Do you folks down there have a long weekend this weekend? I saw a funny story on the news last night where it said that in the 10 Provinces there were 7 different names for our holiday. In Alberta we call it Heritage Day.

Bruce

Many folks in Utah had a three day weekend this past weekend, celebrating the arrival of the main body of emigrants (sic) on 24 July 1847. Since it is a state holiday, banks and liquor stores were closed on Monday, and the transit system operated on reduced schedules. If a postal worker wants to take the day, he may, in general, mail is delivered the same as onother days (Monday-Saturday).

All through July, there are many events, but the main event is the Days of 47 Parade which was on Monday this year. Ricki watched the parade in the comfort of our living room; I did other things.

We have had warm weather (into the nineties during the day and down into the sixties at night) with some rain, and expect the same to continue for a week at least.

Mook:  The truck that broke had 850,000 on the meter, this one has 750,000.  This one is not much better, is lacking in the power department.  Luckily, it is flat ground all the way to Buffalo from Wisconsin....

Had an interesting load the other day, apparently, Menard's (a home improvement chain here in the Midwest) just bought the old conveyor system from a Kohl's distribution center, and we got the nod to haul it from Virginia to a Menard's DC in Ohio.

See everyone later.....

Good Sunday morning everyone.  76 degrees here in Louisville this morning.  Going for a high of 94 degrees.

Well, our mother cat and her two kittens are back with us.  Got a few more pictures of them, but haven't downloaded them yet.  And I still need to do some editing on the pics from the baseball game Friday night.  Was just too tired yesterday to do anything to them.

Coffee, juices and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go.  On the serving station this morning:  sausage/egg biscuits, bacon, and biscuits w/milk gravy.

Everyone have a good morning, be safe and careful going out to Church, work, railfanning or whatever else you have to do this morning.

Went out last night for the first time in 6 months and got barbecue. A buddy gave me a ride and I had a thoroughly enjoyable time. I so look forward to the day that the quacks will turn me loose to drive....

Everyone take care, stay safe and cool.

Must have been half asleep this morning, as I forgot to wish someone a Happy B-Day!  So, here goes:  Rj, HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!Happy B-Day Happy B-Day Happy B-Day Happy B-Day  Hope you are enjoying it, and will have many happy returns.

To help Rj celebrate his birthday, I've been grilling most over the past couple of hours:  Steaks, hot dogs, brats, chicken, pork chops, corn on the cob; we also have all the regular side dishes.

And for dessert, there is plenty of ice cream:  vanilla, chocolate, neopolitan, peach, strawberry, cookies and cream.

Tom, I'm glad you were able to get out; I did not realize that you had been out of circulation so long.

You reminded me of a friend of mine, who at the age of eighty-six or thereabouts had some trouble with his heart and was told not to drive. I do not remember just how long he had to rely on someone else (his wife did not drive), but he became tired of waiting for his doctor to allow him to drive and drove himself to the doctor's office to ask how much longer he would have to wait. He lived close to fifteen years more.

he became tired of waiting for his doctor to allow him to drive and drove himself to the doctor's office to ask how much longer he would have to wait. He lived close to fifteen years more.

Which reminds me of a former CPR employee who had worked at Ogden shops. He was the oldest licensed driver in Alberta at either 100 or 101. At that age he had to take his license test yearly. He apparently did quite well until he became ill and died fairly suddenly, in just over a year after he last qualified for a license.

This story used to make the news every year at about the time my father retired(1985). Dad would get together with other oldtimers and they all thought it was interesting and amusing that this fellow had been retired for so long that there was nobody around who remembered working with him! You pensioned off in those days at 65, so it was around 35 years since he had worked. He had been a machinist and had never worked on diesels.

Tom, it is good to hear you are able to get out again.

CW, BBQ'ed steak sounds great for the middle of my three day weekend.

Good Monday morning everyone, and Happy August 1st.  Starting out this morning with fair skies and a temp of 75 degrees, going up to about 95 today.  And no rain in sight.  Believe this is our 16th day of 90 degrees or higher temp wise.

Coffee, juices and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go.  On the serving station this morning:  bacon, eggs, sausage, bagels, bear claws, cantaloupe, kiwi, papaya, and watermelon.

Hope everyone has a very good morning, keep cool and take care.

Peace be with you. All of us certainly could use some..... 73 and hazy in Carolina, expected to get to around 100 later. It made it to 98 here yesterday until a heavy thunderstorm came through and the temp dropped to 76. We had a series of storms last night with some much needed rain. Noisy but welcome.

Thanks for all the good wishes.

Everyone take care and stay cool as you can

....A new month....My, the Summer is passing along so fast.  Our start for this morning was 74 plus degrees and will probably end up in the mid 90's as it's been doing almost each day.  And still dry.  Clear blue skies.

Hope each poster here gets a good start on the new month.

Good afternoon.

I'm off to a family BBQ this afternoon. Only about 10:30 this morning a thunder storm warning was issued for this afternoon. Right now it is 63° with a high of 73° later.

Railfans in the area got a nice treat this morning, if they have the City of Calgary heritage calendar. The picture for August is the former Ogden Hotel, just outside the Ogden Shops gate. It had been built to house single railway workers, then became a railway YMCA, a hotel, then an apartment building. For most of its' existence it housed what could be described as a "rough" crowd.

The oldest unsolved homicide in Calgary happened there. It was interesting when a year or so ago the Police declared the investigation closed. At the time of the murder the legal drinking age was 21, so when they made the announcement it was because the youngest person legally in the place would have been 100 years old.

They are now rehabbing and refurbishing the building to be housing and some sort of program facility for homeless people. It should look pretty good when it is done. It is a brick building with lots of white trimming and lattice work like a lot of early apartment buildings in Calgary had.

Everyone have a good day.

Evening all.  Sorry about not being back in before now.  But Walt and I both had our eyes examined this afternoon, and have only been home about an hour.  Good news for Walt:  his eyes are doing just fine.  Not so good for me:  Doctor says I have the beginnings of catteracs (sp?) and I have to go back in three months to be tested for glaucoma.

Not sure what our current temp is, but it sure is HOT.

For supper tonight, we have:  Spaghetti and meatballs with garden salad and your choice of bread sticks or garlic Texas toast.

Everyone have a good evening, keep cool and take care.  See you in the morning.

Paula, I'm sorry to hear that you are beginning to have cataract trouble. It may be that it will be some time before you have to have them removed, for they can grow slowly. I don't remember now just when it was, but Ricki had two separate operations two or three years ago to remove her cataracts.

I became really aware of my cataracts a year and a half ago when I woke up after major surgery, and could not read the clock across the room--with my glasses on! After getting home, I found a really old pair of glasses (bifocals, not the trifocals I had been wearing for several years) that made it possible for me to see as I wanted to. As soon as I could, I went to our eye doctor, and learned (a) that such an operation can have an affect on cataracts and (b) that there was so little difference between those old glasses (except that they were bifocals) and the best new prescription that he said I did not need new glasses! Lately, I have had occasional trouble focussing on what I am reading, and went back last week--and, again, there was so little difference between what I was wearing and the best new prescription that there was no point in my getting new glasses--but I need to be careful about my sugar intake because a high blood sugar count can make cataracts bothersome (I have been told by my M. D. that I am a border-line diabetic).

We have had a cool day, with light rain in the morning (some areas around here have had heavy rain), and we expect clear skies before the weekend.

Well, according to the eye doctor; my "News" was better than CW's.....my prescription for glasses doesn't need to be changed, and my eyes are doing sort of  fine..........after my cataract surgery in '03. I need to have minimal  surgery on eyes within this next year to ensure cataracts are gone, don't come back, etc. I'm not sure I'm prepared for other things.

Joe, it is interesting you mention that. I hadn't given the matter much thought, but since, as I say, there is some sort of program going in to the old hotel, I suspect some of my tax dollars have been brought to bear on the problems you have mentioned.

The family BBQ was great. No storms materialized and it was very pleasant outside. I eat hamburgers from restaurants and Drive-ins so much that I never make them at home. I can't tell you last time I had homemade ones before tonight. They were great along with corn on the cob, potato salad, and coleslaw. For desert we had cake and ice cream. One of the best meals I have had in a long time.

That is all for now. I may have some interesting RR related news tomorrow but I have to check on a few details first.

Gather around for your funny of the day:

Long story, short - seems Amtrak hit a pivot irrigation section that was on the BNSF tracks about an hour west of here @ 6am this morning.  Damaged the lead engine enough that Lincoln had to send out a motor to pick up the train and continue on east.

Seems the landowner didn't program the walking irrigation correctly and it wandered off on its own.  Black EyeMischief

Poor Amtrak doesn't have enough grief normally.....

Bruce's BBQ sounds really good right now....Always love good BBQ.  And since it isn't hot here in the house, don't have to necessarily eat too light.....Dinner

With those pivot irrigation system, the limit of travel (If it cannot go completely around) is supposed to be protected by what looks like a highway steel guardrail  that the rubber/steel tires hit at right angles.....if those are missing, hope Amthrax sics the legal dogs on the agridummies.....

Had something similar happen between Shallow Water, KS and White Woman Bottoms on the old Garden City District of ATSF in the mid-1980's, except it was a branchline (70# rail) in the dark. (The irrigation system only ran at night and the roadswitcher Garden City-Scott City  usually ran only once a week in the daylight)...gotcha. Rancher was ticked when railroad refused to pay for damaged equipment and then sent him a bill for the railroad respose to the incident.

Must have been really flat at the accident site.

Mudchicken Nothing is worth taking the risk of losing a life over. Come home tonight in the same condition that you left home this morning in. Safety begins with ME.... cinscocom-west

Here's our light menu for tonight:

1.  Salads:  Caesar, garden; tuna salad, chicken salad, and potato salad

2.  Your choice of beef or pork BBQ with chips and any of the above listed salads

3.  Watermelon or cantaloupe slices/chunks

4.  Fresh vine-ripened sliced tomatoes w/or without cottage cheese

Our high today is 97 degrees.  We do have a slight chance of seeing some rain tomorrow morning, maybe around 6 a.m., then again tomorrow afternoon.

Everyone have a good evening, keep as cool as possible, and take care.

After a big meal yesterday a light supper tonight is probably a good idea. 73° right now and sunny. There is only a slight chance of thundershowers for the next few days.

As I mentioned yesterday Calgary's skyline is being opened up by the demolition of an almost century old landmark. I set up another thread with a link so I didn't have to retype all the info. During WWI, in order to get grain for food for men, and feed for animals to Europe, the government of Canada built huge grain elevators in several large centres in Western Canada to streamline shipments of grain to the east coast. The one in Calgary made a good landmark if you got lost. And my aunt and uncle lived near a similar one in Saskatoon, SK and it was a good aid in driving to their place. The idea never really transitioned back into a peacetime role and private grain companies looked after their business in their own facilities for the balance of the last century. The article I linked to has a bit of the history of the grain business out here.

There doesn't seem to be any other RR news here so everyone enjoy the rest of your day.

Good evening!

Or should I say good morning.....

Paula, Thanks for the birthday wishes and the food. I didn't have internet access on sunday or I would have definitely been here. I think I will just step back into the kitchen and grabe some Sunday leftovers....

Tonight is my last night working this week, and thnaks god, but its not too bad now that we have this place lined out and the new facility online. And lucky me, the County Fair starts on wednesday, so that will probably fill up my days off.

About that center pivot and the Amtrak train. It doesn''t necessicarily have to be flat. My dad's neighbor was combineing some corn, and was walking his pivot out of the way, but had an emergency, so he left it thinking he would be back soon. He got back, and one of the towers, that drives it had climbed up the cutting head and onto the cab! In a few places where landowners have allowed thier land to be drilled for oil and gas, the producers build ramps that elevate the pivot over the wellhead equipment. So they are pretty powerful machines!
