Thanks for the praise, but it was actually NSLover 92 (Michael Link) who started this thread. I did get in on it early, though, and enjoy it still - a.s.

Bristol VA to Birmingham was discontinued in 1970 or so.
I'm going to award you the win. I know that I rode the train from Glade Spring, VA to Marion, VA the weekend before May 1st hit. The train was swarmed by little kids at Marion, probably so they could have the experience of riding a train. On further reflection, though, that might have been The Pelican. But the Bristol, VA route (right on TN border) up to Wash-U Station was the remaining stub.
It seems to me I took the northbound Glade Spring - Marion trip in the morning but it could have been The Pelican if I did it later that afternoon. Memory fades!
But no varnish at all effective May 1, 1971 and to this day. Not even when the "Harley Staggers Special" was running. - a. s.

Come on it's an easy question?
I will make it easy it was the day trains.
The only way I could figure out the answer is to consult an old Off. Guide to the Rwys., and maybe not even then. - a.s.
Name the predecessor passenger trains to the Internationals on the Seattle - Vancouver BC route operated by the GN?

There is another interesting trivia question to which I don't know the answer. Other than this unit what was the last unit that carried the NP canoe paint scheme?
I give credit to answering this one to passengerfan because he answered the hardest part of the question. Passengerfan - your turn.
passengerfan wrote:Sometimes it pays to sleep on something. As I recall the unit was actually an ex SP&S Alco that was painted into old NP colors for a lawsuit. The NP had already scrapped the actual unit that was involved in the incident and the BN merger had since taken place. The unit was repainted into the NP colors and after the court case was sent to scrap wearing the new paint. Am I close.

It was an NP unit that was painted back to NP colors for a lawsuit brought against the RR. Can't remember the model or roadnumber.
wyomingrailfan wrote:So the unit was from the SLSF, right?

I was painted into this scheme from the new merged colors. My locomotive class was the last to carry the original home road colors of one of the other parent companies involved in the merger.
