Just got off the phone with my sister - they've found that my mother (84 this year) has colon cancer.

Larry, I am sorry to hear that about your mother. I know something about the situation, and trust that hers was discovered much sooner than mine was. May all go well with her.

Larry, so disturbing to hear the news. Like Johnny said, if they caught it early enough, she will be OK. A frend of mine has had it twice and is still going strong. Be blessed, and she is in my prayers

Larry, I'm very sorry to hear about your Mom.  We have a friend, who is 87, and he was just diagnosed with colon cancer about a month ago.  May your Mom do as well as he's doing.  Will be keeping her in my thoughts and prayers, as well as the rest of your family.

Good Saturday morning, everyone.  When I first awoke at 6:30 this morning, we had a temp of 86 degrees,   now the temp is 83.  But we'll be getting up to 98 degrees, with a heat index at noon right at 100 degrees.  By about 7 p.m., heat index is supposed to be about 106 degrees.

Coffee, juices, other morning beverages (including hot water for hot tea), are fresh and ready to go.  On the warmer/serving station this morning:  bagels, bear claws, and an assortment of doughnuts, along with traditional country breakfast fare such as biscuits/gravy, eggs, country fried steak, sliced tomatoes from the garden, grits, toast, fried taters.

Everyone have a  very good day, keeping cool, staying safe and taking care of yourselves.

Prayers and best wishes for your Mom and family, Larry.

Up this way, the EAA folks are buying up every woodchip they can from all the landscaping places.  There's thousands of airplane-campers and vehicle-campers coming to town next week...all heading for wet, mucky grass.

Been there, done that, Dan- about 30 years ago we spent the night in a little pop-up camper in the middle of an alfalfa field near Oshkosh.  Stormed all night; the next morning you didn't dare walk around with good shoes on, and people were burying their vehicles up to the axles.

Sorry to hear about your Mom Larry.  Here's hoping she'll beat it and be strong.

Brian,
We got another 2" last night.  There are some streets that the water simply won't go down any more as all the retention ponds are full, the lake and river are within about 16" of going over their banks, and most yards in town have standing water in them.  At EAA there are many areas that have standing water and are closed off to access.  A comment was overheard about the old Wal*Mart on one of the news stations:
"It's a good thing that the store has moved, otherwise we'd have nowhere to park any vehicle larger than a pickup truck."

That lot is chock full of 1 ton pickups, 5th wheel trailers, and motorhomes/coach busses.

Might get more rain today.  Another 2 or 3 inches...things could get real, real ugly in a few spots.  Off to make Sprout some breakfast and heading to the Farmer's Market before meeting a friend for lunch.

Hey Dan. Barbara & I are heading up your way for the fly in. We will visit family over in Princeton, then on Thursday we will set up between route 44 & the RR tracks between Ripon and Fisk and watch the planes come in.

Sounds like you'll be watching float planes only, Bob... we're currently "home", where it's supposed to stay nice and dry today.  Heading to God's country tonight.

At 7:30 this morning we had 80 degrees.....Believe that's tops this season for our starting temp at that time of day.  Humidity is still here too, but a bit of breeze also.  Plenty of sunshine.

Larry - I'm very sorry to hear about your mother. You and your family are in my prayers.

I was perusing some of the rainfall totals from last night, and I think I found a winner. Midway Airport in Chicago got 9.09" (yes, that is supposed to be a nine) over the course of about 10 hours. That's very nearly an inch per hour for ten hours. And of course that leaves me with the burning question: why can't anything like that ever happen in Omaha??

Be very careful what you wish for Willy.  In my experience hoping for weather like that is like sitting down to catch up with a relative you forgot why you 'lost touch with'.  It doesn't take long to get your fill and then things just keep on comin'...

I know, and I understand what you're saying, but I'm fascinated by extreme weather and there's no changing that. Part of it just has to do with the fact that it's very interesting to study these events and their causes, although I enjoy the weather itself to.

The system that got Chicago and environs is headed into NY and PA tonight and is already spawning some severe TS and tornado warnings.  The watch box is south of me for now.  We'll see what happens as itnears.

Update on Mom - surgery went well today, but the lab work results won't be available until Tuesday, at which time we'll see what happens.

Larry, glad to hear that your Mom's surgery went well.  Will continue to pray for her and your entire family.

We have only had sunshine, sunshine, sunshine all day.  A little bit of a breeze, but it is a hot breeze.  No sprinkles, or rain drops.

Here is our Saturday Night Pizza Fest menu:

1.  Canadian bacon;

2.  Cheese

3.  Chicago style

4.  Goetta

5.  Hawaiian

6.  Italian

7.  Pepperoni/mushroom

8.  Pepperoni/sausage/onion

9.  Supreme

Two extra large of each one, so we should have plenty for whomever comes in tonight.

Everyone enjoy your pizza, have a good evening, keep cool and take care.

The terrible flooding I just witnessed in western Chicago area {on ABC news}, will not be appreciated very much by the people envolved.....!

And yet, what a unique weather event this was. What perfect combination of conditions occurred to create these flooding rains? How likely is it that this will occur again? Study of this rainfall event may reveal clues that will allow forecasters to provide more advanced warning of future similar events, and allow the public to be better prepared to protect life and property.

.....That's all well and good....to learn.  But....wishing for extremes of weather for an area is not the best offer for those involved.

For what it's worth, this summer is the greenest my lawn has been this far into the summer in the 11 years I've lived in Texas.

I would also concur with Quentin, weather extremes are not a good thing...for anyone.

I can see we're going to be at least somewhat at odds about this, no matter what, so we'll lay it to rest. Just so you know that I'm not cold-hearted or self-centered, I don't wish injury or death on anyone affected by extreme weather. I understand that Mother Nature is not to be toyed with and I have a very deep respect for the power of nature. Nevertheless, I am fascinated by some of what nature sends our way.

And for what it's worth: many a research meteorologist would out of a job if the weather was always as tranquil and serene as everyone would like it to be.

I will vouch for Willy - I know I tease him over the weather, but in reality, he is just experiencing what I do when it looks like bad weather, you get a tingle.  You want to get close to the lion, you just don't want him to eat you or anyone else.  If possible, I think Willy and I would like to see the storm right up to the point of impact - then shut it off.

We should be going into our "dry" period if history repeats itself.  We should be fairly dry until the first week in Sept.  And coming out of an 11 year drought last year, we have had a wonderful summer up to this point.  Nice cool day today with north winds.  Sending it east for you to enjoy.

Yes, Willy.....We'll have to agree to disagree on "wishing for extreme weather to a certain area....."to learn from".

Many of us have seen and been involved in some of that "extreme" weather and it's nothing to wish on anyone to advance science, etc....

I do not wish extreme weather on anyone. I encourage you to read what Mookie said, as she stated my feelings as accurately and succinctly as is possible. I assure you, I'm not as unfeeling and barbaric as you may think.

Willy.....I thought we would put "this to rest"....

What and only what I was commenting on was your desire to have those situations come across the Omaha area, etc.....etc....and of course that's people and property....That's all I'm talking about.

My last comment.

Good Sunday morning, everyone.  I hope you all had a very good evening/night.  Took my muscle relaxer, along with my other nightly meds and went to bed/asleep around 10:30, maybe a little bit after.  Went right to sleep, and slept until around 5 a.m., turned over, and went back to sleep until 6:30 or so.

Coffee, juices and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go.  On the warmer/serving station this morning:  bagels, bear claws, and, how about some BLTs this morning?

I saw an interesting video on the internet this morning:  a bear, trapped in a car, in Larkspur, CO.  The owner had left the car unlocked, and the bear opened the door, trying to a peanut butter sandwich that was in the back seat.  Bear hit the gear shift, car rolled backward, and bear kept blowing the horn, when the car stopped in some trees, and couldn't get out of the car.  Inside of car totally destroyed.

Well, you all have a good morning, keep safe while doing whatever you need to do this morning, and I'll see you all in a few hours, with our Sunday Dinner menu.

Good morning. 82 degrees and sunny in Carolina with a high in the mid 90s today. I noticed that video too, but didn't watch it. I think I will go see if it is still available.

Everybody stay safe and maintain your cool.
