-Don (Random stuff, mostly about trains - what else? http://blerfblog.blogspot.com/)
Oltmann You have guessed the two Canadian Provinces Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland. Your turn for question?
In the 1950s and 1960s, the Long Island Railroad had nary an EMD.
There were 5 first generation and one second generation model purchased new for passenger service during that period. Among the first generation passenger power, there were 6, 8, 10 and 12 cylinder diesel engined models. Name the builder's model designation (e.g. EMD SD40-2) at least one of each. Also, name the 2nd gen model.
Alcos and FM, including C-Liners - yup. PAs - nope.
Gotta give me model designation. Hint a 1600 HP frt Cliner A unit is a CFA-16-4.

i think the (5) is number of axles....just throwing that out there
That's one. An FM CPA-20-5 C-Liner, 2000 HP 8 cylinder, B-A1A wheel arrangement (5 axles)
Two first gen FMs and two first gen Alcos to go. Get any three.
Another hint. The two 1st gen Alcos and the second gen Alco all had different engine models. The one 1st gen Alco was a very big seller.
The remaining two FM - one was a hood and one was a cab unit.
I seem to recall that the Long Island had Alco RS-2 and RS-3 and I believe they also had the Alco C-420. Was the missing FM the CPA 16-4.

C420 was the 2nd gen Alco.
The RS3s were new - the RS2s were aquired used.
The other FM cab unit was a C-Liner, but you went the wrong direction...
To recap:
1st gen: (need 2 more)
6 cyl ???
8 cyl ???
10 cylinder - FM CPA-20-5
12 cylinder - Alco RS3
other FM C-Liner ???
2nd gen:
Alco C420
Some more hints:
The 6 cyl is an Alco.
What was the highest horsepower FM you could get?
How about the FM CPA 24 - 5 and was the Alco a FA2.
oltmannd wrote: What was the highest horsepower FM you could get?
Give us another hint? Pleeeeze?
passengerfan wrote: How about the FM CPA 24 - 5 and was the Alco a FA2.Al - in - Stockton
That's the second C-Liner. The LIRR had 4 of them.
The LIRR purchase some second-hand FAs for use as HEP cab cars, but none new, and they had 12-244 engines in them.
The 6 cylinder Alco was a kissin' cousin to a model produced en-masse for the US military.
Murphy Siding wrote: oltmannd wrote: What was the highest horsepower FM you could get? A trainmaster? HH6-2400??
HH was an Alco designation for early switchers i.e. pre S1.
FM used an H designation for their hood units. A trainmaster would be an H-24-66 The LIRR had FM hood units that were the functional equivelant to an Alco RS3.

One last guess on the six cylinder Alco was it the RSC 1 or RS 1 those are the two I can think of with a military connection.

We have a winner!
RS1 is correct. The FM was an H-16-44.
Here's the summary:
First gen:
RS1 - Alco 6 cyl 539 engine
RS3 - Alco 12 cyl 244 engine
H-16-44 - FM 8 cyl
CPA-20-5 - FM 10 cyl (LIRR owned the only 8 produced)
CPA-24-5 - FM 12 cyl (LIRR owned 4 of 22 produced. NYC and NH had the rest)
C420 - Alco 12 cyl 251 engine
The C420s chased all the FMs away. Later, EMD GP38-2s and MP15ACs chased the all the Alcos away and the only non-EMDs left were the 2nd hand FA HEP/cab cars.
Name the streamlined passenger train that operated for the shortest period as All Pullman before coaches were added?
