Ah, once again you prove you're far too clever for the likes of us. We don't deserve you as a moderator.Mischief [:-,]

And since it seems anything goes in this thread, and I've been biting my tongue for months, let me blow my bilges. It's about time someone said something to you in return. I'll assume constructive criticism travels the opposite way down the pipe.

A few days ago you locked a thread with this:

Gee, fellas, you'd think that's all the forum should offer is the same three or four members taking jabs at each other over a three week period on the one or two threads that they sustain with those same jabs...and go nowhere.

There's nothing wrong with some off-topic banter now and then, and I have been quite tolerant of it.  But I am intolerant of exchanges of insults that continue on to the nth page and day with nothing gained, no enlightenment, no quarter given, and precious little courtesy.  When you are running your own fora, be sure to state in your rules that anything goes as long as no one pulls the plug on your server.  Over here, though, while we are willing to entertain a certain amount of variance and some diversion now and then, the invective and diatribes get tiresome.

As well, just because you happen to be enjoying a thread doesn't mean that the mods aren't getting complaints to do something about the spectacle that the thread has become.  In perhaps one case out of four, I will lock a thread that seems to be moribund or well into the burn of its second stage rocket.  In three quarters of all cases, I am responding to a number of complaints from viewers who feel the thread is reflecting badly on those still at it, and to those who are reading it.

The rules are quite straightforward, and we try to be indulgent when they are skirted at times.  But when enough gets to be enough, we'll act.

There are other fora where anything goes.  Feel free to find them if this place no longer meets your individual needs.

Since when does a volunteer moderator make policy for Kalmbach's forums? I'd like to hear the above from Bergie, if that is the policy.

If I worked for Kalmbach, any volunteer moderator that was telling my customers to take a hike if they don't like what one individual -- not an employee -- has decided would be the standards, he'd be the one taking the hike. And while I may be a jerk, I still don't like your oft-condescending attitude to members, either.

If you're so attuned to resolving complaints by members about posts, what about complaints about moderators? Who handles those?

Now I'll see how long this lasts before the warden takes it down.

That's OK I saw the thread title and thought I was going to see a new YOU TUBE video clip with Thomas and Godzilla.   I have tried to read some of the comments and I still don't know what's going on...Sigh [sigh]

I called my Congressman (whom is on my speed dial) and left a message to see if this thread is OK to continue. I've called him in the past about TV shows that are iffy to watch. Old movies that aren't PC. Talk shows that contain violence. Cable movies that show adult situations. Each time he has told me to "turn the station" but I would come back and tell him "it's my right to watch these and complain"

I just hope this isn't one of their "2 day work week"

This thread has served its purpose and should end right now!

What do you think?  Next!

"By many measures, the U.S. freight rail system is the safest, most efficient and cost effective in the world." - Federal Railroad Administration, October, 2009. I'm just your average, everyday, uncivilized howling "anti-government" critic of mass government expenditures for "High Speed Rail" in the US. And I'm gosh darn proud of that.

I'm with Solz.... I saw the thread title, and the fact that it's pinned, and thought: "How in the he.. did that happen?"

Laugh [(-D]   I'm beginning to think that this thread still exists just to spite me... Just kidding. One thing's for certain, either the moderators are trying to make some kind of point or they've just given up trying.

I think there is a general feeling that this thread is proving a point, but I doubt that the point it is proving to the moderators is the same point it is proving to the ones making the fun-loving posts.  Neither point is the one I was making when in the past I objected to locking threads.  Others who made similar objections might feel the same way.

I resemble that comment.

If You don't like it, don't open it. both of your comments have done nothing but keep it alive, and bump it to the top of the page twice, and now a third time. I for one am a bit surprised it hasn't been locked yet, but it hasn't gotten mean, and I do find it rather entertaining, Especially those who get worked up thinking that it should get locked. No Harm, No Foul.

It'd be nice to get back to that.

Good golly, Dan, one thread out of 1,000 and you're letting it get under your skin? I just checked for ya and there are still plenty of other threads about railroading going on right now on the forum -- just what you're looking for. You make it sound like they've all disappeared or something. Any special reason you're fixating on this one goofy thread?

An example: some of us don't really care for the "diner" threads. You go there a lot, but they don't meet your stated standards for "learning from and listening to more experienced fans and rails talk about the industry, its history, and future directions". That's fine. People go there to chit-chat and have fun. But just because it's not our cup of tea we don't go there and tell people how we think it should be.

These forums are something different for each individual, and everyone should respect that diversity. It's what makes the pot boil.

there is more to life then just trains!!!!!!!...

its nice to cut loss and have alittle bit of fun and be silly at times.. no hummer will make you bitter and well..just an unpleasent person to be around in general...yes i know this is a train forum.. been hearing that from people for years and i cant even count how many times it has been said in this thead alone..but geeze..its only a message bored.. in MY oppion it shows that we are human and like to have fun too... if it was all just shop talk ALL the time..this place would become dry and be like reading a text book with no pics on how to turn sand into silicon micro chips for the RFID tags they put in dogs from the pound.. granted some people might find that good reading..but i dont.. i like to have some fun from time to time and at work..im all about trying to make the job as fun as i can in order to keep my sanity..(what little of it is still have that is)..... the same goes with any messagebords i post on...

Dan, everything that I have seen posted on this thread has been in tasteful (albeit silly) good humor..nothing in here that I can see as being profane or unacceptable in a public forum.
