Whoooo-eeee!  It may be just a blip on the national radar,

but we're getting hammered here.  Schools and businesses closing, cars off the road.  I'm about to head out to the driveway for some more quality time with the snowblower (already took 5-6" off this morning).

The round table has a hole for an umbrella (I don't have an umbrella for it).  Until this mornings snow (which has a little wind along with it), you could still see the "hole" in the "donut."

Worse - the "lake effect" warning doesn't kick in for better than an hour - hate to see what that's going to look like!

Mookie, I'm chanting that line myself!!   Hopefully, we can all survive the next 5/12 weeks, when the official day of spring begins!

The menu for the rest of the day:

1.  Sloppy joes w/your choice of sweet or dill pickles on the side, fries and slaw or salad.

2.  Reuben sandwiches w/tater chips

3.  Chili (mild) w/your choice of regular saltines or oyster crackers

4.  Oyster stew w/oyster crackers and salad

Snow hasn't started in our immediate Metro area yet.  I did hear at the beginning of the Noon News that one school district (thinking south of Jefferson County) will  be dismissing early.  Do know that south of Louisville, from Bullitt County on down south of us, are to get like 2 to 3 inches of the snow coming in.  The guessers are still predicting trace to no more than 1 inch for us.

Everyone enjoy your afternoon, and take care.  See you all later.

Mookie

Do you run a lot of DPU's up there?  We run about 97% DPU here, but then we run coal and grain with mixed in 3rd.  Our coal is almost all DPU and our grain is usually just as long, but runs with 2 on point and no DPU.

CP started using DPU's west of Calgary in the late sixties. Although then they were called Robots and Slaves. But their use in the other three direction has just exploded in the last three or four years. As the TRAINS article mentioned a few months ago, all of the benefits of using DPU's are being taken advantage of by CP.

I will be interested in seeing if anyone else has been having site problems.

Bruce - I had a lot of trouble with my hotmail yesterday.  A little trouble with Trains yesterday and today.  I am not sure if it is cable company, cold weather or sunspots.  Probably all 3.  My software worked just fine; scanned puter - no problems; deleted files - but I do all this regulary and my puter shows that it is right where it has always been - fast.  So figure it is the former.

Do you run a lot of DPU's up there?  We run about 97% DPU here, but then we run coal and grain with mixed in 3rd.  Our coal is almost all DPU and our grain is usually just as long, but runs with 2 on point and no DPU.

Maybe because coal goes east and west and grain goes south (downhill) Laugh

Good Morning. 9° here, high 27° Clear for the next few days. Chinook starting up, and highs should be above freezing tomorrow.

I have been having real problems with this site the last three evenings. Sunday and Monday night were dreadfully slow, but I wanted to reply to some posts yesterday, and i couldn't do it. Between about 8:45 and 10:30 PM MST I tried to get on to the site and it took forever. I tried to load the homepage, then the first of the news articles, and then reload the homepage. I tried several more times later on and still no luck. Just enough comes down the pipe, as it were, so I don't get a server not responding, or a timed out message, but it is not usable.  I have had no trouble getting on other sites, and I tried a random sampling of bookmarked sites I don't often visit, and I had no other problems. Has anybody else been experiencing this?

I got in a little train watching yesterday. On the way home, I came up on a line of cars that had just started moving after a WB grain train had passed, when it came back over the crossing to back down into Alyth yard.  Trains from the north have to come west onto the mainline, and then back into Alyth because the east leg of the Red Deer Sub. wye is so tight, it has been pretty much obsolete since the railway switched from 4-4-0's to Ten-Wheelers.. And the land acquisition costs to fix the problem would be prohibitive.

And was it ever a big train. Two GE's on the point and one more as a DPU on the end. Three General Electric units coming off of that line, means you are talking about a lot of grain. Somebody will be busy baking bread!

Hope everyone has a good day.

Good Wednesday morning everyone.  Cloudy skies with a temp in the teens, w/wind chills in the single to low teens.  Supposed to get a little bit more snow  starting sometime later this afternoon.

Coffee, juices and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go.  Breakfast is on the serving station.

Hope you all had a very good evening.  Didn't watch the UK basketball game last night (didn't start until 9 p.m., was too tired to stay up.  But did hear this morning that they won!!

Everyone have a good morning, keep warm and take care.  See you all later.

Afternoon/evening to all.  It's been a b-u-s-y - b-u-s-y afternoon.    After I got back from the Community Center, started in on laundry:  bed linens plus a few odds and ends of Walt's and my clothes.

Produce went well this morning.  Despite the temp being in the low 20s by 8 a.m., we had 59 people turn out this morning.  Potatoes, sweet potatoes, iceburg lettuce, radishes and oranges were on the Produce truck; bread, bagels, muffins and cheese danish on the Bread/Pastry truck.

I want to apologize to Jack Kelly (dining car).  I forgot about his birthday today.  Jack, I'm sorry I forgot this morning.  Wishing you a Happy B-Day [bday[] and many, many Happy Returns for the day.  Hope it has been a very good day for you, and wishing you many, many more birthdays to come!!

Supper menu tonight:

1.  Burritos, tacos, chimichangas, fajitas, enchiladas, Spanish rice, chopped lettuce w/diced tomatoes

2.  Leftover pork chop abracadbra w/broccoli, peas & corn, mashed taters & gravy, and crescent rolls

DESSERT:  Chocolate birthday cake w/white icing and ice cream.

Everyone enjoy your evening, keep warm and take care.  See you all later this evening, or in the morning.

Morning all, except to those in the Eastern and Atlantic Time Zone where it is Good Afternoon.

0° now with a NW 8 mph wind and a windchill of -13°. It is sunny and clear.. Sometimes on days like this, with the Sun reflecting off of the fresh fallen snow, it seems you need sunglasses more than on a hot day in summer. I will have to remember to bring mine when I go out later.

Yesterday after my second post here I was on the phone and you could hear snowblowers starting up everywhere. People were getting home from work and starting up small buzzy sounding ones to clean the sidewalk in front of their houses, and businesses were starting up larger ones, like the one to clean in front of our apartment building. It made for an interesting effect as everyone was doing it at different times, and in the cold the sound really carries. It is a variation on the weekend lawn cutting ritual.

Well, I have to get ready to go out. Hope the roads still aren't too bad.

Alert to nestcam watchers in NL:  2 Hobbies are in residence.  Might be a mated pair.  Eggs to follow?

#5 is off, but this is not unusual.  And they moved the canal camera up off the ground.  Watch for more ducks and their majestic kingfisher bird.  He is beautiful and quite talented.  And the resident rabbit that travels up and down the path just beyond the canal.

Camera #1 faces west, so will have some problems in the late afternoon coming up.  They move the camera to different spots when that happens.  Gives you a better idea of the surroundings.

Train whistles quiet this morning.  Think they froze in mid whistle.  Warmer days coming starting tomorrow.

Hokay, who left the freezer door open??

About 9 here now, not going very far upwards today, will be below zero the next few nights.  Would love to relax in the easy chair, but 1.  do not have an easy chair, and 2.  have to pack up and head out to the semi for another month to make some money.  Not sure which way I want to go, with the storm headed into the south, and the cold up north.  Will see where the road takes me....

See everyone later.....

Snowed all night, and it was in the 30-ish range until around midnight, so it was nice and slick.  Dropping now, very quickly.  Out at 0600 for an accident (due to slick roads and an inattentive driver) and it was +15F.  Now down to +7F at 8AM.  It'll be interesting to see how cold it eventually gets.

Gotta love fire-pager-as-alarm-clock...

Breakfast out of the way.  Too early to check the mail.   Project, or easy chair?

Good Tuesday morning everyone.  Currently 24 degrees here in Louisville this morning.  Our "high" today is to be 25 degrees.  Bruce and Mookie, thanks for the anniversary wishes.

Had some winds last night that dried all the moisture from the streets and sidewalks.  So JCPS is open, kiddoes will have to get up out of their warm beds and go to school this morning.

Coffee, juices and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go.  Regular breakfast menu is also ready and on the serving station.

Everyone have a good morning, and I'll see you all this afternoon, after I finish with Tuesday Produce/Bread,Pastry Trucks.  Take care, and see you all later.

JoeKoh

morning

well the game  was okay but can we get someone to sing the our national anthem correctly please??

stay safe

Joe

Yes, Joe, it is sad that whoever was responsible for finding someone to sing the National Anthem did not find someone who could sing. Granted, the tune,"Anacreon from on High" (the name of the tune used for the Anthem), with its range of notes is difficult to sing--I wonder if there did not exist, at the time that the poem was set to this tune, no other tune that fit the meter of Francis Scott Key's poem.  But there is no excuse whatsoever for hiring someone who cannot sing to present the Anthem to the public. How much did she pay to stand out there?

Even worse is when the person who is to sing presents his/her own idea as to how the tune should go.

Another full day today--a morning appointment for a shot in the left eye, complete with pictures of both eyes, and an afternoon appointment with a neurologist, both on the far side of the valley.

Bruce - I had someone deliver lost luggage once.  They called a cab and sent it to me.  Guess you could figure out that we don't have that big of an airport to really have someone full time.

It is a strange job alright. We have a population here of just over 1 million and to hear tell of it I don't think there are more than about 5 or 6 guys in the city that do it.

Great news, the Winter Storm Warning has ended. Let the digging out commence.

And yes, as expected my cleaning lady couldn't get here today.

CW, congratulations on your anniversary.

Very bad weather here. Winter Storm Warning continues. 2° with a NE 6 mph wind. Snow to continue until tonight with 2 to 4 more inches possible. Fortunately my schedule is such that I do not have to leave the apartment today. I should have a cleaning lady come in today, but I'm not sure she will make it if she has to travel by bus.

In the category of jobs you never think about but someone has to do it; her husband, who sometimes gives her a ride here depending on his schedule, works for a company that delivers lost airplane luggage from the airport back to people's hotels or homes. No such thing as a regular schedule, but he seems to do OK at it.

Nobody is going to do OK driving around here today. It will be a poor day to be out on a train, but so far I haven't seen any reports of delays.

We got a pretty good snow shower awhile ago.  It has now tapered down to a flurry every once in awhile. The guessers are now saying we could/should end up with 2 to 4 inches of snow by tomorrow.

I forgot to mention this morning, so will do so now:  sending Happy Anniversary wishes to my husband of 24 years, today, Walt a.k.a. Locomutt.  It's hard to believe that we've been together that long (and yes, as with most couples, every once in awhile, it seems like it has been double that length).  But I still love him as much as I did 24 years ago.

On the serving station, for the rest of the afternoon and evening, you will find:

1.  Leftover grilled boneless skinless chicken breasts

2.  Leftover pork chop abracadbra

Side dishes are:  Broccoli, sweet green peas w/corn, tossed salad, fresh from the oven crescent rolls.

Desserts today:  mince meat bars that are also fresh from the oven, chocolate pie, yellow cake w/chocolate icing, and peach cobbler.

Everyone enjoy your afternoon, take care, and I'll see you all later.

Good Monday morning everyone.  Rainy and 38 degrees here in Louisville this morning.  Rain supposed to change to snow around 3 p.m. this afternoon.  We're not supposed to have much accumulation:  1/2 to an inch, basically on grassy areas.

Well, Congratulations to the Packers and their fans.  Pittsburg, better luck next year. Neither Walt nor I watched any part of the game.  I will watch some football, and, I'm one of those people who could care less about football.

Coffee, juices and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go; including hot water for our tea drinkers.

Regular breakfast menu items are on the serving station.

Everyone have a good morning, take care, and I'll see you all later.

Our winter storm is proceeding apace. Blowing snow, 8°, wind SE 14 mph, windchill -8°. Lots of fun I don't need, getting around tomorrow. See you then.

And Lombardi comes home, again.......

Nice little party at my parents, though I had to use 4wd in the city, apparently the city does not believe in plowing or salting city streets.  About par for the city, they have not even cleared some of the sidewalks from the blizzard yet......

Back to watching some stuff recorded on the DVR......

If you can stand the football interludes, the commercials are often entertaining....

Fundraiser for a burned out family today raised over $2000 for them.  Lots of spaghetti and meatballs.

Busy day - started tankers with a mutual aid barn fire (I stayed behind in case the engine was needed) followed by an EMS call, followed by the fund-raiser, followed by another EMS call.  Hopefully we're done for the day.

At least a neighbor cleared part of my driveway for me while I was out.

Like Randy and truckers driving on ice, I don't understand what you can possibly discuss for minimum 9 hours before the SuperBowl.  I like football, just don't want to listen to that much tedious repetition.

Checked radar - it is so scattered I can't quite decide if we should duck and cover or just enjoy the 18 above tomorrow.

BNSF is sending DE in Joe's direction - with 2 greenies, no less!  And a nice long grain train south - the 1 pm grain train from somebody's railroad.  Today it was BNSF.  Some days it is KCS.

Valentine's day coming next weekend/Monday.  Send chocolates.  Any kind....  Kisses
