Whistling  Quentin , I recall the 55 Buick radio, a very good piece of equip. Also do you recall the Zenith tall one with a non blinking  big green eye ??  When Innersangtum program came on I thought the eye was watching me . Oh my how times have changed.

                                                          Jim

Jim....We're talking about some interesting radio times, and equipment.

Many home radios, console and table models, had the greenish / bluish tuning eye.....Narrow down the gap in it's face and you were tuned to best possible location for that station.

I remember we had an RCA table radio in the time bracket about 1940 and it had a {RCA type jack on the back of the chassis}, that was labled...."Television".....Don't know just what the makers had in mind of connecting the "two units" together when TV became available...??

Again, The Stereo AM car radio seemed to be a rare item....Anyone out there have / had one.....?  {This is of course in more modern times....Mine was a 1989 automobile}.

Good morning all.  Last week I saw a very long UP auto-rack with 2 DPUs in the middle. It was w/b on the BNSF.... For lunch today I'm thinking about mac & cheese. And for desert, my sis sent me a pic of how pumpkin pies are made sometimes.

Good Thursday morning everyone.  Mookie, glad you enjoyed the meat loaf.

We had 59 degrees outside, when I awoke at 4:50 this a.m.  Temp has dropped a couple of degrees already.  Our high today is to only be 67, and a cold front is working its way through.  Still going to be a very breezy day, and, since it is so dry, we are under a Red Flag warning for outdoors today.

Coffee, juices and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go.  Here's you mug, Mookie, ready to have your coffee poured when you get in.

On the serving station/warmer bar this morning:  bagels, bear claws, turkey bacon, scrambled eggs, sausage, fried taters  and homemade buttermilk biscuits w/sausage gravy.

Everyone enjoy your morning, take care, and if anyone has any meal requests for later today, just let me know.

Larry:  Yep, same industrial park, nice looking Alco and passenger car that I went past, plus the other switcher units that look to be Air Force units.  Next time I get that load, and it's on the weekend, will have to contact you.....

The ALCo is available.  It's an M420TR - strange looking cross between a switcher and a Century 420....

The USAF unit serves as our "shop switcher."

Don't worry about weekends - I'm available most any time.  Even if I can't get down there - stop into the shop and talk to our Chief Mechanical Officer, if he's there.

At the house now, ran out of hours to drive, so doing a restart at home, rather than in the truck.  Back to the road on Friday morning.

Warm out today, in the 60s, but supposed to drop tonight and might not even hit 50 tomorrow.  Slight chance of rain tonight, then nice till Saturday......

See everyone later.....

Meat loaf!  Yesssss!  One of everything.

Rearranged some chairs here in my puter room; did some hand laundry; sitting here with my south window open for probably one of the last times - all while on crutches.  Good thing there is no time limit on how fast to get things done.  Crutches are great for opening and closing doors; picking up clothes off the floor; and resting in general.

Tried the hydrocodone.  Must eat when taking it - upsets just about everything.  But I can't do the Tylenol.  I can take one normally and it puts me under for 4 hours.  So just one of these practically makes me quit functioning altogether!  (I am a very sensitive being as you all know!  Shy

Put that bottle away and get out the old ibuprophen.  It takes a little longer, but doesn't mess with my function button.

Hark - a train whistle!  Just my luck - I got sound and no picture.  Normally it is reversed.....Sigh

Pass the ketchup, please....

We have a very good breeze blowing outside at 2:19, so it doesn't feel very warm outside in the sun (at least to me).  Walt is on his way to the library, to return his books, and get new ones.

For the rest of the day, here is our menu:

Meat loaf w/mashed taters, gravy, peas & corn, broccoli w/butter sauce, cornbread, and for dessert:  apple pie and peach cobbler, both fresh out of the oven.

And yes, we are still quite dry here as well.  Although, next Monday and Tuesday, they are saying we will see some rain and possibly thunderstorms rolling in.  I'll believe it when I see it.  The meterologist did say on the noon news, that we haven't had any significant rainfall since May.

Everyone have a good afternoon and take care.  See you all later.

Been a long day here, but abouit bedtime. Paula, glad things went well at Produce Tuesday, and thanks for fixing the food for us.

Q, I never had a trans-oceanic, but have had Philco console radios. That's what got me into getting my ham license in '64. I heard some folks talking, and mentioned it at school the next day. The guy I was talking to knew who I had heard and invited me over to see his ham station, and the rest is history.

Everyone have a great evening

Tom, you certainly never know what an idle conversation can get you into. As I have mentioned, one that began with a comment about not being delayed by a freight train led to marriage for me.

As to getting into ham radio, when I was in high school I considered it--but never could stick with learning the code, so despite my strong interest in electronics (and I still have several ARRL publications) I never got there.

My experience with Philcos was getting other people's table models to work (even when I had only standard value resistors and capacitors to replace Philco's odd valued ones).

We are having cool nights and jsut warm days, with no precipitation;despite the promise of showers early this week it has been dry.

......Another nice Fall day here in Muncie.  To rise to around 68 today.  Lots of sunshine.

Tom.....Again a bit on radios:  20 years ago, I had a {new}, GM automobile and it had a stereo AM radio....Have not seen much of them since.  Anyone have any thoughs on this.  Actually, it did a nice job.  Of course it also had FM stereo, tape, etc....

Trivia:

More on classic console radios back several decades....Quite a few for sure.  My brother was released from the Service in 1946, and he and his bride began to accumulate new furniture, and appliances, to start up housekeeping.

They purchased a new console and brought it to our home until their place was ready.  It was a beautiful new Zenith, light blonde in color, with a pull out section on the top right side....Came out like hinged on it's bottom, and that was the radio section....All kinds of bands.  The face of it looked like a space craft control panel  {for that era}....

The unit had a record player, {Believe they called it the Zenith Cobra tone arm}....It was on the top left side, and it pulled out like a drawer....Down below on one side was record storage and the other bottom space was the big 15" speaker and a wide fabric like multi- band antenna back in that space.  It was a beautiful piece of furniture and worked great...great sound {for that era.}

I actually have found a pic right here on the internet recently of the very same model Zenith radio.  And now....what a shame...Zenith, hardly anyone would know about the {American}, brand.

Jim.....Regarding the Trans oceanic radio.....Just a comment:  55 plus years ago in Korea we found the Trans oceanic unit was the best radio of any to pull in stations from other parts of the world.  They were really great for their time...

Surprise It even beat out a Collins Radio? Huh?

Good Wednesday morning everyone.  Tom, thanks for taking care of breakfast this morning.  Decided to sleep in, and didn't wake up until Trapper the Cat decided it was time to wake up Mama.

Our temp, when I awoke, was 50 degrees.  It is now about 45 degrees.  Going to be another sunshiny day and breezy.  Everyone enjoy your morning and take care.

Q, we had one of those floor model Philcos. had a six band receiver, record player and record storage area along with a 12 inch speaker! It's relatively easy go get a ham ticket nowadays since the code requirement has been done away with.

57 degrees and clear in Carolina. Looks like it's for me to open up. so welcome aboard and enjoy the breakfast bar and fountain soft drinks and juices. Have a great day

Tom.....I thought often of trying for ham license, especially when 2 meter ham became quite popular around here, but never carried thru with it.  Of course I went thru the CB stuff many years ago.

On the Philco console....I remember in my home as I was growing up we had such a "floor model" radio, and if I remember correctly, it also had the short wave band {s}, on it.  That would have been in the late 1930's.

Well, produce went well this morning.  Truck came at 8:45, we got everything situated, and when the ladies came to open up, so we could get the bags, we started making the bags up, and calling names.  I did it sitting down today:  back was really hurting this morning:  felt like someone had put a knife in my back and was twisting it every which way.  So, I didn't stick around for the bread truck today:  came back home, and went to bed for about an hour and a half.  This afternoon, I've managed to do my back exercises, and the back is feeling somewhat better now.

I have our Mexican Fiesta on the serving station:

1.  Burritos (beef, beef & bean, beef enchilada)

2.  Tacos (hard shell and soft shell)

3.  Spanish rice

4.  Enchiladas

5.  Quesadillas

6.  Chimichangas

7.  Empanadas

8.  Chile carne avodadas

We have a current temp of 68 degrees, with sunny skies.  Everyone have a very good afternoon, take care and see you all later.

The one in your backyard, Larry, they needed bottles to package the olive oil.....

Then you weren't very far from our shops!  IIRC, the olive oil place is within the Griffiss Park, same as our shop.

In fact, I think MA&N was down that way that day, too.

Item:  Speaking of audio devices....I remember one fellow had a WIRE  recorder over there....Something we never hear of now.

Today, we have a beautiful but cool start for our day....Was 40 earlier.  But clear skies now, bright sunshine and that's the way it's to be most of this week.  60's for afternoon temps.  No complaints on this kind of weather, now for going into Fall.  One, exception, it's still too dry.

We too had some frost on the yard early this morning.

Good Tuesday morning everyone.  55 degrees, and no sign of any rain coming our way, except a few areas around us may see a sprinkle or two.  This is kind of getting rediculous:  waiting for some significant rainfall, and barely getting drops of rain.  The only good thing is that we've not had the humidity that is 'normal' for us.

Coffee, juices and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go; regular breakfast menu items are on the serving station.

I've already had one phone call this morning, to see what time the Produce truck shows up.  Managed to get the phone on the second ring, before it woke up anyone else.

Guess I'll see you all sometime later on this afternoon.  Everyone enjoy your morning, have a good morning, and take care.

P>S>  Mookie, I've got your coffee mug ready for you.  Brought in a rocker/recliner for you, so you can put your leg up a little bit.

Jim, I know absolutely nothing about short wave broadcast radio, except that it used to make our 40 meter ham band almost useless after sunset. Things are much better there now that most of the BC stuff has been relocated. There was even talk about expanding the band, but for us, nothing happened. Non U S hams got an expansion into what was the U S part of the band, but nothing really new. Take care
