Good morning from Carolina. 69 and clear this lovely daqy.

On this day in history.
In 1989, Hurricane Hugo came ashore early in the morning at Sullivan's Island, near Charleston, South Carolina, with winds near 135 mph and a storm surge up to 20 feet.

Were you there?

Looks like we'll be seeing some rain again today.   Thunder early this morning and just under a half inch of rain in the past 24 hours.

Even though we're coming into fall, the temps have been mild - short sleeve shirt weather by most afternoons.

Took Mom for a ride along The River yesterday, taking some pictures along the way that she can share with her friends when she gets back home.  Think we'll go out again today to visit some spots she knew back in the day.

Tomorrow looks like a trip into the Adirondacks, including a train ride.

Time for a munch.

Bob, I sure was. It doesn't seem lke it has been that long. After nit was gone, I found every pine tree on the place had been stripped of its needles and they looked like they had been through heavy shelling.  It was a time to remember

It's hard to believe that Hurricane Hugo was that long ago.

For our menu for the rest of the day, we'll have what we normally would have had yesterday:  our Mexican Fiesta.

1.  Tacos (soft shell and hard shell)

2.  Burritos (beef, beef & bean, beef enchilada)

3.  Spanish rice

4.  Chimichanga dinner

5.  Quesadillas

All served with a med of shredded lettuce w/diced tomatoes (and onions for those who like them)

We are up to 90 degrees, now at 12:23, going for at least 93 degrees by 5 p.m. or so.  Everyone have a good afternoon, keep cool (if you're in the warm zones) and take care.

Some of you may have seen, on network news a day or two ago,. a report of a wildfire southwest of Salt Lake City. This fire, known locally as the "Machine Gun Fire" was started during machine gun practice at the National Guard Camp in the area. Apparently, a bullet struck a rock, creating a spark which immediately blossomed into a wildfire that consumed more than four thousand acres. It was known that conditions were not safe for the practice, but those with the say-so had ordered it; they now acknowledge that they erred. People living a well-settled area (Herriman) were told to leave their homes, but only three homes were destroyed. Many people were ordered to leave their homes, and those with horses and other animal lfe were able to move their charges to safe areas; so far as I know, there was no loss of any life.

......We are actually getting some rain today....!  Badly needed.  From last night to right now...about .85" of an inch....Need more, but we're glad to receive as much as we have.

No storms with it either, as I see places north of us had.

Humidity is high, and temps probably {haven't looked for a while}, mid 70's, but A/C is running anyway.  Keeps the humidity down, and it's to be a very hot one here tomorrow.

Did have 90 plus yesterday afternoon and that prompted us to close the windows.

We've got 64 degrees here in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and I think this afternoon we had gotten at least 3/4 of an inch of rain in just under two hours.

I went to see my doctor this morning for my annual physical exam, and for the most part, he told me that he thinks my health is really pretty good. My blood pressure was 112/60, and his nurse told me that that is perfect.

I am waiting for a professional pest control expert to call on me this week. I may have a problem with mice in this old house of mine, which had originally been built before 1900. I don't know for sure what I am dealing with, but I have outruled bats and squirrels.

....A little weather trivia:

Jean and I are going thru "stuff", and "sorting" what should be disposed of...etc....Came across some calendars that I had recorded all kinds of daily stuff...

1993....here in Muncie, 9-22, we had our first frost.

2010  "        "        "       yesterday, 9-21 it was 90 plus degrees....Today we've been receiving some on & off rain, with temps in mid 70's.   A/C on to keep humidity down.

And tomorrow, the forecast is 95 for Indianapolis....Similar here I suppose.  Sure shows a different September this year.

Johnny, if they were using live ammo in a machine gun, every 8th round in a belt is a tracer rd        . That is probably what set the fire . I set the woods on fire once using unmarked tracer in my M1.

Still under the weather a bit. I need to do some grocery shopping, but just don't feel up to it.

Good Thursday morning, and welcome to the first day of autumn.  Here is Louisville, we have a current temp if the mid 70s, going for a high of 100 degrees again today.  I think this will be the 83rd straight day with temps 90 and above for our area.  Breaking records set back in 1895.  The good thing is we don't have the humidity to go with these temps; so at least it is bearable to be outside.

Coffee, juices and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go, and breakfast is on the warmer/serving station.

Trapper the Cat let me sleep until 6:34, when he decided to wake me up.  He will jump up on the bed, and come walk across my pillow, until I wake up.  (Or else he'll try to much on my hair.)

Everyone have a good day, and take care.

....First day of Fall for us is starting out with a very nice day.  But it is to be a very warm one.  Sunny now...shining in my east office window here at home.  A/C running....A bit unusual for late Sept.  Although, even Oct. can be nice here too.....

Some  green grass is trying to come back on our yard after we've received .85" of rain last 36.....It will take more, but it certainly did help.  Lawn care people were here a few days ago to apply treatment, but decided against it until we get some rain, so now perhaps they can apply that treatment.  Hope so.  Like green better than brown.

Edit:  Did our posters see the rescue might be going faster than they thought possible for the Chilean trapped miners.  I believe several large bores are under way in the effort.  That is quite a task, of drilling that diameter bore down 2,000 ft. thru solid rock.

The rescure shaft that was put down back in our home area several years ago to create an emergency escape opening for those 9 for 9 miners in Somerset Co., Pennslvania, was successful, but the bore depth there was 240 ft...!  They did a 30" bore to get that job done.

Tom, maybe what I'm fixing for supper tonight will help you feel a little bit better.  I'm fixing chicken and dumplins for supper.  It'll be ready in a couple of hours.  For anyone who doesn't want chicken and dumplins, there's also pork chop abracadbra in the two large Crock Pots.  Freshly made garden salad and Caesar salad in the fridge and cooler.

One set of exercises down, another to go.  After I did the exercises, ate a turkey sandwich, and took a nap.  Bad thing is, when I awoke from nap, had a very bad headache.  Rolled some Head On across my forehead, and headache is beginning to subside.

Looked at the  temp a few ago, up to about 98 degrees.  Maybe(?) we won't break another record for this date today.  Everyone enjoy your supper, have a good evening and take care.

Thanks, Tom, for the reminder about tracer bullets. Having never used any, I did not think of them at all, even though this is much more reasonable than a bullet's striking a rock and creating a spark. As of this noon, the fire is not out completely, but it is believed to be under control. Now, if we had a good rain--but a rain capable of drowning the fire completely would cause another problem: flooding. Think gully washer, trash mover, frog strangler--and with much of the vegetative cover removed by the fire, the mountain side would be subject to having gullies created, and the homes that escaped the fire would be flooded with mud. The town of Herriman does have a supply of sandbags ready to be rushed to places where they would be needed; may they have enough.

Morning temperature in the low fifties and rising tothe low seventies today.

May you and Paula find releif from whatever it is that ails you.

My niece Patty, her husband Ski and baby Cassy were in Charleston when Hugo came ashore. This is her first hand account.

Hey Uncle Bob,Hugo??GEEZE I dont hardly think about that anymore but it was Quite the Experience. It was Scarey and Exciting and tireing and Long and Hot and...The day it was coming in Ski came home from work and we boarded up as much of the windows and glass on our home as we could.Pulled the Bronco 2 up next to the house and tried to secure what we could. Of course we both worked for the shipyard so all our stuff got done last minute as he was leadman and i was a laborer, and we had Lots of getting s**t back together so the ships could either go back out to sea or I guess i dont remeber what else the ships did?? But we probably had 3or 4 ships that we were working on and tore apart in 1 way or another And machinery had to be put back together I recall. So back to the house we just stayed inside when it started coming through other wise it was a big Beer Drink Block Party for the first 24 hours then everyone pulled resourses together I only had Cassy at the time and she was about 6 ot 7 months. After we couldnt stay out side anymore we went in and hunkered down in the middle of our house. I remember at 1 point going into the intermost part of the house closet with cassy(mind you she slept through most of it as she was just a baby)Then when the Eye came through it was pretty erie and Ski went out side and of course I had to also for a little while.  It was Pitch Black and we could see other neighbors out with flashlights and the calmness was probably 20 or30 minutes. Then the wind started blowing again except for in the opposite direction. Then after the 2nd part of it went through and we went out side the next morning it was Horrific site to see. Trees uprooted and laying on our Dear friend Doris Goods arcross the street. We lost our carport and the back roofing on our addition. And all you heard from that morning on for weeks were chains saws.Trying to call a few people so they knew we were ok and my dad got through to us and ended up sending a generator via fedex.Which took a few days. Ice was a hot commodity as it was hot and no power to be able to make ice. For me i needed to keep Cassys formula cold after i opened a can so people were Very generous with there ice for that. And all ( our whole block) our refrigerators were defrosting so we started all getting together and cooking everything on gas grills.I think it was 10 to 12 days befor we got power back.Never been so GRATEFUL for electricity : ) !! I guess I could go on but you asked me for a summery and thats as short as I can get. The End : )

Good Friday morning.  Joe, thanks so very much for taking care of breakfast this morning.  And thanks for your well wishes.  The headache is much better this morning.  With everything so dry, guess it could be allergy-related, or sinus-related.  Tom, hope you're feeling some better this morning, too.

We started out with 80 degrees here this morning, at 6:00 a.m.  EDT.  Going for a high of 93 today.  Yesterday's high made it to 97.  That was still a record high for that date.

Bob, that was an interesting account from your niece.  Sounds like a lot of first hand accounts I heard back in 74, when the tornadoes came through Kentucky.

Everyone have a very good morning, and I'll see you later.  After Walt gets up, and the doctor's office opens, we're going to get our flu shots.  Getting them early this year.

.....Our morning began here earlier at 74 degrees....Heat has passed on to the east.  Prejected high for us today is 81.

Windy now and sunny.  No more rain, but could see some later during the day.

Flu shots...Yes, important in our opinion, and we received them last week at our family Dr's. office.

Need a bit more rain to push along the regreening of our generally nice lawn, now trying to recover from the extreme dry spell.

This morning, once again....windows open, and A/C shut down.  might be the end of it for this season.

Any one using Medicare Drug plan, should take a look at the morning articles on pricing for the coming year....Double digit increases in many premiums coming.  Shocking to me, as I read the article, was the plan we're with will have a 11% drop in premium....!!!  That's unusual and shocking....And we believe it's one of the better plans.  Have been satisfied now for several years with it....

A lovely start to the day - warm (already in the 70's) with just a chance of showers.

Had a beautiful day yesterday for our "colors" foray into the Adirondacks.  An early fog lifted in time to give us nice views from the train, and the drive up to Big Moose and then on to the Adirondack Museum (well worth the price of admission) was spectacular.  The colors are currently somewhere above 50%, so it'll get better this weekend, but may be past peak by the following weekend.

Mom used to sew a lot, so she's helping me lay out my new RR vest.  There's a couple of things in the pattern that are above and beyond my meager ability to sew...

Breakfast is out of the way, and the birds are fed (it's a good show, even though I normally don't feed them this early), so on to other projects!

Paula; cats are indeed  odd people .  Pookster is Shirls cat. When she gets up , we should get up also.  If we don't , she gets in her face and hollers.  2:00am is not a good time to get up ever since a wounded  bird was brought in as a gift to us as an inducement to get her some food.  Pookster is precious, but not at 2:00am. HEH HEH.

Jim & Shirl, you've got that right!  Quentin, we got our flu shots, and so far, no hurting arms.

Sarah and I just got in a little bit ago, went with her to get some errands taken care of.  While we were out, the area we were in got a nice rain shower.  Walt said we even got some rain here at home, but no more than about a tenth of an inch.

Our Friday Fish Fry is now ready, and on the serving station.  All the regular list of fish, and, of course, the regular menu of side dishes and desserts.

Everyone enjoy, have a good evening and take care.

Good Saturday morning.  Joe, thanks for taking care of breakfast again this morning.  You all have a safe trip there and back!

Temp this morning, when I awoke at 5:30, was 66 degrees.  It's now down to 61, when I heard the last update about 15 minutes ago.  Our projected high for today:  low to mid 70s!

Everyone have a great day, and take care.  See you all later.

.....Not quite as warm here this morning as Lousiville, but it was around 53 when I looked at 7 something.

It is a real nice day here though, it's warmed up to be comfortable, but cooler than yesterday but nice.  Blue skies.

Trivia:

Jean and I did  something a bit different this morning.....She and I {and pup}....were scheduled to have our portrait done at a local studio.  well, we actually got it accomplished.  "Ella" must have thought she was going to the "Vet" at first, and acted like it.  But upon us getting in position to have this accomplished, she seemed to realize this was not the Vet's office.  So in about a week we'll see if any of the shots are acceptable to us to have printed up.  "Pup" is Ella....and a very minitature Dauchshund...black in color with a few well placed brown spots.  And of course, one of the family.  {What a beautiful large dia. lens on that digital camera....}.

Quentin, we had a dog like that. One of her early visits to the vet was quite painful for her, and immediately after going in every time after that, she would turn back to the door, saying, in effect, "Let's go home now." While waiting to settle bill after the visit, I never had to hold her leash, for she would more or less plaster herself to the exit door.

Paula, we swing more than you do. This morning's temperature was in the fifties, and it is expected to about eighty this afternoon. Summer is dying slowly here.

The "Machine Gun Fire" is now declared to have been extinguished.

There was another fire, down Provo way, which also seems to have been taken care of; I have not seen anything about it for a couple of days.
