We were at -13 when I retired last night; it's -18 now (the Bug shows that it hit -19 sometime during the night).  The car gets to spend the day in Pat's parking lot today, instead of on the hump.

Good Friday morning, everyone.  We're right at 0 F this morning.  Wind chill anywhere from -10 to -15, depending on the area you are in.  May make it up to about 17 or so degrees for a high today.

There's plenty of hot coffee, hot chocolate, hot cider and water for hot tea, to go along with bacon, sausage, eggs (however you want them this morning), fried taters, homemade buttermilk biscuits w/sausage gravy, along with bagels and bear claws.

All of you, keep as warm as you can, and take care today.  Bundle up!!

Although there's still time to do it this morning, we haven't broken the all-time record low that was set yesterday- currently officially at -27 degrees according to the PC readout.  My thermometers all read somewhere around -21 when I left the house.  A light wind out of the south gives reason for optomism.  I must be a glutten for punishment this morning- drove over to an outdoor ATM to get cash and then stopped to fill up the tank.

Had -22F at the house early this morning.  There's only a wisp of wind, so the wind chill is nil.

Still, the forecast is doom and gloom.  Continued cold, and the lake effect "machine" is supposed to crank up today and tomorrow.

As long as I can make the train show in Utica on Sunday.  It's not a big show, but it's at Utica Union Station (a gorgeous old station, nicely restored and maintained), and I know the organizer quite well (he's one of our volunteer engineers).

Time for some tea.

Good morning everyone. (Grabs big mug of hot chocolate and a bear claw)

If you see my last post, the graphic automatically references the current temperature in the Sacramento, CA area. It's a pretty cool 38 °F. outside as I type this....

We hit our low point about sunup this morning...{normal}, -10.5 and bright sunshine.  Should be on an up trend now for temp in our area.  We'll have about "0" tomorrow morning and then start the climb out of that. But today it will get about + 5  if it does what they projected yesterday.

Recoverery should continue on into next week with high's in the 20's and 30's....That will feel like a much more normal winter temp.

You know, January is half over.....a good achievement.  We'll just look forward {out there a ways yet}, towards spirng.

Good morning from Winston-Salem.

Can't say we have temps quite like you folks North and West of us, but cold just the same. Low this morning was 9 and presently 14 degrees with the high expected to be 24. The good thing is that the skies are clear with bright sunshine.

Great day to stay inside for us here.

Back to work on Tuesday, Feeling much better

PL - I'm guessing that +9 for you is probably like -20 for us, maybe even worse.

Found this as four ways to beat the winter blahs.

I am still going to hold out for my best ideas.  1.  Spend winter on a Caribbean Island, or, 2. Hibernate.

Not going to mention the about 1 inch of snow that arrived overnite and wasn't even announced!

But - did look out upstairs window this morning to see a half eaten corn cob moving slowly across the overhead lines.  Cob was about as long as its carrier.

I will let you ponder that one as I am sure the neighbors are, since we put out a cob-a-day.  And we pick up very few empty ones.

.....Those squirrels can do anything that involves movement....Saw one come down the side of a smooth wood fence head first, a short time ago and never slipped a step.  Why they risk life and limb running across a thin wire to get across the street is a mystery to me.  One movement they do that I question though, is in running across the street....They often seem to wait to the automobile gets close and then make their charge....not always successful.  Maybe that's the real reason to cross on  the thin wire.

At 12:30, our official temp at the airport is 11 degrees.  Our indoor/outdoor thermometer shows 14. something (can't remember exactly).  Sun is shining, but not providing much warmth, of course, and can't see the leaves (needles) moving on the pine tree out front.

Our Friday Fish Fry is on the warmer bar:   Fish includes cod, perch, scallops, crab cakes, rolled oysters, jumbo butterfly shrimp;

Side dishes include fries, cole slaw, hush puppies, fried mushrooms, mac & cheese, baked beans.

Desserts include:  chocolate cake, apple, cherry, peach and strawberry cobblers and chocolate and pecan pies.

Everyone have a good afternoon, keep warm and take care.

Moline airport set record for coldest EVER. Minus 29. I see it was minus 36 at Rochelle. I wonder if there were any railfans out this morning? The plane landing safely in the Hudson river made for a great news story.

CW, I was late for your lunch (I already had cold roast beef sandwiches), but I will take some for supper, if any is left over.

About noon, the temperature at the Salt Lake City Airport was in the high thirties--and the temperature in Provo, SOUTH of here, was 18. The inversion (warm air sitting on top of cold air and blocking heat from the sun) hit there first. Two days ago, we could see the Wasatch Mountains quite clearly; today, there is much haze between us. For the next week, we expect lows in the twenties and highs in the low forties. When the next storm comes in, it should clear all the gunk out.

At the moment Larry, can't seem to recall the commerical......

The one where the two squirrels run out and make a car swerve and then high 5 each other for such a good job....

We always buy two bags of peanuts when we grocery shop (which was today) and the checkers still have never figured out that along with the corn cobs and bird seed, why so many peanuts.  (unsalted, too!)  We never buy beer or spirits, so they must figure we just have shells all over the living room floor!

Driver sez we have a rabbit that eats the corn when he can get near it and always eats some of the bird seed and peanuts.  How could a rabbit eat peanuts with no way to hold them and crack them.  Maybe just eat the whole thing?  Ugh....Guess he wouldn't have to take fiber.....

Afternoon All,

It looks like the Trackside Lounge has faded into history and that was where I usually posted my shots that didn't really warrant their own threads. So, I hope you guys don't mind if I pop in here and post a picture every now and again.

For today's installment, here's a shot of Metra's Hill Yard as seen from the High Street Bridge in my hometown of Aurora, IL.

My schedule really clogged up on this trip, so I didn't get out taking pictures except for one morning -- January 3rd.

We're supposed to have a nice weekend with temps around 60ºF (sorry...if I could figure out how to share it, I'd send some back east!), so I'm hoping to get out and get some shots sometime this weekend. I have yet to shoot the Moffat Line since I've been back, so that may be where I find myself.

Hope you're all staying warm!

I don't put corn out, but do keep sunflower seeds available.  Got home from work a little early today and since it was light, scooped up some seed from the can on the back porch and headed for the feeders, accompanied by the Dal.  He got rather excited and kept looking up in the bushes.  I figured we'd surprised one of the squirrels that I see from time to time, but it wasn't. It was a cat, as high in the bushes as the branches would allow.

Filled the feeders and kept the Dal inside for a while.  Cat's gone.  Probably thought it had discovered a nice smorgasbord.  We'll see if it comes back....

Chris - We don't mind your pictures one bit.  The Lounge only got closed because the big threads slow the forums down.  You'd be a perfect candidate to launch Lounge II.

Good evening, all.  Got another round of fish, sides and desserts out on the warmer bar.  And, if none of that interests you, in the Crock Pot on the counter, you'll find sliced hot  dogs in barbecue sauce.  It's really good, too!!  The sauce is midly spicy, and is delicious.  Not too spicy hot, so it won't disagree with anyone who can't take spicy food.

Chris, you know you are always welcome to post your pictures here anytime!  And that's a very good picture you posted.  Always enjoy seeing your pictures.

I'm not sure what our current temp is:  I'm not bothering to look at the thermometer.  I'm comfortably warm, and don't want to freeze myself, by looking at the thermometer.  I'll just wait until the late news comes on!

Have a good evening, everyone, stay warm, and take care.

Oh, Chris...

I don't feel so bad now about not getting together; it sounds like your schedule was as clogged as mine.  On January 3 I was back at work.

I guess this will be the place to put the pictures, ask the questions, etc.  I suppose one overweight thread (hopefully not from all the food!) is easier to reincarnate than two or three.  However, if the Lounge is brought back, as Larry suggests, I am so there!

Question for you, Larry:  it looked like, from the map on The Weather Channel, Lake Erie is about to completely freeze over.  Being the smallest of the Great Lakes, that's not too surprising.  Would that affect your snowfall?  Or are you more under Lake Ontario's effect?

We sank back down below zero before dark tonight.  Tomorrow morning, dark and early, we expect to wake up to temperatures back above zero--and snow falling.

Chris......That's a beautuful picture....!  Jean just walked in here {to bring me a sandwich....}, and said..."That's a beautiful picture.....You should copy it on photo paper and put it on the wall in here....."  So from Muncie Chris...Approval of your shot seems to be solid.

For a change, it's cold in Carolina. An hour before sunrise, officially, it's 17 and clear, with a projected high of 38 today. I sat up with the wireless, which it turns out was a waste of time, so will hit the rack shortly. First, I will open the place.

For breakfast, you have a choice of buttermilk pancakes, blueberry waffles, sausage pig-in-a-blankets, or ham sandwiches, along with bacon, link sausage, scrambled eggs or oatmeal. Beverages include soft drinks, fruit juices, coffee or your choice of tea. Sorry for the lack of diversity

Enjoy, stay warm and safe and have a great weekend.

Good morning, everyone.  Tom, thank you so much for coming in early, and fixing breakfast and everything!  You did a great job, Tom!!Thumbs UpBow

We have 14 degrees this morning.  It's already dropped a degree or two, from when I awoke at 5:50.  By 5 p.m., we're supposed to have a temp between 37 and 39 degrees.  That will be a heat wave, won't it?

Everyone have a good day, and hopefully we'll all have sunshine, with little or no wind, to help raise the temps for all of us.
