Well, we're seeing another month getting ready to close, and it's time to close the doors on September's Flat Wheel Cafe & Diner.   Look for the October version in just a few minutes.  See you all in our new digs.

My source was wrong. The second big quake was in Indonesia, not Malaysia. Also, Samoan sources report now 141 dead and a pile missing in the region.

Now they are reporting another big quake in Malaysia with many collapsed buildings and communications failures. Massive flooding and wind damage in VietNam and Cambodia, tsunami damage in both Samoas and Tonga. It has been a big day in the central and sowestPac. Wonder what's next....

I haven't been listening to the news reports, so I haven't heard how the news readers are doing with pronounching the name of the capital of American Samoa - Pago Pago.

Most simply say it the way it looks, with a long A and hard G (pay-go pay-go).  In reality, in Samoan, the G is pronounced as an "ng", and the a is closer to an O - "paan-go paan-go," not "pang-o pang-o."   Even then, the G isn't "hard," as in "pang."  I really can't think of a way to describe it, though.  You just kind of roll it off the roof of your mouth.

Many years ago, I read that the name of the capital is spelled without the "n" because--when the first printing press was being brought to Samoa, there was mishap which resulted in the loss of all of the type for that letter. Maybe so, maybe not.

As it is, my mother corrected me early on, as to the pronunciation of the name. She also corrected me as to the pronunciation of the names of two places in Mississippi--Biloxi and Pass Christian. The people who live there say, "Bi (very short "i") LUX i (short "i"), and Pass CHRIS ti (short "i") an.

Quentin, it does look like our temps were running about the same this morning.  I took my early morning walk, and with the sun shining nicely, I wasn't even cool.  Stayed pretty comfortable.

For lunch today, I've warmed up some beef stew and made a fresh batch of cornbread, and made some more garden salad.

Let me know what you all would like to have for supper tonight, in case you all would like something different, and I'll get it ready for supper.

Latest death toll {two hrs. ago}, that I heard is now 99 in Samoa.

Our early morning temp here I noted was 51...very similar to Paula's....We're about 140 miles north of their location.

It's overcast, but getting brighter and believe we'll see sunshine today....Hope so, I'd like to do a mowing.  {Sun just peaked thru my east window here}.

Dialed up a bit of heat in our family room {first this season}, and in the office here this morning....Thermostat in each room.  It was 71.9 degrees in our main bathroom and about 67 in the family room so it was time to suppliment that a bit....Not bad, for this is the first we've needed any to warm it up a bit.

Heard the news about the tsunami in Samoa with some shock, having been to American Samoa back in the early '70s.  It's a beautiful place - Hawaii lots of years ago.

I checked the on-line feed from their radio station (WVUV), but it's off line.

Goom moring. Movin right along, 54 degrees and cloudy in Cartolina, only headed for 76 today. Quite a contrast from a few days ago. I got up early and turned the wireless on, and said howdy to a guy on an island off VietNam. It seems there is a problem there with a looming typhoon, and two local freighters have been lost with their crews. A lot going on, with the tsunami in Samoa, etc. Paula, there is a local restaurant that makes the best beef stew I have ever sat down to. Tasty, with just the right amount od fat and so tender you really don't have to chew. Of course, we don't eat there because the wife doesn't like the place, and a few years ago, disliked something they had on the menu.... What a waste. Everybody take care and stay safe

Good Wednesday morning, everyone.  Well, we didn't get as cool last night (at least so far) as they were predicting for overnight.  Current temp at 7:21 is 50 degrees out at International Airport, and 53 degrees here in the downtown area.  High today should be somewhere in the low to mid 60s.

Coffee, juices, hot cider, hot chocolate and hot water for tea are ready to go this morning.  On the warmer bar this morning:  bacon, sausage, fried or scrambled eggs and homemade buttermilk biscuits, so you can 'build' your own biscuit sandwiches.  And there's plenty of cheese, if you'd like to had cheese to them.

Everyone have a good morning, take care and be safe.

Mookie, Johnny, and others semi interested, we're supposed to be down in the mid 40s in the morning.  We've already put the little heater in the living room, and utility room, and took the fan out of the living room window.  The fan in the bedroom window came out Friday.  But the window is still cracked just a hair, since heat rises, so it doesn't get too unbearable in there.

Well, Walt and I just finished eating supper awhile ago:  I made a big pot (Walt's chili pot) of beef stew.  We each had second helpings (not sure if we were just extra hungry, and or I did an extra good job on this batch of stew.

Mookie matt  has some scooby doo slippers to keep your feet warm.

Mookie, my feet are all right during the day, but I need either more cover over them, or a heating pad (in the winter) under them at night. I think that the chemotherapy stuff three years ago went down to my feet and did strange things to the circulatory system; at times my toes and the balls of my feet are numb.

I finished closing the swamp cooler up for the winter yesterday (cut the water off, drained the pan, put new filters in for next year, covered the outside part, and covered the inlet with foam and a piece of paneling). Now, I need to put a solid plug in the storm door. I did turn the thermostat to heat this afternoon--just in case it gets cold in the night.

We had another uneventful trip up to South Ogden and back--no trains.

The low this morning was about sixty, and the high was in the upper eighties (the weather guessers changed their minds as to when the nor'wester is going to blow in). We expect our high temperature tomorrow to come well before sunrise, with the daytime high to be about fifty--and snow is expected in the mountains, with showers in the valley. The wind has been out of the south, with varying speed, all day. I'm glad wwe do not live over near the Wasatch Front; there can be really strong winds blowing down the various canyons.

It was cold here this morning (37 degrees), but we're in the mid 60s now. It's really a beautiful afternoon.

My Theology professor is ill, so that class was cancelled today, which made for a pretty easy day. I hope he doesn't have swine flu (er, H1N1 -- have to make sure I'm not being insensitive to all the swine out there).

Tree - I would take him in a heartbeat.  I have always had animals and they always laid on my feet and kept them warm.

It is my own stubbornness that keeps my feet cold.  I wear socks to bed - even in summer - hate cold toes.  Have 3 pairs of slippers and wear socks with each one.  But they all make my socks slip down into them, so have to constantly pull up my socks and.....I hate any kind of shoes.  ANY!  I am in stocking feet year round if possible.  Even stocking slippers don't work for me.  Do lots of stairs here and don't want anything like a shoe in my way when traveling up the stairs.

So will take a page from the late Mookie's playbook and sit up here with the sun coming in either the east or south windows this winter and put my toes in it.  And after the sun goes down - will do what we did at football games - put my feet in trash bags!  Thumbs Up

Mookie

36 degrees and mah toes are cold!

Mookie, we had sun shining when I left to go up to the community center this morning.  Now, though that I'm back home, the sun is hidden behind the clouds, so we probably won't be getting out of the low to mid 50s today after all.  It's even chilly here in the house.

Produce went well this morning.  We had 70 some odd people, and  got some goodies:  ears of corn, potatoes, carrots, lettuce and green apples (and I don't think they were Granny Smith apples, either).

On the warmer bar today:  you have your choice of:

1.   Leftover Beef stew w/cornbread (fresh out of the oven) and garden salad

2.  Mild chili w/your choice of the following sandwiches:  PB&J or grilled cheese

I'm getting ready to head to my kitchen, here at home, and start working on a pot of beef stew for us to have tonight.

Everyone enjoy your meal, have a good afternoon, stay as warm as you can, and take care.

Not quite as cold as most of you on here this morning and now it's getting lighter.  Overcast but dry.  Wind {overnight}, has blown quite a bit of leaves out of our yard from some big trees west of us.

So....If the wind subsides I just might do a mowing again today....Grass is really green and growing now.   Looks like mowing will be with me until into November some time.  Of course doing so quite often, pulverizes leaves with my mulcher mower too...Not from any trees of mine,...{they're all evergreens}, but western neighbor.  25,000 sq ft. plus of mostly flat yard to do it on.

In the fifties this morning, and still there now, I think.  And it's raining, again.  I may get one more crop of hay out of the yard, unless I get it mowed soon.  This should be one of the last times, though.

Ray - I'm hoping I won't find the need to work once I retire, but I may do so just to get out some.  I'm sure I can make as good a sub or pizza as anybody.

Ms Mook - I can loan the Dal to you.  He's plenty warm, and likes to cuddle - all 75 lbs of him.  If he's in your lap, you won't have to worry about cold toes.  You won't be able to feel them at all....  Tongue

Mookie, if your toes are cold, I suggest you get yourself a couple pairs of wool socks.

I got out of bed two hours ago, and the temp here was 34 degrees, it has since then warmed up to about 44 degrees and I am running my furnace for the first time this morning. Today's temp in Sioux Falls is supposed to top out at about 63 degrees, perhaps a bit warmer than that.

Late yesterday afternoon I had submitted applications for employment with four different businesses, including one of our local HY-VEE grocery stores, Culver's, Burger King and Dairy Queen. I am hoping that at least one of these outfits will call me for an interview within a reasonable length of time. I picked up the applications and returned them all in the same day, all filled out, and in the process I know that I had walked at least 8 miles. Needless to say, I was quite tired when I got home last night.

Good Tuesday morning, everyone.  Mookie, glad you're still with us!  I was beginning to wonder.  And hello, Cannonball!  It's good to see you in, also.  Hope you enjoyed the applesauce cake last night.

Mookie, our temp this morning is in the low 50s right now, going down to the upper 40s later this morning.  And I will have some kind of jacket on this morning when I leave for Tuesday Produce!  And I hope your thumb is much better this morning.

Coffee, juices, hot cider, hot chocolate and hot water for tea are ready.  (Notice a theme here this morning?)  On the warmer bar this morning:  bagels, bear claws, scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, biscuits & gravy, and fried taters.  There's also oatmeal (plain, maple/brown sugar, cinnamon & spice) and toast.

Everyone enjoy breakfast, have a good morning, keep warm, and I'll see you all after Produce!

CW a slice of applesauce cake  / with coffee  will suffice till the stew is ready.  Not too big a piece , want to load up  on stew.  I'll just sit and wait.  The nights are gittin'  longer  and cooler here in the mountains .  Cannonball

CW - busy weekend, busy day.  Sorry I missed breakfast, but had to hunt down my winter coat for tomorrow's trip to the garden.  38 tonite.  Brrrr....

Do you know the busiest spot on the human body is the right thumb when it has a vertical cut on it?  Even having the Driver kiss it didn't help a bit.  Iodine didn't either, so tonite it is going to get a good antiseptic cream and bandaid and it will have to sleep tucked under the covers!

Now it is time for bed and still don't have everything done.  Guess Monday's work will have to slop over into Tuesday.  Just like a real job!  Big Smile

Evening all,

Had fun camping in the muddy rain this past weekend! Really I did. I might run for quartermaster too next year!

CW, that sounds awesome! Can’t wait for supper!

Really a coo day today. Fall is in the air. Saw 5 combines pickin’ corn today. Well, a few were soy bean’s I guess.

See you all later!

Joe, glad you at least, like the idea of beef stew for this evening!  And Larry, I'm also glad that you've managed to dry out today!!

I laid down on the couch for a little bitty nap, and now I'm cold!  So, yes, I'm also glad I decided on the beef stew.  As a matter of fact, I went to the grocery this afternoon, and got stew meat, etc., and will be fixing that for here at home tomorrow!!

Wonder where Mookie has been today:  haven't seen her around here all day, along with some of our other regulars, who seem to be MIA.

You all have a good evening, take care and I'll see you all later.

Bumps and rumbles and wind this afternoon so far, with some heavy rain thrown in for good measure.  Wind damage reported in the Niagara region, with a 59 mph wind gust.

Haven't heard anything going on here, yet, but the night's not over, either.
