Key lime pie--I had a good one back in February of 1970. I had been to a meeting in Hialeah, Florida (by rail, of course); the people with whom I stayed had a lime tree and they gave me a bagful to take home. I commented on the gift to the proprietress of the cafe where I often ate (I was still single, and my money almost jingled), and she told me to bring them in so she could make me a pie (no, she was old enough to be my mother).

I have replenished the warmer bar with fresh off the grill burgers, brats, etc., along with plenty more of the orange chicken and all the side dishes.

Everyone enjoy, have a great evening, and take care.  Have been hearing thunder for for the last 40 minutes, but so far, haven't seen any rain.

Getting settled with college here. I've determined that Atmospheric Sciences will probably be my favorite class, which should come as no surprise. The professor for that class is friendly and funny, which are positive points right off the start. Plus, the content of the course is right up my alley. I'm also taking an Atmospheric Sciences Lab which will meet on Tuesday each week, starting next week.

My professor for Rhetoric and Composition was my 8th grade Literature teacher. This class will involve a lot of writing, but I actually find writing to be rather enjoyable.

I'm taking a one credit hour course titled Exploring the Frontiers of Physics. This will involve reading about certain aspects of Physics and then discussing the reading with my professor and classmates. No math involved, but there will be a few short papers over the course of the semester. Again, this professor is quite friendly and the class should be pretty simple.

Theology promises to be pretty interesting. Like the others, this course will involve writing several papers throughout the course of the semester.

Calculus will be difficult. I'm not bad at math, but I do always need to give it some extra attention, or else I won't do as well. So far, I'm having trouble getting used to the Calculus professor's teaching style, which is not going to benefit me.

I'm living off campus, which should be useful in most aspects (good food, no noisy roommate, etc). However, finding a place to park each morning has been difficult.

That's my first semester at Creighton University in a nutshell. I think I'll like it for the most part. I need to make some room for train watching though!

Willy - Sounds like you're off to a good start.

I'm going back to bed.  It's 1:15 AM and I just got back from my second run of the night.  First was medical, this one was a young lad who rolled his car.  Fortunately he wasn't hurt badly and will ride home with mom and dad.  His car, on the other hand...

Good Friday morning, everyone.  Willy, it's very good to see you in here!  It sounds like you're really enjoying your first few days in college!  Sounds like you're going to be very, very busy.  Just don't forget your friends on here, and come in to see us whenever you can, to give us all an update on how things are going.Thumbs Up

We currently have 70 degrees at 6:14 a.m., and going for a high of 85, with t-showers/storms coming in later on this afternoon, bringing in cooler air for overnight.  Our projected highs for about the next week are to be in the low 70s.

Coffee, juices, lemonade, iced teas are freshly made, and there's plenty of hot water for hot tea or cocoa.

Doughnuts, danish, muffins, bagels and bear claws are on the brekfast bar.

Hopefully, I'll be back in time to do the lunch time version of our Friday Fish Fry.  I go this morning, to get my new brace:  the ankle/arch support brace is finally in.  Hopefully, if I'm not back in here by about 11:30, 12:00, one of you can take over, and start the fish in the fryers.  The side dishes and desserts are already prepared, and in the fridge, ready to heat up and put out on the warmer bar.

Everyone have a great morning, and I'll see you all later on.

Good morning, and thanks for breakfast. 75 degrees and clear (I think) before sunrise in Carolina, headed for 89 and, as usual, more thunder. The forecasts for the past few days have called for thunder, but they have either gone around or fizzled out before getting here. Paula, I hope all goes well with the new brace and it fits well and comfortably. With all the antennas I have, any missed or fizzled thunderstorm is a blessing. Everybody take care,

Tom

Okay, I managed to make it back, mainly because they picked me up an hour and a half early!  Fortunately, when I got to the Orthotics & prosthetics Center, they could go ahead and take me early.  I have the new ankle/arch support brace, and for this week, wear it for a half hour at a time, with a two hour wait inbetween.  Next week, I'll increase the wear time to an hour, with a two hour wait inbetween.

Our Friday Fish Fry is now on the warmer bar.  Selection of fish include:  cod, haddock, halibut, flounder, perch, shrimp, and crab cakes.

Side dishes:  baked beans, cole slaw, fries, hush puppies, macaroni & cheese, fried mushrooms, corn on the cob.

Deserts:  apple, blueberry, cherry and peach cobbler; chocolate pie, pecan pie, yellow cake w/chocolate icing and white cake w/coconut icing.

Now, I'm going to go take a short walk, and come home to probably take a nap.   Everyone enjoy your meal, have a very good afternoon, and take care.

Yet, you should do better than I did with calculus. I started it in summer school after my first year, and finished it after the cut-off date for completing incomplete work in the fall semester. I was working on the college Building and Ground Crew from seven to six Monday through Friday, and from seven to noon on Saturday. There was no other student in the class, and I studied by myself at night; when I thought I was ready for a test, I told my professor. He left the college at the end of summer school, and his replacement caried me through to the end. As the cut-off date approached, I asked the Dean of Students for an extension, which he immediately gave me, saying that he knew what my summer schedule had been.

Probably only if she stands on Mutt's shoulders, however she will make a good baseball catcher (low to the ground)

Any one else flirting with 70-75 degree temps this weekend?  I have my windows and doors open!  78 right now.  Lovin' it.

I thought CW would be playing guard; you don't have to be tall to play that position (just able to jump). I am sure you remember when women's basketball teams had six players with three at each end of the court. Now, there are five, and all play from one end to the other.

Yes, we are after this afternoon rain....but....the house remains closed up and A/C working because of the high humidity...Really muggy outside....with fog this evening.

We're to have another possibility of rain tomorrow afternoon, and then a front passes and clears for dry weather and cooler for about 4 days....but back to about 80 by Wed.

Johnny and Mookie:  I don't know about playing basketball.  Maybe, if I'm sitting on his shoulders.  But not  standingI don't have good enough coordination! But is does straighten my right foot, so maybe I can give a more accurate "swift kick" to anybody who needs it.WinkEvil  You all take care, and I'll see you all in the morning.

Nighty night, all/.

Good Saturday morning everyone.  Joe, thanks for such a delicious looking breakfast.  I decided to sleep in this morning (would have slept a little bit longer, but  Trap the Cat decided to pounce up on the pillow next to me, and start pawing my head).

We have a curent temp of 68 degrees, and going for a high of 78 today.  Low tonight/in the morning, is supposed to get down in the low 50s.  Maybe autumn is coming about three weeks early?  Sure would be nice, for some of you who have had it so unbearably hot this summer.

Wishing everyone a productive, and safe day today, while you're out on errands, weekend 'jobs' (like Larry on the scenic railroad), or just kicking back and enjoying the day.  See you all later on  for our Saturday Night Pizza Fest.

Morning all!

Sorry I haven’t been on this past week. But, I’m back.

Wow. We sure had a washer last evening! There were little cells of rain that when they moved over you…. WOW did it pour. So hard almost that I could barely see the neighbors houses. This morning just a little foggy. 63* right now. Not sure what the high is today. Joe, thanks for breakfast. See you all later.

Good morning. 74 and cloudy in Carolina this morning, whilst the tropical storm off shore makes its way north. It is supposed to hit 90 later today, and usual, the boffins are calling for thunder. We hope to get to Ruby Tuesday later for their rib special. Everybody take care

Off hand, I don't recall if we have any Ruby Tuesday restarurants here.  I'll have to check the restaurant listings in the Yellow Pages.  Whenever we do go out to eat, we've been going to either Applebee's or Bob Evans Restaurants.

Our Saturday Night Pizza Fest is now on the warmer bar.  Your selections for tonight:

1.  Anchovie.  2.  Cheese.  3.  Goetta.  4.  Hawaiian.  5.  Pepperoni/mushroom.  6.  Supreme.  7.  Pepperoni/sausage.  8.  Italian sausage calzones.

For dessert tonight, we have:

1.  yellow cake w/chocolate icing.  2.  Chocolate cake w/chocolate icing.  3.  Vanilla, neopolitan, cookies & cream, Reece's peanut butter cup, Snickers, and peach ice cream.

Enjoy your pizzas, desserts, have a very nice evening, and take care.

Home again...

Hey all, how's it going?  We had a wonderful vacation out west.  Hopefully tomorrow I can start processing some photos, including some from the day and two nights we spent at "railfan heaven" (the Isaac Walton Inn in Essex, Montana), shots of the Kettle Valley RR, which we rode up near Kelowna, BC, and others from various beautiful places between here and Portland, Seattle, and Vancouver, BC, including a couple of famous National Parks.

That sounds like a nice trip. From time to time, we think of interrupting a trip across Montana to spend a night in Essex--but we haven't done it yet.

For the benefit of Joe Koh, it is not only railroad overpasses that attract tall rigs. Today, a rig carrying a diesel fuel storage tank ran into a street overpass north of here, on I-15. Apparently the driver did not stop at the Port of Entry and check on a route that would be safe. Not all of the lanes were blocked, but traffic was slowed down considerably, for several hours, until the damaged tank could be pulled out--the rear end of the tank had to be lifted by a forklift before the tow truck was able to pull the semi-trailer out from under the overpass. Apparently, the driver was moving along somewhat like the hound dog that fell into a barrel of turpentine ("he passed the gate like an eighty-eight, he's moving on").

Johnny, added incentives for spending a night or two there- 1) the Empire Builder actually STOPS there, and 2) you can catch a daily tour bus that runs around the Glacier National Park Loop Road (includes the Going-To-The-Sun road).

Minuses, which may be arguable by some to be additional plusses- no TV or cell-phone service at the inn.

EDIT:  BTW, we stopped in Sioux Falls, SD for lunch today- tried to find a Wendy's to increase the odds of running into a fellow forum member, but had no luck in finding one.  Ended up going to the Culver's on Minnesota St. after running down I-229...

Good Sunday morning, everyone!  It looks like another beautiful day shaping up.  Temp's in the lower 60s  to upper 50s around  the Louisville area, with highs going to the low 70s today.

Brian, sounds like you and Joanie had a fantastic time!!  (But I imagine you're both glad to be home!)

Coffee, juices, other beverages are freshly made, and got plenty of hot water for hot tea.

On the breakfast/warmer bar this morning:  bagels, bear claws, turkey bacon, sausage, biscuits & gravy, or you can have oatmeal or grits along with toast.

Enjoy your breakfast, have a great morning, and everyone take care.

We may be the cool spot this morning.....Earlier, when I first looked, it indicated 56 degrees.  Cloudy today but will be dry.  Sunshine is to dominate next several days and get warmer as the week passes.

Anybody seen Mookie this morning?  Got a couple of questions for her-

1. Did you get over to your favorite spot yesterday?

2. Did you see an eastbound coal train go by with 9290 and 9231 leading, and 9288 bringing up the rear?
