I' assume the east coast around DC this weekend is a minor inconvenience.

In the north woods it's a minor inconvenience.   In DC it's a major cat-astrophe...

Ah, yes. I do not doubt that the "snow evacuation" routes have been well used. When driving in DC in late spring and summer, I have seen the snow evacuation signs along the proper streets. I trust that by the time our hoped-for trip this year comes (mid-May there), there will be no danger of snow storms.

Out here, we have had one semi-serious snowfall in the valley, but the ski resorts have received plenty (may there be enough up in the mountains so Ricki and I can take baths this summer).

.....If DC gets the 20 to 30" we've seen them discussing.....That would be a bit of a problem for anyone....I'm from snow country too, and that would slow us all down for a while.

I vote we send all our snow - new and old to Quentin - he seems to be the only one enjoying it.

If he doesn't want it...send it up this way!  I think it's actually my fault the snow is down in your neck of the woods.  See...a while back I fixed my snowblower and stocked up on sidewalk salt and sand.  Since then?  Nothin' but flurries!

Sir Chicken - I am so glad you didn't call as you went through.  Morpheus was singing to me about that time.

Does Willy know that is the reason we got snow - a chicken from the west blowing through the area at a high rate of speed?

Flew? - I slud!Oops

(PS - That was Willy's favorable weather too! - I do not wan't to see what his rough weather is like. I' assume the east coast around DC this weekend is a minor inconvenience.)

I had presumed that you were going to be coming through earlier than last night, thus before the snow. I guess I was wrong! Clown I know, nothing but excuses.

Personally, I think it would be neat to get 30 inches out of one storm once. Then never again! That might even be a little more than I can stomach.

By the way, today was National Weatherperson Appreciation Day. So go ahead and thank all of the meteorologists you know for their service (or lack of service, as the case may be) to the community.

Willy - did we miss the "pre-meteorologist" day?

OK - snow is around now, but....what does spring look like in the true midwest?  That can be even worse for us.

Dan - your snow is ready, but you need to come and get it.  It is piled up in the backyard with a crow sitting on it.

Where is the coffee?  Trust me, you don't want to drink coffee I make - hot tap water and a rounded tbsp instant coffee.  Oh and a little milk.  ROWRRRRR

Wellllllll hello there! 39 and cloudy in Carolina, getting up to 50 and partly clear. The most snow we have had in my lifetime was 22" in March of 73. There was a goshawful snow back in the 30s where people had to climb out the window to go outside. I don't have details on it, but apparently the Coast Line kept moving, or at least tried to. Remote switchmen reported to work as usual, but whether anything came along has been forgotten to time. Them was the days!!

Everyone take care and stay warm

Morning all...

Not much happening at the house now, just cloudy and in the upper 20's, the possibility of lake effect snow is around for later today, but will not see much around here.

About the guy who got stuck in front of the train in ATL:  I think he will have a hard time finding another job, and the company will probably be better off changing the drivers seat on the tractor.  As for the kingpin on the trailer, they can take some abuse, I have had to get a running start to get under a trailer in an icy lot before.

Well, will have breakfast, then work on the layout some, get some roadbed and figure out the track plan.  See everyone later.....

......It's difficult to tell just how much snow we really did get.....in fact, Jean just put boots on and started down the 70' driveway to get to the street to retrieve the paper, and fell down and was having ttrouble getting up and a Yorktown snow plow was just coming by and the young fellow jumped out and helped her get up and back up to the house....

I didn't see this happen and she wasn't overtime in getting back so didn't know anything had occured yet...

That gives an idea of what the weather system left here for us....It seems considerably more than forecast.  I stepped out with my rule measure earlier and it looked like 6.5", but with our 35 mph winds overnight, I really don't know just how much yet.....At the back of the house, looking out from the family room door there is a line stacked up ridge from blowing off the roof and it's at least 2' plus feet deep.

So, now the radar does show it's about to leave our area....We got ours mostly from the "wrap around" from the big Low system going thru....

As the day goes on, maybe we can get a better handle on how much is figured we got in our mid west part of this system......We generally get about two of these in a season, and this one is the second, so now....will we head towards Spring.  Temp not critical now:  25 degrees

Power flickered late last night, but thankfully, it stayed on......beneficial with a total electric home......

Edit:  11:51 and now and we have had bright sunshine now for over an hour.....Everything is so extra bright / white with snow on everthing and the bright sun...and beautiful mostly blue skies....

I saw a story about a coffee taste test some time ago.  All the popular brands were represented.  A consistent winner?  Instant.

I figure it's because they can tweak and blend the product to match the largest number of tastes.

Apparently they've come a long way from what passed for instant coffee in the beginning.

No news from the MD area yet on the storm there, but the weather radar came up all blue when I checked it a few minutes ago, and a correspondent from Delaware (on another forum) is reporting 19" so far.

On a humorous note - my Dalmatian likes my company.   Too much, sometimes.  Lately, though, he's taken to getting off my bed, walking out to where he can see what I'm doing, and if I'm on the computer, turning around and heading back for the bed....

A few miles and a few degrees can make all the difference. It's 37 degrees with rain in Norfolk, but it's 31 degrees with snow in Washington, DC. As of last report, Washington has over 20 inches now.

Randy; kingpins do indeed take a lot of abuse. There isn't any good thoughts when you are trying to hook up in mud and you jump the pin.  Of course the gear is fully extended and not any blocks  around to help raise up the level of the trailer. The same naughty thoughts for hard pack snow on the lot. Then try to break off that clump of slush off gear crank. Ain't winter trucking fun101??   Respectfully  , Cannonball            P.S. Good luck to you.

Joanie's version is just a half-teaspoon of instant with the milk, and add two packets of Splenda.  Personally, I don't drink the stuff, weak or strong.

Thanks Cannonball....

Yes, everything all ok.....She just kind of stumbled in the thick wet, heavy stuff and couldn't hardly get her feet out from under as she fell...We were just annexed to the community of Yorktown {2mi. distant}, a few years ago and now have excellent plowing service, and being a small community now....{10,000 Pop.}, including all new annexed areas, and good local utility workers, and I'd say it was typical action of the young fellow, one can expect in our area....Which was great.

Update on Weather:  12:03:  Bright sunshine now and with everything loaded with new snow and the bright sun it is really hard to even look outside now....Pretty blue sky too.....26 degrees.  Still can't tell with any good accuracy just how much of the white stuff we did get....35 mph winds overnight, but my best estimate is 6.5" plus....

I have never been enthralled by instant coffee; it always seemed to me that even the best had a woody taste. Ricki used instant coffee for many years, until we responded to an advertisement which promised samples of the company's coffee and a small (3-4) cup coffee maker. We have used this size pot ever since, but buy coffee locally--and I now grind the beans at home.

Just before I went into the hospital last month, Ricki asked me to get some instant coffee since she now has trouble putting the maker together. I bought the smallest jar I could find; she made one cup--and wants to get rid of the rest of it.

Light rain here yesterday and today, with the temperature in upper thirties to forties, but down to about twenty tomorrow morning.

Finally heard from my son.  No snow depth - just "no plows for 18 hours - we're officially snowed in."

He does note, however, that his driveway is clear.  Must be that north country upbringing....

Edit:  Fresh picture from the middle of it all.  You think the people hate the snow....

Just got home from grocery store.  Lots to report.

CW/Mutt are stranded on their puter.  Server is bad.  Server will stand in corner until can behave.

Tree - wow - that is some snow!  Ours is mushy right now and at 34' you don't want to overdress - very muggy.  (83%)  Melting and no wind - that's today only.

Coffee - I don't care for instant, but you buy what you can get at the grocery store.  I had a Mr. Coffee - got rid of it.  It was a pain to make coffee in, drink one cup and then clean up.  I did find some coffee bags - just like tea bags - make one cup.  Haven't seen them since.  Must be an embargo on them at our major grocery store.

I don't mind good coffee just black - but most coffee isn't even fair, let alone good.  My real treat is Starbucks Skinny Latte - no sweetner.  Get that about once a week at the bookstore.  And - Amigos - don't eat their food, but they have good skinny lattes - so we drive thru on Sunday and get 2 and head trackside.  They can run as low as 99 cents and they are good sized cups.  Mickey D's coffee is ok - latte by choice.  NO SWEETNERS!  They will gag you with it.  Do like Joanie and add your own Splenda or sugar.

Coffee good if water good and coffee not too strong to the point of being bitter.  Additives will help a lot.

Lincoln has good well water.  Makes all the difference in the world!  Even bad coffee isn't too bad.

I've been listening to fire scanner traffic from Prince George's County, MD (just east of DC).  They are simply overwhelmed.  Units are stuck and waiting for someone to get available to tow them out, fire stations with two feet of snow in front of their bay doors.

Getting patients out of houses is apparently a real issue - they're having problems with the snow.  That, and I heard one call that apparently involves as many as nine people and a carbon monoxide problem.

Sheesh.

Good evening, everyone!  Mookie, the server must have taken your scolding to heart, as I am now able to get in here, at 8:55 p.m. EST!

We didn't get that much snow here this morning, like a lot of people did:  maybe had an inch, inch and a half in some places.  Our front yard and sidewalk barely had a covering.  But our sidewalk along the north side of the house, when Sarah and I went out this afternoon, was very icy.  I managed to stay upright, with my good boots on that I got last  winter.  She and I went and did a couple of errands, and also stopped at the grocery store.

Joe and Mookie, thanks for getting the word out that we were having puter problems today.  Both Walt and I were about to pull our hair out, trying and trying to log in here.  Sarah even tried on her laptop, before we went out, and she got the same message we were getting.  We got home about 6 p.m, or just after, and Walt said he'd tried again, to no avail.

And Joe, thanks for taking care of the pizzas for tonight. Everything is on the serving station, fresh out of the oven.  What's left, we'll have tomorrow, especially for all you football fans, who'll be watching the Super Bowl.

As for here at home, we're going out to eat tomorrow:  it's Walt's and my 23rd anniversary, so I'm taking the three of us out to eat, at Tumbleweed.  We haven't been in a loooooonnng time.  All three of us are looking forward to it, especially Sarah, as she's never been to Tumbleweed before.

Everyone have a good evening, what's left of it, and take care, keep safe and warm, and I'll see you all in the morning.

Quentin, I was reading that the Pennsylvania Turnpike was having problems with trucks getting stuck in the vicinity of the Somerset Exit.  Traiffic on the Turnpike was back up between Somerset and Donegal.

Hi Murray;

Yes, we were aware of the bad conditions there....an accident the night before had traffic still at a standstill for over 18 hrs. or so....That is the area that crosses the Alleghenies and is over 2,000 ft. in elevation and gets lots of snow.  That is our home area....10 miles from Somerset.  Actually, we stay in the Hampton Inn there in Somerset when we go back "home" each year for a visit.....

Walt and Paula....Best wishes for a good happy anniversary.  Sarah enjoy outing too.

Good Sunday morning, everyone.  Joe, Quentin and  Tom, thank you  for the anniversary wishes.

Coffee, juices, hot chocolate and other hot morning beverages are fresh and ready to go.

On the serving station this morning:  nice and hot buttermilk pancakes w/plenty of syrup, jam, whatever you prefer on your pancakes, w/turkey bacon, pork sausage, and scrambled eggs.

Our current temp is 18, and with the wind chill, feels like 11 degrees outside.  High today is supposed to be in the mid to upper 20s.  Seems like everyone needing to go out today, really needs to bundle up!!

Everyone enjoy your breakfast, have a good morning, take care, keep safe and stay warm.
