.....A seasonal appearing morning.  Some hazy sunshine peeking thru light overcast.  Spring is  growing...!  No measurable snow now for just a few days shy of a month.

CW - 78 here today, 55 tomorrow and mid 30's by weekend.  Ah spring!

Been watching the NL webcam.  Going to have owlets and something in the Helmond nestbox this spring.  Right now, both have mothers that spend a lot of time in the boxes, but possibly no eggs yet.

I have my south window open wide, can lean back in my puter chair, listening to the birds singing and the train whistles.  Just like my hammock in the diner.

Having said that - time for a spring nap!

Good Tuesday morning everyone.  Overslept this morning, and puter taking its own sweet time in booting up.

Bruce, if our 81 degrees from yesterday thrilled you, you'll absolutely love today:  supposed to get up to the mid 80s with plenty more sunshine on tap.

Coffee, juices, milk, chocolate milk, hot water for tea are fresh and ready to go.

On the serving station:  bagels, bear claws, fresh fruit (kiwi, papaya, cantaloupe), turkey bacon, pork sausage, scrambled eggs, toast, cereal.

Guess I'll see you all this afternoon, after I get through with Tuesday Produce.  You all take care and have a good morning.

...Well Bruce, I note a few more people in here today, so perhaps it's not going belly up yet.

Here....No snow, but temps in low 70's today....Hazy sunshine.  Grass is growing.

Nothing exciting occuring here today....Did have 2 Dr's. appointments, scheduled, and got thru them with flying colors.

Wife met me at one Dr's. office and then followed me to near by Meijer's gas station and big box store as she was headed for the grocery.  But first, I put gas in both vehicles....55 dollars worth and that was just to bring the tanks up to about 3/4 full....

Like to catch it at it's "lower price", and add some to our vehicles....Play the game along with them.  One of them requires Premium too.

At 2:53 p.m., we have a temp of 81 degrees, and it is clouding up. Both Walt and I were out earlier; we went in opposite direction, though.  Sure is nice out, and the breeze isn't so bad, so far.  It is manageable, anyway.

Bruce, I'm the one responsible for writing UK for University of Kentucky.  That is what the University is known as around the state of Kentucky.  And I believe UK can also stand for University of Kansas.

I've set out the makings for you all to "build your own" sandwiches, subs, hoagies, whichever you prefer.  (Just heard an ice cream truck ringing their bell outside.)

Everyone enjoy your afternoon, and you all take care.

Good morning everyone.

Quentin, not a lack of interest, it just seemed there was too darn much "real life" intruding into my railfan activities yesterday. Telephone calls, out for supper, and catching up on necessary household errands.

I can't recall the last time I went over 24 hours without even a chance to look at the forum. And yes, sports, not Basketball but Curling, was part of the distraction yesterday. I can't find it now, but one of you had me going over the weekend talking about UK, up here it means something entirely different!Big Smile So I went to the TSN site and looked up this NCAA thing. TSN is the network that handles the Championship Curling.

Well, that weather warning I was talking about turned into much ado about nothing. I think we have gotten as much snow since the warning ended as we got the whole time it was in effect. And that is not very much. So little in fact I haven't even seen a number mentioned. And there were no snow related accidents or even highway closures that I could see. I thought of Larry though when I did read one story. It seems a store selling fireplaces had a fire. The store manager said it was a good reminder not to place combustibles too close to heat sources!

There is light snow right now with a temperature of 22°F, a wind of 7 mph, and a wind chill of 14°. So much for the first day of spring. And there is a half, to one and a half, more inches of snow forecast for today, and an inch more for Tuesday.

Hope everyone has a good day.

Bruce

Well, Syracuse is out of it - lost to Marquette last night.  Michigan State lost a couple of days ago.  I'll have to check and see if there's anybody else I'm interested in...

Raining with a hint of snow this morning.  Old Man Winter isn't giving up easy.

I stop in from time to time, but don't always write anything on the wall...

I was about to type "onward," which reminded me of a story - years ago a senior class posed for a group picture.  At their feet was a placard with their class motto - "Foward Ever, Backward Never."  As the photographer was "post processing" the prints, he "vignetted" the picture (faded it out around the edges).  In the process, he truncated the class motto to "Ever Backward..."

Onward to the day's projects.

Good Monday morning everyone (if anyone bothers to show up this morning).  Guess everyone was either busy watching NCAA games or out roaming around.

69 degrees and partly cloudy here in Louisville, KY this morning.  Supposed to see a high today in the mid to upper 70s.  Going to be a beautiful day, although on the breezy side, with winds 10 to 20 mph.

Coffee, juices and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go.  Breakfast is on the serving station.

Mookie, if you're coming in, I've got your coffee mug ready for coffee to be poured into it.  Our rockers are set up right by the big bay window, so we can see the trains this morning.

....Wow, this place is full of none activity...!  Is the weather too nice for people to be on their computers...

Almost completely vacated in here today.  Maybe the weather....maybe some losing interest.  Basketball...?

Spring / Summer....some of us will see more rail activity as opposed to being inside so much in our Winter months.  Jean just asked me if I heard all the trains yesterday and I had to reply..."no"....Perhaps, they wern't on my radar.  It was a real nice day and we did just a bit of clean up yard work....leaves under shrubs....I cut down our ornamental tall "grass" that comes back up each season, and got it ready for the trash truck on Wed.

I didn't get it cut down last fall....So, I got out the electric hedge trimmers and sliced it off across the bottom....It soon will be renewing itself.  It's in one of the areas at a corner of the house....Jean usually has flowers around it during the Summer.

Sorry, no railroad chatter to comment on...

Good Sunday afternoon:  Joe, thanks for opening up this morning.  When I came in at 7 a.m., the doors were locked:  everything down for maintenance.  This is the first chance I've had to get back in here.

Joe, be sure to wish Stacey a Happy Birthday from us!  (I did log onto facebook this morning, and send her a birthday greeting.)

Mookie, you are definitely right:  pizza would be good to dunk in milk, and then use the milk w/chocolate cake!!  Just wish I could have some.  But until I can get my cholesterol down, most sweets are off limits.  I have eaten a few gingerbread cookies, as they don't seem to have much sugar in them (at least I can't taste any sugar, just the ginger).

For our Sunday Dinner today:

1.  Roast beef w/all the trimmings

2.  Grilled pork chops w/broccoli & butter sauce, garden salad and dinner rolls w/real butter.

We too are to be getting some rain sometime this afternoon, w/maybe some thunder boomers late afternoon, evening.  Right now, though, the sun is shining.

Everyone have a good afternoon, and you all take care.

I still don't know what to make of our weather here. I should never have said it was boring. We are still waiting for the storm I was texted about yesterday. In fact I have received three more texts about it since. They are still calling for 5" of snow in the next 24 hours and maybe 2 more inches in the 24 hours after that. 32°, E 12mph winds, and THICK heavy overcast skies currently. It has been abnormally dark all day today.

I hope everyone's favourite teams are winning today, but I have a situation that you likely don't encounter. The World Women's Curling Championship is being played in Denmark from today until next Sunday. I lied down early last evening and then got up to watch the first Canadian game from there at 2-5:30 AM MDT. Then I went back to bed. One has lots of time on their hands when you are retired, but some would say maybe I have too much time on my hands to do stuff like that. Many of the games from this point forward will be shown at a more sensible time, on a tape delay basis.

Interesting story on the TRAINS Newswire yesterday about the state of the rail transportation component of the Canadian grain industry. I then went to the CN and CP websites to read their responses to the government suggestions. This is a fascinating topic for me, as I have both railroaders and farmers in my family tree, and this topic has come up more than once or twice.Hmm I see also that there is an active grain loading thread on the go in the forum, so I may have to offer my My 2 Cents there as well.

Well, it is pizza time! Thanks CW.

Well, the Cats did it again:  they managed to beat W. Virginia!!  Go Cats!!  Don't know if Morehead has started their game yet or not.  Decided to come to the puter for awhile.

Nice and sunny, and quite breezy, from what I can see looking out the front window.  I haven't been outside, since this morning, when I got the paper off the porch.

Here is our Saturday Night Pizza Fest menu:

1.  Anchovie

2.  Canadian bacon

3.  Cheese

4.  Chicago style

5.  Goetta

6.  Hawaiian

7.  Italian sausage

8.  Pepperoni/mushroom

9.  Supreme

10.  Ham & green peppers

For Dessert:  Chocolate cake w/milk and/or ice cream and peach cobbler.

I hope everyone's team does good in the tournament, if they're playing this evening.  You all have a good evening and take care.

A light dusting of snow this AM, but nothing significant - just enough so you knew it snowed.

Clear this afternoon, but cool - in the low 30's.  Doesn't look like the week ahead is going to be too bad - typical March stuff for this area.

The bulb garden (tulips, lillies, daffodils) is starting to show signs of life.  Kind of a pain this year, though, as I need to strip the paint off the front of the sun porch, which is behind the bulb garden...

Back to projects.

Good Morning All.  Currently 67 and cloudy here in Alamo City.  Expected high today wil be 88 once the low clouds burn off.  We continue to remain very dry.  Need to get some rain soon...all the systems are passing us to the north.

Enjoy your Saturday!

....A nice Sunny Saturday morning here.  A bit cooler this morning than it's been recently, but still nice.  Grass is growing.  Still believe the John Deere and I will be mowing grass yet, this month.

Have a brand new seat assy. to install on it....So, we'll be riding on "new" again.  John Deere stuff sure is "salty", pricewise.  But can't complain, as it's been a good tractor.

Golfers have been busy on the golf course behind us, for some time now....

Was just taking a peek over on the hotel cam in Roanoke, and witnessed two WB trains passing side by side.  Sun shining there too.

Guess we're to see a "bigger....closer" moon today.  Brighter too, so if it's clear then, we'll check it out.  And how about tomorrow....Spring...!

CW - I would like crab salad and club crackers tomorrow for lunch, if you please.  It is my favorite warm weather dish and we have been having some very nice lukewarm weather.  Along with chocolate cake & cold milk, of course!

Good Saturday morning everyone.  Sorry I didn't make it back in yesterday.  Decided to take a bus ride, and do a little bit of window shopping.  Did end up buying a couple of items, but that was about it.  Just enjoyed being out.  Missed all the rain we got, as where I was, there wasn't a drop of rain.  When I got home, the streets were all as wet as could be.

Mookie, I'll have your crab salad and club crackers ready for you right at noon, is that all right?

Meanwhile, coffee, juices and Saturday brunch menu are all fresh and ready to go.

48 degrees and mostly cloudy skies at 7:51 a.m.  Supposed to see a high of about 64 degrees for today.  Yesterday, got into the mid to upper 70s before the rain came into the area.

Going to watch UK play at 12:15 this afternoon.  Will be back later to fix the pizzas for our Saturday Night Pizza Fest.  Everyone have a good day and take care.

We have had snow promised in the valley two three times in the past week, but what did fall did not last long. The mountains have received more, and the nowpack around here is about 140% of normal, so we may be able to bathe this summer without worrying.

I saw a robin in the front yard this morning, and the hyacinths by the front door have come out of the ground and promise many blooms (from the number of buds that are visible). Lows are in the high thirties, and the highs get into the fifties.

Bruce - like Mudchicken said - kind of like a train - expect snow anytime, any place up until May 15 here in the true midwest.  Aggrevating, isn't it.

I have been suffering from incredible spring fever.  Also a nagging cough and the feet/nose mixup.  I did finally get the nose to stop running, but the cof lingers.  It really saps my energy.

Have been struggling out, tho - keep going trackside, but have seen nothing even worth mentioning.

I smile when I read that you all are struggling with lawns.  Landlord put our entire backyard into concrete for parking and  has the neighborhood's nicest looking lawn out front.  It is his passion, and it looks incredible all thru the warm months.  (All clay, too)  If it were mine, I think I would put it into concrete, rather than spend all that time on it.

Randy - cool.  This summer, you can write about your grass!  Smile, Wink & Grin

CW - I would like crab salad and club crackers tomorrow for lunch, if you please.  It is my favorite warm weather dish and we have been having some very nice lukewarm weather.  Along with chocolate cake & cold milk, of course!

Sir C - how is the Gus dude doing?

Tree - watching the owls and the kestrels both.  They all have that same round look and fluffy feathers, so thinking the kestrels are the day birds and then during the nite, they put on the owl outfits and continue the mouse chase.  (Hear the female owl singing for her mate right now)  Off to do some window peeking.....

I should never have said that!

There is a wisdom in emergency services - never say the "Q" word.  Call us superstitious, but I've had several times when someone uttered it and we were headed for a call shortly thereafter....

Woke up to unexpected thunder early this AM - checked the radar and also found an advisory for some wind and thunder.  It came down from our neighbors to the north.  We tend to be a bit leary on that - the last major wind event we had snuck in across the St Lawrence River.

No exciting weather news

I should never have said that! I subscribe to a text notification service from The Weather Network. Our version of The Weather Channel. I posted that message at 2:56 MDT and at 3:37 MDT while I was out grocery shopping I get a text message of a Snowfall Warning for Saturday afternoon!

Good afternoon. 37° and sunny today. No exciting weather news, no new rail news. A surprisingly boring day, yet not at all unpleasant.

I have been spending the past week reading a history of the Brooks, AB area as told by the local newspaper, The Brooks Bulletin. "Mile 723 - Brooks - A Railstop Turns 100". What started out as a stock loading pen and a boarding house for cowboys, is now a major centre in Alberta. My mom's parents moved to the area 90 years ago this year, and I have found the whole book quite interesting. While far from being a railway book, the CPR has played an important role in Brooks history.

When the CPR realized the land was to arid to just break up the ranch land and sell it to homesteaders they built an irrigation system. This system became the Eastern Irrigation District, serving an area roughly equal in size to the Canadian Province of Prince Edward Island. The Canadian Pacific Railway - Department of Natural Resources was run remarkably similar to the railway. Instead of Superintendents and Road Masters, you had Superintendents and Water Masters. And you had matching houses scattered around the countryside, just like railway stations without freight sheds. And the CPR - DNR HQ yard buildings didn't look all that different from small CPR Division Point facilities. My grandfather worked for the CPR - DNR from 1921 until the EID was formed in 1935, and he took his CPR pension payout and went farming.

The CPR transcontinental line from Medicine Hat to Calgary is known as the Brooks Sub.

The book has been an interesting diversion from my usual RR reading, but not that much of a diversion.

My yard is mostly clay.  I try not to have to dig it up much.  If it's wet, I end up with "elevator shoes."  If it's dry, I need a pick to get through it.  Along about August each year I can count on finding cracks...

A windy 50 here today.  Winds are brisk, to say the least.

Q: Gotta aerate the lawn twice a year here (spring/fall) or the ground gets so hard that nothing grows or holds water. (The clay and lack of topsoil makes it like growing grass on brick)

Whilst I'm making the yard look like swiss cheese, the dogs go nuts sniffing EVERY sod plug.

Got snow this morning, about 2 inches on the grass, 60 degrees by this afternoon.

.....Another nice morning.  Sunshine and light clouds.  Perhaps not quite as warm as yesterday, but still very nice.

Green things are starting to make themselves seen....A new presence.  A few days like these last 2 days, and leaves will be bursting thru.  Lawn people put down first installment of fertlizer on the lawn yesterday...

Again, with nearby friend and son, we've made arrangements to go in with them to rent a lawn roller, and get our lawns rolled.

Wish I had more space in my little barn to store one that can be purchased to pull behind a lawn tractor....They weigh in the area of 6 to 700 lbs.  That's one 36 X 24" and filled with water.  They are easy to pull as I've done it in the past with a borrowed one.

Tulips are up and growing.
