And of course that leaves me with the burning question: why can't anything like that ever happen in Omaha??

Be very careful what you wish for Willy.  In my experience hoping for weather like that is like sitting down to catch up with a relative you forgot why you 'lost touch with'.  It doesn't take long to get your fill and then things just keep on comin'...

I know, and I understand what you're saying, but I'm fascinated by extreme weather and there's no changing that. Part of it just has to do with the fact that it's very interesting to study these events and their causes, although I enjoy the weather itself to.

Hey Dan. Barbara & I are heading up your way for the fly in. We will visit family over in Princeton, then on Thursday we will set up between route 44 & the RR tracks between Ripon and Fisk and watch the planes come in.

I think I know roughly where you are speaking of.  I might have to make a small trip SW.

Larry - I'm very sorry to hear about your mother. You and your family are in my prayers.

I was perusing some of the rainfall totals from last night, and I think I found a winner. Midway Airport in Chicago got 9.09" (yes, that is supposed to be a nine) over the course of about 10 hours. That's very nearly an inch per hour for ten hours. And of course that leaves me with the burning question: why can't anything like that ever happen in Omaha??

At 7:30 this morning we had 80 degrees.....Believe that's tops this season for our starting temp at that time of day.  Humidity is still here too, but a bit of breeze also.  Plenty of sunshine.

Sounds like you'll be watching float planes only, Bob... we're currently "home", where it's supposed to stay nice and dry today.  Heading to God's country tonight.

They could probably use a load of gravel or two.  Up this way, the EAA folks are buying up every woodchip they can from all the landscaping places.  There's thousands of airplane-campers and vehicle-campers coming to town next week...all heading for wet, mucky grass.

Sorry to hear about your Mom Larry.  Here's hoping she'll beat it and be strong.

Brian,
We got another 2" last night.  There are some streets that the water simply won't go down any more as all the retention ponds are full, the lake and river are within about 16" of going over their banks, and most yards in town have standing water in them.  At EAA there are many areas that have standing water and are closed off to access.  A comment was overheard about the old Wal*Mart on one of the news stations:
"It's a good thing that the store has moved, otherwise we'd have nowhere to park any vehicle larger than a pickup truck."

That lot is chock full of 1 ton pickups, 5th wheel trailers, and motorhomes/coach busses.

Might get more rain today.  Another 2 or 3 inches...things could get real, real ugly in a few spots.  Off to make Sprout some breakfast and heading to the Farmer's Market before meeting a friend for lunch.

Been there, done that, Dan- about 30 years ago we spent the night in a little pop-up camper in the middle of an alfalfa field near Oshkosh.  Stormed all night; the next morning you didn't dare walk around with good shoes on, and people were burying their vehicles up to the axles.

Good Saturday morning, everyone.  When I first awoke at 6:30 this morning, we had a temp of 86 degrees,   now the temp is 83.  But we'll be getting up to 98 degrees, with a heat index at noon right at 100 degrees.  By about 7 p.m., heat index is supposed to be about 106 degrees.

Coffee, juices, other morning beverages (including hot water for hot tea), are fresh and ready to go.  On the warmer/serving station this morning:  bagels, bear claws, and an assortment of doughnuts, along with traditional country breakfast fare such as biscuits/gravy, eggs, country fried steak, sliced tomatoes from the garden, grits, toast, fried taters.

Everyone have a  very good day, keeping cool, staying safe and taking care of yourselves.

Larry, I'm very sorry to hear about your Mom.  We have a friend, who is 87, and he was just diagnosed with colon cancer about a month ago.  May your Mom do as well as he's doing.  Will be keeping her in my thoughts and prayers, as well as the rest of your family.

Larry, so disturbing to hear the news. Like Johnny said, if they caught it early enough, she will be OK. A frend of mine has had it twice and is still going strong. Be blessed, and she is in my prayers

Just got off the phone with my sister - they've found that my mother (84 this year) has colon cancer.

Larry, I am sorry to hear that about your mother. I know something about the situation, and trust that hers was discovered much sooner than mine was. May all go well with her.

Whooooeeeee!  Tornado warning for NYC.  The Weather Channel is going berserk!  They don't get this excited about a Force 5 hurricane!

Just got off the phone with my sister - they've found that my mother (84 this year) has colon cancer.  We're waiting for word as to what's going on - she may have gone under the knife this afternoon (Phoenix time).   At this point we're not making "flying trips" out there (this sister is in Denver, my other sister lives in Phoenix and is our POC for "mom" stuff like this) until we get an idea of what's going on.

Hope for the best.

Well - the truck is inspected, the bike is ready for the 5K fun run tomorrow (I'll be riding, the participants will be walking and/or running), and the laundry from working on the railroad the past couple of days is about done.  Time to call my sister and find out what she wants.

Now I know what a blast furnace feels like......

109 on the mirror here in Troy, IL, just 18 miles from St Louis, so it is about 99 ambient.  Truck A/C is running full bore, both units, and keeping up fine.  Heard a report in Milwaukee last night of them getting 7 inches of rain in an hour, opened up a big sinkhole near downtown.  Might have to go that way tomorrow....

Fish fry, please, then bed, then go switch a bunch of trailers tomorrow......

mudchicken
The blue frost gatorade has started to tinge this chicken's feathers from dirty/brown/nondescript to an odd shade of blue

Mudchicken, there are other Gatorade flavors you could try for awhile.  Keep a variety of different Gatorade flavors on hand.

Didn't really find out anything at the doctor's.  He gave me a prescription for different muscle relaxers, and I have already had one, about a half hour, 45 minutes ago.

I have our Friday Fish Fry (actually, fish grill tonight), going and the first round is on the warmer/serving station, along with all the regular side dishes.

Dessert:  Apple,  blueberry, cherry, peach and strawberry cobblers, and pecan pie, all served with ice cream!!!!

Think our official high for today is/was 95, but with the heat index, it certainly does feel like it's at least 100 degrees, if not more out.  Definitely glad to be back home , and in the air conditioning!!

The blue frost gatorade has started to tinge this chicken's feathers from dirty/brown/nondescript to an odd shade of blue. I think the Weatherliar U.  weather machine got stuck on blowdrier after Willie let the incoming freshmen touch it. (clouds up every afternoon, makes lotsa noise and nothing happens)

Back to the roar of F16's on the local airbase today, flipping manhole covers and fishing for Brown Trout (PDN probably doesn't miss this).

Is DiningCar here in Colorado this week with the other Santa Fe fans?

Good Friday morning, everyone.  It is going to be another very hot and miserable day for most of the country.  We are currently at 83 degrees, going for a very uncomfortable 98 degrees, with a heat index of about 105 degrees.

Coffee, juices and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go.  Regular breakfast is on the warmer/serving station.

I am going back to my GP this morning.  For the past couple of weeks, I've been experiencing some pain in the left side of my neck.  Going to try to find out what is going on.  Tired of slooowly moving my neck to the left.

Everyone have a good morning, keep as cool as possible, and take care.  See you all sometime later this afternoon.  Could one of you start the Fish Fry for lunch for me?  Thank you!

My sweet Driver took me trackside for 3 coal trains (just about all at the same time).  We left the air running - you all will find out why about tomorrow or Sat.  Gah!

Anyway, I have to go down there tomorrow and scoop some ballast under the #6 track - one of the two south bounds.  They didn't look like they had any under a section of track right in front of us.  Really squished!  Did look like a fun ride, however....whee!

.......Wow, business in here is really slack...!

Only thing I can add:  It's still high with humidity here, and the .75" of rain this afternoon didn't help that situation any.  Very warm yet, but nice and bright outside.

....Well, it's just "hot" outside: 92, but....the humidity must be extremely high because it feels like being in an oven.  Did see a 74 figure for humidity this morning, but can't say what it is now.

Talk of those Asian foods.....Wow.....That would make me run...."away", as fast as I could.

Anyone know what Kimshee is ?  {spelling?}.  Most awful stuff I can remember smelling......In Asia.

Kimchi?

Great stuff...I like Korean food......Nice and spicy

Thanks Murray, now we know how to spell it....At least I'm no where near it.

Mookie

oops....

94 with about that much humidity for today so - watermelon and choc cake!  I'm set! Mischief

Ding, Ding, Ding!  We have a winner!!  Mookie, you've got it.  Went out this morning, and got a whole bunch of watermelons, came back and put them all on ice!!  Just got the chocolate cake out of the oven (thank you, Dan, for that new stove and the humongous oven, where I can bake a whole sheet cake. )

And for anyone who doesn't want to just eat watermelon and chocolate cake, we also have grilled sirloin steaks w/grilled 'baked' taters and a nice, cold garden salad.

Everyone enjoy, have a good afternoon, and I'll see you all after a bit.  Need to go rest my back, now.

I thought I would share one of our local weather forecasts for today:

Today
Abundant sunshine
High 94°

Ricki is getting accustomed to riding up and down between our living room level and our bedroom level.

The new coat of slurry seal is now on our street. The street is still closed to traffic. I trust that when I come back from seeing a doctor late this afternoon I will be able to drive onit.
