a lot of trains, and engines, and boxcars and such. [;)] [:D]

But when I see them I am too busy to write down all the engine numbers. [:(]

Oh well, life is good. [^]

WHEN: Tuesday, July 19, 2005, about 12:45 PM
WHERE: Grade crossing, where Mt. Prospect Road crosses the former C&NW Northwest Line, which parallels Northwest Highway.
WHAT: A self-propelled Burro crane pushing a MoW flat car in front, and pulling another flat car and a dump car behind, moving very slowly. Another, single Burro crane was following at a short distance. And then an inbound Metra commuter train rolled by on an adjacent track. The MoW cars were gray annd still lettered for C&NW.

Not bad for a weekday afternoon.

I also recently saw a work train, including what appeared to be a transfer caboose painted in Milwaukee Road colors on a spur off the former C&NW New Line, near the grade crossing on Higgins Road/Touhy Avenue.

(This is near the site of the crash of American Flight 191.)

Or rather, heard, CSX GP38-2 2709. While I'll often make an effort to catch an engine when it's working here where I work, today I heard the horn and just wanted to hear it again - it was plain melodious and a pleasure to listen to. The engine itself was another well-worn example of a workhorse.

On Wednesday, I got the chance to go mini-golfing with my cousins in Wisconsin Dells. I'm not very good at Mini golfing, but I jumped at the chance, as the CP railroad Bridge over the Wisconsin River is right next to the golf course. I ended up seeing three trains, the first a CP led by two AC4400's, the second a CSX run through(I'm assumming) with a CSX SD60M(I think) followed by an AC4400(Again, I think) and the third train was a another CP train, With a CP unit on the point, and a lease unit behind that, but I couldn't identify these two.

I don't go main line railfanning much, so I may not have properly identified most of these units. I'm used to the GP38's, SD20's, and SD40-2's of the Wisconsin & Southern

BNSF 7751 in the new swoosh scheme. Unfortunately, it was 6:00 AM, and I didn't realize what I was looking at until it was right next too me - headlights were too bright to see the nose. It was leading another BNSF loco in HII paint, followed by blue/white unit that looked like an ex-GE demonstrator. Was heading south through Norman, OK leading a mixed freight.

409 indirectly as in auto. I added the 409 because it is one of my favorite Beach Boy songs, and I wanted a number that wasn't my birthdate, since so many people use that. Whenever I use a number, it has some signifigance to something I like.

A UP train! (They tend to be sorta rare in Wisconsin)
www.fuzzyworld3.com/rr05.html#uprail
I saw it on the passing siding by the Milwaukee airport, I would guess it was there while the Z-EMCH went by?

Also, some unusual CP visitors to Milwaukee last week:

During a weekend stay in Hancock, NY (on the old Erie main - Port Jervis to Binghampton):

Westbound a manifest lead by 4 CSX engines.

Eastbound a BNSF norange, BN Green, and two Suzie-Qs leading a manifest.

Both were early morning (after dawn), and I was too far away (literally on a mountaintop) to get any more details. There are about 6 crossings in Hancock, and very close together, so one hears plenty of music. It's interesting that from the mountaintop you can hear the trains coming from a good distance in both directions, while down in the village your first indication is often the first crossing gates. The old double track truss bridge across the Delaware River also provides a distinct sounding board - you can definitely tell when they reach it and when the last car clears. The screeches and pings of the very tight curve don't carry well to the mountaintop, though.

Another train came through about 2:30 one morning. The engineer was very respectful of the community (which was mostly asleep at that hour), keeping the use of the horn to an absolute minumum. During daylight they just let it rip.

Yesterday I got the chance to go do a little railfanning over in Wisconsin Dells at Boman Road of the CP line through there. Here's what I saw:

3:15 4431 in SOO red/white and 4426, in the CP golden Beaver scheme led a short manifest train. This was just as we were getting there, so no photo of this one.

3:45 A full SOO consist, 4443 and 4442, led a small unit hopper train though the Dells. Here's a photo for those of you that requested one:
http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=114300

3:57 Another CP freight came through right on the heels of the last train, led by four units, 9622, 5913, CEFX 2801, & CEFX 2805, an AC4400CW and three SD40-2's respectfully. This was another Mixed Freight train:
http://www.railimages.com/albums/noahhofrichter/acv.jpg

These last two photos aren't as good, as the shadows moved onto the track, but I still wanted a sunny shot, so I had to zoom in a little.

5:53 There was a long, long break in traffic, but then all of a sudden a Mixed frieght, filled with Auto Frames and 60' hi-cube boxcars came around the far curve. The lone GE unit, 8532, was working hard and could be heard for a good minute before it came around the curve:
http://www.railimages.com/albums/noahhofrichter/acw.jpg

6:02 The last Freight was just barely ahead of #7, the Empire Builder, running about ten minutes late, led by 198 and 200:
http://www.railimages.com/albums/noahhofrichter/acx.jpg

With that the shadows moved farther onto the track, and so I headed home.

I got a chance to chase the MALPM yesterday, the WSOR train that runs up to my town. Here are some photos from the trip:

I started at Merrimac, The train was right on time. It was a total suprise to see the SD40-2's on the point! The WSOR has never that I know of run a Ballast train and the MALPM at the same time! I was sad at first, but quickly got over that when I realized that the unit on the point was a Patched CNW unit!!!!!! Here's a photo from the bridge: http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=114757 The units were 2990, 2961, and the WSOR's own 2054. The Ballast cars filled up the bridge from end to end!

Next I went to the Highway 136 crossing for a nice curve shot: http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=114764

After that it was on to Baraboo. He had a drop off of a centerbeam at Singer Lumber, and a Flambeau car to put on the team track. That made for a lot of passing by the depot, and myself and three other railfans made good use of the time. Here's my best shot: http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=114759 I like this one because of the coincidence that the CNW unit is patched, and the Windows on the Old CNW depot are patched(or closed if you like) up.

They skiped doing the work they had in Baraboo until the trip back, so with that it was off to Rock Springs to Dump off the Two SD40-2's and the ballast cars. Here's a shot from the Highway 12 Bridge in Baraboo: http://www.railimages.com/albums/noahhofrichter/acz.jpg

The arrived at Rock Springs a little later, and I got a shot passing by the Co-op in town: http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=114765

And the last shot of the day came as they left Rock Springs, now with only one engine and three cars: http://www.railimages.com/albums/noahhofrichter/ada.jpg They went from there to Reedsburg Were they switched Pace Plastics.

So that's my report from the day. Had I known that the UP units were leading I might not have even gone, but now I'm glad I did. It was a good day all around.
