Several months ago, Union Pacific ran a maintenance train on the ex-Southern Pacific, ex-Pacific Electric line to Torrance. Most of the maintenance-of-way cars (flat cars) still were lettered for lines that the UP acquired....Western Pacific, Denver & Rio Grande Western, etc.

Just today, I saw a boxcar painted for Valdosta & Southern at Dolores Yard (Carson, CA) on the UP. I don't recall if the reporting marks were changed to VR (Valdosta Railway). There were also some old MKT (Katy) gondolas but the reporting marks were updated to "UP".

Other than the usual fallen flags that I often see (see my first post in the topic), I was lucky enough to catch a Northern Alberta Railway boxcar in Melville, Saskatchewan. I think that that's the only the second time I've seen an NAR car outside of a railway museum (and the first one was years ago).

U.P. still has a lot of cars in original MoPac colors, but in recent years they have been disappearing due to repainting.

Forgot to mention earlier that I often see patched DRGW and the odd CNW power on UP here in Santa Cruz, CA, when they run up to the cement plant at Davenport.

I do a lot of train watching over in the Valley, around Redding, Chico, Red Bluff, and Marysville (Binney Jct, AWESOME place to watch trains!) and I regularly see cars with WP, CNW, GN, SOU, MP, MKT, SP,and Rock Island and every once in a while Frisco. This is UP territory, the line between Sacramento and Oroville, and on up through the Canyon is former WP, and the line between Roseville and Redding on up into Oregon is former SP. I have also noted what appears to be brand new restenciling of fallen flag logos (especially SP and WP) on cars, so I guess they are still using the names. I know the OSL (a UP subsidiary, it's the UP line between Portland and Salt Lake City) was on paper well into the 80's, even though they hadn't existed as a railroad for several decades. If you go to the BNSF web site, and look at some of the crew info, you will see too they still use NP, GN, SLSF, FW&D, CS, BN and SF to distinguish crews.
