I heard a train today at work and I could tell it was only lest than 1/2 mile away. I wanted to go chase it but I was in the middle of taking off pipes on a darn school bus exhaust, which was murder all together. I was assigned to do four buses today and I only got one done because, I didn't have guidelines, nor did I have all the correct parts. I also had to cut two of the pipes down because they were too long. Go figure.

Actually got some rain in Madison today, unfortunately it all came down at once, and flooded out a few streets. Hope it helps the corn along some.

Sarah, International buses? I used to do quite a few of them, I think we averaged changing out all the exhausts about once a year. Once all the parts showed up from IH, we could knock one out in about 1-1/2 hours. We also usually kept an entire exhaust on hand for quick turnaround (drop bus off in morning and it's ready for the afternoon route).

Looks like I'll be getting back into working on trucks again, either fixing them for Capitol Warehousing in Windsor or building trailers in Stoughton for (who else?) Stoughton Trailers. Should do me some good.

You'll have to see CW about the menu, although she is open to other
ideas. Yours doesn't sound too bad,but I imagine that 'desert' shake is
a bit on the 'dry side'.[swg]

Hope everyone's enjoying the breadless BLTs tonight. That was so good.
Got the idea from the Kraft Kitchens website. But, where they had uncooked
bacon, I cooked it in the microwave, and broke it up. Mutt had his bacon on
the side, with his salad.

Now all I have to do, is think of cool, refreshing menus for tomorrow's lunch
and supper.

Andrew,

I'm glad you can 'dance' around like that;if we did that here right now,
We would pobably pass out from heat exhaustion !!
Right now,our temp. is around 90-91;with the heat index approaching 100 !!

Will be glad to see some cooler temps. but I believe we are going to have
to wait until at least late next week. Our forecasters are calling for the temps
to be in the high 90s for this weekend, with H.I. going up comparably.[:(][xx(]

Yeah the temp is looking a little bit better around here and more rain is on the way. But we would need about. 5inches of a good rain to put a big dent in our drought that we go going on here. The temps are going to be low 70's to mid 80's tomorrow which will feel realllllly good for a change. Hey maybe I'll be the 1st one to start on page 387 which will be a 1st for me. [:D][:D]

CW I think I'll take some of that salad now. I'm glad I'm able to have some BLT stuff tonight since I missed the BLT's with bread yesterday. ( I think it was yesterday). I 'm going to go with the Tropical Punch too for a drink.

Temps here are delightful today - what a summer day should be all about. High, puffy clouds, a gentle breeze, humidity livable, temp around 80. Sooooooo nice after all that humidity.

The salad sounds good (again). I'll have mine with some garlic bread and a Vernors over crushed ice...

We're having BLTs without the bread. In other words, it's a garden
salad, with bacon that's been fried (or zapped in the microwave), and
broken into pieces in the salad.

Just checked our local temp: 90 degrees, with humidity reading of
57%. At least the sun's gone in behind the clouds right now. Not
like when I went to the post office with my neighbor: sun was shining
real good.

Joe, you know we always have fries for Matt.

Tom, call the fries whatever you want: just come in and EAT!!

Jay, have a "good" time on the farm. Miss being on the farm, even though it
was a very small farm. Always had things to do this time of year. Beginning
to can vegetables for the winter, hoeing the garden, cutting grass, making sure
the cow, dog, cats had enough water.

Supper tonight: how about a BLT without with the bread? Will make a huge
garden salad with plenty of bacon and tomatoes in it. Also stocked up on
lemonade, tropical punch, and have plenty of iced tea made up.

WHERE IN THE WORLD IS MOOKIE?!?! Haven't seen her in
here all morning!

Yes, I did remember to shut down the layout. Don't want to be the cause of a brown-out.

I am taking a few days up north on the farm, so will probably be just passing by to grab a cup of coffee to go. See everybody later.

Well, looks like the Diner's been empty overnight, since Jay left a little
after midnight. Jay, glad to see you turned off the train layouts before
you left. Thank you, kind sir!!

Breakfast this morning: toasted BLTs and cantalope. Going to have to
get some watermelon at the store. We need to stock some up in the
cooler to have on these hot, hot, hot days.

Lunch today will be soup and sandwiches: beef vegetable and your
choice of these sandwiches: pb&j, tuna, ham salad, turkey salad or
grilled cheese. Found out you can make good grilled cheese on the
George Foreman Champ grill. Mutt and I use ours quite a bit.

Will open the floor to suggestions for supper menu.

I personally use an airplane to reach altitudes in the 14,000 foot range. Much easier - just sit back and look out the window at the scenery. My highest climb ever was the Peaks of Otter on the Blue Ridge Parkway - which isn't exactly a difficult trek. Something like 1,500 feet of elevation gained over a mile and a half of trail.

The grass was definitely greener on the other side of the river (Kankakee River, that is!). We made our pilgrimage down to the Vermilion County Museum in Danville today, to see Pat's quilt and accompanying blue ribbon. It was the first quilt one comes across when entering the door!

I didn't see many trains close-up. Only four--and they were all the same one! A coal train, with UP power (C44AC/SD9043AC) and DLRX/CIPX/CAEG gons, headed south on CSX--first blocked us at Watseka; we caught up to it by Rossville, and, after we'd been to the Museum, we saw it arriving Danville and departing a short while later at a different location.

Freight Car America was a sea of aluminum coal gons and hoppers--at a rough guess I saw at least 300 brand-new cars in there! Most were not close enough to the periphery to enable me to see their numbers or reporting marks.

They've had more rain, but today they were just as hot as we were--getting readings of low 90s off the radio from Chicago, and seeing the same thing at local banks.

Tomorrow we're off again--this time to a well-deserved retreat in western Michigan. I'll be out of touch for the better part of a week. There are no railroads remaining in the county where the cottage resides, and I'd be extremely lucky to catch trains on any of the tracks we do see. No computer access, either, and limited cell-phone service. I will, as usual, be bringing my bike with me for some possible trips along old rail-trails.
