Slightly off topic.  Saw a report that for the last reporting quarter Network Rail in the UK had 49 persons hit by trains. Maybe people in the US are actually more aware of trains than the UK?

We're in "DUCK!" mode right now, as in batten down hatches and take cover.  I can already hear lots of bumps and rumbles, and it's not even here yet.

The last storm caused significant damage around here.  Hopefully this one won't.

Chinese sounds terrific!

Here in Omaha, we're hot and humid because we often have south winds, which bring moisture north from the Gulf of Mexico.

Okay, thanks Willy. I would not have guessed you'd get Gulf air in Omaha.

Hot and humid today. Not much chance of rain over the next few days, which is too bad. I could use another good thunderstorm, and I imagine the farmers would be happy with a little more rain. Things seem to dry out very quickly when the heat cranks up.

Hey Willy, can you answer a question for me? I'm out here on the coast, surrounded by water. When we have hot summer weather, our humidity is low. On the other hand, you're in a much drier climate, but you have high humidity during the summer. Why isn't it the other way around? Anyone else know?

Dale,

Looking at a map, it appears you have the Coast Mountains just off to your east, am I right? You probably sometimes experience downslope flow off those mountains, in which air descends from the mountains, and becomes warmer and drier as it descends. Thus, you end up with hot temperatures, but low humidity. This would occur when your winds are out of the east, or from the same direction as the higher terrain.

On the other hand, when you have west winds, there will be upslope flow. The west winds will carry moisture off the Pacific Ocean, so you'll have more humidity. However, upslope flow creates clouds due to the fact that the air has to get lifted up and over the mountains. Thus, west winds should bring you humid air, but also cooler temperatures due to the clouds and associated precipitation.

Keep in mind that I've determined all of this without really knowing much about your local climate, so I could be off the mark. However, it's an educated guess, which should be accurate if I've made the correct assumptions.

Here in Omaha, we're hot and humid because we often have south winds, which bring moisture north from the Gulf of Mexico.

Good Wednesday morning, everyone.  Well, we had a little bit of rain last night.  Not a whole lot, but just enough to water the flowers and tomato plants.  Our high yesterday was about 92 degrees, probably will be about the same today, with a chance of some more rain/storms coming in sometime this afternoon.

Coffee, juices and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go.  On the warmer/serving station this morning:  bagels, bear claws, turkey bacon, sausage, fresh fruit (cantaloupe, watermelon, kiwi, papaya, strawberries, bananas).

Sarah left out about 4:30 this morning, working the Q510.  She had to be there at 5 a.m.  Not sure when we'll see her back home, maybe sometime tomorrow.

Well, all the medicine I'm now taking seems to be starting to work.  Although, my neck is a little stiff this morning.  Guess it is due to all the humidity.  Either that, or I slept a little crooked last night.

Everyone have a good morning, keep cool and take care.

Peace be with you. 74 and clear in Carolina just after sunrise. It is supposed to get up to the mid 90s with high humidity later today, but not sure of the hot index.

Last nights storm came and went with nary a whisper here. We got some rain, but the real rock and roll passed to the south. For all the watches and warnings, there wasn't even a peal of thunder.

I listened to CSX try to get train 171 to Charleston last night. Something was making a squealing dragging noise that was reported by the public. They had to stop and walk the train in the rain. 26 cars back, they found and disconnected a stuck brake. Then, after they got to pulling again, the second engine in the consist started acting up. I reckon they made it, but they just may still be out there somewhere. I use my 2 meter ham transceiver to listen to the RR, but the antenna came down in a storm and is entirely too low to be of any real use. One day, I will get it back up to 90 feet and should be able to hear at least 30 miles one way.

That's it for the morning news. Everyone take care

Tom

Some four-wheeler in Streator, IL, last night found out I have good brakes, after she pulled out of a gas station in front of me.

A motorist in an SUV pulled almost the same stunt with a fire truck in VA.  The fire truck swerved and was hit by the SUV.  Unfortunately the truck rolled over causing the death of the two firefighters on board.  They were responding with lights and siren to a report of a house fire with someone trapped.  RIP brothers.

We seem to have some heavy weather to the west and south of us with all manner of watches and warnings. It looks like a rough night ahead. The weather radio is using a computer generated voice that is stacato and feels like it should be asking to be taken to my leader. Lotsa noise probably headed our way too.

We got a little bit of rain about a half hour ago.  Not a whole lot, but now we shouldn't have to water the flowers and tomato plants tonight.

Johnny, I think that is one of the meds I was given a prescript for.

I have replenished everything on the warmer/serving station for tonight.  Hope you all enjoy.  Uh, need to run:  weather radio is going nuts.

Good Tuesday morning, everyone.  Johnny, thanks for your message.  I'm now also on an antibiotic, along with a couple of tubes of antibiotic cream.  Hopefully, we'll get everything cleared up.  And, with the antibiotic, I can't have any milk or dairy products for awhile, as long as I'm on the antibiotic.  So, no bowl of cereal in the mornings.

That sounds something like Ciprofloxacin you are taking. I am having to take it again, since one of my problems from last fall had not been cleared up (I wish my doctor had addressed this about four months ago; he told me I could stop taking the Cipro after I went home from the hospital in January). I have to take it twice a day, and ingesting calcium within two hours after or within six hours before is forbidden. So, I eat breakfast (bowl of non-sugared cereal) at least two hours after I get up.

Still no rain around our house; yesterday afternoon, there was quite a bit in the Oquirrh Mountains, which are west of us.

Good afternoon all. Paula, I am sorry to hear about your trouble and the dearth of watermelons. Bring back the watermelon man!

88 and sunny at present. We had two thunderstorms last night. The second one woke me up around 0400. Both very noisy with around a half inch of rain total.

Take care of yourself CW, and c u for supper.

You're welcome, Joe.  Man, but it has been sloooow in here this morning!  Produce went well this morning.  We served 59 people, and when we finished, the only thing left was a few packages of baby spinach, and heads of iceburg lettuce.   We did find out why we haven't been getting any watermelon this summer:  the driver said he 'doesn't have room in the truck for watermelons'.  This truck is the same size they have always been.  A few of us think it is the driver, who doesn't want watermelons in the truck.

Our regular Tuesday Mexican Fiesta is now on the warmer/serving station:

Burritos:  beef, beef & bean, beef enchilada and Baja burrito

Tacos:  soft shell and hard shell

Chimichangas, Fajitas, Enchiladas, Quesadillas dinners served with a bed of chopped lettuce w/chopped tomatoes

And we also have tortilla chips with all the different sauces:  picante, salsa, and con queso.

Everyone have a good afternoon, keep cool and take care.

Sorry to hear that you, too, have trouble with side effects. Ricki really has to watch out about them, since many of the medicines she is told she should take may have bad side effects--some of which she already has trouble with and she certainly does not want to have them made any worse. She has taken to looking new medicines up on the internet to see what side effects they may have.

Still hot (ninety plus) and dry, though we are promised thundershowers through Friday. Without showers, lightning can start fires which need human effort to put out.

We have a current temp in the mid to upper 70s, going again for a high of 90 to 92, with the possibility of stray showers/thundershowers.  not supposed to be anything too severe, though, so that's good.

Everyone have a good morning, and I'll be back after I get through with Tuesday Produce.

Afternoon, everyone.....

Some four-wheeler in Streator, IL, last night found out I have good brakes, after she pulled out of a gas station in front of me.  Anti-lock in tractor worked, trailer didn't, IL highway 18 now has 8 new black marks on it......

Killing time in Oak Creek, WI, have to wait till tomorrow morning to deliver the rest of the beer I have, would not have made it there today anyway.  Back to dinking around on the Internet....

Sorry about  not getting back in here before now.  I had to go back to the doctor this morning.  Having a side effect that wasn't too good.

On the warmer/serving station you will find:

1.  Leftover meat loaf, green beans and mashed taters from yesterday, along with garden salad and your choice of fresh-from-the-oven cornbread or buttermilk biscuits.

2.  Grilled sirloin steak w/garden salad and the above mentioned sides.

Everyone have a good afternoon, and take care.

When I was in USAF tech school, it was not uncommon for the coffee drinkers to use the drinking glasses for their coffee instead of the cups provided for that purpose.

Larry, this reminds me that, along with occasionally drinking coffee from beakers (in the Science Hall), I would, from time to time, drink coffee at supper--out of one of the thick drinking glasses on the table. As I poured my coffee, the college president's son, Bob, (he was a boarding student), would say to me, "Younger, that's not Pyrex," and I would reply, "I know," and continue. I never broke a glass.

The coffee was made once a day, for breakfast, and some of what was left over was taken to the bookstore, and sold during the day. On one occasion, another boy slipped some salt into Bob's coffee that he had bought, and he was irritated. I had prepared some alum in Freshman Chemistry lab, Bob asked for it, slipped some into the other boy's coffee--and the coffee was potable!

Once, when I was back in the kitchen, I found out what was wrong with the coffee--I watched one of the cooks put some kind of coffee extender into the pot.

On our vintage destroyer we had ceramic coffee cups for milk & coffee. Our "dishes" were tin trays. We had an automatic dishwasher. It used steam and hot water as the baskets moved along a short conveyor.

Good morning. 79 and clear in Carolina. We had a bodacious noisy storm pass through around midnight. Got some rain and a lot of noise. High today expected in the mid nineties with around 80% humidity. Another uncomfortable one.

For now, I'm gonna grab breakfast and back to the rack. Everyone take care

Good Monday morning, everyone.  It seems like a very interesting conversation was going on in here, overnight!  Welcome back, Dale, haven't seen you in here in a lonnng time.  Glad to see you in last night.

Coffee, juices and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go, including whatever flavor Gatorade Mr. Mudchicken would like for today/this week.

Regular breakfast menu is ready and on the warmer/serving station:  selection runs from bagels/bear claws to pancakes/waffles.  Fresh fruit, also.

We're having a 'cool down' around here today:  current temp in the mid to upper 70s, and our projected high for today:  90 degrees.   Everyone have a good morning, keep safe and take care.  If anyone has any suggestions for lunch/dinner menu, just let me know.
