Good Morning All

Well life goes.

John thanks for the call last week as it is always good to here from you. And guys thanks for the concern. Right now I'm in "Siege Mode" as there is little I can do or get excited about these days. Not enough sleep to keep me enthused. And I can't spend time on the MR as Dad can't get to the basement yet.

The Renovation is coming but slowly. A new plumber showed up and within 8 hours the upper sewage system was installed. Now the kicker (Always one of those) The Building Code: States any more than 3 toilets on a line requires 4" pipe. I have 3". Building inspector should be in on Monday to make a ruling. If he says 4" then a trench may have to be dug through the basement through the carpet/sub floor though the middle of the Central division of the MESS! Yes you heard it!! Haven't told Dad yet as I don't want to concern him.

Anyway that's coming Monday. Until then I have 4 Tsunami's to install (2 medium  and 2 heavy Steam) So that should keep my mind off of things, I hope.

Later Guys!

Fergie

Good morning everyone......the winds have been howling since last evening, the Montreal express is at 40-50 MPH !!! The storm that hit us on Friday, REALLY exploded when it got into the Gulf of Maine, as many of these stroms do. The Canadian Maritime provinces are getting pummeled!!! The storm grew so intense up in Canada, that the winds we are now getting down here in central NE are from the backside of this intense LOW pressure system. The wind chill here is now -11F ( -24C) !!!!

FERGIE: Did "Murphy" retire to Nova Scotia??? Man, you have had one run of tough luck. I don't know the layout of your house and plumbing system, but "if" you are told that you must increase the size of your main waste line in the house from 3" to 4", is there a way that you can run any one of the waste lines from one of the bathrooms across the basement ceiling and then drop down the basement wall? If so, you would only have to break the floor in that one location, cut in a "Y", and you should be OK.

Dick If you do what you always did, you'll get what you always got!! Learn from the mistakes of others, trust me........you can't live long enough to make all the mistakes yourself, I tried !! GMT,    Your rig is sure fancy.  Here is a picture of our T800.

Paul,  Was this the picture that you wanted to see?  I will have some changes to it because we have some figures and our first layer of water has been added to the scene.  It is just a small corner of our layout.  Nothing else is that complete, but we need it finished before we can add the rickety bridge and track that will be in front of that area.

Good afternoon Trackside Diners:  Well, the power went out a few minutes after I left here last night, so we didn’t see all of Yes Minister after all.  With the power, went the phones.  First time that’s happened to us, ever.  Seems a tree took the power line on to the phone cable and the power line burnt through the cable before power was lost, and the rain put the fire out.

A neighbour down the Passage road used his cell phone to call Aliant (the phone company) shortly after the phones went out. (SO Aliant knew about it, besides, the power company also told them when they fixed the power line.)

This morning another neighbour (elderly, widowed this year) used her cell to call in the fault.  The FIRST RESPONSE of the repair service person to her was “It’s just your phone, so it’s your responsibility, how do you intend to pay for it?  We don’t have a repair crew for the weekends, and will get on to it when we can”.

She called around other local numbers, and of course got nothing, so she knew it wasn’t just her.  She called Aliant back and was told, “Oh yes, we’ve just been told about it!”…

What is wrong with this picture?

Knowing nothing of these developments, I phoned the repair service when we went into the Harbour (power and phones didn’t go out there, it was a tree local to us).  I was told that, yes they knew about the problem, but it was phone cable, and the cable crews don’t work weekends.  The “duty manager” was trying to round up a work crew”

On our trip back from the Harbour after lunch we saw the crew at work on a section of downed cable along the passage road. (We had not noticed that on our way in)  Perhaps an hour later the phone s came back on.  Aliant, “Here for you!”

Something large and dead must have washed ashore last night, there were 3 eagles and a bunch (too few for a murder) of crows down there fussing over it….just what we couldn’t see.

…I was wondering how locos are going to escape, coming in from the left on the main, and taking a train into those stub end tracks.

Jeff:

Now, as for trains being worthless, what do you think would happen if all rail traffic within US borders stopped for a month? For one thing, your big chain stores like Wal-Mart, Target, Sam's, not to mention the big hardware supply store and home improvement centers would have to close. Why? Their stuff comes in by truck, doesn't it? The trucks are loaded at the supply points and warehouses. How are those warehouses supplied? You guessed it, the railroads. Without the railroads, commerce, industry and trade in the US would quickly come to a stop.
…the same line of thinking has occurred from time to time with me in respect of people who call other people @$$h**e.  Think how long we’d live without them?Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Good to hear that the decoder sorted out the run problems on that old Bachmann.Thumbs Up [tup]

fargo:

Colby, I know just where your coming from kids can really be rotten to each other. I grew up in the early 60's so trains were still cool almost all my freinds had a train set and a racing track also.
…I was in High school in the 50’s, and luckily one of the teachers ran a model railroad club (he scratch built steam in brass) so mrr was not at all looked down on.  In fact, that’s where I caught the mrr virus.

Paul: Thanks for the Soo locks info.  1000’, and narrow enough for the locks.  Navigating one of those in high seas would be a challenge!

Interesting work with that corrugated metal tool.  Now, would something like that be possible in N?

Dick:

The new upper limit for borderline hypertension is 135 for Systolic for non Diabetics.
...that’s a bar they keep raising (or is it lowering in this case?) My Doc is happy if I keep below 140/80.  He put me on Diovan, and a Phase 4 trial.  That means I got my own meter for free, so I test once a week.

but running out of time trying to move the mouse fast enough.....that is the price we pay for being over 50.
…what we need is one of these…

Mike: Interesting frost shots…what happens to the moles in all that wet one wonders.  We have an interesting sea ice thing happens around rocks on the shore.  Freezes at high tide, then the tide goes out, and the ice sags down the rocks in sheets.  Happens a lot.

Sue:  Do you take baggies to these seminars?  A friend of ours was a Conference and Seminar speaker, and always packed baggies to take care of the other meals of the day!

That is one sweet piece of scenery on your layout.Bow [bow]

Hoople: You’d love your Caravan if you ever had a Windstar!!!

Afternoon Gang: It's still raining here. The temp is in the high 30s or low 40s. With the dampness it feels down right cold. If it stops raining and I hope that it does for a bit this afternoon I'll have to get out and feed. If it doesn't I'll have to get out and feed and get wet and cold. Sad [:(]

Lee: I thought about doing something like that but the thought of trying to braze a bunch of little scribs and keeping them alined didn't appeal to me. That's why I thought of useing the bolt. When I use the dental pick I use the back side that is curved and smooth. The pick end would tear the foil.

Sue: That's the picture that I was asking about. It looks very nice.Smile [:)]

Der: The Poe lock handles the big boats that are 1000ft long 105ft wide and 64ft deep. There are 13 boats in this class. The largest is actually 1006ft long. They are talking about building a second lock for the big boats that would take a boat even longer. They are affraid that the Poe might become damaged and the 1000 footers would be out of business. As for being hard to handle in a sea they are so big that it maybe easyer then a smaller boat. Also since the Fitzgearld sank captains are being more cautious and staying in port during really bad weather.Dead [xx(]

I'm going to join Mary Ann on the bed and practice some more being retired. Just 11 days to go.Wink [;)]

Evening all!

Man, I've been on the run all day!

Took my daughter to get glasses (to the tune of $250!!!) and shopping, then came home to grab my stuff for teaching tonight, then off to class.  Got back to the house and made some homemade enchiladas and now it's time to CHILL OUT!  Wow, what a day!

And Jeff, since you're buying....I'll have the same!

Good evening folks:  While taking photos of the surf this morning, I happen to have got a shot of one of the eagles that was interested in whatever it was died just over the crest of that shingle beach. …I’ll be doing my surf looking from the seaward side, so I’m not sure just how much use the photos Ihave will be, but they give me something to go by.

Good Evening All,

A nice glass of red would do me a treat just now thanks.

Fergie - Please may you draw a "mensch" when you get inspected and not a by the book public employee.

Sue - The truck is gorgeous, but the "little corner" of the layout is OMG Bow [bow]Thumbs Up [tup]. The rock work is super! If you get the rest of the layout to the same standard you rate a magazine article for sure.  I always envy you guys with the big trucks as you pass me struggling up hill at 40.

Jerry - so you keep cutting it and it's still too short? That's why they make shims and glue my friend.

Dick - how are you doing with the weather now? Hope we don't all get closed in next weekend. we're heading out to the big E Saturday morning with the rest of the crew setting up Friday. I have two clients coming out from Pittsburgh and Cinncinatti Frioday and my friend who's driving up is on duty that day as well so it'll be the Dawn Patrol 02early Sat.

Hoople - 4 days is way too long to wait don't you think? Good luck at any rate and watch for snipers. (Not me though I already have my MRC up and running.)

Jeff - thanks for the inspiration - I have a whole backlog of older loco's I want to put decoders in but I'm still laying track and haven't gotten to it yet. Don't think a Tyco with decoder is worth it though, no? Now that you have the new backdrop in are you going to do a flat to cover the A/C unit? A nice screened power plant heat exchanger would fix you right up.That surf and turf loks good - since it's on you.... I'll have the same TYVM.

Der -  Don't you just love the convenience of modern privatized communications. Would they be as mellow and laid back if you took the same time paying your bill? "It's only cable and I don't pay bills on the weekend or odd or even calander days."  Hope you have your house nailed down well. that wind looks wicked. How do you plan to do the spray that is three feet off the wave crestWink [;)]

Spent the morning welding and painting the gearcase for the SW-8 at the museum. Took it over, but didn't try to fit it as the wind was howling and i get frozen all to easily these days. Did make and fit winterization panels for the RS-1 and secured a couple of blanking panels i made for the RS-11 (1402). Except for a couple of photographers and our tour guides everyone else was smart enough to stay indoors. At least got some layout time in at home working on the gravel pit and tracks. If I get ambitious I'll try the new bridge I want to make to replace my foam viaduct.   All for nowBig Smile [:D],J.R.

Yeah four days is a while...
While I'm waiting, I'm going to have my bud Charlie come over so we can inspect his new Athearn GP38-2. It looks pretty nice.
I just hope I can win that auction. Then I'll need to wash a few cars, work at gramma's for a bit, and then I'll invaid the LHS for a Tsunami, Digitrax DHWHP NMRA plug to 9 pin plug, A nice Large oval speaker, and the enclosure for it and I'll be bound for the Layout.

At one time, I modeled in N scale, about 1984-87. I had several locomotives, including two EMD SD's. One was an EMD SD40-2, the other, I really didn't know what it was. It's been sitting on top of my TV for all these years, unidentified. Yesterday, I decided it was time I found out. I entered the roadname and number into my search bar. I really didn't expect to get anything definative on it, we all know how a lot of models are. They'll have a number that belonged on a completely different type. I was going through the links that popped up and one left no doubt whatsoever as to what type my model is. There was a pic of the locomotive, complete with number. It's an SD7.

Good morning everyone, sunny and cold here this mroning, only 13.8F at 10am with a wind chill of 3F. Last night the winds howled at over 35mph at 10F giving us a wind chill of below -30F. It was so cold that the mice in the wood shed had ear muffs on.

Today we have two big games to watch, in the first one Mike and Ryan and Cape Jim, RT & PC will all be biting their nails. In the 2nd game, it will my turn to bite nails along with J.R. and Lisa.

J.R. :  I am very concerned about this coming weekend. We are now in a normal east coast Winter weather pattern...COLD in January!! And the pattern will hold for at least two more weeks. We also have a good potential for a coastal storm on Thursday in Friday....ya right, just as you and many of the guys have to bring your layouts and equipment to West Springfield to the BIG E!!!!! This "could" be the first big storm of the season for us.

DER JOHN: The ocean looks calm up in the harbor, you may have some great ocean pictures to take by next weekend if we get a Nor'easter, keep the batteries charged!

MIKE: Very good photos Mike, if you keep this up, you might get a Pulitzer prize in 2007, then we could have a great celebration in the Diner!!

Time to feed the woodburner, don't want to use any more oil than necessary.

Dick If you do what you always did, you'll get what you always got!! Learn from the mistakes of others, trust me........you can't live long enough to make all the mistakes yourself, I tried !! Good morning to one and all.  That French Toast http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h80/jeffrey-wimberly/french-toast.jpg looks mighty fine this morning, thanks Jeff, and a JR Regular too please Zoë.

Happy to report the high tide mark worked out well, just grungy enough to be there.  When it came to it, I didn’t have enough height on the rocks etc. to get a decent differentiation of high water marks between the two scenes. Oh well. Should be able at last to get some foam and spray actually on the layout this afternoon. (Unless Kris has undisclosed plans )

JR:

How do you plan to do the spray that is three feet off the wave crest " style='width:11.25pt;height:11.25pt'> Wink <img src=" border="0" width="15" height="15" />
…that I must confess, may have me stumped.  I’m more or less sure that I can do spray up in the air, as here, but that fine?.....let’s just say the wind isn’t blowing quite that hard!

Jeff:  Didn’t have a proper filter for the camera, so this will have to do Like the clouds, looking good.

Dick:

It was so cold that the mice in the wood shed had ear muffs on.
…yes, but have you noticed they leave them behind stuffed between the logs when they go on summer vacation?

Smells like lunch is cooking nicely, so I’d better get ready.

Enjoy your games people…

Afternoon,  a barley pop please girls,

Well Mother made it home ok, said the roads were better the farther south she got. You'd think with Springfield being the state capital, they would atleast clear the main roads, NOT. We had more snow [4"] down here than them [3"].

JEFF, liked the clouds, they look better than some of mine. Thanks for the pic to.

DICK, don't think there's much chance of even 50 cents let alone some prize for my photos. But, there might be some-one that likes them.

Bout time for the game, I'll be in the corner with the big screen. I see the girls have the shrimp, chips and all the other goodies out already. See ya'll laters after the Bears win
