A half dozen CP Rail grain hoppers in Sioux Falls, S.D. We rarely see anything from CP. These were the "fat" ones, shaped like a beer can.

A long DOD train passing by going WB @ Daggett & me wondering how much of my tax dollars was represented in all the equipment I saw on that train. From Bradleys to APC to Trucks to Hummers. I would say by the way the equipment was painted the equipment was destined for the desert somewhere.

Well, they never had any '50s, so that leaves... What paint scheme was it in, BTW?

Yesterday I spotted CP 4524 hiding by the Muskego Yard office in Milwaukee, my second sighting of a "flare 38-2" since they were delivered to the CP! My picture of CP 4523

CSX getting ready this morning for some big time MOW work north of DC near College Park, MD.
They have 4 high side gons full of ties, a Loram ballast cleaning set up, and were bringing in other MOW pieces by flatbed truck this morning to unload near the tracks. They have been doing a lot of work to the line out of Anacostia, driving piles, grading, moved at least one set of crossing gates, replaced a few others, etc. This was the first time I saw all the stuff in one place though.

On Saturday, October 8th, I finally got a chance to go to La Crosse with a friend, well experienced in chasing trains on a "River Run." What follows is my photos from the day.

We started early in the morning at the BNSF La Crosse Yard, and on the BNSF side of the river. It was about Eight O'clock when we pulled up to the yard to hear a BNSF freight talking to the Dispatcher about a Northbound Signal, and getting the go ahead. So, we headed a mile or so North to a nice little spot where I snapped this photo:

http://www.railimages.com/albums/noahhofrichter/aed.jpg

Then we headed back for the yard, to see what was up. Sitting on the outer-most track was this hopper, my first personal contact with a new BNSF logo. I think with the Orange in it, it doesn't look bad!!:

http://www.railimages.com/albums/noahhofrichter/aee.jpg

Moving ahead a little ways, we ran into this locomotive, an SD9-3, according to the BNSF, as a yard switcher:

http://www.railimages.com/albums/noahhofrichter/aef.jpg

Well, behind that SD9-3 was a BNSF eastbound Freight that had been waiting for the Westbound we shot before to clear the single track territory. He had to make a set out, and so we had plenty of time to get ahead of him.

We decided the head down to Genoa WI first, and then work our way back up. We stopped on the North Side of Genoa for these two shots, the first of the BNSF freight that was setting out, and the second another Eastbound:

http://www.railimages.com/albums/noahhofrichter/aeg.jpg

http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=121408

And thus begun the Parade. The BNSF elected to hold all westbound traffic South of the Yard, and they ran about 4 or 5 eastbounds in a row. By the time they were done, the BNSF had three Westbounds stacked up south of the yard waiting to get in. It worked nicely, as each Eastbound gave each westbound a roll by, so we could tell how close they were getting by which train they were talking to.

Here are the next few trains, in order of when they showed up South Of La Crosse. One westbound, but otherwise eastbounds. The one westbound was interesting because of the Run though Conrail unit:

With that the clouds started moving in, and so we set off for the Hobby Shop in La Crosse.

A short time later, we were at Dakota MN, now on the CP, awaiting the Milwaukee Road 261 steam excursion. Amazingly the sky had almost totaly cleared up, after being almost overcast earlier. Eventually 261 would come steaming around the corner and along the river, with a lot of steam coming out of the stack, and moving that fast, well, you can guess what happened shortly after this photo:

http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=121462

Now with plenty of Coal Smoke in our lungs, we headed off for Lunch. 261 was going to turn and take on water at River Junction, and head back up the river to St. Paul. we had at least a good hour before he would be going anywhere. While we were waiting, we heard 261 ask the Dispatch about the ICE train(M-KCSP) that was coming up from Marquette to St. Paul. It would have to wait behind the 261. The dispatch answered that he was to be expected at 1400, and it was about 1330 right now. So, we headed down the ICE to find him and follow him back up. We didn't get very far before we found him, as he was already about two miles South of River Junction. He was moving slow, as he couldn't do much until 261 cleared up. So, We ran ahead and I got this so-so going away shot of my First ICE train:

http://www.railimages.com/albums/noahhofrichter/adz.jpg

The ICE train had work to do at River Junction, and so we ran ahead to chase and set up for 261 at what is called Donehower siding. We were really early, and so I set up my shot and waited. Apparently the dispatcher decided to run two Eastbound Freights through first, so 261 wouldn't have to meet them anywhere. So, these two frieghts showed up while we were waiting:

http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=121410

http://www.railimages.com/albums/noahhofrichter/aec.thumb.jpg

Then the main show came again:

http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=121415

We jumped back in the car to try to get one more shot of 261. He was moving fast enough we didn't get ahead of him until the other side of Winona Mn, in a little town called Minnesota City, because he had to stop to pick up Passengers in Winona. So here was the last shot of 261:

http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=121417

We knew the ICE M-KCSP wasn't far behind, and so we moved about 5 blocks up the tracks to a different spot, and I got this parting shot of him just as the sun swung around to set:

http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=121418

That would end up being our last shot of the day. We thought we heard something trip the Detector South of Winona, and so we headed into Winona to see if we could catch the train. Either it snuck by us, or we picked up a detector off the BNSF, because nothing showed up within about a half hour.

So we headed for home. And the weird part is, when we got to the CP at Mauston, what should we see but the same train led by that CEFX unit rolling through Mauston, almost 3.5 hours later!!

Sorry that was so long, but I saw a lot of trains!! Overall it was a good day, and at least the weather co-operated. I'd say I had pretty good success considering this was my first time chasing up and down the CP and BNSF at LaCrosse. I had seen one or two trains before, but always by accident.

Noah, great shots. Don't you just love leased power. Living along the Peavine in IL is the same. On any given day it's an easter egg hunt. You can see BN, SF, BNSF, ATSF, IC, CN, CP, UP, FURX, Conrail and an odd assortment of cars on any day. If their schedule were a little consistent it would be ideal. Willy

Thanks for the compliments guys!!

BlHanel, We heard the Empire Building come through on the CP while we were watching the BNSF. He was close to on time when he arrived, but something must have been wrong, as he didn't get out of the station for an hour or so, or at least if we heard right on the scanner.

Willy, I love the Mixed Lease power we saw. I don't get to see roads like NS or CSX at all, and we actually saw one of the New CSX paint scheme ones on a run through!! It was cool!!

....This morning as I was walking I heard a DS talking about getting the "FEMA train past Marion, In. and I wondered what RR that might be as I didn't hear that part of it...and about 2 this afternoon I caught a train loaded with flat cars and they each contained a white large type vacation trailer....maybe 30' in length coming into Muncie on the NS Frankfort line....I did mention on a post a few days ago about seeing similar consist of flat cars loaded with the same product on a siding here and the next day they were gone....I expect they are on their way south to the delta region.
