Well,as CW said, we HAD a rain shower, fairly heavy for about 15 min. or so.
wound up with about 3-4/10" in the gauge;temp. went from 86 to 80,now back to
82,sun came out brightly. And of course you know what the humidity did!

Happy Birthday Chad [bday] Hope you have a great one!!!!

Congrats to CW on obtaining her 5th star;Well Deserved!!!! [bow][C=:-)][bow]

Willy, don't think I could have tied her to the chair, somehow shes got the dog
on her side, and 'dog' probably would have untied her.

Boy this is getting harder to write in here because you all have good storyies to tell and I only have one but I am sure you have already seen it. If not then i'll tell it . When I was little I got to move an Amtrak train into the station and the reason for that was I was apart of that big brother program and they though getting me on a train would work and weel it did. But anyway getting to move an amtrak train was the coolest thing ever and I hope one day. I get to do something like that again.

And we didn't realize that this is a 5 Star diner! It's not raining here in Az where we are and the temp in Tucson is about 108.
Congratulations and thanks for all the wonderful posts on the train forum!

Railfan619 congrats on your fist star. [:D]

Ok I went to school today and took my in class essay (test) on is it right for the Philadelphia school district to dedicate African American History as an entire course, as a requirement to graduate high school. I got my paper back on Amtrak's Acela and I got a A plus, thankx Carl for the wonderful editing skills!!!!!! Then I went to the gym which was beyond packed, then I went to Whole Foods Market for some food products, then I drove home (On the way home I drove my truck at 40mph through a huge puttle of water and I got my truck all wet!! That was fun, and a the people behind me thought I was nuts. But hay when you have a 6 inch lift on your truck you can do things like that lol) and got on the computer. Pretty exciting stuff huh??/ lol

Carl yes it was interesting that both of us were in the Diner eailer today. Ya know I was late to class because I was in here. I didn't really care though.

Hey I know that is a fun thing to do. I did it all of the time when. I would be driving my
bus I always aimed for the biggest puddles and of course people would look at me like
I was nuts but hey. It was fun and that's all that counted.

Water! Need Water! Despite the weather supposedly being a little cooler today, you can't prove it by me. Of course two hours in firefighters gear this morning didn't start my day off any too well. My morning commute was interrupted by a structure fire in a neighboring district - 4th on scene, but no engines yet. We kept it down some with extinguishers until the engine did arrive and we could put some real water on it. Still smoke and water damage throughout the place, and a real mess around where it apparently started.

By the time we got done I was soaked to the skin. And I never handled a hose (chief's perogative - I did do the television interview, though).

Decided to take the rest of the day off from work, too. Of course as I napped mid afternoon, a gentleman failed to notice a stopped car ahead of him so we were back out again to deal with that. The funny part of that one (no one was hurt, by the way) was that the tailgate of the truck had the name and number of a well-known NASCAR driver on it - we joked about his having drafted a little close.

Sitting back and waiting for number three....

Speaking of Milwaukee's Sumerfest and food, one of the featured treats is roasted corn-on-the-cob. The corn is cooked in a mechanical roaster with the husks on. The husks will singe during roasting and give the corn a bit of a nutty flavor. Just before serving, the husks are peeled back and the cob is dipped in a bucket of melted butter. Fine dining.

The back story. One of my fellow mutuel clerks at the dog track was Charles, an African-American from Milwaukee. Charles was a laid back guy, friendly and easy going. When it was getting close to post time for a race and lines were starting form at the windows, most of us would start punching real fast so people could get there bets in before the bell. Not Charles. He had one speed and if you were in his line and got shut out when the race started-well, that's just the way it goes.

Charles wasn't a kid, but you really couldn't tell how old he was. From conversations with a neighbor and friend of his who came to work at the track with him, I had learned that he had a large family. She told me that all of his children were successful in their various endeavors and he was well liked and admired in their neighborhood.

About this time of the year, I was working a window next to Charles and asked if he was going to be scheduled to work every shift over the long 4th of July weekend. He told me no, because he had the roast corn stands at Summerfest and would be there. I was interested and he told me about the set-up, how he hired younger kids from his neighborhood and they had to work well. To early for midwest sweet corn, he had it trucked in from Florida. "So, how's it go", I ask. "Oh, if the weather is dry and attendance is up to par, we'll sell about 75 to 80 thousand ears."

THAT, my friends, is at $1.00 per ear. And one buck is about what you will pay for a bakers dozen at a farm stand. Lesson: Never underestimate the busines skills of someone, even if he is working a low wage part time job at a dog track.

Some time past, and Charles decided he had enough fun at the track and he quietly left the job. About a year after that, an Obit from a Milwaukee paper reported he had died, as I recall, at about age 75. In the summertime, I don't have some fresh grown sweet corn on the cob without thinking of Charles.

Good morning, everyone. Looks like it's going to be another HOT
one for all of us, again today. [:(] We are "supposed" to get a good rain
sometime tonight: up to about an inch of rain! Won't that be nice, IF it will
cool things down.

Breakfast this morning will be: sausage, biscuits and gravy, peaches &
cream oatmeal, and toast. Also have some cantalope slices.

Lunch today will be: tomatoes stuffed with tuna salad, hamburgers and
cheeseburgers w/french fries.

Will get back with you around 2 with the supper menu. Still thinking on
that one.[C=:-)]

IT'S RAINING, IT'S POURING, THE OLD MAN WAS SNORING! I finally figured it out. No rain dances, no cloud seeding. ( I was going to have a friend with a ultralight drop bags of ice into the sky over town) Just plan an early morning fishing trip with friends. Works every time. Only going to last for a couple of hours. Don't know if it'll make it to Jay and CW and Mutt
Biscuits and gravy CW. Need a good meal before we hit the boat. I've gained about 6 pounds since I've been off with knee. Must be all the good food here in the Diner. Wait a minute, it wouldn't be sitting here in the chair on compu.............. Nah, it's the food.
Mook- sounds like you had Auntie Em time again yesterday. Paws over eyes and repeat
" There's no place like home"
Jay- Nice story, we all have that one person in our livesthat don't do anything spectacular to change the world, but hold a special spot in our heart. What's the entertainment lineup for summerfest. Am going to Charlie Daniels at Clinton Ia festival on Friday. Have humped equipment (stagehand) for Charlie's midwest dates for about 15 years, have got to know the band pretty good. Charlie's a hoot. Got access passes in mail in April, so I better make use of them. Knee won't allow humping of equipment, so can actually go enjoy the show. Mama's looking forward to a little R&R after the last month of rehab with daughter.
Well going to go outside and play in rain. GOOD GRAVY CW! [bow] Stay cool! Willy

Tree - Good looking men always get to do the television interviews! All our firefighters are extremely handsome - police aren't too bad, either - but you know - they are hiring so many young ones any more....

Jay - Buccaneer? Love good home-grown sweet corn. Don't see those stands as much any more!

Sarah - congrats on the star and the A. The A will get you farther!

Willy - we had straight line winds - south of our fair city just a few miles. We got nothing - didn't even disturb the trees! Tore down some out buildings and damaged crops and trees! We really do live in the land of Nod - move your head one way or t'other
-nod- and you miss the storm....

I am off the rest of the day - have out of town company from Calif. They came back here to see if Nebraska really was on the other side of I-5......

More tomorrow....
