ones that are not also visible on Google Earth.

I am still somewhat amazed that there were/are so many.

MN, Currie, TT and Engine house, EndOLine RR Park and Museum 44.07527084 N 95.66551415 W

Added... is this a museum?  I see a steam loco, but the track is really short and goes nowhere!

-       I think it’s a museum… http://www.endoline.com/

MO, Chillicothe, RH and TT foundations 2012 39.79170137 N 93.54118923 W

This one really bothers me.  The earlier images show nothing... even show the area as having been plowed and smoothed, yet the 2012 image shows a vague outline and radial pattern.  But the radial pattern is not as round as it should be, nor do all the radials point at the center.  I need more "proof"... anybody else have an opinion?  I will concede to the majority!

-        I agree. They are not as round as they should be.

NE, Mitchell, Transfer Table  41.93288279 N 103.8828472 W

Added... but where did you get the name Mitchell?

-       It could be Mitchel, it could be Morrill, it could be something else. I just picked the first item I saw near it with info, which was Mitchell Valley farm in Mitchell, NE.

NY, Bronx, TT foundation 1995 40.80766651 N 73.89860109 W

Listed as "Barretto Cove, NY"... I don't know why!

-        I think that’s the name of the neighborhood in the Bronx. https://www.google.com/maps/place/Barretto+Cove/@40.8010821,-73.8858642,16z/data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x89c2f50c78d3e955:0xe7de37bf2ec21d02

OH, Akron, RH foundation 41.08619418 N 81.48825989 W

Added, but I see no evidence of a TT... may have just been a switched fan of tracks to an engine house.

-       Agreed. It looks to be only 3-4 stalls.

OH, Flushing, RH foundation 1994 40.15652984 N 81.11781532 W

Listed as “Holloway, OH”… where’d you get Flushing.

-        If you go to Google Maps and drop the street views guy onto the road in front of the location, the address comes up as Flushing, OH, which is off to the west a bit. I agree that Holloway, OH is closer…. And, of course, google maps is never, ever incorrect! hahahaa

This is another unconfirmed TT or oil tank. Anyone know?

Unrelated, but interesting, look at the tracks to the south and north of this location over many years with the slider. Someone is scrapping out hundreds of locos.

OH, McDonald, TT foundation 2005  41.17087956 N 80.73257138 W

Unconfirmed.  Telltale marks on the ground move around too much from year to year, in relation to the tracks and other things.

-       The circle isn’t moving around in relation to the other objects in the pictures. The registration of the pictures in Google Earth are off from year to year in that location. However, I agree that there’s still no proof it’s a turn table pit.

OH, Van Wert, RH and TT foundations 2012  40.87611951 N 84.58891016 W

Oopsies!  I had that in Indiana! (Sorry to insult the folk in both states!)

-       No insult taken. J

And THANK YOU for your work.

-       This isn’t work, it’s fun. You’re the one compiling everything. Thanks!

NY, Bronx, TT foundation 1995 40.80766651 N 73.89860109 W

Listed as "Barretto Cove, NY"... I don't know why!

...

Could be a TT or could be an oil tank. Not confirmed. Anyone got info on it?

NY, Long Island City, TT foundation 1994  40.75141925 N 73.92727646 W

Not confirmed.

...

What you call "Barretto Cove, NY" is called Oak Point on topo maps and SPV rail map.

For your Long Island City site (Sunnyside Yard) , if you look at topo map, you see a TT symbol.  Search for Long Island City on:

Zwingle added Barretto Cove, NY back on Sept 25, 2011 (page 4 of this thread).  Maybe he can chime in here and explain the name.  I did find a Barretto Point Park to the east... I suppose that the Point is the spit of land that forms the cove.

I have changed the name temporarily to "Barretto Cove/Oak Point, NY"

I then added "Long Island City, Queens, NY" as a TT pit only.

Thanks.  (MyTopo dot com is another good resource.)

Thanks.  While Sunnyside Yard is in the geographic area of Long Island City, there is a Long Island City station and yard a mile or two to the west.  It's where steam/deisel trains terminate(d) at a ferry slip across from Manhattan.  Not sure if they also had a TT at one time.

---------------------------------------
I will update the files and put them up later today.  I have spent too much of the morning getting bleary-eyed looking at Google Earth, between bouts of beating my rags on rocks down in the dungeon and poking the ol’ Dragon (AKA; I’m doing laundry!)… and I have two copies of my novel that I printed yesterday to bind as hardback books that I was planning on doing between batches of clothes.

These additions bring the total in the U.S. to over 1000 sites!

Thank you very much!

Files updated and posted... same URL links as before, but I'll repeat them here.

Note the Non-U.S. files have not changed this time.

Excel spreadsheet file (XML).  This contains all the data in 2 sheets in one file.  Click the tab at the bottom of the Excel window to select U.S. or non-U.S. data:

http://1stclass.mylargescale.com/sempervaporo/Trainsdotcom/Roundhouse%20and%20Turntables.xls

The Non-U.S. data is duplicated in two files.  One is a printable PDF text file: (no changes since the April 21, 2016 file.)

http://1stclass.mylargescale.com/sempervaporo/Trainsdotcom/Non%20US%20Roundhouses%20and%20Turntables.pdf

The other is a Google Earth KMZ file: (no changes since the April 21, 2016 file.)

vapor thanks for the websites to get google Ariel Data, besides RR I love maps problem is I would like to electronically save to edit w/labels can't get that done any suggestions used to got USGS maps galore saved/printed to make a collage endmrw0425161315

Are you saying you have paper maps and want to digitize them for distribution?  You just need a digitizer.  Either a flat-bed that you can put the maps on or a hand scanner.  They would both need to be big enough to handle the whole map at once or you will need to scan sections and either save the sections individually or use an image editing program to link them together.  Not a pleasant chore, but do-able.

Just be careful as to Copyrights.  It might be that you cannot distribute them without violating the Copyright, and posting them here would be a problem.  I believe you can post segments of them with proper attribution, but even that is "iffy".  USGS maps should be free to copy (I think your U.S. taxes paid for them so you should own them), but I am not sure of that.

Semper, Sloooooow down. No need for copyright panic. I have done this for a river here locally that is flood prone due to length. BUT at headwaters they have an annual whitewater canoe challenge event. My interest was in getting the whole river mapped. Did so w/topo prints taped together. As a collage it is neat to "study" this river head to toe so to speak.....RR study is now in front of me. Would like to do the same w/historical branch line now abandoned. NO publication, just fun looking like this TT/RH stuff I have done the same w/Sanborn maps of our city. What a pain in that when overlaying together of course my different sheets are not scale compatible edit and try to get it close then put it in the middle!. endmrw0425161531

Thanks so much! I posted those last ones late Friday night, but since I'm a new member, all of my posts can be delayed up to 24 business hours before being approved by the management. So that's why they didn't go up until early Monday.

I thought when I started doing this, I'd find a few here and there. I started with the NJI&I roundhouse in South Bend, Indiana, as I drive past it very often. I know a gentleman that worked for that RR and he told me the history of it. And I knew there were two roundhouses in Elkhart, Indiana and read about a tree planting program at the RH site. The trees are supposed to leach up the soil contamination in the area. Then I happened to be on Google Earth over Niles, MI and saw the roundhouse that's still there being reused as a company called Roundhouse Supply (go figure). Saw some more in Chicago area and I was hooked. Started pinning them in Google Earth. After I went through a few larger cities in the midwest, on a complete hunch, I'd look at the spot directly between the two large cities with roundhouses and zoom into the nearest town on RR tracks as close to the center point between the two towns and 9 out of 10 times, there'd be a roundhouse foundation right there. So it got to a point of halving the distance between each roundhouse location to find the rest of them. I probably had about 65% of the ones on your list when I started looking. What I didn't have were the ones that were long gone and paved over, or any resemblance of RR tracks live or dug up near them. That's what I gained from reading through this entire thread several months ago, until I came to the posts you made with your compiled lists. Then I cheated and went to the last post and read backwards until I found your latest list. That's the one that I downloaded and compared to the output of my KMZ file as a spreadsheet. By then I had 85% of them and that's about when I decided to sign up and share. Thanks for the fun!

Semper Vaporo - You are correct about the USGS maps; anything produced at Federal government expense is in the public domain, you can use it pretty much however you want.

WI, Wisconsin Dells, TT 43.64258307 N 89.79084991 W
Already listed as: ‘Lake Delton, WI”.

WI, Wisconsin Dells, TT and RH 43.64258307 N 89.79084991 W
?? Same as above.

There's two turntables at the Dells. There's one in front of the roundhouse at  43°38'33.28"N  89°47'28.71"W

Then look about 200' to the southeast. There appears to be a small scale turtable at  43°38'32.52"N  89°47'26.97"W

I think some of my coordinates got twisted a bit in Excel, sorry about that.

I read about this one somewhere.
VT, Woodstock, TT pit and RH site 43.62719228 N 72.50822179 W
Not added yet. Got any more info?

- I saw it for sale on Zillow, I believe. Here's a link to an article about the Woodstock RR.

http://www.thevermontstandard.com/2011/03/recalling-the-woodstock-railroad/

Its mentioned to be a 68' pit still visible behind the Windsor county jail. In google earth, there's a Windsor county sherrif office directly south of it. It talks about the engine shed still being visible with a water tower on the western end, and that's visible in google earth. No where in the article does in mention a roundhouse, though, so it appears it is just a turntable and engine shed.

Okay... I have added a 2nd TT at the Delton Lake/Wisconsin Dells, WI area.  I still have them listed as in "Delton Lake/Wisconsin Dells, WI"  Note that both of these are on a 1/2 scale RR.

I also added the Woodstock, VT turntable pit.  Your reference material is sufficient for me, since the wall visible on G.E. measures out to really close to 68' like is stated in the reference material.

Thanks for both...   And, yes this is still FUN!  I am having trouble getting my books printed and bound for wandering around on Google Earth following RRs!

I will wait a while before I update the files on-line... just in case more come to light due to this recent flurry of activity of the forum thread.  (I'll set an alarm on my computer to remind me to do it in a week or so.)
