PC great news on the wife. Missed that post sorry. Not much happening here today . Good Morning Diners - just a brief stop for now, as Zoe showed me the bill for yesterday Shock [:O], and I have to (uh, well...) head for the sink in the back and deal with a load of dishes. I'll be back later after I get those caught up (and my tab taken care of)...

Oh, PC - GREAT news that your wife came through the surgery well. Sounds like some physical therapy, rest and recuperation and TLC from you are in order. Thumbs Up [tup]

Blessings,

Hello everybody ........

Fergie, I've been admiring the 4-8-4. It's fantastic. Now I'll disclose I actually did ride behind CPR steam in the mid 1950's.

RT ..... Nice light breakfast there. Anything left for the rest of the diners? Wink [;)] Keep in touch.

Hard to beleive that Thanksgiving is nearly here. This has been a fast year. It must be on one of those scale clocks.

Oh, I see there still is some oatmeal in the diner. (RT and you other chow hounds must have been on the hungry side this morning.)  I'll have some of that with OJ, please.

Cheers!

Good morning everyone, 49F here this morning after a 32F start at 6am, and headed for 60F before reality sets back in tomorrow and snow on Friday. The New England Village is now all set up, but I have to select a locomotive to run on this layout for Christmas, I was thinking of a 2-8-0, what do guys think? Or maybe a 4-6-2 ?

Ive been thinking about starting another layout. However the thought of a Hump yard is something Ive been wanting to add. Or any idea of what Im talking about?? LOLOL

Cary, it looks like there are 3 articles that have been in MR (one of them seems to be a yard tower). I recall that one of the other two I had seen and it was using air lines - pointed uphill - to slow down the cars. The timing of the length of the air blast was the thing to control. Check here for the specific issues:

http://index.mrmag.com/tm.exe?opt=S&cmdtext=hump+yard&MAG=MR

I actually got a yard tower off eBay - an older Suydam or California Models, I forgot which right now - which would work with that. But you could probably scratchbuild a pretty decent one, since the design's pretty standard for the towers. Hope that's useful for you.

and if we're to have a pie train we need a mobile toaster oven to keep them warm - how about an electric?

Cary - IIRC there was mention of using bristles from a stiff nylon brush poked up in the track to slow the cars as theycame down hill. You could easily make a mockup of one track with grades by propping one end up on a piece of wood with a 1x holding the track. You could then experiment to your hearts content.  J.R.

***Ed, the water in the tires adds weight, making the tractor more stable. Our small tractor with a narrower wheel base bedefits greatly from doing so. Smile [:)]

I don't think I mentioned this, the wife was so sick the other day she had to cancel her re-interview for Flight Nurse. She is coughing so much I am beginning to think it is time she goes to "Doc In The Box" (walk in clinic) to make sure it doesn't become a serious lung issue. Perhaps she never got over her last illness.

With wife sick, never made it to the LHS (not even remotely "local") yet, so the Kato Mike remains undressed. No biggie, it has been this way for years now.

Anyone know if there is a nice Life Flight/Rescue type helicopter in HO scale available? If so, who makes it and where is a good place to purchase one? Thought it would be a neat present for the wife (providing she gets that job). Thanks!

No we have to many playing with it trying to cut everything else they could here in the dinner heck if you don't watch it and we have one of those parties that flip and fergie are know to get a little crried away they'd start cutting the bottles open just to watch the bottle explod from the heat to see if the lazar could light the liquior and shoot the bottle like a rocket.

Evening Gang:

RT: You are a sneaky devil. That was pretty good plaining.

PC good to hear that the Mrs is home. Now don't take advantage of her condition and buy a bunch of train stuff.

The cows are fed and we visited with one of the guys from Shell who was checking the well. I also got the ears glued back on Mary Ann's two rabbits. The only RRing I got in was watching a couple of UP freights go through. Yesterday I saw a BNSF train go by. It was evedently a unit coal train. It was empty and headed west. The intire train was made up of GATX bottom dumping hoppers. That's the first unit train I've seen go through here. Could be we have some new traffic. It's going to be colder here the next few days and then back to unseasonably warm. I have to replace a few light fixtures in the shop. I'm also going to add some.

Well I guess I'll head for bed.

Good Night All

I just received a severe weather warning for my area. It seems that tonight and tomorrow a Canadian cold front will be moving through pushing wind gusts of 15 to 25 mph ahead of it. That doesn't sound like much unless you happen to be out on one of the area lakes at the time. Wind like that can really drive the chop up, making navigation hazordous as small craft can be prone to capsizing. About the only way it'll effect me is to blow tree limbs down and/or put a tree over onto the power lines. In that case I'll have to go and help remove it.

Hello everyone .....

Here's what happened. We just had our spinach salads an hour ago. Then I see the Forum thread telling about spinach being recalled for E Coli.  Well, then I pawed through the trash to retrieve the bag, and found out it was Dole brand and not on the recall list identified on the linked article in the thread.  I get back on the comouter, and I see Jeff spotted the dates were over a year ago. Thanks Jeff. What happend, Dick?

I'll eat something else tomorrow.

RT .... good news about the deal from Hobby Lobby. As I mentioned, there are train shows in the Nashville area early in December.

PC ... keep taking care of Mrs. PC.  Make sure she does not rush recovery and she follows instructions. I feel great that prayers are being answered.

I had a little fun.  I posted a thread in Trains Forum asking people thoughts about if they think BNSF should go back to the warbonnet and also the Santa Fe name.

Happy Model Railroading!

Good Evening Coffee Clubbers,

Just a quick check-in tonight as we're still in the midst of packing for the trip.  we'll be gone almost three weeks.  During that time, while I will have occasional access to the net, I don't know if I'll have a chance to post.  So if I just drop out of sight for a while, I haven't fallen off the face of the earth.

Jerry - I like the pump.  Turned out really nice.  There are so many different variations on this theme.  I don't think the lack of a drive belt is critical.  We're talking N scale here, right/

RT - great price on the train set.  Nice going with getting a good price and using the coupon.

Gotta run.  See you guys soon.

Regards

Ed

Good evening Diners:  Looks like it's my tab, so belly up to the bar! I'll have a toasted multigrain ham sandwhich with mayo please, and a JR regular. Thanks Zoe.

Nothing very much on the layout today, it was more of an outside chores day.  Did manage to get an old spray can (the first two I tried were no good) to yield a grey primer coat on three pieces of stripped corrugated cardboard I’m hoping will work for a modern steel piling-type face for that container dock.  Once it’s really dry I’ll brush paint on an acrylic red-brown, and see just how fuzzy it still is. The fuzz is from the fibres in the cardboard’s outer layer that has been stripped away, but still adheres to the corrugations.  It’s the corrugations that look like the pilings of the dock face.  So long as there aren’t too many left, I think that I should be able to dry brush them to look like seaweed.

Northern Phil:

der5997-Now this is only a suggestion, but when I was in N, I always added expansion joints with a #2 sharp pencil. It also made pretty good oil spill stains that looked like they had been cleaned or were old. I tried black ink, and it was too dark, it made the lines look about 3 scale inches wide.
…Thanks for these tips.Thumbs Up [tup] I used pencil on the Fish Oil plant wharf, and had really forgotten that. You are right, the ink would be very black, and I’m not sure just what I’d use for a pen that would be Normal scale for those joints.  I was really responding to Ryan’s great looking concrete floor of the roundhouse.

The oil spill idea is intriguing, I must try that out on some scrap pieces. Pity the garbage was put out tonight, as there are a couple of test pieces for the concrete paint mix in there!

Dick:

Most the Diner's have "chickened out" ( no pun intended to the Turkey Test ), or, their score was so bad they were embarrassed to post their results.
…site wouldn’t open for me ( aka the dog ate my homework???)Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Cary:

(by JR) - IIRC there was mention of using bristles from a stiff nylon brush poked up in the track to slow the cars as they came down hill.
…I’ve used that tip to hold ore cars on a grade at a mine site (Campbell River layout).  That was static, but it’s certainly worth a try with a moving car, and way less complex than either my suggestion or CapeJim’s.  You’ll probably have to experiment with just how many bristles, and exactly what height.  I’d keep a log of the attempts, so you can see what the good choices are.

Welcome back Dave.  Holding up pretty well, and there are more old clients dropping in all the time lately.

PC:  Glad Mrs. is home. Lots of TLC will keep you away from the layout I shouldn’t wonder. Drop in as you can with updates though. We’re praying for you both.Angel [angel]

That’s it for tonight. Goodnight all, and God Bless.  Prayers for all in need of healing, comfort and peace.Angel [angel]

JERRY: Congrats on the new granddaughter, that is one precious gift from God, enjoy every minute with her Jerry, they grow up far too fast, and we have such short time.

PC: Glad to see that the Mrs is now home, we all pray for her rapid recovery.

GARRY: I knoweth not what you speaketh of...the Spinach problem was months ago, how come you still have old spinach kicking around? LOL

JEFF: Be VERY careful of live lines that may come down on the trailer!!!!

The highest score so far is 15 correct answers out of 20, the lowest is 8 correct. The names of the lowest are not given to protect the Diner's image. This site should open just fine, but if it doesn't for some reason or other on your PC, then copy and paste the address to your browser and see how you do against 5th graders......if you have the courage!

Back again, it's like I just can't get enough of this great diner chow!

inch53- I don't know what it is, but if I have in my immediate vicinity a camera that has film, batteries, and the sun is just right, it becomes safe to actually to have a pic-nic or build houses on any tracks I might be near. Years ago, I took a day off work for a Dr's appointment, it took all of 20 minutes so I went to downtown Muncie, In, and sat for 6 hours beside the Conrail AND Norfolk Western main lines, (3 converging lines in total) and not o n e, repeat, o n e train went through. As I drove north through town on my way home at dusk, it sounded like someone had opened a train horn factory behind me. Sometimes I think it is a Twilight Zone kinda thing!

jeffreyW-Again, thats a good looking scheme, on both the hoods and the cabs. Simple, but striking. Very railroady (if thats a word), getting the most from less. I like the way the decals look too! Are they custom?

Heartland- I totally agree with you about this year being on a fastclock. Seems like just a few weeks ago we started the "year of '007" (read like Sean Connery would say it), and now it's pretty much over! Why do they go faster when you get older?

Cox47- You built that out of scrap? Thats a great looking pump! Most of what i build out of my scrap box looks like something Picasso did during his "Sangria" years! Good job!

rtarincollector-Good score on the G scale at Hobby Lobby! Careful, sounds like the beginning of MSD- Mutiple Scale Disorder-, a disease that creeps up on you and promptly dissipates your energy, depletes your finances and causes your focus to go right out the door! Especially after you see all of the really neat stuff that is coming out in G, like that SD70MA uhhhh.....see, there it is! Thats how it gets you!

Garry-That spinach deal is why I never eat anything remotely healthy! No sir, when you eat cheeseburgers and donuts, you don't have any false expectations about your food killing you! On the other hand, if you eat spinach and broccoli and it croaks you, ya gotta be mad! (and have you noticed that the last four letters in broc-coli...well, you get my drift!) Wean yourself off of that healthy stuff, pick up a Sara Lee cheesecake and bask in the safety of your selection! If you get the Strawberry Topped, well right there is your daily fruit requirements!

der-I use pencils alot in modeling, probably due to all of the doodling I did in school. You can add personalized graffiti, weathering, facial hair and wristwatches, all sorts of neat stuff! I tried to put windshield wipers on a car once with a Sharpie Fine, that didn't come out so good, though! O scale wipers on an HO Crown Vic. But if the Monsoons ever come, thats the car to drive!

Amyjo and I went to Hobby Lobby today, they are gearing up for C-mas, and they have a pretty good selection of MR supplies, sets, etc. But what caught my eye was in the crafts dept, they have pieces of colored cut glass that would make good slabs of steel. If you haven't been to a craft store-HL, Michaels etc,- you might check 'em out and see what they have. Alot of potential!

Water storage tanks, tubs, buckets...ALL are overflowing...YIPPY!

Hey, I took that turkey quiz thinking I must have done well...Only 13 of the 20 right (according to their answers). However, I dissagree with them on several answers. In fact, I KNOW some of their "correct answers" are indeed incorrect, so don't feel bad guys.  Remember folks, just because something is on the Internet, doesn't make it true. Whistling [:-^]

Hi Gang,

Sure is quiet in here tonight.

Jeffery must have scared everyone with the threat of that storm and all have gone home.

Jeff, I want you to know that that Canadian blow passed through here yesterday. It was powerful. All the way from Calgary to Winnipeg. 60 to 75 MPH winds.  Blew some vehicles off the roads. Flipped an RV. near Saskatoon, broke lots of trees, tore some roofs off.  Moved my utility trailer beside my garage about 8 feet back until it hit the gate into the back yard. Good thing or it probably would have ended up in the storm channel. So it sounds like it has pretty much blown itself out if its down to 25 mph.  So hang on to that lightining rod Jeff and you should be OK.

Did lots of work on the layout the last two days. Completed the sub-roadbed for the branchline and reverse loop.  The loop starts at a point where there are twin bridges so it took quite a bit of fiddling to get them lined up and elevated properly. But looks like it is going to be just "dandy".

I have just left plywood roadbed in for now over the gorge, sometime in the future I hope to get brave enough { skilled } to replace it with a tressel.  But more important things on the list right now.

Did a little train running , but thought I would drop in here and have a dog & suds before bed.

Eyes are having a hard time staying open and when that happens the spell check gets a work out.

Prayers and blessing to all in need, So glad to hear that some are on the mend and back home. Be sure to take good care of her, I'm sure she would do the same for you.

Sweet dreams all.
