Question for you, Larry:  it looked like, from the map on The Weather Channel, Lake Erie is about to completely freeze over.  Being the smallest of the Great Lakes, that's not too surprising.  Would that affect your snowfall?  Or are you more under Lake Ontario's effect?

We're chiefly under the effect of Lake Ontario:

That's the current radar image at 8AM on Saturday.  I live just above the "E" in "Watertown".  I have blue skies over the house - Watertown and south are probably getting an inch of snow an hour or more. There is a travel advisory in place.

Given the proper wind direction (WSW) it's possible that we could get additional enhancement from Lake Erie, but it doesn't happen very often and Lake Erie would probably have to be open.  We have seen enhancement from Georgian Bay (Lake Huron) carry into our area with a strong weather system.

While Lake Erie freezes completely over almost every year, Lake Ontario has done so only twice in recorded history (the native Americans didn't keep that kind of records...), so lake effect can occur even late in the season.

Yesterday (Friday) evening the winds lined up nicely right along the lake, bringing snowfall amounts of 2" and even 3" an hour into the area between Oswego and Central Square.   Again, I had clear skies.

....We are getting warm...!  Heat wave.  12.6 degrees now, and that's the warmest for several days.  Suppose it is to be up in temp for us now.  Believe in the mid 20's today.  40% chance of a little snow....maybe an inch from what they were saying last evening....Cloudy skies now.

Everyone have a good weekend.

Woo-hoo- both of my digital readouts here at home say 18.5 degrees and rising- a heat wave indeed!

Very nice shot, Chris.  One of these days I'm going to find time to get the Rebel out and take a few pictures.

For a change, it's cold in Carolina. An hour before sunrise, officially, it's 17 and clear, with a projected high of 38 today. I sat up with the wireless, which it turns out was a waste of time, so will hit the rack shortly. First, I will open the place.

For breakfast, you have a choice of buttermilk pancakes, blueberry waffles, sausage pig-in-a-blankets, or ham sandwiches, along with bacon, link sausage, scrambled eggs or oatmeal. Beverages include soft drinks, fruit juices, coffee or your choice of tea. Sorry for the lack of diversity

Enjoy, stay warm and safe and have a great weekend.

Tom, thanks for the breakfast. No grits, though?

I checked on the internet for weather in your part of the country, and found that it supposedly was a low of 23, currently 27, and an expected high of 38 where I grew up. I was amazed to find a report from a small town (698 in 1950, and not much more now). And the same site showed 27, 34, and 38 for Florence and 26, 28, and 35 for Charlotte. Can you really trust such a site?

I was out a couple of hours ago, and the Wasatch Mountains were not anywhere nearly as distinct as they were two days ago. We may have some snow next week, and the prognostication (I am not sure how much gnosis there really is in that) is that we will have a good snow a week from tomorrow.

Well, it is 34 here with 38 projected. Not sure what the 27 refers to, tho. If I was you, I'd get the weather channel desktop weather and then you just enter the location or zip code and get the official data. Florence has turned into a town that has outgrown its roots. A whole bunch of expatriates have moved in and clogged roads, changed values and  made movement difficult. I remember things from 1950 that were in cornfields or woods, and now are shopping centers or housing developements. Just too crowded for a country boy. Florence has double it's size in the past few years. I once worked for the city and saw a dead possum in the streat in front of the City-County Complex. Any town with a dead possum in front of city hall is still a country crossroads.....

BTW, the weather boffins say we may get a touch of snow Sunday night.

That band in the image I posted earlier dropped upwards of a foot of snow in Watertown.  Had I waited for an hour to head for town I would have avoided it.  What a mess.  Stopped at the home supply big box and had to park right in front of the store - the lot had a foot of snow in it.  All this time the sun was still shining at my house.

The band drifted north and left 2-4" in my driveway, but it's over for now.

Tom, your mention of the dead possum reminds me of the mother possum carrying her young that I saw at the Southern station in Charlottesville, in June of 1959, while I was waiting for the Peach Queen to come in so I could go down to Charlotte. She walked across the property as though it were the place for her to be. I trust the dead possum was picked up soon after it was seen.

It's supposed to snow here Sunday night, according to the weatherguessers, but just a dusting. The last time they called for a dusting, we had 22", so I guess it's time to hit the stores for food and batteries......

Hey, Grampaw, you back on your feet now or do you still have that foot elevated? Ah you just have to love this cool spell. Every time I catch myself complaining about it I think about that old hot, humid May, June, July, August, and September that will be here before I'm ready for it. But, at least I hope to be working a full 40 hour week during the warm months as opposed to the 32 I'm getting now, assuming the landscape company I work for is able to weather (no pun intended) the current economic storm. Having faith does help!

Y'all don't eat too much and don't forget to pick up a few candles when you get your batteries- buy a lot, it's good for the economy!

Running a little bit behind schedule, but:  the pizzas are now on the warmer bar.  Tonight's lineup:

1.  Canadian bacon; 2.  Chicago style;  3.  Goetta;  4.  Hawaiian;  5.  Pepperoni/mushroom;  6.  Anchovie;  7.  supreme; 8.  Italian sausage calzones

Things are warming up here in the Louisville area.  Our high today was 37, 38 degrees.  Only supposed to get down to the low to mid 20s tonight.  Everyone take care, and have a good evening.

Joe, I envy you all of those trains going through town.  In our post-work time in beautiful downtown Lombard (supper and a store) we had only four trains:  a pair of scoots and a couple of short stacks.

Temperature was up today, but so was the wind--gave us more switch problems than we had during the deep freeze.

Chris, I was remiss in not complimenting you on the shot of Aurora.  Nice sky!  I think the city got covered with a glacier at one point since you were there, though.

Good Sunday morning, everyone.  We have a very nice temperature of 37 degrees this morning.  Looking for a cloudy day, but at least it's warmer this morning.

Coffee, juices, hot chocolate, hot water for tea and hot cider are all ready for everyone; and on the warmer bar this morning:  leftover pizza and homemade cinnamon rolls.

I hope everyone has a very good morning, those who are going to Church this morning:  drive safely, and anyone going anywhere else (work, whatever), please drive safely also.  Does anyone have any requests for Sunday Dinner?

Vegetable soup and corn bread would be mighty fine, I think. I'm sitting here trying to catch a Jim Rice interview on the MLB channel but the audio is garbled, darn it!  Another hectic Sunday in the making where we do our part to support the oil companies: Go to church, Go to lunch, Go to Wallyworld, Go visit the daughter, granddaughter, and son-in-law, and, about 9;30 pm, Go home. My better half gets to play cheerleader. But I dig it, although there's no time for trains. Y'all throw another log on the fire and have a nice day.

Hey, Grampaw, you back on your feet now or do you still have that foot elevated?

Well, I am trying to keep it up, but find I drift off to sleep and the wife fusses at me when I do. I am supposed to soak it twice a day and the wife fusses at me when I don't....

Presently38 and overcast in Carolina. Looks like we shall get some rain soon. I think a nap is in order.

About a half inch of snow overnight that blowed around a bit....21.6 for temp right now...Better than the Aritc stuff we've had for a few days.  looks like temps similar to this will prevail this coming week.  Some snow flurries being talked about but no big weather systems to "track" thru here.

Best to all.....

Well, looks like only one suggestion for r Sunday Dinner.  So, here is our Sunday Dinner menu:

1.  A fresh pot of vegetable beef soup w/cornbread; 2.  Sloppy joe sandwiches w/fries or potato chips; 3.  turkey club sandwiches w/fries or potato chips;

We are currently getting a nice light snow shower, nothing too heavy.  Supposed to only be a dusting to maybe a half inch accumulation by tonight.

Everyone enjoy your meal, have a good afternoon, and take care.

Another quiet, albeit chilly, day out here. Going in to church this morning, we could barely make out the Wasatch because of the smog/haze. It was no better when we came home.

Yes, Tom, when your wife tells you to soak your foot, do it! Just don't move her to tell you to soak your head.

Annual checkup for me tomorrow morning--no breakfast until afterwards.

You're lucky, Johnny--last week's procedure for me was at 2:15 p.m.; I had to fast all day before that.  And the previous week, when I had my blood drawn, that involved fasting, too--from the time I got up, through work, and until suppertime.

(I hope the picture they drew is pretty enough--haven't gotten that report yet.)

Carl, I really feel for anyone who has to fast up into the day. Even before I retired, I was able to schedule such an appointment in the morning, go to work, go to the doctor, and then back to work. I am aware that not everybody is able to work such a schedule. This visit is postponed from an appointment last month that had to be canceled  because of a need to go to Baton Rouge that came up Friday before my Monday appointment. Tomorrow is the first day that could be scheduled with a morning appointment.

The Baton Rouge trip was, of course, on the popular, uncivilized form of public transport. We survived.

Well, there.   Went to the train show and got home in one piece.  Spent a little money, but nothing untoward.

On the way south I drove through Lowville, NY.   Over on Railroad.net there was a fellow who posted an unidentifed aerial photo.   The writing on the back only served to confuse things, but someone eventually recognized the scene as Lowville.  So I swung by the site and took a couple of pictures for that forum.  Found a snowplow and a 44 Tonner...

Stopped in on the way back from the show and checked the site of a minor derailment.  A local shortline had a rail roll on them, putting a couple of loaded hoppers and a C425 on the ground.  Everything's still right-side-up (and back on the tracks), but the loco was still at the site of the derailment.  They'll take it home on Monday.

Temps got into the mid-20's today, with scattered snow.  Roads for the trip were OK most of the time, occasionally a little slushy.  Looks like more of the same all week.

Tomorrow we have off, so I'm enjoying a three-day weekend.   Next Friday as my flex day, so I get another three-day weekend!

Soup sounds good.
