Ok Tom....Have you pin pointed on the map.

In more recent years when we traveled to Florida for winter months, we did still pass down thru S C but arriving in Columbia on I 26, we then would head south on Fed. route 321 on down to near bottom of state, and then out on I 95 to Jacksonville and so on......

Times have sure changed in the schools, Johnny. Like I said, those with permission to drive to school were few and far between.

Permission? We didn't need permission; if a boy somehow was able to have his own car and the money for the gas, he could drive it to school. A small school (a total of 100 in grades 9-12 when I was a senior) had few rules and such. In general, we were governed by common decency.

Tom, you live west of the Coast Line? We drove through Florence on our way to Conway in April of last year, as we were touring some of the Low Country. Of course, that was before I discovered the pleasures of this site.

Good Thursday morning, everyone.  It's a very muggy 75 degrees right now, here in Louisville.  Going for a high of 84 today.  Supposed to be some rain heading in.  Guess we'll have to see how much we get.  Guess I'll go out in a few minutes and water the garden and flowers, just in case we don't get any of the rain in our area.

Coffee, juices, iced teas, lemonades, Gatorades and hot water for hot tea are ready.

On the breakfast bar this morning:  bagels, bear claws, oatmeal, toast, and blueberry mufffins.

If anyone has any requests for lunch/supper, please let me know.  Otherwise, I'll try to think of something.  You all have a good morning, keep as cool as possible, and take care.

Good Thursday morning, everyone.

Uh, CW...  Much as I'd like my work week to be over, my calendar only says Wednesday....

Meanwhile, I'll be over in the corner with my tea and bearclaw.

Larry, I wondered who it would be on here, that would notice I put the wrong day.  When Mutt told me that "I needed to correct my post from this morning", I asked him WHY.  He then told me I had put the wrong day down; I told him that I did it on purpose, to see if anyone actually reads my posts.WinkEvil  Acutally, it was a typo, I didn't realize I'd typed the wrong weekday.  Blush I don't think I'm actually getting Alzheimer's yet, just maybe taking after my mother and sister, in the 'being forgetful' department.

Checking in....Just back from the barber shop....getting the latest on all what's happening around our little town.  Oh, a haircut too.

Overcast and mod. temps this morning....still dry.  Of course we're to have rain / thunderstorms possible sometime today {again}, as yesterday and still none.  Tomorrow too.  Hope when it finally does come it's not damaging.

Tom....As i mentioned yesterday of driving down thru a large section of your State on route 321....We really enjoyed that route down thru there, thru small towns and open country, a rather straight route, and much of the time CSX RR pretty close to the highway.  We could sail down thru that route without much to hold one up even though it was for the most part, a 2 lane road.  Of course meeting the timber trucks occasionally with the long stick logs hanging out over the end of the trailers.

I much preferred it to being over on I 95.  That route, we didn't like.  Danerous.  Our time on I 95 was kept to a minimum.  Just the short stretch across Georgia.

I liked how the RR bisected the little towns we'd pass thru with the old time depots right in the center of town showing they must have been the means of transport out of them years ago.

Speaking of barn fires , this one may be laid to spontaneous combustion.

And last night several fire department responded to a pile of large square bales on fire - apparently about 100 bales were involved.

Quentin - I wonder if the railroad bisecting a town was more due to a station being built and the town growing up around it.  I know there were instances of a station being built "outside" of town, and the town migrated over to the station, leaving the original settlement a shadow of its former self.  But you're right - the railroad was the mode of travel of choice.

I suppose that is much the way it happened Larry....The RR first, the depot, and the town grew and to the point it grew on both sides of the track.

It seems to be so predominant down thru the south as I mentioned  above and one comes into the small settlements and half of the town is here and then the RR and then beyond that, more town....parallel streets to all of it.

I really enjoyed seeing those little settlements as we traveled quite a few times down thru that area.  It being mostly flat down in that area the RR stretched for miles upon end mostly straight and parallel with the route we travelled.

Boy that's a "glowing report"....!  Great photos of on site as it happened.

And it sure looks like the fire co.s were doing the best they could, but against the circumstances not much could be done to prevent the major destruction.

Apparently, It was dependent on who was there first. Many towns were there and the RR came to it. Most place names though, were dependent on the name of the landowner who contracted to have a depot ot stop on his property, and the town if any grew around it. Florence is one example. It was founded by the Wilmington Manchester and Augusta (I think) and was named for thr daughter of the company president. Other non incorporated place names still in use are Howe Springs, Coward, Sranton, Packsville, etc. Some are still in existence, others are just a memory but the name lives on

Finally....an inch and a half of rain here this afternoon.....!  That's the most we've seen in perhaps over a month.  More on the way too as a red line of weather is working across Indiana right now.  Tornado warnings are over various locations as it progresses....and rather fast too.  Hopefully it will weaken a bit before we see it.

Quentin, I'm glad you all managed to get 1 1/2 inches of rain:  we still have gotten zilch this afternoon.  And it's looked several times like it was going to start pouring any minute.

Supper menu tonight:  hamburgers, cheeseburgers, choice of fries, tater tots or onion rings, garden salad.  Dessert tonight:  homemade ice cream in the following flavors:  vanilla, strawberry, peach and chocolate.

Now, I think I'll go warm up our supper here at home.  Everyone have a great evening, stay as cool as possible, and take care.

10-4 on the rain Paula....we sure needed it but now, if the storms are minimum when the red line comes thru in the next hour or so, we'll be in good shape.

Quentin and Tree:

Along with towns growing up around the railroads, the opposite has happened several places out here where the locals got too greedy with taxes, etc and the railroad (and in one case the whole town) left.

Example #1: Bovina, CO to Genoa, CO (Bovina, 1886-1930, is now completely gone and the buildings left as well)  on Rock Island...

Example #2: Coolidge, KS to Syracuse, KS....Santa Fe moved their shops, buildings, everything 10 miles east to Syracuse after Coolidge went wild on taxes in 1890 (Coolidge now has less than two dozen folks, Syracuse was once the Western Division offices and HQ for Santa Fe. Its importance declined at the end of steam and the Syracuse (Western Div.), Las Vegas, NM (NM Division)and Pueblo(Colorado Division) Division Headquarters eventually consolidated at La Junta in 1962-64...

Example #3: Hugo, CO to Limon, CO on UP's old Kansas Pacific Line (more for logistical reasons)

Example #4: Ellis, KS to Oakley, KS on UP/KP for tax and logistical reasons (UP Mechanical Shops building is still at Elllis where Walter Chrysler got his start)

Example #5: El Moro, CO to Trinidad, CO (DRGW)

Sure, I'm certain all kinds of things take place when communities and areas get too greedy with the taxes.

Good Thursday morning, everyone.  Yes, I'm a little bit more awake this morning (which is surprising, since I didn't go to bed until after midnight).  Still looking for the storms and rain showers to come into our area.  Today is the first day of the Kentucky State Fair, so the rain and storms probably will show up.

Coffee, juices, Gatorade, lemonade, iced teas and hot water for hot tea are ready.

On the breakfast bar this morning:  bagels, bear claws and BLTs.

Mookie, got your coffee mug cleaned up and ready to pour you a cup.  How about we meet out in the garden this morning, if you're not getting a downpour, that is.

Everyone have a very nice morning, watch the clouds if you're in the area for the showers/storms, heat, etc., and take care.

Work detail tonight to clean up our training center and memorial for our upcoming memorial service on September 11 - and scattered T-storms are in the forecast.  One will probably park right over the training center (which is on top of a hill - great for lightning, too) when we're supposed to be there...

Aside from a pressing need to mow the lawn, I don't care about Friday - I've got enough to do to keep me busy inside.

Saturday, however, I'm conductor.  Rain brings in the riders, but is tough on the crew.

For now, bearclaw and tea in the corner.

Finally....rain here.  In the last 20 hr's....2", that is the most we've had in one period in maybe 2 months.  We even escaped the storm part as the red line of weather passed late last evening.  Perhaps the lower heat helped dissipate some of the more severe stuff that was coming our way.

A few showers earlier this morning, but right now the sun is out...Possible scattered showers today but the main front is beyond us now.  Low 70's.

On today's menu for this afternoon and tonight:  Barbecued ribs  with baked potatoes, salad, fresh-from-the-garden corn on the cob, sliced red tomatoes, and yellow summer squash.

Well, we finally got some rain this morning.  Only a little bit:  Walt went outside and checked the rain guage, and it only had about three tenths of an inch.  But we do have the possibility of more rain this afternoon, tonight and in the morning.

Have a good afternoon, and I'll see you all later.

Afternoon all.

School is going fine. I do like all of my teachers. Dad goes in for a colonoscopy tomorrow. (You know what they all say, the day before is the worst…)

Boy did we have a night last night. Quinton, I assume that the saver storms didn’t reach you… Boy are you lucky. About 6:00pm the fire scanner lit up like a Track Scamatic! An ACTUAL TORNADO narrowly missed us by a few miles. Only minor damage was reported thankfully. We really doged a bullet there.

CW, BBQ ribs sound delicious!Dinner

Well I will see you all later!

Yes, we lucked on the severe storm line last night Justin....It sure was red coming towards us but the angle it was traveling, it didn't arrive in our area until later and some of the afternoon heat had dissipated which lessened it's severity.  The red had changed to orange and almost yellow on the radar as it passed us.

Just a few dry leaves down in the lawn this morning and a total rain fall for the last 24 ended up being 2.1".....

Justin, you seem to be off to a good start this school year. Listen, ask for help when you need it, and learn all you can on your subjects.

I am sorry to hear that your dad needs a colonoscopy. I have had two, and the day before certainly was worse than the day of the examination. By now, your dad should be over the worst part of the ordeal. I hope his exam is in the morning, so he will not have to go a really long time without food. I wll be praying for him and all who attend him.

There - all my hatches are battened down.  Under a severe t-storm watch till one and the line looks like it's holding together pretty well, so we may get something more than a little rain and thunder out of it.

I'd go to bed, but that's just about a guarantee that we'll get called out for trees down or something....

Good Friday morning, everyone.  We may have gotten a little bit more rain overnight.  When I took the dog out this morning, the garden soil was very noticeably wet!  I didn't hear anything through the night, so it must not have been a very loud storm, if that's what we got overnight.  Right now, we have beautiful sunshine peaking out, and a temp of 70 degrees.  Looks like it's going to be a very gorgeous day around here.

Coffee, juices, lemonade, Gatorade, iced teas and hot water for hot tea are ready.

On the breakfast bar this morning:  muffins:  chocolate chip, blueberry, and oat bran, along with bagels, bear claws; there's also some cake and glazed doughnuts.

Justin, like Johnny said, learn all you can, and do not be afraid/leary of asking any of your teachers for help.  I should have done that myself, when I was in school, instead of being so shy and afraid I'd be considered a dumb idiot.  Fortunately, I did manage to learn some things, just wish I'd been better at a couple of subjects (math and science come to mind).

Everyone have a good morning, keep safe, and take care.
