Three H's here in the wilds of northern New York today. All the worse for the firefighters who had to deal with a garage fire.
Since it was the next district over, I headed that way from my shopping trip to see if I could be of assistance. They had it mostly out by the time I got there, but I did get to hear a bit of what happened.
Two youngsters home while mom was at work. Daughter playing with candles in the garage. Candle fell over and lit some trash on fire. Daughter found unmarked jug with liquid in it - figured it might put the fire out. Don't know what was in the jug, but it didn't put the fire out - instead it flared up even worse.
Daughter calls mom at work. "The garage is on fire." Mother is incredulous, tells daughter to dial 9-1-1 and get out of the house.
Somehow the address came up wrong in the computer aided dispatch system and the wrong departments were initially dispatched. That soon got fixed and the fire was then dealt with in short order. Still, it's a total loss, not to mention what the heat did to the neighbor's vinyl siding.
Three lessons - two for the kids, one for mom and dad - don't play with candles, know how and when to dial 9-1-1, and don't store anything in an unmarked container.
Just another day in emergency services.
Time to start getting ready to work on the RR tomorrow. There's a rumor the train might get robbed (three times, no less).

I would like to share our weather of the past two or three days. Yesterday, when Ricki came down she allowed that opeing opening the living room widows windows a little would serve; this morning she opted for no opening to let the breeze in.
Edit--and I thought I had proofread before posting!

I used to like the Chevy Corvair commercials...(yep...I like the Corvair!)
Here is a 1957 Chevy Truck Commercial you may get a kick out of:

Quentin: I remember the 1964 Chevrolet ad filmed out west where the car was placed on a pinnacle of rock with a chopper. Here is the link

Yes Tom....Rex Marshall had that booming voice good for broadcasting.
Just an observation: Believe Chevrolet advertising currently, is so much better now with a new company doing it. They are concentrating on the actual product, and showing it well, as compared back when they were mixing "See the U S A in your Chevrolet", and apple pie, picnics, young people dancing around, and of course Diana Shore's rendition too.....

Yes, the heat continues.....Upon my first look earlier at our instrument this morning it was then at: 77 degrees.....So this will be a hot one.
Waited until 8:15 last evening, {after we got back from a birthday meal for Jean}, to do a mowing. Ended up with it almost dark, not quite, but used the tractor headlights doing the last 3rd of the lawn. Too wet in early morning to do it....Too hot mid day, hence the early evening mowing.
Believe today will be a bit warmer.....Morning paper indicated 96 for the heat of the day.

grampaw pettibone get your PC back?
No, Tom, we haven't yet. And haven't heard from them this morning, so guess they're still running scans, to make sure no more viruses are on it.
The Dare to Care Produce truck came about 8:45 this morning. Didn't have a whole lot for us: potatoes, bags of lettuce mix, heads of iceburg lettuce, ears of corn, plums and watermelons. And they only gave us 15 watermelons. I didn't get one today. Still have some left of the watermelon I got last week.
The truck came before our Dare to Care ladies got there, so we had it outside today. We had everything just about set up, to start bagging, when they got there. And man, was it sticky outside. I was so hot and sticky, that I broke out in a cold sweat. Definitely glad to be back home and in the air conditioning!
I have our Tuesday Mexican Fiesta ready, first round, and it is on the serving station. Just burritos, tacos, and chopped lettuce w/diced tomatoes, along with tortilla chips and the various dips (picante, salsa, and con queso). If anyone would like chimichangas and fajitas added to tonight, just let me know.
Everyone enjoy, have a good afternoon, and take care.
Good morning. 79 deg already, sunny and headed for 96. Sure enuff dog days....

Good Tuesday morning everyone. Dale, I've never been nervous about seeing the doctor, except dentists: don't like going to the dentist.
I woke up at 5 a.m., and Sarah had already gotten called out. So I don't know if she is on the shortline, or in the yard today. Guess I'll find out, whenever she gets home.
Coffee, juices and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go. On the serving station this morning: bagels, bear claws, and BLTs, along with some bacon, eggs and toast, for anyone who doesn't have cholesterol problems.
Everyone have a good morning, and I'll see you all when Produce is over.
cherokee woman I was called back, for my weigh in and BP, put into an exam room, and fell asleep waiting for Doc to come in.

Obviously you're not nervous about seeing a doctor. Good for you!
Murray Quentin...I found this the other day, and since your family station in Pennsylvania was an Esso station, (like my neighbors station in Elizabeth, NJ), thought you'd get a kick out of this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LtFh9Yk574U

Thanks Murray.....Appreciate that. That goes back a ways.
I believe that same fellow later was a major pitch man in Chevrolet commercials.
Evening, everyone. It has been a looonng day here in Louisville. Got an A-OK from the doc this morning (actually, afternoon. I was called back, for my weigh in and BP, put into an exam room, and fell asleep waiting for Doc to come in. He woke me up when he came into the room, about 12:45. Everything is cleared up, except, as I said this morning, still have a little bit of stiffness in the neck.
Called the computer repair shop after I got home. They were doing another scan. So it looks like it'll probably be sometime tomorrow, before we get the call that computer has no viruses on it.
Everyone have a good evening, keep cool, and take care.
rvos1979 MurrayRandy....welcome to Texas! Hope you have a safe stay here on our roads. HOT is the word down here in San Antonio as well. Currently sitting at 94 degrees. I'd have to check my logs to be sure, Murray, but the last time I was down in Texas, was the day after Dallas got a foot of snow. Guess I sure know how to pick the days..... One little complaint I do have about the state, could you make the rest areas a bit bigger and more numerous? Whoever said 'everything's bigger in Texas' had never looked at the state's rest areas.....

Randy, completely understand about the restrooms. Its hard enough to find space for a car...I really feel for you truckers.
Best rest areas (in terms of size and overall niceness) is on I-10 heading west out of San Antonio....new design...much more room...and angle parking for trucks.
Be safe!

rvos1979 Hey Willy, could you please move the heat selector over at weatherliar U from 'blast furnace' to 'warm'? I'd appreciate it....... Mirror says 118 parked just south of Waco, TX, was 101 driving through there and Dallas earlier today, supposed to be there all week. Not all that humid here, though, would actually be somewhat bearable in the shade. I figure I have driven about 1600 miles the last three days, from Indy to the twin cities to Waco, lots of high speed driving. Speaking of high-speed driving, found out a cousin was clocked at about 130MPH while running from the cops, not too smart on his part. Hate to have to make that little problem go away..... Well, dinner, then into the sleeper. See everyone later.....

ModelcarThe main building was a 1920's type gas station building and it was retro-fitted to be this ice cream / sandwich / milkshake shop...
We have a sunshiny day and it is hot.....and the humidity is staying right with us.
Larry, if you would care to see couple of photos of our retro "restaurant", and I think it is first class.....send me a PM and email and I'd be glad to send them.
The main building was a 1920's type gas station building and it was retro-fitted to be this ice cream / sandwich / milkshake shop....{Retro was first class too}, and over the past season they added a brand new section with what looks like two garage overhead doors into a garage.....and a larger kitchen. The new larger section is simply more restaurant space, with lots of retro items inside.
Place is called Cammack Station.
Another plus for some of us: N S Frankfort line passes very close behind it.
Good morning Americans, it's Monday. 78 and fog at present, headed for 94 but no storms called for.
Paula, I hope the dr visit goes well with a good report and that yall get the PC back today.
Nothing else to report. Have a great dayu
ModelcarStopped by our retro "malt shop"...
A fellow in one of the towns along our route opened a 50's themed restaurant - waitress in poodle skirts, appropriate menu, etc. We've gotten together with him to run some "DooWop" trains, which include a stop at his restaurant while we take care of the train mid-trip. They've been very popular and are limited only by the number of customers/riders he can handle in the restaurant at one time.
morning
busy night at work.going to be busy today.better get to bed.
Good Monday morning everyone. Had a pretty nice weekend. But humidity will start to climb today, with a high in the low to mid 90s.
Coffee, juices and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go. Mookie, here's your coffee mug, all ready for you! On the serving station this morning: bagels, bear claws, and BLTs, turkey bacon, sausage, scrambled eggs.
We watched a pretty good movie last night: Head of State, with Chris Rock and Bernie Mack. That was pretty funny!
I go back to the doctor this morning. It's been a little over two weeks, since I went about my back, then the subsequent visit, with the allergic reaction. Everything seems to be cleared up, except still have a little bit of soreness in the neck. Not much, though, so I think that's a good thing!
I'll leave some cold cuts (turkey, roast beef, etc.) for you all for lunch. My appointment is for 10:15, but it'll probably be 11:15, before I get called back, so who knows when I will be home.
Everyone have a good morning, and I'll see you all some time this afternoon. Take care!
Well. It was "I'll scratch your back and you can scratch mine" weekend on the railroad. The crew was short a trainman on Saturday, so I worked even though I wasn't scheduled.
Today we ended up doing some pretty fun(ky) stuff so yesterday's conductor became today's trainman, help me out.
It was also the first time in a while we've done any serious switching-type work. We have several trainman trainees who could have used the experience, but none of them was working - just two "old head" conductors who could do it with their eyes closed (but don't, for obvious reasons).
I'm pooped. Time to clean out the truck and head for bed.
spokyoneI admire Brian(IA) and his weight loss & diet program success. Way to go Brian.
Thanks Bob- I have another 30 pounds to go to get to where I want to be. Until then, I'll probably stay pretty scarce around here- conversations about food tend to make me want to cheat.
