Keep guessing both of you are wrong on the NP train the Yellowstone did not operate through to the West Coast only Chicago to Yellowstone the same with the Comet.

In the 1950's the GN operated a third transcontinental train what was the name of this train and how about the name of the predecessor to the NP Mainstreeter?

The IC's second streamliner was indeed the City of Miami which went into service in 1940. The Green Diamond made its debut in 1936.

The CM ran on the IC's Chicago-New Orleans main as far south as Fulton, KY then headed southeast on the IC's line thru Jackson, TN to Birmingham. It then ran over the Central of Georgia to Albany, GA, the ACL to Jacksonville and finally the FEC to Miami. It ran every third day in conjunction with the other two Chicago - Miami streamliners, the Dixie Flagler and the South Wind. I remember standing trackside to see the CM resplendent in its orange paint with green trim on the morning of its maiden trip south from Chicago. As a boy of 8 I was thrilled to receive two short horn blasts from the engineer in response to my waving as the train sped by.

Since the City of Miami was the more difficult part of my original question I think Passengerfan should be declared our winner so lets have the next question please.

The CITY OF MIAMI actually operated over its own IC rails between Chicago and Birmingham.

Was there a City of Miami Ltd., sometimein the late 30's/early 40's?  if so, it had to be inconjunction with some other railroads that actually went to Miami.  My guess is it went south as far as maybe Memphis on IC tracks?

Not 1935 but you're close.

You may be thinking of the Panama Limited which was the IC's all Pullman premier train running between Chicago and New Orleans. But the second IC streamliner was put in service before the Panama received streamlined equipment. The Pan American was the L&N's hotshot overnight train between Louisville and New Orleans.

Sorry Al not the City of NO. The second of the IC streamliners was a pre-WW2 train.

A hint as to the year the Green Diamond went into service running between Chicago and St. Louis. The GD followed closely on the heels of its other articulated predecessors; the Burlington Pioneer Zephyr, the UP M-10000, the B&M Flying Yankee and the GM&N Rebel.

You're right with the Green Diamond. It was the first IC streamliner. Now how about the year it went into service?

If I recall correctly the Land o' Corn did run for a while as a Brill liner which I suppose could be considered a streamliner, however it is not the second train that I had in mind. Guess again.

Mark

City of New Orleans, when it was the day train?  About 1948?

Here's an easy question. What were the first two streamlined passenger trains on the Illinois Central and the dates each went into service?

New Albany & Salem which became the Chicago, Indianapolis & Louisville - the Monon. The road was acquired by the L&N and today is a part of the CSX.
