http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=38.265377,-85.738420&spn=0.010147,0.019773&t=k&hl=en
Was it abandoned by PC or Conrail ?
Is it going to be used for anything, rapid transit or a bike trail ?

The bridge in question,is the old "Big 4" bridge. It had been abandoned before
I moved here in '73;and the approaches on both sides were still in place, they
were taken out around 1975. As of right now,the bridge belongs to the city
of Louisville, and is to be made into a walking/bike path, with some small shops
on it. The Lou. side is to have circular walkways built from "Waterfront Park";
In. side is still up in the air. The last I've heard,it is to be operating (?) by 2008.

And I believe the "Diner" is" VIRTUALLY" where ever you want it to be.[:)]

To all who responded about the Elevator pics...thank you so much for your kind words.[:I] In truth I just changed the sig. photo to keep a fresh look to the sig. I didn't really think this one would get a lot of attention...he he he

Well, we were back up in the 80's today. Sigh...it was a nice break. Can all my Illinoisan buddies see if they can find some nice cool weather while I'm back there (Oct. 11-17)? Thanks!

Well, must be off for the evening. Might head up to East Portal this weekend if I get a chance. Will share some pics if I make it there.

Mel Patrick is a frequent contributor to Trains and is reknown for photos that capture the play of light, both natural and artificial, on railroad structure and equipment. I think he would agree that your photo is a nice example of the art.

You might want to offer it to Bergie for Photo of the Day.

Good morning everyone. Joe, thank you for getting the coffee started, and fixing the juice.

Chris, that is a very good photo. I second Joe's idea of sending it to Trains Magazine.

Saturday brunch will be: your choice of sausages, biscuits and gravy, or pancakes
with your choice of sausage or bacon with them, along with any kind of syrup, or whatever
you like on your pancakes.

...Referring to the "NYC bridge" mentioned above....For years {when heading south}, driving across the Ohio river at that spot on I-65 and peeking over at that abandoned bridge I've wondered what will become of it and how long it might stand there without any "attention" of maintenance, etc....and passing under it in a boat some years ago noting the immensity of it and how awesome it appears and no approaches in place to either end.....makes it look so out of place. One wonders how railroads afforded to build such structures in years past. I'm glad to hear {Walt}, indicate it may see some use as a trail in upcoming years....

Good morning from Burlington, WI all.....

Spent nine hours chopping corn yesterday, untill I got tired of resetting the circuit breaker for the work lights. The chopper needed a break anyway. Managed to fini***he first bag and got about nine loads into the second. What the corn lacks in quality it sure makes up for in quantity! I was in the lowest gear the tractor has, and still occasionally was plugging up the two-row corn head.

CW, I'll take a big stack of pancakes w/ maple syurp, and sausages. The tractor will take 50 gallons of #2 diesel and the chopper will take a grease job. I'm hoping to get the second silage bag finished today, and started on the third.

Chris.......That is a very good picture, and I'm going to have to go along
with the others that are saying submit it to Trains.

naniamo73 and Modelcar, after doing a bit of research this morning,
I'm finding that the last rail traffic over that bridge was in 1969.
Guess that would be after the merger, and they just used the Pennsy
bridge into town from the In. side.
NYC still had a small engine terminal, with a turntable; downtown in
in the 1970s.....believe they shared it with the C & O.
(that entire area is now a part of "Slugger Field")

Thanks. The February 1995 Railfan has a good article about L&N in Louisville and Louisville's Union Station and mentions NYC and IC had their own Central Station along the river. Amtrak never used this bridge but did use the other two. Is the ex PRR bridge now owned by Louisville and Indiana only used by LIRC ?

....Walt, thanks for the bit if info on that NYC bridge this morning....It is an interesting subject to see magnificent structures such as that one but sad to understand it's not being used anymore.....The strength of such units is such it probably would last another hundred years if it's pilasters stay under it....It's a shame they can't be moved to someplace where good use could come from it on another RR....I'm sure that would be cost prohibitive. We have a double span through girder bridge here in Muncie that's set abandoned since about 1970 and it looks like it will stand for a hundred years yet if it's supports stay under it.....{Ex. Pennsylvania RR}.

As near as I can tell, that's the way it is;Kathi Kube might be able to give
you some better info. on that,as she was down last year getting some
material on the L & I for a possible upcoming article on them.
I was downtown about a week and a half ago,and did see a CSX train
on the Ky. approach,I know the engines were up to about the river, but
I couldn't tell if they went on across or not.

Just an FYI to all;there's plenty of Pizza left,so some of you late "snackers"
can have it tonight, and any early risers can have breakfast pizza,
with their coffee and juice in the morning.[:D][8D]

Ah, Sarah.....

I can tell you're not too familiar with farm operations. I was chopping FIELD CORN, not SWEET CORN. You really do not want to try to eat field corn, the seed companies hybrid this stuff for better silage yield and more grain quality and quantity. Besides, this time of year, the field corn has dented, matured, and is drying down. I guess the stuff we were putting up was going in at about 60-65% moisture, which is good for silage. You can tell the difference between field and sweet corn by the looks, sweet corn has shorter, thinner stalks, usually only about 6-8 feet tall in good ground. Field corn is taller, some varieties are known to push 18-20 feet for silage hybrids, and the stalks are thicker. If planted at the same time, the sweet corn will usually tassel and have ears ready first, and by this time of year, the plant will pretty much be dead.

Anyway, I was out chopping for about 10 1/2 hours today, got about a third to a half into the third and last bag, with no breakdowns. (Okay, I did break a shear pin, but that's just minor.)

CW, the pizza sounds REALLY good, but my mom made a great batch of pepper steak up tonight, so I'll pass. See y'all later.

Gee Randy, know I can handle your order for sausage and pancakes. But:
don't think I have enough grease in the Diner to send you for the lube job.
And no, we don't carry diesel fuel for the tractor. Maybe you'd better contact
RFD-TV: maybe they've got extra they can send you all[:-,][:-,]

And speaking of breakfast, we'll have MORE pancakes and sausage, and
plenty of biscuits and gravy, and scrambled eggs.

Joe, For Better or For Worse is really truthful today. There's certain modelers
I know of who don't want to share.

Good Morning,

Yesterday, two other security guards and myself manned a barricade at the parade making sure nobody went down the street that wasn't supposed to. Very interesting for the most part because at one point, we started having to direct traffic on the street. I did it for the most part so essentially I was a traffic cop without a gun.

I kind of felt sorry for some of my collegues who had to go to the event and deal with rowdy drunks and brawlers. The Grape and Wine Festival is a great one but there are always those who just come to try and spoil it for everybody else so our jobs were to keep it from happening to the best of our ability.

I might volunteer to help out and do that as soon as I get information on the parade hours just because especially after the grand parade (Sept.24) at night-time in the park, law enforcement needs as many hands as possible because the rowdy and the drunks don't just stay in the park, they go all over the downtown and start throwing crap at windows and getting into fight with anybody they come in contact so our poor police force will have their hands full with that.

I am going to have to practice holds, throws and other non-lethal martial arts moves just in case. I just hope it won't be neccessary to use them-too much paper work afterwards.

CW- that's my favorite Sunday buffet. I'll have 2 of everything.[bow] Was wondering about our resident train soldier Mark. Heard they blew up a rail line in Iraq. But found him on another forum this morning and he's safe.
We've got a Grandaughter birthday party today, so if there's any extra cake I'll bring it back. Have to save some for Mookie though.
Spend the rest of the day prepping for trip to Portland OR for nieces wedding this weekend. Not looking forward to flying. Too many bad memories of flying in helicopters in 70-71. I wanted to take a train out, but wouldn't fit into time frame from work.
See we've got 2 more tropical depressions in Caribean headed this way. Will it never end?
Chris., if you're coming to IL in Oct, perhaps we can get together. Know some great photo ops, but can't take pics. I'll drive and you shoot. Email off line for info.

Great breakfast CW! Now I'm stuffed. Hope I've got room for cake and I SCREAM.
Be back later, I think this is going to be a nap day. Willy
