Morning everybody. CW, I emailed Ray yesterday, but no answer. Did you have any luck? Currently 38 degrees and clear in Carolina with highs in the upper 50s expected. Take care

Good Tuesday morning, everyone.  Very chilly here, with a temp of 37.  But, with the breeze blowing, it feels much colder than that.  Supposed to get up to the mid 40s today.

Going to need to drag out the thermals this morning, when I go to get ready for Tuesday Produce.

Coffee, juices, hot chocolate and other hot beverages are ready.

On the breakfast/warmer bar:  hot turkey bacon, sausage, biscuits & gravy, scrambled eggs, hash browns, oatmeal, grits, toast, whatever hot cereal you might want.

You all enjoy your breakfast, and have a very good morning.

Nice shots Chris.

We've got flurries today!  WOO HOO!  Now if it'd just stick and accumulate to about 10-14"...I'd be grinnin' something fierce.

Mookie

Sigh  Haven't been in the mountains for some time, Chris.  All these pictures bring back some fond memories of spending time in Colorado.  Do you climb alone?  (I would hope not!)

Actually, on this occasion, I was alone. When I climb alone, I always let someone know where I'm going, what route I'm taking and what time I plan to be back. If any of those details change, I'm sure I let that contact know about the changes via telephone (cell coverage is actually pretty decent up there).

Your pictures are always enjoyed, so keep posting when you can.

Mookie

Thanks, Mook! I always love posting them here. My adventures are a lot of fun, and it adds to the experience to be able to share them with you all!

Nice stuff there, Chris.

The only mountain climbing I've done (on foot) was a trip up the "Peaks of Otter" near Lynchburg, VA.  The vertical climb was all of 1500', but I wasn't as young then as I had been (and I'm older now), and it was an effort.  Two teens didn't have a problem, though.  The trip down (minus a glacier) is really tougher - making sure you have good footing for each and every step so you don't make the trip faster than planned.

Thanks, Larry. I agree with you about going down, too. On the way up a mountain, forward momentum and gravity kind of cancel each other out. On the way down, they're working together and the only thing keeping them in check is muscle strength. Of course, this is after climbing up the mountain, so sometimes those muscles can be a bit tired!

Still, it's a hobby that I really love. There's nothing like getting above timberline and watching the world open up! It's a lot of fun!

Hi All,

Haven't been in the forum in awhile, so I thought I'd stop by and say "Hi" to the diner crowd. I've got some new 'kinda' railroady shots up in the Trackside Lounge, but I thought I'd share a couple non-railroad related shots in here. These are all from my climb up Taylor Peak in Rocky Mountain National Park last weekend:

Alpenglow on the Mummy Range

The rising sun splits the Twin Sisters and starts lighting Long's Peak

Hallett's Peak and Flattop Mountain

The Requisite Tacky Summit Shot

There are more shots from the outing here if you're interested.

This was a big climb for me. I've been turned around twice on Taylor. The first time I climbed a false summit of Taylor, and hypoxia was starting to kick in. Altitude sickness isn't fun, so I headed down the mountain instead of pushing myself to the real summit.

The second time, I was doing my best to do a lightning rod impression (which is even less fun than altitude sickness), so again I made a hasty retreat down the mountain -- that time to get back below timberline.

Finally, I was able to make the summit safely this time, so I made it to the top. All told, I think I did around 16 miles or so with 4200'+ of elevation gain. The only downside to the outing was the trip down Andrew's Glacier. I've gone down Andrew's several times, and it's a lot of fun usually. This particular outing was different, though. Usually theres a layer a fresh and/or melted snow on top of the glacier that makes it easy to traverse. On this outing, the glacier was a solid sheet of ice with all kinds of bumps and such on it. I didn't have any cramp-ons with me, so there was no way to keep traction on the ice. Because of that, I had to go down on my bum.

Going over all the little bumps gave my poor behind quite a beating. Additionally, at one point, I got going a little faster than I would have liked. In an effort to slow myself down, I managed to jam my left leg pretty well. Thankfully, there were no breaks/sprains. Still, the last 6.5 to 7 miles back to the car on a bummed up leg seemed VERY long.

Still, the sense of accomplishment really helped the healing process, and I was out jogging by the end of the next day. A fairly amazing creation, the human body!

Anyways, good to see you all. I hope you are all well!

Tom, haven't  heard from him.  Think I'll email and check on him. I notice he hasn't been around since before the forum change.

Since it's so chilly today, I've made three batches of chili for lunch and supper:

1.  mild

2.  medium

3.  semi-hot (didn't make it too spicy hot, that's why it's labeled "semi-hot")

Getting ready to head to the library.  Return some books, and look for some new ones, along with picking up one or two that we had reserved.    You all have a great afternoon, stay as warm as possible, and keep yourselves safe & sound!  (And we'll do the same around here.)

.....42.6 degrees here right now.  Really doesn't feel that bad out now...Just a typical Fall day with overcast but bright skies.  Wind isn't too bad....nothing like yesterday which was really gusty.

So you folks out on the plains and beyond.....shoo that ugly stuff to the north, northwest....We really aren't ready for the white stuff yet.

Brian, glad to see you came by last night!  How are you and Joanie?  (Btw, you can keep that white stuff, you saw on your deck and table top.)  We don't need that around here, just yet.  Although about 42  years ago, we had a snow storm hit right on Halloween.  Family went to the hospital to see first grandson/nephew, after he'd been born that afternoon.  Never will forget trying to get to the hospital, in all that snow.  No one went Trick or Treating that year!  Now, this nephew works for NASA in Cleveland.

We're doing fine here, CW- busy as always.  Joanie's bionic knees are great, but now the Sciatic nerve in one of her hips is giving her fits- probably the result of walking funny for all those years.

We made another run down to Iowa City yesterday to deliver something to my son and enjoy lunch with him and his wife- needless to say the trip was a "breeze".WhistlingLaugh

What little snow we got last night is long gone this morning.  All of the outdoor surfaces are still too warm to allow snow to stick around.

Thanks alot, Mook.  Just what we need here.  One of our landscape lights lost its cover, and I can't find it- normally they stay real close to the light, but this one just disappeared.  Took a look out on the back patio a bit ago, and was surprised to see the wooden deck and picnic table top turning white.  Look out, Quentin, it's blowing your way...

Sent rain east, now will send wind and then freezing temps too!  Ah, love the power!

Not too much of that nasty stuff.....But you must have sent it first class as we've already had some intermittant rain this evening and the forecast for today was wind gusts up to 40 mph.....Felt like it was at least that much.  Rocking the truck, etc....

The snow you can send on north east.....way north.....None needed here....Have mowing to do yet.

Freezing temps we're used to.  You can keep the wind.

Trackside on the plains:  sunny, bright, beautiful.  Winds gusting to 59 mph.  All the tumbleweeds in the area were beating poor Millie to death along with the wind rocking her.  Good thing she is low profile!

Wind broke one of the gates on the crossing at watch site.  Looked like a bad break at the elbow? Smile

To go along with today's barbeque country backbone ribs (all meat, no bones) and the roast, taters and carrots, we have:  your choice of:

1.  Broccoli; 2.  creamed style corn; 3.  peas; 4.  cauliflower; 5.  cole slaw; 6.  garden salad; 7.  the last of the tomatoes, fresh off the vine; 8.  fresh from the oven cornbread

Desserts:

1.  yellow cake w/chocolate icing; 2.  peach cobbler; 3.  apple cobbler; 4.  white cake w/coconut icing

There's plenty of coffee, apple cider, iced tea (sweet & unsweetened), milk, buttermilk, chocolate milk and strawberry milk

Quentin - They were taken with my Digital Rebel, freehand, and in the dark.  Shutter speeds were a bit long for shooting freehand.  Didn't really have time to work with a tripod.  On the scene the light was pretty good.  The long shot was just that.

I get pictures off my cellphone by emailing them to myself.  Just put in an email address instead of a phone number when you "send" them.  It does rack up some air time, but my current plan makes that mostly a non-issue.

......Today we'll have clear skies and bright sunshine.  Temp right now 46.  Wind will be present too with some gusts as high as in the 40 zone, as per weather people.

But tomorrow and Tues. to be cooler and who knows { a snow flake or two}.....It's difficult to tell the way the forecasters talk about such stuff.....Then it's to get warmer again the rest of the week.

{And I'm still in the yard mowing mode......}....?

Tree....Sure were some different photos...Looks like quick hand held and by chance was it with your cell phone.  Just yesterday I was taking some photos of our small family in a nearby restaurant with our {newest}, cell phone and had not used that feature before.  Now, have to figure out how to get them on here.  Looks like I need an adaptor to connect with a USB line.....

Good Sunday morning to you all.  Very pleasant temps this morning, even at 48 degrees at 7:07 a.m.  Doesn't feel too bad out, even though I was only outside for about a minute, to get the paper.   Larry, looks like you had a very eventful time getting home.  Very glad to hear that everyone in the home got out safely, and you all got all the hotspots taken care of.

Coffee, juices, hot chocolate, hot cider and hot water for tea are all ready.

On the warmer bar this morning:  turkey bacon, pancakes, waffles, sausage (choice of links or patties), tater tots, scrambled eggs.  For you pancakes and waffles, you have the following syrup choices:  maple syrup, Mrs. Butterworth's Original, blueberry and strawberry flavors.

For Sunday Dinner later, I'm going to be putting some barbeque country backbone ribs in the oven, and we'll also have nice beef sirloin roast w/roasted potatoes & carrots.  Now, you all tell me what other vegetables you would like to have with the ribs and roast.

Tree:  When is your last day to run?

My last regular season runs were today.  Tomorrow is the end of the regular season.

Still to go are some special trains (including some murder mystery/dinner trains) and Polar Express (now largely sold out).

It did rain.  Boy, did it rain.  An inch and three quarters here at the house.  I think I soaked up almost that much working at the railroad.  There are some things you just have to do outside.

And to top it off, I was about a half hour from home when my fire department was dispatched for a fire in an attached garage.  It got into the house, as well.

The view from the road in front of my driveway (which was blocked by a fire hose, so I couldn't even get "home").

The fire started in the garage at the back of the house:

Everyone got out OK, and they didn't lose too many of their belongings (although they got wet and probably smell like smoke).  It was a very old house and had plenty of little spots the fire could hide.  We got them all, though.

Quentin, this weekends contest is worldwide. The object is to contact as many people in as many countries in as many of the 40 zones as possible. I mostly just mess around with the contest and don't really make an entry and try to have an enjoyable time. I would assume that the contest your locals participate in was field day, which is mainly a communal effort in June. I have not participated in FD activity in over 40 years, but mess around in other tests from time to time.

CW, I am serious about wanting chitlins, but was of course facetious about the request. There is a town in SC called Sallie, where they have an annual "chitlin strut" festival. I have always wanted to go there and sample their stuff, but I imagine that the area is highly aromatic while they are cooking. Anyway, thanks for the ribs.

Yall have a great weekend.

Tom

Boy.....just found the diner thread on the 2nd page.....Where are all the customers....or is it a fact the whole forum is down on writers and  readers.

Could be they were at work (like yours truly) or watching Georgia teach LSU its manners or perhaps missing dinner to see what Ohio State and Penn State will do to each other.

Just a guess of course,
