Quentin -

Congratulations on the anniversary!

As Mookie said, I've been accepted to four universities. I'll be going to the one closest to home, which is Creighton University right in Omaha. The scholarship is for $14,000, renewable for four years. I also plan on living at home, which will cut several thousand more dollars off the pricetag. Of course, I could always choose to not go to college and just work at Arby's for the rest of my life... Big Smile

Mookie
We are going to brave the cold and go look at some trains.  Hopefully they will warm the air as they go by?  At least they will stop the wind for a few minutes, since we will be on the south side of them.

Having stood on the platform over the past couple of days as CSX intermodals passed a few feet away at 60 per, I can tell you conclusively that passing trains do not warm the air as they go by.

1400 more happy patrons of the Polar Express while I was working this weekend.

A few dozen customers decided to dine with us for breakfast this AM at the fire department.  The jolly old elf himself paid a visit to the kids in attendance, then set off around the neighborhood delivering some smiles, candy canes, oranges, and apples to area senior citizens.

Photogs from two local papers rode the trains this past weekend.  Will share links when they post them.

Afternoon everyone.....

Belated thanks for the birthday wishes, spent my birthday backed into the loading dock of NewPage Paper in Whiting, WI, took them five hours to load 23 rolls of paper, they had computer problemsBanged HeadBanged Head.  Am now 29 years old (really!)

I've been fortunate this week, only times I hit snow was last Sunday around Syracuse, and a touch of freezing rain on Wednesday night in western PA.

Joe:  what do you warehouse, I dont think we have anything going on up that way.  US127 is sometime referred to as Millis highway between Eaton and Hamilton, we run that road a LOT!!

See everyone for dinner.....

Jay - 60 yesterday and 11 today.  But all of you northerners have the snow to contend with.  We don't and probably won't - or maybe a little only.

CW - I want to go to Houston where my weather indicator sez 68!  You are getting what we had yesterday.  Very windy, but very nice.  Keep your mittens close by.

We are going to brave the cold and go look at some trains.  Hopefully they will warm the air as they go by?  At least they will stop the wind for a few minutes, since we will be on the south side of them.

40 degrees and the ice on the driveway is trying to melt.  Got to get salt down to finish the job today, because the thermometers are packed up and ready to head south.  (High of 14 tomorrow.)

Good morning everyone (grabs big mug of coffee and a cinnamon roll).

It's supposed to rain today, but right now looking at the Doppler radar map from Weather Underground's web page and I don't see a darn thing! Maybe the rain will arrive later today?

(By the way, we should make a big pot of vegetable beef barley soup today. Dinner )

.....Our weather is very much projected to be similar to what Paula just described for Louisville, just a few degrees cooler.  38 here now and very gusty wind.  Streets are wet and it must have rained a bit during the night.

Wet roads....some wind, we can handle that.  I see all that nasty stuff heading up across the country north of us.  Sounds like real winter.  Wind and snow and cold are a nasty combination to deal with.  Thankfully, it looks like we'll not have to contend with that one.

Jen, I too found the front door on here barred last evening.....I was beginning to wonder....but later it did clear up and the "door" seems to work smooth and easy this morning.

So we can enjoy the "non winter" day it seems to be providing for us.  If we don't get blown off the street and highway leading into town for church.

Good Sunday morning.  Joe, thank you for fixing breakfast this morning!!  I really do appreciate all the help you guys give me in here.

Joe and Mookie, we've got winds out of the south and west.  They (the winds) are supposed to 10 to 20 mph, and gusting in the 40 mph category.  But, we're 'supposed' to be 'warm' today with temps in the mid to upper 50s.   Only to have sprinkles today.   And for most of next week, rain predicted for everyday, possibly some nasty wintry mix. But for now, temp is 44 degrees outside.  Mookie, want to come to Louisville to warm up?

Must have been an accident in the diner - said Server was down.  Couldn't get in front door for awhile.  Anyone hurt?

Anyway - Happy Golden Anniversary to Quentin and Jean.  And many more happy and prosperous ones.  Will give Dan and Misty something to work toward.

60 degrees here today - and after a low overnite of 45, will drop like a rock to teens for tomorrow afternoon.  Oh joy and rapture.  I am so thrilled!  Blindfold  But no snow - that is staying up north.

Joe - sent a greenie with an ugly - on the Detroit Edison coal train to you this afternoon.  Also saw the gaudy KCS motors with freight headed to KC.  Mostly coal moving back and forth, tho.  Will try to check again tomorrow - but will keep the heater on and the windows up tight for the viewing!

Heard from Willy - he has been accepted at 4 universities and was awarded a Regents Scholarship.  I am so proud and not even a relative!  He will stay in his home town and attend one closest to home.  Maybe he will pop in over Xmas and give us his plans.  I figure in a few years we will have Willy2 PH.D

I know Tree is busy, but worried about him so close to the ice storm.  Hope he checks in very soon.  He is probably a blue spruce by now.

Quentin, let me jump in here with my heartfelt congratulations. Like someone said earlier, this isn't news you hear much of nowadays and is always good to hear. Please pass my good wishes on to your missus. Your supper here tonight is on me and my bride of 38 years.

A very blessed and HAPPY ANNIVERSARY to the MONGS!!!!  And I, too, wish you both have many happy years ahead of you.  Quentin, I always love to read your posts, not only here in the Flat Wheel Cafe, but on the other threads as well.  Believe I have learned one or two things from your sage advice and wisdom.

Wow, Roy.....Thoughts well said....Thank you.  Warm weather is really nice this time of year.  We did spend 8 winters in Florida some years ago and enjoyed it very much.  The back and forth got to be a little much and we ceased that activity back in 2001, I believe it was.

And Joe, thank you for your thoughts too.

Congratulations Mr. Quinton

I believe this is the correct thing to say on such an achievement. They should always be celebrated with those far and wide. The amazing thing is about such celebrations is how most everyone stops and will truthfully say best wishes and hope for many more. I do hope that you and you better half, best friend and confidant will have many more such milestones in the future.

Perhaps a trip to warmer climes for a spot of time would be in order for the two of you.

In reading your posts over the past few years and today you have proven what I think that Robert Browning said best many years ago to his beloved Elizabeth Barrett (Browning)  "Come grow old with me, the best is yet to be."

Warmest best wishes,

PL

..........Can't really greet all with a "good morning", as it just passed the noon mark....{here}....Our day is not one to complain about for this time of the year.  29 now and sky is bright and no snow.

We hope the best for all the folks in New York, New England, etc....area.  Our hope is for them to get their power back as soon as possible.  It really looks like serious damage to the power grid.  We experienced that recently {2005}, so memory is fresh how that effects {everything}....Not a good situation.  I remember during our last ordeal, after hundreds of linemen from all over the eastern area were here in Muncie....and one day, a restaurant that did get power back, a group of linemen came in from their rugged work schedule....to get some food and everyone in the restaurant stood up and applauded them and moved them beyond the waiting line.  A really touching moment...!  They were from 9 or 10 states helping assemble our power grid back to working order.

Enjoying a quiet weekend....Processing the thoughts this is our 50th Anniversary weekend.  Feel very blessed.

Greetings to all as the holiday is sneeking up on us....

Good Saturday morning.  Tom, thank you so much for getting everything together, and fixing breakfast!  (Maybe I ought to sleep in a little bit more often.)  Smile

Joe, you all be careful on your trip to Ft. Wayne.  Hopefully, the traffic won't be too bad for you, and the roads will be at least semi-clear of snow/slush.

You all have a good morning, and and take care going out in the cold.

There is more fish, fries, etc. on the warmer bar for supper; along with something special for someone whose birthday I almost forgot:  HAPPY BIRTHDAY, RANDY VOSS!!  Happy B-Day Happy B-Day Happy B-Day Happy B-Day Happy B-Day Happy B-Day

Just in case Randy gets to stop by, I've made peppersteak over rice (I do know that that is one of his favorites).  I'm glad I thought earlier about putting cherry pie on the menu today, as that's one of his favorites!  Once again,

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, RANDY!!  Hope it's been a very good one, so far today.

I'll have to pass on the desserts tonight. Barbara & I drove down to Memphis last weekend for some BBQ pig outs. Corky's & both Neely's. I saw a CN train on the IC bridge on Monday. FIrst time for that. We had thought about driving on down to New Awlins.
Got back home Thursday. Not much snow here in Aledo. Some corn still remains to be picked.
