5997, Aw! go ahead and paint on the sheetrock. A good coat of Kilz will cover it up nicely if you decide to take the train out or move. Actually I'm not all that cavalier but I did paint mine directly on the sheet rock after I coved the corners with artists matt board. I figure I can always repair it after. Heck I even moved a doorway to get more wall space. I covered a window with some static cling sky you can geet at the local home improvement store. Heres a couple examples.
Howdy All!!!
First time listener here.LOL
There are some great pics and examples of great modeling. Here are three contributions to the effort. Could not just pick one.
I have a photo essay of the layout,,, but I guess that is defunct as I am re-building with two levels, cd 55 from Atlas and hand laying cd40 for the industries.

(anybody that listens to John Boy and Billy will get it)
A first time poster and I am already impressed. Now you say you model Wisconsin so I have a question for you. Do you have Byron Hill on your layout somewhere. I always love watching the trains climb out of the valley. BTW, Like the Milwaukee units.
Happy railroading

Nothing fancy, just a couple more pics I took this weekend.

Thos eare some great photos. Better than mine! I got a stupied Auto flash on my digital and you need a certant amount of light to make to make the flash go off. Keep up the good work to all of ya.
Hmmmm,,,, Best or favorite? I guess these two would be a close tie for the Seneca Lake, Ontario, and Western RR.

We'll get there sooner or later!

Ray: Your stunning OZ modeling has finally shown up through my browser. My maternal grandfather was an engineer on the line that runs around what we were taught in school to call “The Great Australian Bight”. Never met him to really talk to.
The Sunkist building has also been permitted to show. Regretfully very little else is getting through on this dial up. I guess it’s just too many pics for the 24K baud of my link.
I’ll leave with another shot of the A&W. The tressle was on a peninsula curve. The cross bracing did eventually get put on. (It’s an old photo from film and I’ve not got time to learn photoshop.)

der5997,That backdrop looks great!! Yeah I got a little bit of vertical line, horizontal too for that matter in the coved corners. It doesn't show in photos but its there in real life. After tacking up the matboard I used sheetrock mud to feather it in, I just got in a hurry and didn't want to put another coat on.
I thought that in Canada they always put extra A's in the letter sets
Great pics Rich! Thats going to be a GREAT layout once it is finished.

Your Grandfather would have been a very tough man to have worked on that line, it is all desert without a tree (the Nullabor Desert - Null abor - no trees). It runs from Adelaide in South Australia to Perth in Western Australia, a long way.
I like your painted backscene, real depth there.
I made the mistake of having backscenes only 16" high, not a real problem until I started to take pics then all the tall scenery has a brick wall behind them, so I moved to putting real backscenes into my pics digitally.
Here are two pics, one showing my low backscenes and the other has had the sky digitally extended upwards to cover the brick wall, no real photo this time, just using what I had already painted.
The real backscene challenges you to work on your modelling and scenery so that it matches in.

The work shown in this thread just continues to blow me away!
Thanks for being so willing to share of your work....everyone!
I know it can sometimes be tough to open yourself up to show your handiwork like you have. I mean, it can open you up to mean spirited objections and so on.
Thanks for putting yourselves on the line, so to speak.

Really nice touch with the dead tree (far left of pic). The colour is spot on.
Did you model it or did it come with the landscape background.

The dead tree is a real twig that I found in the bush on the Blue Mountains west of Sydney.
There were on bushes that had been through a bushfire but hadn't died, these twigs were sticking out of the new growth and are a light weathered grey, just like real wood... with small black bits from the fire. This is exactly what dead trees out here can look like.
I grabbed an armful and I must have a dozen or so scattered around the layout.
The background behind the tree is perhaps about 3 feet away and receding to the far left corner of the room (see the first pic showing the low backscene).
Here is one I took a while back. WAG local fighting gravity on a hot summer afternoon.

Can I request that people don't keep duplicating the photos when makeing comments. It really dilutes this wonderful thread.

Some of my best pics are "mistakes". (I suppose that doesn't say much for my camera skills, huh?) I meant to say........Sometimes a "mistake" is a good thing! (Yeah, that sounds better!)
There're a few "best" pictures.

Here's my layout as of July '05.

It's only the 1st phase benchwork, which is probably going to end up being redone. Sorry for the horrible photo quality (it's a disposable camera, I took this before I got my digital one). Note the unfinished walls and pile of table legs sitting on the table to the right of the picture. I still have to put up drywall and paint the stuff. About a week after I took this picture, I built the rest of the benchwork. Sadly, I think I will have to redo it.
Here's my little setup. I hope the link works.

Hope to see your layout sometime.

The link works perfectly when I click on it. Altoona, nice plaster work on the tunnel!
der5997,
When I copy the non-working link you posted into a new browser window, it produces the same photo as in Altoona's original post. Remember to hit Enter after you insert a link to activate it. You can then backspace to continue your text after your link.
Yeah, it's quirky, I was really trying to get it to post the picture but I had to settle for the link. Keep trying. :)
