Good morning to all.   And thanks for best wishes on my "different" experiences here recently.  We're trying our best to keep "it" under control.  Going to stop at the pharmacy this morning to fill another prescp. for different kind of pain pills than we have here at home, so we'll have all options to help control this situation.

Yes Jen it is a molar that's had attention before and a tooth one would like to preserve.

It was 11 degrees when I first looked this morning, with beautiful sunshine in a clear sky.

And Murray....Your correct..."the little truck that could"....It does have positraction, and as long as one is easy on the throttle, it does fairly well.  Have 140# of sand bags way to the back of the bed and despite it's rather wide tires, I get around in this flat country pretty good with it.

Debated yesterday morning whether to take the car...which is AWD, but decided against it as I've never driven it under these circumstances.  Decision worked out well.

I note even down in Houston {Houston Ed's place}, there was school closings....This has been a far reaching mess for many people.

But today.....The sun is shining.  Best to all.

I think I will try to get out today for first time since Monday.  Mostly for the squirrels and birds - to buy corn, seed and peanuts and some for the people.

It is going to be in mid-30's with sunshine!  I think I can safely say we might just be a little closer to spring?

BNSF has been very, very busy since snowstorm.  Heard the motors all day yesterday and last nite.  They are tapering off the whistles (closed xings and wayside horns) more all the time.  Getting quieter.  So sad.

Much warmer today (23F!), but windy.  Could be interesting if the snow blows around.

Headed to the railroad shop tomorrow - the 12":1' railroad shop.  I think I've got some cabinet repairs in one of our snack bar cars on tap for me.   We'll also be working on getting one of our "new" locomotives ready for paint.

Morning All:

Well, we had a combination of ice and then a dusting of snow overnight here in Alamo City.  The TV is reporting very treacherous driving conditions.  They have closed all our major freeways in the city...requiring anyone brave enough to be driving to use access roads instead.

Doesn't look like I'll be going in to work today.

Everyone be safe out there!

Good Friday morning everyone.  Hope you all had a very good evening/night.  Well, we watch Matrix Reloaded last night.  It was pretty good. We have a current temp in the low 20s, supposed to get up into the low 40s for a high today.  Then s-n-o-w coming back in tonight.  Supposed to have 1 to 2 inches by tomorrow morning.  Snow is in our forecast all next week, with a wintry mix tomorrow night, Sunday morning, with more snow showers.

Coffee, juices, other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go, including plenty of hot water for our hot tea and hot cider is also available.  On the serving station this morning:  a selection of doughnuts (including the good chocolate ones), bacon, sausage, eggs, biscuits & gravy.

If anyone is in the Louisville, KY area, we have the Great Train Expo tomorrow and Sunday at the Louisville International Convention Center in downtown Louisville.  We are planning on going.

Everyone have a good morning, keep warm and take care.

Of all times....I've been fighting a tooth ache these last 2 days and of course that had me out of sorts, etc....Using some over the counter stuff to get thru these 2 days....and hopefully will arrive {2mi.}, at our dentist tomorrow morning....This one will be salty....Don't care....Just want relief.

"Over the counter"--back when we were young, it was called "patent medicine."

............Trip to Dentist went well.  My concern was our driveway, with the little snow covered with the hard coat of ice...{that caused my fall},   Did not think the little truck would negotiate getting back up the driveway, but it drove right up and into the garage.

The little truck that could.

Antibiotics from the dentist....pain pills, and then later to go into the tooth to see if enough can be salaged, and if so he will do what is necessary....Root Canal or whatever.

If I can't control it with the antibiotics and pain pills...guess we'll have to go back and do a plan B.

Plan B--string and doorknob?Smile

I am still in the process of having a toothache late last year being taken care of; the root canal has been done, and I understand that I will end up with a new crown that is bridged to two other crowns. Crown him with many crowns?

It's good to know that you seem to have suffered little, except to your dignity, from the fall.

Still call for snow down here.  Temperature in Alamo City is now 26 degrees.  Depending on how much falls, wil determine whether or not we have work tomorrow.

Well, I've gotten all the bills paid, went to do a little bit more grocery shopping, and am now back home.  Our high got to 31 degrees today.  When I went to go catch the bus to go to the grocery, I had on my gloves.  While standing at the bus stop, I took them off, folded them up, and put them in my pocket.  Felt nice outside!

Here's the menu for tonight:

1.  Burritos and Tacos

2.  Fried rice:  beef, chicken, pork, and special (beef, chicken, pork and shrimp together in the rice)

3.  Beef w/broccoli

4.  Pepper steak

5.  Moo Goo Gai Pan

6.  Roast pork w/Chinese vegetables

Last night, the three of us watched The Matrix.  Later on this evening, we're going to watch The Matrix 2.  Should be an interesting evening!!

Everyone enjoy, have a good evening, and you all take care.

I am getting here so late today all I can report is that we have already passed our forecasted high and we are sitting at 45°. We have a Chinook blowing here today.

The cold weather east of us has moderated and operations seem to have returned to something like normal. Warming up can sometimes cause the same rail related problems as cooling down. RR management would just love a constant temperature environment.

Quentin, I hope you will be feeling better soon.

Good Thursday morning everyone.  Quentin, I hope you are feeling better this morning, from you fall yesterday.  I also hope that you can make it to the dentist today.

Coffee, juices, and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go this morning.  Breakfast is on the serving station.

Temp is about 20, 22 degrees this morning, but the wind chill is down in the low teens.  At least the wind as died down, and no gusts.

Everyone be careful outside today.  Hopefully, you can stay inside where it is warm and dry.  Take care and see you all later.

Quentin, appearances can certainly be deceiving, can't they? I've had a similar experience--once, when out walking for my health, I stepped on a patch of snow that looked much like others I had stepped on while moving on--and the ice under the snow threw me, twisting my ankle so I had to hobble home. From what you wrote, you had no difficulty getting back into the house.

Our mail box is right by our front door, and the paper is delivered to the front door, usually landing on the stoop that I built so I could roll Ricki up and down from/to the walk to the carport (I do not have to stoop as far as I did before I built the stoop). In the same subdivision, many people have to go out to the street to get their mail, but on our street (and some others) the mailman comes right to the house.

9 above and sun has been out all day.  We have around 7" of snow on top of thick ice.  Perfect.  They clear the snow and you can skate down the street.  Too cold to use melt on it.

Q - you must learn to either hire your mail/paper brought in, train your dog, or stay inside.  It isn't worth the hospital bill and pain.  Our mailbox is on our small porch wrought iron support.  We can use our newspaper/can/box gripper that all old people use, open the box door and get the mail out w/o ever going out on the porch.  Just be sure you have a good grip, otherwise the mail will lay there until June!

Randy - I have never and never will figure out how truckers drive on ice.  Truckers, police, fire, no one!  I have lived with ice for my entire, um, 25 years and have driven around 50 of those 25 years.  Hated ice, still hate ice and now won't even ride with Driver on ice.

CW - get a canvas cover and put it on air c on the outside.  Just tie on with rope.  Then put cover on inside.  Then robe, hot chocolate, slippers and a warm hat.

Murray - Houston is not very happy with their weather, either.  But I bet you will both get to 60 before we ever get to 40.

Must pull blind and turn on light for nite.  Landlord out snowblowing the drive and I don't want to wear myself out watching him work.

Nite.

.....We're still warm....we've been blessed by keeping the power supply up and running in our area.

Believe we're thru the worst....I believe that has been {for us}, the ice and sleet mixture on the power lines....and now today it's wind with gusts up to 40 mph will be occuring until this evening.....Hopefully, the power lines can handle that....Believe we're past the ice conditions and now it's some {horizonal}, snow for today....just 1 to 3" bracket.

But tomorrow morning, we'll have extreme cold.....but sunshine during the day.  So far, our scattered family has survived pretty good from the conditions.  More blessings.

Wish the best to those that might be still struggling

We had rolling blackouts through Texas today.  Power was randomly shut down for 45 minute intervals.

We were just placed on a winter storm watch for Thursday night and Friday.  Snow in the forecast.  Measurable snow here is a rarity.  It does happen, but not that often.

Our low tonight is 18.

Everyone be careful out there!

Must keep in mind we're not a teenager anymore.....

Don't we know it! Some days...

Weather wise we are sitting pretty good in Calgary compared to all the places I see on the news. 34° right now, 12:45 MST, with a high of 36° later. It is clear but we have a wind at 12 mph which is giving us a windchill in the high 20's.

It is still very cold east of us, in Saskatchewan and Manitoba, and I see where both CN and CP have had to shorten their trains to keep brake line pressure up. Also, winter speed limits are in effect (rail pull aparts). Even if you have the best diesels money can buy, at thirty to forty below zero you can't keep air up in more than about eighty cars (less than 5000 feet).

Which reminds me of something a friend of my father said once, in a way off the record comment. This fellow had been a buddy of my Dad's back when they were both Operators, but he had risen to the rank of Superintendent. They were in an elevator after a particularly bad day of cold weather railroading, and the man said that we can't run trains any longer than we did with steam. And at that point they were using SD40's and -2's.

In the if it isn't one thing it is something else department; later this afternoon the landlord is coming around with an exterminator looking for mice. My part of the building has never had a problem in the 20+ years I've been here, but this outfit convinced building management to pay for a building wide sweep. I will be curious to see what they find out.

I've got to go out and pay some bills later, so I might just have supper out tonight.

Well, it was only a 3.5 hour drive to Perrysburg, interstates were just wet, but it's still worse in the Chicago area, so will just get up early tomorrow morning and blow through after they have cleaned off everything.  Load will be late, but that's better than upside down in the ditch......

Think the TA in Perrysburg needs to hire a different snow removal service, they are using a little bitty truck to try to plow the lot out, and they are fighting a losing battle.  Truck is sitting in 6 inches of snow, should not have too much trouble getting out later, due to weight in the box.

Back to puttering around, see everyone later......

Thanks CW re: having power.....Since I wrote that I took a heck of a fall going down our dirveway on my way to the mail box....Flat on my back and head.....Believe the bit of snow, covered with a hard coat of ice saved me from major damage.

Still didn't get the mail & paper....The surface is slick ice on the snow and one must stomp hard to even break thru the ice.....I simply got balance out of control down the slight incline and down I went.

Must keep in mind we're not a teenager anymore.....

At 1:13, the sun is shining, be it not a warm sun.  Wind seems to have died down.  Looks like just a slight breeze blowing right now.

Quentin, glad that you all still have power on!

Here is the menu for the rest of the day:

1.  Leftover soup and chili

2.  Hamburgers and cheeseburgers w/fries (regular and curly) and garden salad

3.  Beef tips w/noodles and garden salad, w/crescent rolls

Took laundry up to bedroom to fold and put away, and felt a decidedly cold breeze in the room.  Had to put a cover that I crocheted on the front of the air conditioner, to block to the cold air from coming in.

Everyone enjoy your afternoon, keep warm, safe and take care.

Well, the storm has arrived and all the schools (not to mention the Army base and a lot of other activities) threw in the towel.

Haven't driven (nor do I plan to, if I can avoid it), but visibility doesn't really look bad here despite winds as high as 18MPH.

I do think I've heard thunder once or twice, which is never a good thing.

The roads are apparently a mess - hearing some reports on the scanner.

Once I get the paper and the mail, sounds like a good day to stay inside.  Plenty of stuff I can do.

Good Wednesday morning everyone.  We have a temp in the low to mid 20s, but with winds gusting to at least 40 mph, if not stronger, it feels like the low teens outside.  About two hours ago, we had flurries being carried by the winds.  The flurries seem to have dissipated.

Coffee, juices, hot chocolate, hot cider, etc., are fresh and ready to go.  Breakfast is also ready and on the serving station.

I was watching the news, trying to catch Punxsutawney Phil, but so far I haven't seen him.   Of course, that could have something to do with my being downstairs now, here at the computer.

Hope everyone is staying warm, keep happy warm thoughts, and see you all after a bit.  Take care, you all.

Well, the truckstop lot was a sheet of ice......

Up early today, checking out weather and road conditions.  SE Wisconsin is closed to all traffic, 10-foot drifts and the national guard vehicles are getting stuck.  Chicago: Closed.  Indy Toll Road:  snowpack, with a ban on doubles and triples.

I may try running over to Perrysburg from Kingsville after the sun comes up, CB traffic saying roads are okay if one goes slow.  Very little snow forecast for today, which should help get what's left of last night's precip off the roads, and at least get closer to home for the weekend.....

I feel for you people who are having the heavy snow and cold weather along with it. The temeperature here this morning was in the teens, and it did not rise much above that--and the wind did blow and the wind did blow. We may have some snow tonight, and we can expect the temperature to be close to zero in the morning; I am going to tell the furnace NOT to drop the temperature during the night (we usually have it drop ten degrees, and it is almost warm again when we get up).

The last ice storm I remember was in north Georgia New Year's Day/ Night, 1961. The night before, I went down to Jesup from Atlanta, on the Kansas-City Florida Special, and I had two full facing seats in a Frisco coach; I do not remember waking until we were almost into Jesup. Going back to Atlanta, I had one uncomfortable seat in an unheated washroom and had the choice of either using my overcoat as a cushion between my head and the wall or wearing it in an attempt to stay warm. When I got back to Atlanta, I rode a trolley bus out to Decatur--and watched the lights dim as we accelerated, and go bright again as we came to a srop; ice on the wires interfered with the transmission of the electricity (and there was much arcing and sparking), but not so much that we could not run. Ah, those days are gone.

Two doctor visits today, one just before lunch (lunch at the hospital where that doctor's office is) and the other in the middle of the afternoon, which put us in the five-o'clock home-going crowd (45 minutes for a 25 minute trip). Take it as it comes.
