Good morning from freezing Sacramento, CA. It's 30 degrees F. outside as I type this.
(Grabbing big mug of hot coffee to keep warm)
CW, can you make a new batch of hot beef stew to go along with my regular Saturday request for a Supreme pizza? The entire country is in a deep freeze and we need to warm up.

Talked to my parents last night, mom told me how he "plowed" the driveway. The man owns a Bobcat, a tractor with loader, and a truck with a plow, and all he did was run his truck up and down the driveway a few times, packing down the snow. Probably had to get my uncle to plow the drive again. Wouldn't be surprised if the Town of Burlington had the road graders out yesterday.
Still breezy here, is 26 on my Weatherbug, supposed to get to 30 today, then drop to 10 tonight. Stay warm everyone, see you back for pie later.

My Dad was something of a pioneer in radio broadcasting. What he is most remembered for is that he created a Christmas music program which aired consecutively every year from 1936 to 1990. Traditionally, Dad would go on the air with his two hour show on Thanksgiving and run it through Christmas eve. The name of his program was "Holiday Inn." In 1952, two years before I was born, the big Holiday Inn hotel corporation filed a lawsuit against my Dad because they had the impression that he was using their name without their consent, which wasn't the case at all. Dad had taken the name "Holiday Inn from the motion picture, "White Christmas", starring Bing Crosby and Bob Hope. The hotel corporation and my Dad settled out of court with a gentleman's agreement, and I think that the judge threw this case out. The interesting thing about all this is that in 1978 the inkeeper of our local downtown Holiday Inn asked my Dad to come to work for him as a sales agent, which my Dad did for two years.
My Dad was a good story teller, and he always did a good bit of research into how various pieces of music came into being. I am considering eventually sharing two of the stories that he always told on the air at Christmas time with everyone else in this forum, in printed form. Dad's Holiday Inn programming was always paid for with radio advertising, and many of his sponsors year after year, were our local merchants, including Bechtold Jewelry and Ace Hardware.
My Dad died in August of 1991, due to pancreatic cancer. There was a time when I wanted to follow his footsteps and get into radio broadcasting, and I even took a course in radio in 1982, but being somewhat introverted, I decided that I don't have the kind of "on-the-air" personality that one should have if you are going to be sitting behind a mike in a radio studio.

....Ray, that's an interesting story. Very much enjoyed reading along with it's interesting points.
Yes, Holiday Inn from the movie, very famous....
I encourage you to share in your way of the stories you mention of your dad at Christmas time.
I mentioned in my first post of commerical radio being just 10 years or so old back in your mention of 1936....I say that because of the famous first commerical AM station KDKA was not too far from my home back in western Pennsylvania...It was located in Pittsburgh....and still is currently. A 50,000 clear channel station as they used to say quite often....Perhaps they still do. I assume it still broadcasts at that level....I really haven't heard it at night time for some time as one tends not to choose AM stations currently at night, etc....

Here's the pizza menu for tonight's PIZZA FEST:

I'm going to go with the Hawaiian this evening.
It was another great day today. Because of the wind, I wore a sweatshirt on my walk to the grocery store. What a mistake! It didn't take that long before I took it off.
I've come to the conclusion that the weather here is just too nice. I'm thinking I should move to an area of the country that has a bit more inclement weather.
I need to take a late pizza. Large Goetta and Large cheese.
The wife and I are now proud owners of his and hers KIA Spectra's. We spent most of the day at the dealership today in Lexington.
Everyone have a great Sunday.
Brian (KY)

Good Sunday morning, everyone! It's a nice, CHILLY morning here. Our outdoor temp is around 26, 27 degrees. They say we're running about 15 or so degrees below normal around here.
Joe, thanks for putting the coffee and other hot drinks on, and for making the rolls this morning.
Data Fever, sorry I didn't see your request yesterday for beef stew. It will be on the Sunday Dinner menu for today.
Everyone have a great day, stay warm and stay safe!
Plus single digits this morning. Just got the keyboard thawed so I thought I would check in. Won't complain too much as I figure Ray in Souix Falls is probably in or close to the coldest spot in the country.
Morning all........
After dropping down to 8 this morning, supposed to get to 22, then down to 6 tonight. Truck is plugged in to keep it warm, although I don't intend to fire it up untill tomorrow for work. Jay, I offer no explanation for being warmer, except maybe all the hot air from the politicians in Madison throwing off the readings.
See everyone later, I'll come in for the beef stew, will feel good on a day like this.
Okay, everyone, I've got a BIG, BIG pot of beef stew ready! Along with three large cast iron skillets of cornbread.
For desserts, we have: apple cobbler, blackberry cobbler, peach pie, and pineapple upside down cake.
I hope everyone enjoys their stew and cornbread, and whatever dessert you pick. Stay warm, and stay safe this afternoon.
2 bowls of beef stew for work tonight and some upside down cake to go for work tonight.going to be a chiily 17 tonight.
joe
Got another round of beef stew and cornbread ready. Looks like the pineapple upside down cake went over so well, I've made another one for tonight. And we still have plenty of the rest of today's desserts available, also.
Beef stew and cornbread works for me!
And I'll take some of that upside down cake, no doubt!!!

Exactly; it was a hand, NOT a paw!! Although,I could use an extra one when I'm at
the workbench and three aren't enough!!!!
Datafever; we could invite you to Louisville,Ky. where if you don't like the weather;
wait 10 minutes and it will change; but there are several other cities around that
have the same!!..................Speaking of
Mudchicken; have you,Denver, the Air Farce/Homeland Security gotten things
straightened out with the garage door opener frequencies?!?! Seems there
have been some BIG problems!!!!
Brian (Ky); I'm guessing that with the two cars, one has a Blue & White Paint
Scheme?! Wondering about the other. (or was that L & N and C & O ?!)
Being Crazy, keeps you from going "INSANE" !! "The light at the end of the tunnel, has been turned off due to budget cuts" NOT AFRAID A Vet., and PROUD OF IT!!
Mook; Don't know if UNL has this on their Campus or not, U of L has to
go through this several times a day!!

(not in this shot, but had an SP Unit trailing (patched))
Also heard/saw the the "Huskers" would "Sooner" be "Husked"!!

LM, They didn't have "Heritage" schemes for me to choose from with KIA. I sure wish they did. I think L&N scheme would have been a good look. I did settle with red and wife got light blue.
I will, however, be ordering me another L&N license plate to go on the front. They didn't make room for number boards on it. I'll have to settle with my Ky tags. At least we don't have the stupid smiley sun face anymore.
This is the SP unit I mentioned in my last post. (not a great picture.)
(was very overcast and doing a light drizzle that day.
Which is getting there first?! Not very far from the yard and not far from the aiport!
(Brian, Will your "NEW" license plate say "New Reliable" or "OLD RELIABLE"?!?!)
Good morning! It looks like I'm the first one in the Diner this morning, so I've got the coffee brewing, the orange juice is ready to pour and the hot chocolate is out on the counter.
It's a bit cool here in Sioux Falls, at last report we had a temperature of 29 degrees. It is supposed to drop almost in half within the next hour. Our maximum temperature this afternoon will max out at 27 degrees. With the wind chill, right now it feels like we have an actual temp of -3. It may be a bit colder than this in other parts of the country. I'll be dressing in several layers when I get ready for another day of bell ringing for the Salvation Army.

<~> - gotta da croup again! PND down the back and into the lungs. I have coffed so much my fur hurts! Was going to stay home and be miserable, but since I am not really sick or contagious, decided to come in and let everyone make me miserable here.
Went to James Bond movie this weekend - They do this young man a disservice to call him James Bond. JB was a tuxedo wearing, martini-sipping bon vivant. This young man is more a Steve McQueen - and they should market him that way. Very good movie - little loud, but the Driver & I sit with kleenex in our ears to muffle some of the noise. (geez it's great to get old!)
I enjoyed the movie and the cough drop. (Gag) We see very few movies (at $12 for a matinee for two!) But it was fun and I would recommend it - especially if you enjoy McQueen type movies.
Mutt - our campus has a railroad, just not through it. It skirts the outer edges of the campus and you can hear the whistles all day long - just not see the good stuff. They had to build an overpass (quite convoluted) to cross the tracks and make it safer for the campus citizens that park out in the boonies or live near the tracks.
The SP units are plentiful in North Platte - saw a great many of them when we were there.
CW - may I have some roadrunner broth for my cof? Don't think da chicken will do the trick. Need some pep and energy!
Going to the hammock....put out my do not 'sturb sign. (Don't need to worry - the way I am coffing, no one will 'sturb!")
She who has no signature! cinscocom-tmw
Good Monday morning to one and all! Ray, thanks for getting the coffee on, making the juice, and the hot chocolate. Breakfast is just about ready (or will be when my hands thaw out!) Our temp is 17 this morning.
Mookie, I've got your broth ready for you, and it's right by your hammock.
Breakfast is now just about ready: turkey bacon, sausage, oatmeal, toast, biscuits, sausage gravy, fried taters, scrambled eggs, bagels, and western omelettes are on the warmer bar.
Everyone have a great day, stay safe, and DO NOT DISTURB THE CAT!!
warm then a cold snap= bugs and sneezes coming around.will take some quick breakfast then off to bed for me busy busy at work again.
I might have had Ray beat in the cold department this morning, got down to 6, is now 17, going to about 22 or so today. Great day for comfort food. Should be interesting at work today, we drew for different jobs in our department, I now get to install the air tank, valves, and the air lines that go with it. Should be a good time.
See everyone later.
Since it's so cold outside, I have made another big pot of beef stew, and have also fixed two big pots of chili: one medium, and one hot for our specials today. Everything is now ready to be dished up and eaten. So, enjoy yourselves with lunch. And you also have your choice of PB&J and grilled cheese sandwiches to go with the chili, and baked more cornbread this morning, to go with the beef stew.

Mutt: Err Farce hired consultant to design an "O-F-F" switch, problem solved (for now)......It also played H-E-doublehockeysticks with several local radio repeaters, including BNSF's on Cheyenne Mountain.
In the meantime, the snow and the first real cold snap was causing the usual havoc.
Another beautiful day here in sunny San Jose. Supposed to have showers by the end of the week though.
