Good morning from Wyoming's Powder River basin! I got out of bed here at my sister's place within the last hour, and there is hardly any snow between Gillette and Rapid City, South Dakota. I did not see  any trains on the way out here, and it is a full 8 hour drive between Sioux Falls and Gillette, Wyoming.

Gillette does have a mining/train museum of sorts on the outskirts of this town, and there is a GE U-Boat in BN colors on display as you would drive past it.

I am going to be in Wyoming with my sister Cindy and her husband Gary Anderson for at least three weeks, possibly a full month. Tomorrow I get to see her dentist....fun! Disapprove But I've been neglecting the proper care of my teeth and I have to do do something about it.

I will try to send post cards to at least Walt, Paula and Sarah. Sadly, I lack mailing addresses for everyone else in this particular forum.

Have a good trip!   (Including to the dentist.)

Mutt and CW - a couple sticking together for 39 years is getting to be a rare instance these days.   You deserve all the credit and congratulations your receive!

Left the on-line scanner from MD on when I went to bed (it timed out overnight).  They were still getting stuck and calling for 4WD vehicles to reach patients on EMS calls as I dozed off.

Time to get cleaned up (it is Sunday, after all), pick up the Sunday paper, then head off to an EMS class at noon in a neighboring town.

.....We have bright overcast skies and some sunshine this morning and about an hour or so ago a temp of 10 degrees.  Didn't go away from the house yesterday.  Even after we had our driveway plowed....Thought we did not need to be out there.  Street is plowed too so, our venture to church {about 5 mil.} should not be any big problem this morning....just to be careful.

Reports last night from the weather service is that we received 9.5" of the stuff here....I really couldn't tell because of the 35 mph winds night before.  I do know we couldn't have negotiated the in and out of our driveway with what was on it.....And there was no use to even think about it.  Made sure we had what we needed before hand...

Now, there is another storm coming from the west again.....and the forecast {the early one}, for us here, is 4 to 6" of the stuff....We'll be checking that closer today.  That is to arrive starting Monday night.

Snow still hanging on the trees here....Glad the power utilitiy, serving our area has had very extensive tree trimming done in the past 5 years....Initiated by our great ice storm back in '05.  That sure helps when we get ice or wet snow now......

14 degrees now at 9:17 am...

.......Pssssst.......on anniversaries, don't tell anyone, but Jean and I just passed our 51st a few months ago.........!

Good morning everyone.  Currently 46 degrees and cloudy here in Alamo City.  I spoke to two friends who live in Maryland...they both ended up with over 2.5 feet of snow!

More rain expected beginning tonight and into the upcoming week.

Its gonna be a madhouse trying to get to the grocery store today because of the Super Bowl.

Everyone enjoy your Sunday.  And id you are in a snow area, please be careful if you are out and about.

Just heard from my Nephew who lives just west of Baltimore.

He said that he received between 33 and 38 inches of snow in the town where he lives (Ellicott City).

I'm so glad I live in south Texas.  Cool

Congrats on the anniversary, Walt and Paula, my parents will have 33 years come April Fools day....

Quentin, from what the National Weather Service in Milwaukee/Sullivan is saying, we are looking at 6-10 inches here from an unusual Alberta clipper, usually the big storms are the Panhandle hooks out of Texas.  No watches or warnings up yet, they are not sure about the track of the system, but they are letting people know about it.

Quiet day here, though was scratching my head a bit ago, developing a track plan for my shelf layout, moving switches and industries around, finding the best position for everything, developing a list of items I still need for track, and maybe a few extra buildings (thinking about having the mill also receive scrap paper by rail, as well as pulpwood).

Well, see everyone later, have a good time watching the super bowl.....

Good evening, everyone!  Ray, glad to know you made to your sister's in Wyoming safely.  Enjoy your vacation there!!

Thank you to everyone for the anniversary wishes.  All in all, it's been a pretty good 23 years of marriage to Walt.  Sure, we're like all married couples, we have our disagreements sometimes, but that's what makes your marriage stronger, isn't it?

We had a very good time at Tumbleweed.  Walt and I got our usual beef burrito deluxe enchilada style, and Sarah got a fajita.  Don't remember the sides she got.  After we had been served our meals, our waitress came over and made a point of telling Walt to not get too full (I think she was including me in that, but she was only looking at Walt).  When we had finished eating, she came out with a plate with two brownies, covered in ice cream, whipped cream and cherries, with a couple of book matches in it, to represent candles.  That was very nice of them to do that.  I knew they did something for birthdays, but I didn't realize they did anniversaries also.

You all have a great evening,  stay warm, keep safe and take care.  See you all in the morning.

The EMS class I went to yesterday was about geriatrics (us old folk).  It was noted that one reason we have a lot of health issues any more is because we now live long enough to have them.  Average life expectancy a century ago was in the range of 50 years.  It's at 75 now, and still climbing, and the elderly will soon outnumber the young.

During the lecture the instructor opined that one reason husbands die before their wives is because they want to.....

That's obviously not the case with the Denizens of the Diner.

I'll have my bearclaw and tea in the corner.

A belated and late congratulations to both Walt and Paula over your 23rd anniversary! And I hope you will have many, many more to come!

Right now here in Gillette, Wyoming we have a temp of -3 degrees below 0, and the wind chill places us at about 14 below. It is supposed to warm up to about 9 degrees F this afternoon. Tomorrow we will see a high of roughly 23 degrees.

And Mookie, if you are disgusted with the way the weather patterns are, just remember it could always be a lot worse! I keep telling myself that spring will finally arrive in July!!

Walt and Paula: I'm sorry it's a day late, but I want to wish you a very happy anniversary! May there be many more to come!

Just got done with a Psychology exam. There were 39 questions over 160 pages of material. Kind of ridiculus in my opinion, but I believe I did well.

Temperature was 25 degrees when I got up at 7:00 a.m.. Now it's 8 degrees. After slipping and sliding to school today, even I'm about ready for spring to get here.

Mookie and Larry, guess we really are considered "geriatric" now??  Funny, considering our health concerns, I don't consider that term/disignation for any of us here in the Cafe/Diner, or elsewhere on these forums.

Here is the menu Jack (dining car) requested for lunch today, along with a few other menu items I selected:

1.  Turkey sandwiches w/cole slaw and sweet potato fries, regular fries or curly fries, tossed salad and your choice of vegetable beef soup or beef stew & cornbread to go with both

Dessert:  A big whole sheet cake of chocolate cake w/chocolate frosting (hopefully, we'll have enough left over for Valentine's Day Sunday), ice cream (vanilla, neopolitan, Snickers, and Death by Chocolate)

In a little bit, here at home, I'll be putting chicken on to boil, and making up dumplin dough for our dinner of chicken  & dumplins.

They started saying last night, and are continuing to say that when the snow starts in our area tonight, going through Wednesday morning, we will probably end up with about 6 inches.  I'm in agreement with Mookie, Willy and anyone else:  I'm looking forward to spring time!!

Everyone have a good afternoon, Jack enjoy your birthday lunch, and everyone else enjoy your lunch and you all take care.

CW, thanks so much for my special menu items for my 78th birthday. I especially enjoy all of my requested irems because my bride of 56 years is in Paris with our daughter who is celebrating her 50th and wanted to take a special trip.

I was envited too but chose to stay in AZ to take care of the homestead, and check out the BNSF Transcon.

Jack, you are very welcome!  And here is the dinner/supper menu for tonight:

1.  Steak, baked potatoes, string beans, and tossed salad, along with corn, and crescent dinner rolls (I know Jack's steak is medium rare, along with a few of you other folks)

2.  Chicken & dumplins

And for dessert, the chocolate sheet cake (don't worry about the candles, Jack, as I have a couple of # candles, a 7 and an 8), so we'll be giving Larry and our other resident firefighters a break, tonight.  There's also several flavors if ice cream to go with the birthday cake.

Everyone enjoy your supper, have a good evening ,and take care.

CW, and Walt,

Happy anniversary! I hope you have many more!

Snow has come here in western Indiana. We got 6 inches with more coming tonight. I hope that on one will be hurt in the impending blizzard.

Have a good evening,

Justin

Well, according to the latest weather report a few minutes ago, our snow is to start around 8 p.m.; by midnight, we'll have an inch or two; a couple more inches by 8 a.m tomorrow, and then by sometime late afternoon, early evening, a total of 6 inches.

I think I must have a target pasted on me, we are supposed to get the brunt of it this time around, NWS is predicting 8 to 14 or 9 to 17 inches, depending on what math one uses.  Might have an extra day off tomorrow, as I don't care to drive in this weather.

Got back from the Walthers outlet a little while ago, bought more track and switches for the layout, and bought a structure to be my scrap paper building for my paper mill complex.  Might have time to work on some of it tomorrow.....

See everyone later.....

All of this snow makes me wonder. What if we have an early spring thaw and then rain on top of the thaw? Could it be another 1936?

The Spring of 1936 was the 2nd devastation of Johnstown, Pa....Yes, from a massive flood.

.....And I do remember it.....Have a memory of being down there and at some relative's home, and remember mud was probably several ft. thick inside....Of course, this was after the flood waters resided, etc......

As I work at the computer, I have on in the background a scanner feed from Calvert County, MD.

It's Monday evening, and their road crews are still going at it, with no end in sight from the last snowfall.   Now they're getting more.

It's very obvious from listening to them that they are not used to this.  Had the same snowfall occurred here, or anywhere in the northern tier, the plow crews might be out tidying up, but they'd have had the roads cleared by Sunday morning, when the sun did come up.

That was when it flooded from Ohio to New England. The Connecticut river flooded Springfield, Ma very much. Was a winter of much snow then a thaw with a very hard rain. Many rivers had ice jams. If it happens this year do not call me a prophet!!
