Chickens in Choppers? Didn't know they could "fly". (groan for MC and one for me!)

This is so bad, it is funny.

Sarah - what does Pennsy have for wildlife?

BC - Glad you could make it in here. I will drag you back in here again very soon!
Besides - we are getting backlogged on Dew - so Dew it!

Went to favorite spot yesterday - talked to "viewer" (hate foamer) that saw 80 trains in a 12 hour period. I keep telling youse people this is a hot train watching spot. Even if you don't stay for 80, you can spend an hour or two and usually, usually I say, see at least 3-10 trains. Then they take a break and wipe down the tracks, repaint the ties and generally spruce up the place. And start all over again. So Rochelle has a little competition - and we even have a small diamond. About a carat.

Time to hit the swing!

Must rest up for grand finale tomorrow.....

Woo - (that's Moo in Japanese)

Good morning, everyone- good news for the weekend travelers, they're predicting lots of sunshine and highs around 70 for both Saturday and Sunday! Since Rochelle is "downwind" from us for the most part, I would expect the weather there to be the same.

Good Wednesday morning, everyone! Yeah, Brian (KY), the instant taters work
very well at times, don't they?

Brian (IA), it's beginning to warm up again down here, too.

Breakfast is now ready: coffee is ready, juice is made, and we have BLTs for
breakfast this morning. If you don't want BLTs for breakfast, I also have sausage,
sausage gravy and biscuits for breakfast.

Would anyone like to offer any suggestions for lunch today?

I must admit, being downwind from Cedar Rapids can be interesting. If you come through town on US 30 and the wind is from the south, you'll get first-hand evidence of that as you pass the area's #1 smell generator, ADM Corn Sweeteners. Whhheeeeewwwww! The official town motto is "City Of Five Seasons"- many locals modify it to "City Of Five Smells".

Well, the day has come. Granted, we're only headed to Thermopolis today, and will actually get to Yellowstone tomorrow. Still, I won't be at work! Woo hoo!

Carl, hope you get to feeling better. You'll be in my prayers.

Mook, hope you and Driver have a good trip back to my old stompin' grounds. Have a good safe trip!

Well, I have to finish a bid so I can hit the road. Will talk to you all later.

Chris, have a safe trip.

Hmmm, since no one gave me any suggestions for lunch, you're stuck with what
I'm fixing for lunch: tuna salad sandwiches, BLTs and fries.

Have very thin rib eye steaks w/cream of mushroom soup, mushrooms, and onions
in the Crock Pot for supper tonight.

mmmm - count me in for lunch - love Tuna!

Brian(IA) the driver used to live in CA - he can tell you about Paramount after 5! You can probably imagine it!

Lincoln has had its share - as a kid, we had Salt Creek for waste water, Swingle's for rendering and Lincoln Pack (slaughter) You didn't want to enter the city from the west!

Ah the good old smells!

Morning All

I worked 3rd shift last night getting off at 6 am. After walking the dog and having breakfast Duchess let me get about a 2 to 3 hour nap. So I am up and (somewhat) going now. [B)]

Carl, best wishes for your well being.

Chris, enjoy your trip.

Well I don't know if I am coming or going today so I guess I better "find" myself. [B)]

Thank you all for the warm welcome. I'll pop in as I can but this is the height of my busy season.
The heavy rain here in central new England has stopped for now and we're seeing glimpses of the sun. They're promising us showers off and on through the weekend.

I will meet Brian at Rochelle and he will be carrying a stick to fend off the miffed cat!

(he can borrow the drivers!)

Scuta - central NE - you are in Tree country. Sans rain, I wish I was, too!

Went home at noon yesterday (had gone in at 3:30 for a contractor). Drove from sun to downpour to sun a couple of times, then mowed the back yard (after a brief nap). Rained most of today, but less than a half inch so far and stopping soon.

Time to head for home.

Mookie you wanted to know what kind of wildlife PA has. Well, it's very hard and the list would be very long if I make an attempt to name every single creature PA has. I will tell you that PA is very well known for it's White Tailed Deer, and that was what I took a picture of yesterday. Here it is!

Speaking of PA wildlife, I went over to my friend's farm today and got knocked down by more PA wildlife both of my friend's 110 lbs German Sheps, jumped right on me. I go to the ground then get licked to death. Then the farm cat jumped on my back, Mookie did you send relatives over to attack me today?? (just kidding) [:D]

No comment about smells from rendering plants.

Will say that supper is now ready. If anyone wants something extra with their
steak, I've got broccoli, peas, lima beans, corn, and boiled potatoes that have
been mashed (or smashed as some of you say) with plenty of cream and butter
in them.

Well here, at last, is my contribution to the Depot Diner & Coffee Shop. I better file it now before this thread explodes from being stuffed with too many messages!

One day, during September 1967, both the W.P. and the Espee suffered a derailment somewhere in Nevada. This incident caused me to be stranded in the D.& R.G.W.'s Glenwood Springs, Colo. for quite sometime because The California Zephyr, my ride back home to Illinois, was stuck behind the derailment. A D.& R.G.W. passenger extra hauling no. 18's equipment finally arrived 16-hours and 45-minutes late, I boarded, and as it pulled out of the depot I thought "To h*ll with this! I think I'll catch tomorrow's train instead because at least that set of equipment should arrive Chicago Union Station more or less on time."

The next stop was Bond, Colo. where I was maybe the only revenue passenger to get off. I left my luggage with the operator and walked across the tracks to have breakfast in the railroad beanery, and a great breakfast it was: ham-n'-eggs, hashbrowns, orange juice, toast, and coffee with tax and tip: 85-cents! Boy was that good eatin'!

A few hours later D.& R.G.W. no. 9 arrived. That day's Yampa Valley Mail included a lone F9, a streamlined, ex-Prospector, Rio Grande R.P.O. (sans mail contract), and one of those magnificent W.W.1 era ex-Northern Pacific heavyweight coaches decorated in the Grande's passenger colors. Full from breakfast, I caught my second wind as this vest pocket passenger train made its way through the Ruby Mountains and then nuzzled next to the Yampa River grade to continue its journey westwards. I rode it to the end of the line at Craig, Colo.

The next morning I caught the corresponding train no. 10 to Denver where I made connection after about a two hour layover with the Q's no. 18. I certainly made the right decision in taking that little detour along "The Moffat" because nos. 9 and 10 remain among the most memorable standard gauge railroad journeys I've ever made!

Good Thursday morning everyone. Joe, thanks for putting the coffee on, and
making the juice.

Cannonball, apology accepted.

Narig01, [#welcome] to the Depot Diner! We're always glad to see new people
come in and join us here.

Regular breakfast menu is ready this morning.

Mookie, after your trip to Chicago, think you'll come down this way sometime?

Sarah - as I told Mutt it is a good thing you didn't rattle a candy sack. You would have probably had deer all over you. Had that happen when I was kid on vacation in the mountains. My grandmother loved the old big pink peppermints and would eat them the whole time we were traveling. We stopped on a mountain road to see a doe standing beside the road. I was the closest to the doe and Grandma reached in and rattled the sack getting a mint. The deer about ran me down trying to get to that sack.

Maybe it was from the breed "Tourist Deer".

Packing all done. Have landlord talked into putting out fresh water for the birds. Have a new bird that has been visiting the water lately. The large orange and white one I think I told you about. About 9-10 pounds. Blackbirds were discussing something with it last nite. Something about directions to the nearest exit.

Brian - bring tripod - leave camera.

Joe - I saw you were making coffee, but couldn't wait -our custodian was a little earlier than you and while his coffee is barely drinkable - it is coffee.

CW - After a trip to Rochelle I have no clue when or where we will ever go next. But I will definitely put you on the list. Our last vacation was a fly fishing trip to Wyoming for the Driver, so will probably have to do something for him next time. Even tho I was not fly fishing, it is hard to beat the Wyoming weather in August, sitting on a big porch in the shade, in an oversized rocking chair - watching the hummingbirds. Just sittin' and grinnin'.

Will check in before I leave the building later today.

(now about that chocolate cake that I am taking with me......)

A Late Morning All

After my last two crazy days I got some sleep last night. [^]

But the bad news is . . . it is my Monday. [:(]

Weatherwise it is going to hit 85 today and 91 tomorrow. Summer is trying to come in. I was really enjoying having Spring for a change.

Well schools are starting to get out, and just in time too. Zach and his daddy will be in Arkansas next week for the 844. We will meet and take a little tour of some railroad related items, with a railroad employeed host of course. [;)]

I got to see both the northbound and southbound Texas Eagle Tuesday/Wednesday night. Third shift for me started at 10 pm Tuesday and ended 6 am Wednesday.

Well I must go, got some things to do.
