Some four-wheeler in Streator, IL, last night found out I have good brakes, after she pulled out of a gas station in front of me.

A motorist in an SUV pulled almost the same stunt with a fire truck in VA.  The fire truck swerved and was hit by the SUV.  Unfortunately the truck rolled over causing the death of the two firefighters on board.  They were responding with lights and siren to a report of a house fire with someone trapped.  RIP brothers.

Hot and humid today. Not much chance of rain over the next few days, which is too bad. I could use another good thunderstorm, and I imagine the farmers would be happy with a little more rain. Things seem to dry out very quickly when the heat cranks up.

Hey Willy, can you answer a question for me? I'm out here on the coast, surrounded by water. When we have hot summer weather, our humidity is low. On the other hand, you're in a much drier climate, but you have high humidity during the summer. Why isn't it the other way around? Anyone else know?

Peace be with you. 74 and clear in Carolina just after sunrise. It is supposed to get up to the mid 90s with high humidity later today, but not sure of the hot index.

Last nights storm came and went with nary a whisper here. We got some rain, but the real rock and roll passed to the south. For all the watches and warnings, there wasn't even a peal of thunder.

I listened to CSX try to get train 171 to Charleston last night. Something was making a squealing dragging noise that was reported by the public. They had to stop and walk the train in the rain. 26 cars back, they found and disconnected a stuck brake. Then, after they got to pulling again, the second engine in the consist started acting up. I reckon they made it, but they just may still be out there somewhere. I use my 2 meter ham transceiver to listen to the RR, but the antenna came down in a storm and is entirely too low to be of any real use. One day, I will get it back up to 90 feet and should be able to hear at least 30 miles one way.

That's it for the morning news. Everyone take care

Tom

Good Wednesday morning, everyone.  Well, we had a little bit of rain last night.  Not a whole lot, but just enough to water the flowers and tomato plants.  Our high yesterday was about 92 degrees, probably will be about the same today, with a chance of some more rain/storms coming in sometime this afternoon.

Coffee, juices and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go.  On the warmer/serving station this morning:  bagels, bear claws, turkey bacon, sausage, fresh fruit (cantaloupe, watermelon, kiwi, papaya, strawberries, bananas).

Sarah left out about 4:30 this morning, working the Q510.  She had to be there at 5 a.m.  Not sure when we'll see her back home, maybe sometime tomorrow.

Well, all the medicine I'm now taking seems to be starting to work.  Although, my neck is a little stiff this morning.  Guess it is due to all the humidity.  Either that, or I slept a little crooked last night.

Everyone have a good morning, keep cool and take care.

Bring galoshes, ponchos, and sunblock.  You'll need all 3 today and probably the sunblock for the rest of the week.

Dale,

Looking at a map, it appears you have the Coast Mountains just off to your east, am I right? You probably sometimes experience downslope flow off those mountains, in which air descends from the mountains, and becomes warmer and drier as it descends. Thus, you end up with hot temperatures, but low humidity. This would occur when your winds are out of the east, or from the same direction as the higher terrain.

On the other hand, when you have west winds, there will be upslope flow. The west winds will carry moisture off the Pacific Ocean, so you'll have more humidity. However, upslope flow creates clouds due to the fact that the air has to get lifted up and over the mountains. Thus, west winds should bring you humid air, but also cooler temperatures due to the clouds and associated precipitation.

Keep in mind that I've determined all of this without really knowing much about your local climate, so I could be off the mark. However, it's an educated guess, which should be accurate if I've made the correct assumptions.

Here in Omaha, we're hot and humid because we often have south winds, which bring moisture north from the Gulf of Mexico.

We're in "DUCK!" mode right now, as in batten down hatches and take cover.  I can already hear lots of bumps and rumbles, and it's not even here yet.

The last storm caused significant damage around here.  Hopefully this one won't.

Slightly off topic.  Saw a report that for the last reporting quarter Network Rail in the UK had 49 persons hit by trains. Maybe people in the US are actually more aware of trains than the UK?

I dunno. Based on what I see when I'm trackside, I don't think people here are particularly aware of trains either. Actually, I think plenty of people are aware of trains... they just choose to ignore them.

Good Thursday morning, everyone.  Joe, thanks for taking care of fixing the coffee, juice, and the cinnamon rolls.  Those rolls look very good this morning!

I don't recall our current temp, but when I stepped out the front door, to get the  paper, it is bluck.  Very humid and warm.  Our high today is to be back up between 91 and 93, with a 30% chance of some showers/storms.  Tomorrow, they're predicting a high of 89 for us, with a little less humidity.

Everyone have a good morning, take care and I'll see you all later.

Well, I've done a couple of small walks this morning, and have done a couple of chores around the house.  Made myself some tuna salad for sandwiches.

Here is what I've come up with for our Cafe menu for the rest of the day:

1.  Vegetable beef soup w/cornbread and tossed salad

2.  Sloppy joes w/tossed salad and, if anyone wants, you could fix yourself a sandwich to go with the soup.

3.  Tuna salad sandwiches w/tossed garden salad

Everyone enjoy your afternoon, and take care.

.....This is the nicest day we've had for sometime.....Sunshine and some white puffy clouds.  But the important part is:  Lower humidity...!  It's been a while we've had it as comfortable as today.....

Windows are open.

Just returned from our local restaurant, Bruner's....the one facing the double track E & W  CSX main....And got to see a W B mixed frieght with 6 engines....!  Why 6 power units in this flat country is beyond me.  But it's what we fans like to see.  Many tank cars on this one.

Afternoon all.....

Taking it easy today, working on my paper mill layout, now have about 90% of the trackwork done, need to finish the switches for the remaining spurs (Micro Engineering switches need to be detailed, then figure out how I want to angle the tracks for the pulpwood and chemical areas).  Wiring has begun, though I think I will prop the layout on it's side to wire, I don't care for hot solder on me.....

Went to the first day of our county fair last night, got a free meal out of the deal, courtesy of the parents, and met our new Little King and Queen of the fair.  My mother started this event three years ago as a way to get the 4-7 year-old kids involved in the fair, and it has taken off.  Sat next to the Little King at dinner, very nice young man, and a talker, too!

Well, lunch, then do some more work on the layout.......

Thanks for traffic "heads up" Joe......Would be nice to see more traffic back on our double track E & W  CSX line thru here.  Doesn't seem to be near as much as former Conrail had.....Back then it was quite busy.

Day four of surveying in a drainage canyon in Colorado Springs. Friday can't get over fast enough. Think I might just jump in a drum full of BenGay.

Enountered one very large buck (deer) on the other side of the creek today. Didn't seem to concerned about us. Wondr if he is sharing the canyon with Sow Bear and her  two cubs. (we've seen the footprints, but not them)

Good Friday morning everyone.  Tom, thanks for coming in early and fixing breakfast.  Did you make those doughnuts, or go to the bakery?  Whichever, they sure do look good, along with the rest of the breakfast.

We have sunny, partly cloudy skies this morning, with a temp in the mid to upper 60s!  Much lower humidity, too!!  Going to be a beautiful day.

Mookie, I set out your coffee mug, so you're ready to pour your coffee, when you get in!

Well, Sarah made it home last night, around 11:15, 11:20.  She said that rail traffic was pretty backed up:  they had to wait in the eastend for about 4, 5 hours, because the yard was full of trains trying to get out, so the other trains could get into the yard.  That would have been a good thing to watch going on!Wink

Everyone have a great morning, and I'll see you all later.  UH, you all want a Fish Fry today, or a Fish Grill?
